Who Thought THAT Was a Good Idea? Episode 4

This week in dumb celebrity and entertainment news: Angelina Jolie gets CGI'd in Beowulf, some desperate TV exec gets the bright idea to remake the '80s series Knight Rider, and Dog the Bounty Hunter's racist tirade isn't the first dumb move he's made (that would be having twelve children, and then pissing one off enough that he rats you out to the media).

Plus, Pierce Brosnan and the paparrazi, what Silk Stalkings and Different Strokes have in common, and an update on how minorities are faring behind and in front of the TV camera (bottom line: white people still run everything).

After you watch our rants, leave your suggestions for other classic (or not-so-classic) '80s TV shows should never be re-made. Yeah, I'm talking about you, Mr. Belvedere.

    Alf

They really should not remake Alf. Admittedly, I'd have said Battlestar Galactica should be the last show to remake so what do I know? I suspect The Love Boat should stay where it is, but I bet Fantasy Island could be awesomely twisted. I do think I'd pay money to see Battle of the Network Stars again. hee!

Son of Knight Rider. Nope, not gonna watch that.

I'm impressed that you two even managed to watch Polar Express. The trailer creeped me out so much I still haven't managed to watch it. CG Angelina? bleh! Dumb idea.

You two are always fun to watch, thanks.

    APTN

just wondering if the minority study was strictly American? i know that we have APTN the channel here in Canada (aboriginal people's television network) which i find is a great representation of the cultures art, music, heritage .. and my personal favourite Moccasin Flatts .. its created by aboriginal people, all the cast are native ... AND there are native Canadian lesbians.. i mean it doesnt get much better than that.. it may only be one show.. but i think they do a damn good job representing... im just wondering if the study was based strictly on primetime tv shows or only considered American programming?
    rotezora's picture

it would have been strictly U.S, yeah...

...but wow, Moccasin Flatts sounds AWESOME!  I wish I could watch it.

A not-so-classic 80's show that should never be re-made....Small Wonder...the show with the family and the robot girl Vicki. It wasn't good then, and would be even worse now.

We'll be seeing a lot more reality crap...

I thought AG was originally put on the air because of the WGA strike of '88. Since the 'story producers' on reality shows aren't part of the union, we'll get more of that in the 2k8 season if the strike goes long (and for the latter half of this season, if the teamsters' refusal to cross the picket lines shuts down production on the shows that are already written).

    Dog Gone

    Love the rants!!!

With regard to the Dog the Bounty Hunter issue the one thing I was really happy with was that A&E acted pretty darn rapidly and pulled the show.  I know that at first they suspended the show but within a matter of something like 3 days they pulled the show completely.  We didn't need to have Al Sharpton protests to prove it was the correct action to pull the show.....we didn't have to sputter through several weeks of people arguing back and forth.  It seemed like A&E took a couple of days for the execs to get the research done behind the scenes and the necessary meetings done and down went the hammer.  Kudos for A&E!!

As for old shows that should not be remade I think we put "The Facts of Life" in the pile of shows that should die forever.

As for the CGI of Angelina I have to say that I will likely watch the movie.  I am a complete nerd at heart and I am truly interested in the advancement of how CGI as a medium has progressed.  I also like the old story of Beowulf.  I would agree though that if you are going to pay monster bucks for a big star like Angelina then I would rather see the real thing especially naked.  But hell I've spent $15 bucks on worse things so fake naked Angie will likely get my money.

    The article on Dog's tirade

The article on Dog's tirade linked above includes a quote in which his lawyer states that Dog's not racist because 1) he's friendly with at least one black person and 2) he only used the n-word in an "endearing" or "street" way on account of his southern upbringing.

My question is this: in what way is using the mother of all derogatory, racist words--the word above all others that represents the centuries of oppression and violence against African Americans-- "endearing?"

    Perfect Strangers...

I think can Rest In Peace, undisturbed in the celluloid vault of TV history. I loved it when it was on. But I was also 7, and thought Balki was the funniest thing. I like to think I've improved with age.

The other show that shouldn't be brought back EVER is Golden Girls. For no other reason than it's a classic and should never be touched, but left alone in its glory.

and yes. definitely too many heterosexual white folks. An exceedingly poor representation of this country and its actual "minority" makeup. Although if all of the "minorities" joined forces, we would be the "majority." The possibilities and implications of this are almost too wonderful to think about.

    I am really looking foward

I am really looking foward to Beowulf, partly as a huge Angie fan, and partly as a really like that kind of movie.  However the more I see the trailer the more I hate the animation.  Not so much Angie, but just in general.  It looks like it was filmed regularly, then twiddled with to look animated - which I guess means its actually really high tech animation, but it looks terrible!  If you're going to use animation that looks as real as possible without looking real at all, then just film it don't animate!!  The animation is awesome, I appreciate that, I just don't understand the point in it.

I don't know if my rant is making sense, but grrr! Like you said, just use the real deal!!!

Sarah, thanks for bringing back memories about Silk Stalkings.I used to stay up late on a school night just to watch it, but aside from the fact that a remake wouldn't work nowadays, I wouldn't watch it without Rob Estes and Mitzi Kapture (I so had a crush on her) ....having said that my hand is deff down.

and I also have to say: yay, for latinos!! but I do think that minorities, are not that much of minorities anymore, they are growing and network tv needs to understand that they are a whole different audience that needs to be targeted.

I mentioned that I would go see Wanted just 'cause Angelina is in it but Beowulf is a no-no for me, I don't think I'll be spending money on that...

    CGI

I have to say, I don't feel that Beowulf can be fairly compared to The Polar Express. I understand where you were going with it, but they're geared towards two different types of audiences. I very much agree that The Polar Express was a boring movie and I'm not sure how it did at the box office, but look at the success of all these other CGI kids movies like Ants, Toy Story, Ice Age, etc. I'm really looking forward to a more adult-oriented story like Beowulf coming to the screen.

As for the 'why' create a CGI movie, for me it's just such an innovative medium and Beowulf looks absolutely flawless. I truly believe that many viewers watching the trailer in movie theatres did not immediately realize it was CGI.

My 'Who Thought That Was A Good Idea' as far as CGI is concerned is the remaking of the original Star Wars episodes to include (unnecessary) CGI. It was also poorly implemented which make it look plain out of place.

But anyway, as far as TV shows that should never be revisited. Perfect Strangers and Alf are really good examples. My additions would be: Full House (Seriously, how did anyone find that show watchable?), Punky Brewster (Though I loved it as a kid), Harry and the Hendersons, and Saved By the Bell.

    Monday...

...is a horrible day, but this vlog makes it so much better!

I've seen the trailer for Beowulf and I have to say it creeped me out a bit. I don't know what it is, but the people just lose that human quality. I guess there's a reason they did that, but I still think it's weird, and even a little distracting. With Polar Express I kept struggling with feelings that it was too real to be animation but too fake to be real people. My brain couldn't decide :P

Not living in the States, I'd never heard of this Dog the Bounty Hunter guy. But it looks like he's not the smartest person on Earth. I don't understand how someone can be so unaware of the fact that other people are gonna be interested in what they have to say. IMO, there's no excuse for saying something like that even if you're just some random guy, but if other people might listen, that makes it SO much worse. And I'm not even counting the kids. 12, you say? Huh.

Ok, that's it =) Thanks for this vlog, you brighten up my Mondays :D

    Son of Knight Rider

I'm on the fence about Knight Rider. That show is difficult to bring back, but it could work. Maybe. If they stick to the premise of guy wondering around helping people (love that type of show), and not saving the WHOLE world constantly it may have a shot.

    cgi

not to get all technical and nerdy on you ... but in reference to the cgi in beowulf when sarah said that cgi was when you "put on dot thingies and stickers" that actually is motion capture (or mo-cap) not cgi. cgi is what you do the the data to render it into 3d animation using software like maya, motionbuilder, etc. because cgi is just a computer graphical interface. also from the trailers that i've seen it appears that they filmed the movie and then used aftereffects or some other cgi software in editing. i found it more similar to "a scanner darkly" than "polar express"
    cindy6's picture

    CGI

I'm a CG Artist/Computer Animator, and in reference to the Episode 4 of Who thought THAT.... one reason for making films like The Polar Express, or Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and now Beowulf...is simply to push the boundaries of what the CGI technology allows and create something that has never been done. That in itself is so cool and rewarding. I know a lot of people got wigged out by Polar Express but I thought it was fascinating because I know the process behind it. I think it is fantastic to get away from the cartooney Toy Story style and make something for adults not just kids.

I'm sorry I have to correct a comment about CGI and mocap. CGI is Computer-generated Imagery, and yes 3D software like Maya is used to create animation, special effects, and models generally for films, TV and games. Mocap is just a technique to record movement it saves time for the animator who usually has to keyframe every motion. It is a part of the CGI process.

Thart's sad they have to remake Knight Rider b/c they've run out of show ideas or maybe some producer in their 30s can't let go of all the cool shows from the late 70s and 80s.

Are they really gonna make American Gladitors? Mmmm.  U know there were reruns on cable this past year of AG.  Hehehe I only watch it b/c of the hot womyn on there.

I use to watch Dog the Bounty Hunter.  I'm in shock he would use the n word. I admired the guy for turning his life around and become a fatherly figure for a lot of the juvie criminals. I guess he's not so fatherly after all.  I wonder what the parents gonna say to their kids why Dog  will not be barking.

Yeah lack of minorities on tv,yeah ok.  I don't believe there are no Native Americans on tv. We're too busy lumping them with black, white, latino, asian categories if they're mixed.  It sucks. People need to protest for a resolution if lack diversity is a problem

    CG

Hey, I loved your blog , however I feel I must say, I am overly excited about Beowulf.  Currently, I'm studying special effects and Computer Animation in college, so I'm a little biased but the time and work put into projects like these... it's an art form.  (It's like sculpting clay and animating it only on a computer.)  And although Hollywood has employed the use of CG to an excessive amount, I have to say this is the perfect movie for it. The subject matter calls for the use of so many special effects why not make the whole thing animated.  I, for one, am happy about the decision.  I'm soo sick of seeing this advanced technology wasted on nothing but disney movies, (Disney's evil).  Besides, don't the big hollywood wigs pay large sums of money just to use an actor's voice in a damn Disney movie. (I'm sorry I have too many issues with Disney)

*Of course this is all assuming the whole movie was done in CG and not actually filmed and rendered with an animated effect like I'm hearing so many people say.

Idk just my rant for the day.  I just felt oddly motivated to say something.  Still liked the show.

That woman just creeps me out.  Bad enough with the blood vials around her neck; now she is the newest member of the Council on Foreign Relations (a secret society) and have you seen the trailer for "Wanted"?  She plays an assasin in that film; it opens next year and is super violent.

Obviously Ms. Jolie is not interested in doing any cute or cuddly romantic comedy roles, even though she is supposedly settled down with Brad Pitt and kids.

It might be interesting to remake "Magnum, P.I."... but this time, let Magnum be a female P.I.

Bad news for Cashmere Mafia :/

You guys mentioned that it'll be on Nov. 27th, and now it's been pushed back til...well they don't know. Too bad.

    ABC Puts 'Mafia' in Stir

Drama premiere pushed back; 'Big Shots' displaced

With the TV season now on uncertain ground, ABC is putting one of its new shows on indefinite hold.

"Cashmere Mafia," which was set to premiere Tuesday, Nov. 27, has been pushed into the uncertain timeslot called "TBA." ABC is also giving the ratings-challenged "Big Shots" a second night off during sweeps, replacing it with "Women's Murder Club."

The bumping of "Cashmere Mafia" comes on the first day of a Hollywood writers' strike that will severely slow or altogether stop production on most scripted series. The show, about the friendship between four powerful women, has shot seven of its initial 13 episodes.

ABC didn't cite a reason for the schedule change, but postponing the show could give the network one more asset to use in the event of a prolonged strike. Rather than running through all seven finished episodes by January or February -- which is about when most of the networks' fall shows will reach the end of their strings as well -- the network could save them for the spring, when the pool of non-reality programming could get awfully shallow.

The season finale of "Dancing with the Stars" will expand to two hours on Nov. 27 to fill the "Cashmere Mafia" spot. The network hasn't figured out what to plug into the show's timeslot -- 9 p.m. Tuesdays -- after that.

"Women's Murder Club," meanwhile, will fill the post-"Grey's Anatomy" slot on Thursday, Nov. 15 (it will also air in its regular slot Friday, Nov. 16). That means a two-week break for "Big Shots," which is also getting Thanksgiving off in favor of the season premiere of "October Road."

ABC is also pre-empting the Nov. 20 episode of "Boston Legal" for a "Bachelor" special; the drama will return on Dec. 4.

Are you trying some subliminal elements, now? You keep rearranging the decor and wardrobe. Is this some sort of conspiracy? Tell me, PLEASE!

But seriously, that was a great list, especially the one about CGI'ing Angelina Jolie. Not a great idea (Grendel has a MOM, now? What, they decided to rip that from the Xena mythos, which was, in itself a rip? *sigh* Torn.) but at the same time I would like to see live-action versions of Dawnstar, Bova, Skein, Spider-Woman III (okay, not THAT badly) Wolfsbane, Shrinking Violet, Plastic Man etc...

Shows like Son of Knight Rider (!!!) remind me why I don't watch that much TV. Christ on crutches, why don't they re-make The Waltons while they're at it, too? Now that there's a writer's strike, TV's about to suck worse, like it can't already...

You've got the Race, Gender, Sexual Orientation critiques down

But this site, especially y'all's video blog, is soooo lacking in class/socioeconomic analysis. Which I guess isn't surprising, considering your apparently marvelous amounts of privilege. "Psh, we met Pierce when we were vacationing in Kauai...we only fly first class..." haha (if I sound bitter, I apologize. But I am.) I won't deny that I'm jealous, and maybe it's just the green-eyed monster in me writing this post right now. But really though...when do we ever hear about class on this site? Once maybe, in reference to Palex is all I can recall. Critiques of the wealthy and powerful stereotype of lesbians? Any out-cry for better portrayals of working-class individuals (particularly women) on tv? 'Cause we're almost as invisible as Native Americans at this point. I know hiring a working-class writer is a little problematic. But you do pretty well at empathizing with other social groups in other cases, and I don't see it being terribly problematic to expect a little more analysis in the realm of issues of socioeconomic hardship even from people who might not be living it right now. I admit, I have no idea what sort of background you come from, but that doesn't detract from my point...

    Sarah and Lori are talking

Sarah and Lori are talking about minority groups, of which socioeconomic status is not relevant (unless you're talking Condaleeza Rice, or from my history studies many years ago that American minority groups represent a larger proportion of lower class and poverty stricken families than white Americans).

I do however see an interesting point about the lack of working class based non-reality television.. perhaps this may be because people generally like to view television to escape their reality, and also provides a means to day dream to? I know I would rather fantasise about living in the Fresh Prince of Bel Air's mansion than in a place not disimiliar to where I live now.
