Who Thought THAT Was a Good Idea? Episode 1

In the great tradition of Maude and CSI: Miami (hopefully not of Joey and Private Practice), Lori and I are doing a video blog spin-off of She Made Me Watch This called Who Thought That Was a Good Idea?

Why? I blame Michelle Rodriguez. And Fox. And the writers on Women's Murder Club and Degrassi.

And even Katherine Heigl, God love her.

They've finally pushed us over the edge and driven us to dedicate a whole vlog to the week's most ridiculous, unbelievable, annoying, or just plain stupid moves made by celebrities, TV writers, movie directors, studio execs, actors, and other entertainment folks. In our opinion, anyway.

In our first episode of the new vlog, we count down the week's 5 dumbest news items — next week it might be a few more, or a few less. Depends on how dumb the week is.

See if you can guess where Degrassi's latest episode fell on the list this week...

    Excellent idea for a v-log!

Excellent idea for a v-log! Will write more after I've seen the whole thing....

Okey, seen all of it now... *grins* I never bothered to get into the whole degrassi thing, and after this I don't think I will... I was wondereing if I should start watching that murder club thing, but I'm still on the fence on that one. Not that that has anything to do with this, but I've just heard a lot of mixed reviews about, some think it's utter crap and others loved Angie it..  And don't even get me started on Buffy... I'm so glad I own all the Dvd boxes and can watch it anytime I want...

Loving the rants, and this was big fun!

    love the new segment.

Wow, i love the opening theme, its kinda fancy!

i cant believe Katherine has done that, she could have done anything. i never got into Degrassi and i'm glad i didn't now, Cheers for that, i wont bother downloading it now :)

Love your ranting can't wait for the next!

I'm the first to comment on the new vlog

Way to Go Lori and Sarah on your new vlog. I like the spin off b/c I enjoyed hearing the new detailed reasons of your rants and raves about women in entertianment news. Thanks for the scoop from the pilot to first episode in the Women's Murder Club. I'm glad I didn't want a pursue a career in hollywood as a scriptwriter. I would've been pissed to give up true art of creating good characters and a good script for ratings and biaism and stereotypes. I'm glad I took a different writing path. U know that's Hollywod for you. Maybe they show be like some shows and fire some writers and producers and bring in new ones to revive a dead end show. When're a young and depressed actress in hollywood that's what you do no matter how beautiful you are. Last week was a horrible disappointment for women in sports/entertainment news. First Marion Jones admits of using steriods during 2000 olympics now Michelle Roderiquez is going to jail. Are there any nice drug and alcholic free female celeberities anymore?

    Brilliant

Okay first off no one rants like a lesbian, I know this statement supports the stereotypical comment about the angry lesbian but lets face it, it's true. lol When a lesbian gets ticked off and rants it's funny. The ability to rant is I believe a predisposed gene that us lesbians are fortunate enough to be born with :)

That being said Sarah and Lori? This video blog ruled. I love it.

Katherine Heigl sponsoring a line of scrubs? For real? Next thing you know Emily Deschanel will be launching her own plastic skeleton brand for all future science class o_O

Sorry but I have absolutely no sympathy for celebrities that screw up and keep screwing up their lives.

This started off my week perfectly ;)

    New vlog...

    Is great!

I guessed that "Degrassi" would be number 1.  Do I get a cookie?

Loved your rants, especially about Michelle Rodriguez.  I think she's hot and all, but come on, don't drink for 90 days when you have an alcohol monitoring device attached to your ankle.  It's called common sense.

    Ooooh, fancy graphics!

Love this rant blog/vlog (rlog?)!  You are getting pretty fancy with the graphics and editing. I can't wait for the next one. Your rants are on fire!

    Women's Murder Club

I was disappointed with this too, having read james patterson's books i expected a lot but it failed to deliver, i never saw the pilot that u's did but in the book these female characters are far stronger than they have been made out in this first episode, i only hope it will get better.

great vlog though, you cant beat a bit of ranting and raving!

    more feminist blogging!

I loved the ranting, especially the "Women's Murder Club" rant.  I haven't seen the show, but I was furious with the changes you described.  More use of "patriarchal" and more irate feminism, I say!

    That WAS a good idea

I didn't even know most of this news before I pressed play let alone be mad about it...but I sure am now. Katherine Heigl - scrubs? seriously? That makes sleeping with George seem like good thinking.

    Rant Love!

Nice that you made a blog just for ranting.

Palex- Oh. My. God. You hit the nail on the head, they could have gotten Alex off the show so easily by getting accepted to a university out of town.

WMC- I was sad I couldn't fit it into my Friday schedule. Now, not so much.

    Degrassi Cheated Palex Fans

I 100% percent agree with you two on the recent episode of Degrassi. The writers clearly checked out and acted like seasons four through six didn't matter. While Palex fans do understand the circumstances that Deanna was leaving the show, it was a poor way to send her character off and end the relationship. The show used most of season six to build them back to a strong couple and to have it end so sudden, after two weeks, was shocking! It was like all what happened in season six was completely ignored. This show has blown many relationships [straight ones] over the their time period, but they were always granted genuine moments too. If I can recall a straight couple last year by the names of Sean and Emma had their up and down moments but still had their sweet moments too. That was until Sean wanted to go to the army and they ended their relationship. But it was on a good note! Palex fans never got anything close to it on the show. And I'm glad you also pointed out both characters had their faults in this episode though both was completely OOC. It was like watching two different characters going back into time. Alex seasons three through five. Paige seasons one through two. I thought I had faith in Degrassi that they would pull off the pairing with class. But I guess even for Degrassi, they can't end a realistic lesbian couple with dignity.  Thanks for the vblog it was excellent!

    Women's Murder Club rant?

Women's Murder Club rant? Best ever :) (although the Lipstick Jungle rant a few weeks ago was awesome too).
I haven't seen it (and I'm not going to either) but I can't believe that in the 21st century, people still feel this way about women. It's crazy.

Women's Murder Club - living in a bubble?

Have the writers not seen shows such as, oh I don't know, Law and Order and CSI? Both of these shows and their respective spin-offs have successfully - for the most part - given us female characters who are strong, intelligent, and more than competent at their jobs without making us suffer through the Ally McBeal crap (I liked Sarah's categorization of this type of "dumbing down"). Granted, we do get brief glimpses into the personal lives of many of the characters on these shows (i.e. Grissom and Sarah, Catherine's relationship with her daughter and in earlier seasons, her ex-husband, and Jamie on L&O and her divorce), but they do not supplant the characters' primary focus in the workplace.

I watched WMC and was quite disappointed, and after learning of the original focus of the show, I am even more frustrated.

On another note - what the hell Degrassi writers?!!!??!!!

    jennifer from pittsburgh's picture

    WMC

Friday night Caty and I caught the last twenty minutes of Women's Murder Club. We were both nonplussed. But what I really want to know is why it's *Women's* Murder Club and not just Murder Club? I mean, Fight Club is just Fight Club, not Men's Fight Club. And too bad they abandoned the actual murder club secret meetings...what happens at murder club stays at murder club ;)
    boundtostone's picture

    REALLY? I mean, really?

Was that really the Palex sendoff? Send Deanna on her way after that?? Honestly, what the HELL were the Degrassi writers thinking!! I was just as outraged with how they handled this as you two were, and I am/was invested in those two characters and how they had worked things out (albeit very vaguely since the show is only 30 minutes long). Honestly, it disprespected their relationship. Thanks for recognizing the issue.

    Grr. Arg.

Also, now I wish I had seen the first cut of the premiere of Women's Murder Club. Sounds so much better than what we saw last week!

    Still Steaming

I agree with you both about Degrassi. I sat a my computer for hours and talked to myself about how pissed off I was about that episode. They should have never brought them back together last season if this was how they were going to end them. That had to be the worst episode ever, I am very disappointed in the writers. Although I don't think that was Deanna's last episode. So...?

I think I should start recording my rants to share with everyone. I think people would find them very entertaining.

    cbrammer's picture

    I am SO glad

that I never got invested in the Degrassi "Palex" pairing. I would have been extremley disappointed with a break-up like that. I feel bad for the fans. If something like that ever happened to "Spashley" on South of Nowhere, I would go ballistic.

A fantastic idea for a vlog!

A fantastic idea for a vlog! There can never be enough snark in the world.
As for the concents, I was slightly disappointed after seeing the pilot of Women's Murder Club, but now I'm absolutely furious! It's unbelievable that on (American) TV a woman can't be successful without having the obligatory man lurking behind her back. I can't believe they completely revamped the pilot. If you'll excuse me, I need to go and fume...

    ARGH!

I feel like yelling at TPTB in Hollywood-NETWORK style 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!

Listening to your rants, I found myself even more mad than before watching your vlog.  I just can't believe how different Women's Murder Club sounds from the great way it sounded when you watched the original pilot.

As for Degrassi, I'm mad that I invested so much time into watching this show because of Palex and then getting this bulls**t resolution.

We are in 2007 right?  When will writers as well as TPTB at networks stop listening solely to the all mighty dollar and the Nielsen families and start paying more attention to those of us who have been ranting over the years about the garbage that they put on the air, etc.

I think I'm still mad about all the good shows (the ones I truly loved), but were cancelled without being given a real shot to succeed or the constant moving of time slots for decent shows, so that no one could find the show, and then it too was gone (see Arrested Development, the first season of Popular, Veronica Mars, Wonderfalls, etc.).

I only know that I am thankful for the few good shows out there and also for CABLE TV.  It is Cable TV that has the majority of shows were women are allowed to be strong... shows like The Closer and Damages.

I'm looking forward to Cashmere Mafia, but with the retooling of Women's Murder Club, I'm kind of afraid what that show might turn into.

    lawnsprite's picture

    Why? What were they thinking?

I would like to rant about why Cashmere Mafia is a mid-season replacement airing on Tuesdays?  Sarah, Lori, can you yell at the networks for their stupidity?  Wait, the yelling would never end and the behavior would be classified as irrational ;)

But as a woman, I would ask: Is it crazy to act crazy in a crazy situation?  Hell, yes; let the yelling begin and never end.

Re Buffy musical cancellations: And I never got to go to one!?! Damnit! Effing Fox. I bet Joss is fine with it.

Loving the comic shelf in the background. Buffy #7 prominently displayed: Awesome.

I miss the glory days of Degrassi when Paige was having an affair with one of her teachers. Good times.

The more Sarah and Lori vlogs the better!

First: loved the new segment, this is a spin-off that is deff worth watching :)

    Second: Scrubs?...Seriously??

Third: what's wrong with Michelle Rodriguez, can she really be that dumb?? I love celebrity gossip but this is getting a little over the top.

Last but not least: I'm glad I never downloaded Degrassi, I hate it when writers destroy lesbian relationships that way (remember The OC?)

Fashionable scrubs? I may not yet be working in the medical community but isn't the purpose of scrubs is that it's cheap clothes because blood and other bodily fluids gets on it? I mean they are going to get ruined eventually. When I go to the hospital I want a health care provider who is competent not fashionable. I agree...bad idea.

    Excellent Blog

I have to say I really enjoyed the vlog.  I don't know if I'm taking it too seriously, but I did like that it was a slight shift in attitude from the other vlogs (which are great too :)).  Although it had a couple comedic moments, something about you two really caught my attention about the topics you brought up.  It was really insightful, articulate and a great change of pace in my opinion.  Thanks Sarah and Lori.

    Worst. Breakup. Ever.

I'm glad that the Palex train wreck was mentioned on this. I've been a Palex fan for awhile and I honestly thought it would be one of the few couples that would end up alright. I was expecting the break up, but the way it was done was insane. Why couldn't they just send her off to college? The only bright side is that Paige is probably going to crash and burn in this new job. It still hasn't been confirmed that this is Deanna's last episode, but after that horrible writing I certainly hope she's not returning, they'll just mess up her character even more.

    STUPID DEGRASSI!

I am sooo happy im not the only one completely pissed off with how they ended paige and alex relationship...ARE THE WRITERS OF DEGRASSI SERIOUS RITE NOW?
after they wrote that episode they told themselves yay great episode?
wen i saw the ending i thought there was more to come i actually sat there for like 2 mins and then i was like "o wait its done!" because i refused to believe that they wud end their relationship like that ...they jus seemed sooo OOC i think the writers were definitely smokin watever jay and alex were smokin...its like u write the characters in the first place it wud technically make u an expert on how they shud act and they both did 180s from last season....how cud two ppl change soo much in 2 weeks this show is sooo dumb like WOW! i get they wanted to get deanna of the show but they had to make both characters come across like huge A**H**** in the end??...they didnt even kiss hahaha this is absolutely ridiculous portrayal of any relationship str8 or gay..i was actually confused about wat they were i had to remind myself that they were gfs and not jus friends...i think the writers needed to watch or at least remind themselves on wat they wrote last season because they seemed to have forgotten everything they wrote and decided to make up two totally new characters totally different from last season....
anyways its jus a tv show sooo watever jus totally pissed
one more thing paige puttin on the sunglasses i didnt kno if to take this seriously or not cause she looked like a complete idiot doing it...i hope lauren improvised and thought that up herself because i cant imagine the writers sittin down and saying "yeh lets have her end this by puttin on the glasses it wud jus add soo much to the scene"...i cudnt understand wat was the point of it to hide her tears or she jus thought hey let me try on my new shades while i kick alex out lol great ending scene really GREAT! just added to the total crap which was the episode sry for the long rant..

    WMC

Sarah & Lori, thanks for your take on the revamp of WMC. Damn, that bites. You mentioned this briefly, but one thing that really worried me (besides Laura Harris having sex in her office with her boss... gag) was the hint of the old Wise Negro trope. It didn't make me wretch, but it was touch-and-go.

    Great new vlog!

    lustt's picture

I said it once, and i'll say it again..

the dissolution of Palex was disappointing. That was a poor excuse for a send-off. The whole thing just didn't make any sense. The last season ended with them looking as if everything was going to be ok. How is this an appropriate way to end things? I didn't even see it coming! And when it happened, I was like "okayy? That's odd'. It seemed like the characters took two steps back in their personality. Paige was acting like a bitch, not cutting Alext any slack like usual but i thought they resolved that at the end of the last season! And Alex was so far out of character, it was ridiculous. I'm not even gonna say! God that was sad!

Total and utter disappointment. Poor poor writing. (Ahh, I'm done now)

Glad to see that someone else besides me was pissed about that!! Good blog, ladies.

Tyra and Gaydar: who thought that was a good idea?

Well, Tyra wasn't even sure about it. But she had a doctor come on to predict the sexual orientations of 6 guys on her show today. It was... very odd. Although the doctor guessed every guy right, Tyra kept acknowledging how offensive the gay community could find the entire episode. I'm a little mixed up about it myself.
    pecola's picture

This Vlog was a good idea.

This weekend, as I was listening to Lori rant on the previous episode of SMMWT about Tila Tequila, I thought: wow, they should just make a video blog just for ranting and--voilà--here it is. I love this vlog, particularly the format and graphics.

I'm glad I hadn't seen the pilot for Women's Murder Club before I saw I the premiere on Friday or my disappointment might be more palpable. I felt much the same way about WMC that I did Private Practice...I liked the work part, but the personal stuff left a little to be desired (Laura Harris' dalliance with her boss was particularly nauseating).

Poor Katherine Heigl. I think she's absorbed some of Izzie's flightiness. Scrubs, really? What's next? Stethoscopes? Good work, Katherine, let's just make it a little bit easier for folks to pigeonhole you.

As for Degrassi, I certainly share your frustration. Like you, I wasn't bothered that Paige and Alex broke up (it seemed inevitable given Deanna's departure), but the manic nature of their characters during this episode drove me crazy. The writers of Degrassi seem content pushing the envelope (or, as they like to say, "go there"), without much concern or consideration for how they get there. I wonder if they're taking lessons from Ilene Chaiken.

I'm also a little disappointed that in back-to-back Degrassi episodes, they've broken up the show's two gay couples (first Dylan and Marco, then Paige and Alex)...I'm not sure what kind of message that sends to the younger audience. It's disheartening to know that a show that had really done a lot in the area of visibility could regress so quickly.

    LostSoul's picture

    Thank you...

For bringing up "Degrassi's" outrageously demeaning behavior in last week's episode...We Palex fans could've gotten a nicer send off with our 'ship then what we got...We appreciate the support! :)

Yay! I vote yes for anything that involves more Sarah and Lori. Especially ranting.

I'm not a Degrassi follower, but I have friends who are, and I know how upset they are over this whole thing. Bad, bad choice.

And I will continue to love Katherine Heigl beyond all this designer scrub business, but I have to admit, I choked on my soda when I read about it for the first time a few months ago.

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

    FOX Sucks....again

And FOX strikes again, slapping their loyal fanbase. I am not surprised. They did this to the X-Files fans back in the day when everyone was starting to get on this thing called the "internet" and making fan pages for everything. A lot of companies and show creaters were all "Oooo, great free advertising!" But FOX? Nope, they got all "OMG, shut down all the fan sites!" and sent a LOT of cease and desist orders to shut them down or be sued or whatnot. I'll tell ya, I knew a LOT of fans who stopped buying stuff and got generally ticked off at FOX for all of that...stupid heads closed down a lot of wonderful sites too. Bah. Yes FOX, you are number one stupid heads.
    SterlingMB's picture

    Awesome Ranting!!

I totally agree with everything said in the VLOG! Once again you two rock...

As for Degrassi...well I haven't seen the episodes yet (ironic that we're even getting our own shows second hand up here now, here being in Canada). Either way I'm pretty upset about the scenario you described. One of the big things about Degrassi (specially true of the original series which was on during my early teens)...the writers always used to consult their teenaged actors about the storylines to make sure things were coming across as genuine and true to life. Seems like a little success as made them abandon their roots. Sad...SON is no Emmy winner by far, but I doubt they would even chuck Spashley that way.

Looks like all the pressure is gonna be on Cashmere Mafia to provide decent visibility and strong rational female roles this year!! (with being Bionic Sackhoff and Sarah Headey Connor!!)

    Thanks again Sarah and Lori...
