Who Thought THAT Was a Good Idea? January 14, 2008

The lucky folks who made this week's countdown of dumb celebrity and entertainment news include Lifetime, The L Word, and The View's Sherri Shepherd (two words: "lesbian lifestyle").

We also take on the media coverage of Hillary Clinton, and a Fox employee run amuck. Because black SUV's aren't weapons, boys and girls!

    Jennifer Beals for Office

    Excellent points made regarding EVERYTHING.

It is a shame that The View came off so ignorant, but thank goodness for Jennifer Beals, especially the comment regarding not all people have someone to do their hair and makeup for 2 hours. She was beautiful and eloquent and the ladies from The View could not compare.

As for the sexist coverage of Hillary, all that the old school white men can do is play the ignorant stereotypical cards against her, because as Lori said it just shows a lack of intellegence. Can Hillary receive the same amount of respect as the other candidates? Insult her views, her past, but not her womanhood. The sexist men of the world have made me glad that I moved into the "lesbian lifestyle" ala Sherri Shephard.

I love you ladies! Thanks again!

    Fox News?!!!  Now

    Fox News?!!!

Now there's the bastion of fair and impartial journalism (NOT)  I just hope you guys over there don't make the same mistake of electing in someone who decides after they get power they no longer represent the people but only work to their own agenda.

    Dude what about Paris..

Last night I nearly spit out what I was drinking when Paris Hilton was handed the mic to talk about how "hot" the L word was. That really made me mad. All those chicks on the view are as dumb as a box of rocks, except Whoopi. Anyone remember that "earth is flat" comment. Cause I sure do. Is anybody feeling frustrated at the sudden deteriation of media and culture?

    Paris was ...

Paris at the The L Word thing was just so like Paris Hilton ...I think that "hot" is the only adjective she knows ..I thought that her comment was actually really funny ...It's incredible that someone can say things like that ..and still be popular/famous around the world ( I'm from Poland) :)

We have a "No Paris" rule

Lori and I decided when we started this vlog that we wouldn't cover any Paris, Lindsay, or Britney news unless absolutely necessary, because if we did, one of them would always be on the list, and because the mainstream media covers them to death and we're sick of hearing about them! So that's why Paris's remarks didn't make the list. :)

    Rules!

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say thank you for making this a rule.

    you're not alone!

You're definitely not alone -- that rule rules!

Nobody decrees like this rule decrees. You rule, rule. The rule just decrees and rests. You show us how to just be here and that's what we need.

    You guys rule!

    Thank god!

Paris sure as hell doesn't need any more publicity of any kind, for behaving like a prat! If only the tabloids would follow your lead!

Thanks for the vlog, by the way :)

Damn right I'm good in bed, I can sleep for days!

    Sorry about that Sarah.

Didn't mean to make it a topic it just really got under my skin. I just want her to leave this planet. I probably am the biggest Paris hater here. My mother is the spitting image of her and I get sick over it.

Yeah.  Paris Hilton sucks.  The deterioration of culture can hardly be described as sudden.

    Anyone got a mirror?

Wait, white people aren't female? Cue identity crisis...

Admittedly I've missed a lot of election coverage, not being from the US and all, but is it really worse than Jenny? Could it possibly be?

    I thought you guys were

I thought you guys were gonna talk about paris being at the Lword premiere. Didn't make the list.

Great job on the view comments! I too was, Lesbian Lifestyle? HUH? And god, isn't Jennifer Beals an absolute genious. She's remarkable. Both Beals & Cybil killed it on the view. Good for them. :D.

    kreigen's picture

    Yet again

Right as always... Jenny is just becoming stupid now. At least around season 1-2 she was kinda likable as well as a bit crazy. Poor Mia Kirshner getting saddled with that role. I think The View will just give Beals and Shepard creedit for handling it so well. Maybe they should just get out a black SUV...

And what is it with the whole Clinton voice thing? It's like complaining male voices are too "gruff" all the time, it's just seems like picking at straws...pretty pathetic.

At least we all have the vlog to make up for it :)

    Blood ties

I hope someone else does pick up blood ties. I started watching because of how much lori gushed about it and got completely addicted :P

    Blood Ties

I hadn't heard about Blood Ties, so boooo! I hope CTV can find an American station to jump on. SciFi would be perfect.

Sherri Shepherd... Wow. I used to think she was hilarious when Ellen (she of the most famous lesbian lifestyle) had her on her show doing silly things. The video of Sherri crashing her way down the luge run always made me laugh, but now I'm a bit diabolical with the laughter. What a dangerously ignorant woman. I like to think that viewers are too smart for her comments, but I'm sure she has a lot of supporters out there. Who probably want women in the lesbian lifestyle to go fall off the edge of the flat earth. Argh!

On a positive note, you two are always a delight! Thanks.

    7OF9's picture

I can't play that game other

I can't play that game other wise I may never will be sober again. The veiw was just plain awful. Although Whoopi's expression were priceless. The only thing Whoopi did wrong because of the lack of homework she pointed out that Marlee Matlin just joined the cast as well at the end of the interveiw.
    Angela's picture

    Funny.

Running over someone isn't supposed to be funny, but I laughed out loud.

Sherri Sheppard...one more reason to hate The View, and one more reason to love Beals.

Jenny on The L Word = the new Max.

As far as the media covering Hiliary goes. My view is a lot different then you guys. Full disclsoure. I don't like her. Anyhow...I don't think it's sexest. In my opinion of all the things I've seen and heard I think they just hate her. She treats the media like crap. She won't let them travel with her like everyone else. She doens't allow access to her in the same maner as everyone else. In turn, they treat her like crap. Never give her the benefit of the doubt, and pounce on her whenever they get a chance. Fair or not. That's how it's alway worked with her. Unitl recently, she's been making more of an effort to be more accessible (aka friendly), like Obama. So, I think caddy remarks come from anger towards her for how she treats these journalists, rather then it being cause she's a woman.

    egret's picture

    Clinton hatred

I don't know how she is with the media, but I think in general that a lot of people just reflexively hate her, no matter what she is saying or how she says it. As far as I can tell, New York's been happy with her as a senator and she has more experience than many of the candidates running, but some people (most of my family included) just hear her name and start growling, insisting that she has never done anything and would ruin the country.

I think she probably is far more wary of the media than any of the others - who else has had a worse time with them? - but I think some of the rough coverage is from that same kind of automatic hatred.

And Sarah and Lori's point is exactly right on - who else, no matter how prickly with the press or reviled by some of the public, would be described using terms like weepy or shrill or any of the rest of it?

Also, I'm really sad about Blood Ties - I thought they were going to pick it up. What do they have that is anywhere near as popular, anyway? Old Hallmark movie re-runs? Maybe Sci-Fi will take it...

    Name Calling

happens to everyone in politics. Men are routinely called weak, wimpy, clueless, etc. Obama gets crap for "preaching" because of the cadence of his stump speech. Hillary does sound strident and shrill often, and unless she starts taking testosterone to deepen her voice it will keep happening. She has a higher voice than the men, and when she gets excited and raises the volume it gets higher and thinner, and yes....shrill. Obviously many pundits only point it out because they despise her, but even though I do not, there are times I find myself wincing and turning down my volume.

Not to defend The View at

Not to defend The View at all but it has always seemed to me that they do very shoddy interviews over there, not just with this particular one. When Meredith used to host, she was the one who always had the research behind the questions and ever since she left, the interviews are getting worse and worse. I feel bad for anyone who ever goes on that show to be interviewed, all they do for an hour is interrupt each other and nothing of importance ever gets said.

It's sad that a show of all women that's made for women is clearly that bad.
    beecharmer79's picture

    More Jenny

I say if giving Jenny more screen time leads to more re-enactments of her soon to be movie, than I'm all for it...because couldn't that lead to the return of Dana for a bit? or perhaps Carmen as well?? Other than that, watching the Jenny scenes is hurtful on several levels. Mia Kirshner is one heckuva patient actress to be saddled with that role.

As for Blood Ties, I have to say I enjoy Moonlight far more. Any word if Moonlight has been picked up yet?

    Kaisa's picture

    Clinton media coverage

I'm so glad you two touched on the way the media is covering Hillary Clinton. It's really driving me up the wall. You will NEVER hear or read someone describe the male candidates in such ridiculous terms. I just can't even read the coverage anymore, as soon as I see/hear the red-flag words like "strident" or "shrill," it's time to put down the paper or turn off the tv...preferably before my head explodes.
    ice cream's picture

    Chaiken- get a clue!

i was pumped to see you guys complaining about outrageous and stupid Jenny's storyline is and that she is getting WAY TOO MUCH screen time! Tina needs to knock that bitch out and fast. And... P.S. we need more BETTE please-- NOT more Jenny! www.eyeslikealeopard.com
    Zabe's picture

    Jennifer Beals rules

I hope Bette and Tina will be a happy couple in the 6th season... They really deserve to be together and I want to watch them more than Jenny too, but I'm tired that Bette is always angry or playing in the back of her girfriends...

And, of course, I'm amazed by the way Jennifer Beals always saves every situation with only a few words. In all the interviews I've watch of her she's just wonderfull. It surprised me how interviewers can be stupid and ignorant but it just shows more how Jennifer Beals is intelligent! Ilene Chaiken has made a good choice when putting her on the show : not only she's beautiful and incredibly good, she also helps us to get a better image in the "straight's world".

I must admit your no Paris rule is more than perfect : it's the the best think I've ever heard about her lol. All the medias around her just pisses me off sometimes... Can we read newspapers without having to watch her face just once?

SUVs, Blood, and Jenny, oh my.

I am laughing at the fact it was a BLACK SUV. Even FOX employees are cliché.

I hope someone else picks up Blood Ties. I mean no more Cox. *weeps* Wait, that didn't sound right.

I am enjoying Jenny so far. I just accept what she is and enjoy the ride.

    Jenny

I still love her though she is getting a little much. She's so different from the innocent jewish girl that was going out with Tim 5 years ago. Is that what lesbianism does to a person? Doesn't paint a good picture does it?
I do like the Lez Girls movie storyline though just because it is really funny. I've never been a fan of Tina (she was better in Angel) so I enjoy how much Jenny pisses her off. But I really want her to be at least a little bit nice to her cute fan, being mean to her is like kicking a puppy.
I always have liked harsh characters in shows: Ling, Nelle and Ritchard Fish in Ally Mcbeal for example. But the good thing about them is however nasty and cold they first appear deep down they are good people. While Jenny seems to be hollow. The only character she is ever nice to now is Shane. So come on Ilene, give Jenny a storyline that shows Jenny does have a heart hidden somewhere beneath that shallow, self centred and cruel exterior.

Sarah! When are we gonna have vlog-wear on the website? I would totally buy some of the stuff (like the mugs and t-shirts), and I'm more than positive other ladies would as well. Not to mention, that could be a great way to meet others "in the lifestyle". Who wouldn't want to chat up a chica in a Baby Bridget Tee?

    Bridget t-shirts

You can already buy Bridget tees, here: http://www.zazzle.com/bridgetmcmanus.

I was actually wearing one of Bridget's shirts in the vlog, too - the "Yes I'm gay so stop bothering me" one - but the type was just too small to be legible, unfortunately. Still a fun shirt, though! :)

to save Blood Ties/from Tanya Huff's LJ

"So for those of you who haven't seen it -- and from the amazing response most of you seem to have -- Watch with Kirstin on E! Online has a piece on Blood Ties... here.

    This is the important part:

--According to Blood Ties executive producer Randy Zalken, even though the show is off the air in the States, all is not lost. When asked about possibly getting the show back into production, he says, "We're hopeful." Why? Because of fans like you. According to Zalken, "We're very happy with the support of the online fans," and he thinks the built-in audience is strong enough to attract new backers to the show.--

Go fen!  Like I've said in the past, you guy rock!

The rest of the article goes on to discuss how this could happen.   As I'm writing this, there's already 327 comments so drop on by, add your two cents worth, and  prove that fan support is out there beyond any network doubt.

    That'll show 'em.  *g*"

    The View From Here

The entire interview on The View was awful--from Elizabeth and Sherri's cuddling from the outset to the obligatory what's the difference between kissing a man and a woman question to "the UPS Worker" lesbians. Even Cybil Shepard's comments about straight men enjoying the show seemed unnecessary. It was just terrible.

But Jennifer Beals...wow...so, so impressive. I thought her answer on the primary question was great. If I were a campaign, I'd put her on the trail as a surrogate, right now...and pray that she doesn't run against you for political office later. And how cute was that story about her daughter signing? Too cute.

I'd complain about Jenny too, but she kinda made one of my all time L Word fantasies come true this week, so I'm inclined to cut her a little slack.

    Feminist I am!

It’s just so upsetting and frustrating to see and hear blatant sexist remarks being used without a hint of unease. Horrified that when electing a president, people can resort to making sexist remarks. I mean agenda should be everyone’s priority not how screechy someone voice is. It’s scary. It seems that it is so easy to belittle women this way and even worst that people get away with it. It is upsetting but I’m not shocked, I just forget that the modern world hasn’t grown up yet, even though I see it every day at work. I work in a male dominated industry (Gas Engineer) and it’s a tough job getting through the sexist comments (almost) every day. Although the company is clear on its sexism and racism policy a lot of the time sexist comments are always followed “but it was only a joke” or you’re make to feel like an unreasonable man-hating feminist. I feel this is how guys get out of every time. Girls don’t want to feel that they are going all feminist on guys. What is wrong with that!? Prejudice is prejudice. Although of course a lot or most guys(i know) aren’t sexist, I know that a lot of guys are only joking. But a lot of guys are not. Only the other day I had an engineer who I had never met before say to me in front of my colleagues “come round to my house, I’ve got something you can service”. Gobsmacked!

Hope I didn’t come across as an unreasonable male hating feminist. Although feminist I am!

Great Vlog Sarah and Lori :)

    Dream...

Another excellent Vlog.  Nice to see you back in your regular 'uniforms'.  Lori, was that a Baby Bridget t shirt you had on???

Regarding The L Word....what if it is ALL a big dream....Dana dying, Jenny's story arc, Carmen leaving and Shane not being married  etc etc.  Well....if we can deal with IC's storyline, what's to stop us from making one that could be better, if only in our OWN dreams?

    Ediana's picture

    A bit puzzled.  Why

A bit puzzled.  Why do Lori and Sarah want The L Word to be a snooze?  Kirshner is what makes this show and Jenny Schechter is one of the more fascinating characters on television.  You know what - Chaiken is smart here.  She listened to all the fans  who apparently hated Jenny and cut seriously into her screentime last two years and what happened....boredom.  We need somebody that is offkilter and delusional and complex.  Watching Bette and Tina wonder if they will ever get back together or the dullness that is Jodi or the sourness in Alice and Tasha is sleep inducing.  The L Word is receiving it's best reviews in years and the reason is quite simple.  For all the annoyance audiences express at complex, difficult female characters, it is what keeps one involved and it is what Kirshner (and the character of Jenny) bring to the game.  There is already more suspense in Jenny's possible downfall than any of the other plotlines.  If it wasn't for Jenny and Shane it would be bye bye time.  Now if only they can give us back the comic skills of Hailey we would be set.

The other 4 points were well expressed but I expect better when it comes to TV analysis (than piling on to something so off base).

    Cheat Shots

I agree with the ridiculous remarks people are making about Hillary Clinton; eventhough, I may not be voting for her. I does seem like candidiates and the media are attacking Hillary Clinton a lot, but she appears to taking most the attacks very well.

I am all about the Scifi channel. Great comment!

I have grown tried of the L Word also; it is worse than watching a Soapa.  It is not getting better each episode, and it only appears to be gettiing worse. I try to physic myself out through some episodes tell myself "no, Shane did not leave Carmen".  Carmen was hot.

Who cares about Paris and Brittany.

    GREAT RULE!

"Stupidity charge" LOL loved that. I´m sorry that they cancelled your show Lori it sounded great.

I wasn´t surprised to hear what Sherry said on The View, since she is into the "Lifestyle of being Stupid ignorant". But I agree that JB was great, and she really kept it cool even with the stupid questions.

Jenny´s character is so over the top that I actually find it funny.

It´s so sad to hear that they are treating Hillary that way, and to hear that allegeadly serious newspapers can adopt such a sexist position... it´s plain pathetic.

    Lori love your BB t-shirt!!!!

WOw, i've heard rumors that Sherri was a moron... But hearing her talk....Feels like nails being hammered into my brain.. OMG... how the hell does one, like her, get on TV?

And that other lady, sitting to Cybil's right, she's pretty moronic as well.

YOU GUYS (Sarah and Lori) should be the one's on TV! What is wrong with the world?

    jamlawgirl's picture

    I agree with all your

I agree with all your points here especially with numbers 1 and 2.

Why, oh why are those of us who are trying to keep watching TLW being subjected to more Jenny and the HORIBBLE and pointless Lez Girls storyline?!? Ilene? Anyone?

And I gotta tell ya, if there was any doubt in my mind that sexism is alive and well (and there wasn't) Hillary's run for office and the comments and reactions on the news and on online blogs and forums etc certainly took care of that. It truly makes me sad sometimes to hear the fear and ignorance that people, both men and women, express at the very thought of having a woman as President.

And has Fox News given up all attempts at appearing to be a credible news network? They seem more off kilter that usual lately. But I guess having a black man and a woman both perched to possibly occupy the highest office in the country is driving them more than a little batty. Oy.

    newjhk13's picture

What is so offensive about saying lesbian lifestyle?

I was watching a video blog on afterellen and they brought up the debacle of J Beals and C Shepherd's interview on the view.  The hosts S Warn and some other lady stated that they were offended by Sherri Shepherd's statement that Cybill's character was entering the lesbian lifestyle.   They even compared it to saying "How would Sherri like it if someone asked her about entering the black lifestyle?"  WTF!!!  When I hear the term lesbian lifestyle I think about dating lesbians and having sex with lesbians.  Why is that offensive?   Also, what does she mean by black lifestyle?  How does one enter the black lifestyle?  That is the dumbest statement I've heard in all my life.  And yes, I believe they were dead serious when they made it.  Am I missing something?
