This week, Tracy and Angela from LesbianGamers.com finally get their hands on Rock Band on Xbox 360 for review. They devote the entire reviews section to it and even show off Tracy's special felt covered drums.
There's also clip of Tracy playing in her PJs, a home-made rock band in action, and the usual viewer feedback, topped off nicely with Site Guff and some insights into rhythm games and bodily functions. Gay Girls Who Game Episode 21 "Rock Band Edition"

guitar hero world tour vs. rock band.
Guitar Hero World Tour
o....m.....g....... ok.. yes we've seen the trailer and we are desperately awaiting the cool drums! Yes, it's unfortunate that it'll be yet more peripherals (as discussed in the vlog), but this just looks awesome. Also the fact you can record your own songs... nice.
Hmm...... wait for it or get Rock Band... GET ROCK BAND NOW!
Yeah..
This show is SO WRISTCUFFY !!

Geekdom becomes everyone
Sega Genisis was a fun console, I loved playing that when I was 5.
Have fun Skiing with, but snow boarding is so much easier ^.^
Felt is suck a good idea, i covered mine with washclothes or towels.
Isn't the drummer the one that's replacable ;)
HAWT! heh randomness is the best.
I think that baby pictures of tracy are needed.
Also totally thought you were going somewhere else with that "empty house" comment. (guttermode --- on)
animal crossings!
I liked planting fruits and flowers best. :-D
I loved that game... except when I didn't play it for two months and then i came back and my house was full of roaches.
that was extremely depressing.
pokemon snap! awe. i loved finding out all the special things you could do... throwing bait and balls... oh the memories!
anyway... ROCKBAND!!!
I rock at the drums! I have a real microphone & mic stand, and i'll take out my mic and put on the rockband mic, so i can play drums and sing at the same time.
it's really hard.
i get what you're saying about repeating songs, but if you were in a REAL rock band, you would have to play the same songs over and over in every different city while you're touring, so in that way it's very realistic. :P
Did you guys ever play zelda phantom hourglass for ds? I'm a big zelda geek, but I still haven't bought that. I just want to know if you'd recommend it.
Oh, and this is one of my favorite vlogs ever. Just fyi.
Janet: Everybody's talking about it.
Amy: About what?
Janet: How you met Lucy and lived to tell about it. They're calling you a hero, when really you're a slut.
Amy: You shut up
Janet: A gay slut.
Worth playing
Hey Booger!
I'm halfway through (well I think so, I don't know how far I'm into it to be honest) Zelda Phantom Hourglass at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it. I've always loved Japanese style rpg's and adventure games and this one does not disappoint. Can't remember if the girls have ever mentioned it but just thought I'd let you know I'd rate it very highly.
oh
awesome! thanks for the vote of confidence. it looked good, and i really liked how they carried over the art style from wind waker...
i'm sold! :]
Janet: Everybody's talking about it.
Amy: About what?
Janet: How you met Lucy and lived to tell about it. They're calling you a hero, when really you're a slut.
Amy: You shut up
Janet: A gay slut.
Mic Stand
Ok, I am officially jealous you have a mic stand. I tried to hold the mic.. someplace... and it wasn't really working as it should LOL. We looked at the price of those stands and man they're expensive!
It's extremely cool that you have one! Rock onnnnnnnn
Yup we did indeed play Zelda. Angela has it and didn't have enough time to devote to it so plays it on and off! She likes it.
I agree with Pambi about
I agree with Pambi about the baby pictures ^^
Rock Band seems really cool, especially the drum set but when I saw the price of the thing I was disappointed; sadly it's really too expensive.
Can't wait for next week's episode
Have fun rocking Australia !
I'm a drum hog, too...
Rock band is so glorious! Drums are definitely the most fun. It's kind of lame that guitar hero world tour is going to have a totally different set, although it does look cooler. Slightly.
Are you guys fans of Kororinpa Marble Mania for Wii? It's one of the cutest and most addictive games ever...and I feel this way because I just played it for 2 hours! yay!
Rock on!
Hi Ladies,
Oooh, another reason to get XBox 360. What other consoles is Rock Band released on? Sorry if this has already been answered.
Not sure if it's my browser or what but I noticed the text that pops up at the start of the vlog have white font on white background which makes it really hard to read.
Hmmm.....Wii Fit has no bedside manner. If I was in your shoes, Angela, I'd probably accidentally chuck the Wii Fit onto the tv. No safety strap on THAT thing. LOL.
I've a question for Tracy's mum (uh-oh) - did you ever limit Tracy's game time when she was a wii (yes, pun very much intended) lass? ;)
White text
Hey...
That was me.. I'm a dumbass and it was too late to change it. It won't happen again.. I promise :o)
Rock Band is also out on the PS3 and the PS2 and is meant to be out this month for the Wii. As another poster mentioned though, probably better to avoid the PS2 and Wii versions as there's no downloadable content :o(
xx
Another great rhythm game
To whoever was into Elite Beat Agents on the DS I highly recommend Taiko no Tatsujin (Taiko Drum Master). It's a Japanese game but well worth the import. I'm more hooked on it than EBA. It's a rhythm game where you use two stylus to beat along to the rhythm. Also the Japanese version/s of EBA are also worth considering if you like that game because they have different songs and stories to go along with them.
Now on to Tracy's mum. Having not been able to think up a suitable embarassing question I will leave both Tracy and her mum to answer this same question. Tell us the best story about the other that embarrassed you.
Catch ya's!
Rock Band
That looks like a ton of fun!! I am jealous!
I really hope Guitar Hero: On Tour is a half as much fun, I am impatiently waiting for it to come out in Europe!!!
--- "In three words I can sum up everything I know about life: it goes on" Robert Frost ---
ROCK BAND!!!!!
I was unsure about how good it was going to be as I really love the Guitar Hero series.
When I eventually got to play it last week, I was hooked for about 3 hours non-stop! The drums are totally addictive in this and the guitar buttons are harder to get used to than those on the guitar hero controller, but I guess it's just what you're most used to!
I flet the songs were ok, but there could have been a few more well known ones like Guitar Hero is starting to do. Hopefully the songs will be better if they make a second version!
Geeks United!
Fun vlog today, ladies- I thouroughly enjoyed it.
Angela- thank you so much for loving the movie Xanadu! I have yet to find people who enjoy it as much as I do... even as cheesy as it is. And I do also have the orginial LP of the soundtrack to Xanadu, so I think that helps push me up in the ranks of geekiness. The question for you though- is what Star Trek stuff do you collect? All of it or just certain series? I never really got into the original series but I do love TNG and Voyager.
Tracy- I don't believe the word "cheating" ever crossed my keyboard! I said you might have "help". However, that look of death you gave the camera scares me- so the next time you claim "photographic memory".. I'll believe you!
I've played Rock Band and it's a lot of fun. I have to say, it's a little expensive (at least around here) and that is why I haven't bought it yet, but hopefully I can save up for it in the near future. My friends and I spent most of our time creating the perfect band members.
And the burning question for both of you: Ninja or Pirate? (I saw Angela's t-shirt and it made me think of the age old question- who would win? Ninja or Pirate?)
A warning for PS2 users . . .
Just a thought for anyone else with a PS2 . . . reconsider getting RockBand until you've gotten a newer console. My very generous and well-meaning family got me RockBand for Christmas. I didn't have the heart to tell them that I wasn't going to buy the game until I had upgraded systems. It is still tons o' fun, but the gameplay is severely limited when compared to XBox 360 and (i imagine) PS3. Less songs, no character customization, simplified World Tour . . . it basically plays like a glorified Guitar Hero II. Just my opinion, of course. It's a lot of money to spend on one game, after all. Might as well make sure you have a version that's going to keep you interested.
To the lovely GGWG ladies:
Thanks so much for the vlog. Every episode has been fabulous. I would definitely have commented before if I'd had something more to add to the discussion beyond "Ya'll are awesome . . . in a totally geekin' way."
More specifically, thanks for the felt idea. Whenever I'm playing RockBand with friends, someone will inevitably complain that they can't hear the track over the sound of drums being hit. (Excuses, excuses.) Living in an apartment, I always feel guilty playing my rythmn games, anyways, and try to keep the sound in check as much as possible.
And finally . . . loved the energy-efficient idea-bulb.
Felt things..
Angela says you can put foam under it to stop it making as much noise, but I was scared to do that incase I lost some of the sensitivity! Others have done it though and it works fine. If you're feeling crafty, you can crochet covers (blah).
Glad you spotted the energy efficient lightbulb!
Rock band review!!
Now I understand why my neighbors love to play Rock Band so much. Unfortunately for me, they love to play it a 3 frakkin' AM in the morning! Thank dog for ear plugs. Now I have to figure out how to get my neighbors to try the awesome stickyback felt modification for their drumset. : )
Anyway, loved your venn diagram homage for Lori. That was cool! I didn't end up playing much on my dreamcast, as we managed to appease the angry lake gods by sacrificing marshmallows to the fire pit, and thus had better weather than anticipated. But I did spend some time with Sno-Cross Championship Racing by Crave Entertainment. I had forgotten how much better that game is than Arctic Thunder (PS2).
And you are going to leave us with a cliffhanger?!?!? Oh Noes!!! Looking forward to your tales of terror on the snowy slopes (with stick things)! ; )
edit: Ok, a couple of questions for Tracy's mum: Are you enjoying your visit, and have they made you try every different game console in the house? Are you a bigger fan of (real national team, not video game) rugby or futball/soccer or neither? Who is currently your favorite musician/band? Got any stories that would embarrass Tracy? Will you share them? ; )
And lastly, what is the craziest thing you have ever done (that was legal, of course....or not)?
Love watching your vlogs
Love watching your vlogs because it always gets me even more exicted about gaming, you should ask Nintendo for a commission fee.
Qn for tracy do you ever still use the word wee for the word little? It took me ages to stop using it as a kid, ppl just thought i was being rude or random.
Sorta geeky but not quite enough
Angela
If I want to comment on a LesbianGamers articule on your site can I do it by just being logged in to the forum there or do I need to login in some otherway? Just slightly confused, obviously I belong to the "geekyness is learned" camp and not the "its in your genes" camp (of course I feel the oppisite about certain other questions this applies to).
I like your V-blog alot and play computer games a couple nights a week (my partner is totally uninterested but at least I've convinced her I'm not a secert blood thirsty whacking moron...."honey I'm still a nice girl and wouldn't hurt a flea, I just like to run around the country side in armour and carry a big sword"). I only play on the PC and mostly adventure games and RPG's so I don't totally fit in with
allmost of what you talk about. Ask me why only the PC (besides mods!).....mostly because we still have to get up to change the sound on our TV, its that old and small, very very small. All that will change soon when we will be forced to get a new TV here in the States for the HD change. (I KNOW we could just get a switch over box thingy but don't be saying that! I want a new TV and this old one just won't die. We've had it 17 years, I'm serious, maybe even longer)I hang out a lot on the GameBoomers forum, mostly on the Darkside but I'm trying to see if I can't fit into your site and forums. I'm playing Oblivion right now and was very dissapointed to read on your site that FarCry2 won't have a female charector. That's so lame and backward.
Thanks
Nipomo (hiding in the bathroom and sticking pins in a small, very small TV shaped softy)
Rockband! Finally!
Sooo glad you guys finally got rockband. Now you know what the hype is all about! Lovin the felt pads you made for the drums. So what are your favorite songs so far?
My band Repercussions of Procreation beat the game on medium. We had to do an eight song set to beat it and it was a compilation of all the longest songs on there. My arms where rubber after that!
Angela - I wanted to give you a compliment on the glasses you were wearing on the Hot 100 countdown vid. They were very cute.

Rockband
As a drummer of 26 years, I was VERY disappointed with the drum kit for this game - mostly because you can't adjust the "slant" of the drum pads. Obviously, nothing can compare to a real drum set, but I'd hoped for a little more. I ended up ditching the drum set and sticking with guitar to play the game. My favorites: Wanted Dead Or Alive by Bon Jovi and Welcome Home by Coheed & Cambria. I like to think that "I've seen a million faces and I rocked them all" while playing! ;)
Guitar Hero is coming out with GH4/World Tour in which they too will feature a drum kit - complete with cymbals - so I'll be interested to see if theirs is a little closer to realism. http://www.guitarhero.com/
All in all, I'm HIGHLY addicted to Rockband and the Guitar Hero series and play daily. There...I admitted it.
ROCK ON!
Yeah. Disappointing drums
As a drummer of 7 years (I've been playing since I was 12) I too was disappointed by the kit. The sensitivity on my first set was awful and I had to send them back...even the second set isn't that good. I still play them though.
I just saw the trailer for GH4 and it looks amazing. Well the drumkit does...I saw a video and Travis Barker and Chad Smith both gave it a thumbs up...so it seems promising. Also the pads are touch sensitive and I don't think they're raised up like the Rockband set.
Party.
Excited!!
I got so excited when I saw the Rock Band drum set, but I was distracted about the colours being a little off. I was so happy when you explained that you'd modified it, since I was going nuts trying to figure out why the colours were different. It sounds like a good idea, but I'm not sure if that's something I'll be doing anytime soon, as the drums are in semi-retirement. I much prefer the guitar, and I am so happy for the second set of buttons, since I have small hands.
Also, thank you for the recommendations for more Elite Beat Agentish games. I will be checking all of those out.
Mass Effect is out for PC!
Mass Effect?

"Why that ain't no grain of truth, that's the truth about grains..."
Loved the Sega!
Loved the Sega and the Jungle Strike, Desert Strike etc. franchise... so much so that I seriously thought about buying a Sega on ebay and replaying them....
I look forward to your vlog every week, you gals are so funny and seem so happy with one anothers company...
Hope you have fun on your snowboarding trip...Tracy...be careful and don't injure those RockBand wrists.....
Question for mom: "Do you wish Tracy lived closer to you?"
Rock band edition and hot list!
hey guys!!
first of all thank you for taking the time to make the little videos commenting on the hot 100 list because well you are of course awesome in it. you're also cute and well let's face it you're way hot!! So that's a big added bonus you know to have hot geeky gamers presenting you hot chicks... I've spent the last days checking to see if it was christmas or not... I dunno maybe in Australia??? ;-)
Anyway thanks for that!!! As far as the vlog is concerned let me finish it tomorrow because it's late and I'm tired but I'm not worried as always it will rock!
"I'm gonna give you all a nice, fun, normal evening even if I have to kill every person on the face of the Earth to do it"
I too live in the land of no rock band
...and am mighty sad about that too!
Looked sooooo much fun! Will have to wait and see if the next Guitar Hero release is actually released here, then get a new born and then sell said new born for it! Sigh.
Two questions this week - do you know of any 'Meta' search engines for video games or similiar websites? What I want to do is type in the name of a game i've just finished or really liked and it would recommend titles based on that. I've seen sites do it with songs and bands, but never video games.
Also, say a title comes out on all platforms (of which you have all), how do you choose which version to buy? Coin flip? Controller preference? Ouija board?
Question for Tracy's Mum - Do you find it difficult to understand Angela's accent? Perhaps if she talks too quick or something?
Mia Hamm Soccer 64
ROCK BAND!
yeah, i love guitar hero so i´m going to love this game, i have to save money for buy that drum set , oh my god just think about how funny will be makes me happy.
Question for Mum: Had ever Tracy play drums or sing at in a school show? how was it?
rock band~!
Firstly, Animal Crossing is awesome! When I was in undergrad I spent many hours on the original Game Cube on undergrad.I now have Animal Crossing wild world on my Ds.
Now onto Rock band- I don't know if you ladies realized.. the drum sticks are sort of cheaply made with pine wood... I broke my first pair on the Garbage song. So be careful ^.^
OMG POKEMON SNAP!!!
:D I had completely forgotten about that awesome game!! Thankyou so much for reminding me *bows down to infinite wisdom*
Great episode once again, rock band looks really fun, especially the drums! Oh and i'm loving the GGWG contributions to the Hot 100 commentary, so thanks for that too.
Rock Band!
yay! finally rockband! i'm a huge fan of really good "casual" games. the greatest thing about this game for me is how it has helped push the game industry into the mainstream. yeah, it is a bit pricey. but it is such a blast to play as a group!! its def one of the funnest party games ever! i heard ppl are coming down on wii fit being a joke. are you excited about mgs 4? a retro episode is a great idea. maybe do a favorite childhood games episode? it would be cool to hear how you two got into games in the first place. have fun on your snowboarding trip girls!

Oh Em Gee!
Rock Band and off topic
Rock Band looks interesting but it´s far too expensive. Also, I would prefer a classic setup, perhaps with a violin, a flute and hmmm, kettledrums. But hey, that´s just classical trained me.
But something totally off topic:
1. I am still crazy for the first Windows edition of Tetris and I can´t remember at which score the number goes negative. Does anybody here remember the number?
2. Two days ago, I scored a super record (for me) and don´t know where to find other scores to compare. Is there something like a record hall of fame out there? Not the arcade-versions, am only interested in the Windows version. Thanks for any info.
Am I right to assume that PC games are a bit off your radar? I haven´t been watching all your vlogs, only recently, but that was an impression I was getting.
And a question for Mrs Tracy´s Mother: Do you like to play games at all and what would it take to get you to play games on a console or a PC? Appealing concept, brain work, fun, anything?
Thanks for the work, skills and effort you put into these vlogs and thanks for the fun they cause.
As always...
Great episode. I need to get my hands on Rock Band. I know I'll love it!
Oh and (not related to Rock Band) I mentioned once or twice that I wanted a Wii. I finally got one! I went back and watched previous episodes to remember your reviews on Wii games. You ladies are awesome! You make it a lot easier to narrow down which games to buy first. My uncle (who's my mom's baby brother and my best friend) just got the 360 and we've been having fun with GTA 4 (which I help talk him into by having him watch your episode on it!) There just aren't enough hours in the day! One has to give up gaming time to work...Pfft!
Oh and to 'Booger' Re: Zelda Phantom Hourglass on the DS. I have it. I enjoyed it and agree it's worth getting. Especially if you're already a Zelda fan.
Rock on!

You girls are evil!!!!!
After watching your vlog, I had some errands to run....fill up the tank, do a little grocery shopping, pick up Rock Band.....I unboxed the thing, but everything together and settled in to learn some Rock Band guitar (having never played GH). 6 Hours later and I have finished the easy solo tour, unlocked all the bonus songs for easy, done the first couple songs on medium, sang (badly) a couple songs, and am looking at the drum kit next. You girls are just plain evil for doing this to me!
I've also gone and looked at GH World Tour, and for whoever asked, the drum kit is only height adjustable, you can't tilt the pads. It is unclear if the cymbals are height adjustable or just have one height setting. Recording songs sounds like fun, will be interesting to see how they do it. Will you only be able to record songs the game knows, or will there be a way to do original material? We shall see....
Back to Rock Band.... On Easy, it seems you can get 4star or better, even if you are unfamiliar with the song. The songs progress in difficulty so you should be able to become familiar with the guitar fairly quickly. While on Easy, you only have to worry about the first three buttons (green, red, yellow). On Medium, they start tossing in the 4th button (blue), and lots more power chords. Get your pinky working!
Now I do have some musical experience as I played bass in a band in my youth (some drums, and a few power chords on guitar), so that may have helped me some. I was able to 4star most and 5star some of the songs first time though. The drums should prove interesting, and I also want to see how they do bass, which I haven't tried yet. Vocally I suck at Rock Band (which is pretty much how I am in RL too).
All in all, a bunch of fun, and its all because of you Gay Girls Who Game that I am up at 3:45 AM! Work should be fun.....ROCK N' ROLL!
Yay!!
Finally I'm able to see these vlogs again, I hope it lasts lol (I love my ADSL, where A doesn't obviously stand for Awesome... -.-!)!!!
I was so excited at first about Rock Band, and it seems really great, but the price kinda destroyed all my excitement: 280€ really are a lot of money...but Tracy, your love for this game is contagious...I'm starting to feel the urge to buy it...argh!!
I'm especially interested in the singing part (beacuse normally I don't sing enough)
Thanks for your great work and passion!
Oh, and have fun on your trip!
Now I'll go to see the other episodes that I missed!!
For those about to rock...
Awesome as always, ladies! First off - Angela, I am right there with you on the Xanadu love. I always tell people that Olivia Newton John was the first woman in my life, followed by Deborah Harry of Blondie. I didn't come out until I was 20, but looking back on it, I was such a gay kid. I had raging crushes on both women when I was very young, especially Olivia. (This started in 1978 with Grease, of course.)
On to Rock Band... Brilliant! I live in San Francisco and was lucky enough to get this when it came out last November, and I am still playing very regularly. (So, the expense was definitely worth it, given the amount of time and enjoyment I've gotten out of the game.) It really is an industry-changing title. This has far surpassed Guitar Hero for me, because of all the amazing touches. I love that I was able to create my own character, which immediately added an extra layer of fun and depth. I love that the crowd sings along with me when I'm giving a killer performance. I also really enjoy the whole idea of the Band World Tour mode, even though it has a couple of flaws. I could go on and on here.
I giggled at the part about Angela being the #1 groupie, and the caption about her giving "massages and other favors". Hmmm. I should have considered that before I got my partner involved as my bass player. ;) By the way, our band name is Triple Lexxx (in honor of our dog Lex, who watches us play and can't quite figure out what we're up to). Our band motto is "We give love a bad name."
Finally, Angela wondered if Rock Band 2 would have a keyboard. It's funny, because in various previews for Rock Band, a couple of writers speculated about how the game could be expanded, and they joked about a keytar. :) For those of you who haven't spent as much time watching 80s music videos as I have, this is the ridiculous looking contraption that keyboard players sometimes wore in an effort to get out from behind the keyboard and try to look as cool as the lead guitarist. (Hint: the last bit never worked.)
I know a guy who actually
I know a guy who actually owns and plays a keytar. Completely unironically as well. We call it his cheese machine. He actually did a guest spot for my band at a show once and insisted on playing it through much of the set. I was just sitting behind my drums cringing the entire time.
www.myspace.com/stopstartstall - acousticy music type stuff.
I remember running around
I remember running around Houston looking to get this game. It was sold out at 2 Wal-marts I went to and I had to get someone at another Wal-mart to dig deep in the warehouse in the back for it. This was like at 2 A.M. in the morning, because I am a night owl, haha. Played with my friends until like 6 A.M.
I must have downloaded over $50 worth in songs. I submitted a couple of song suggestions on the official website. (Particularly Paramore). I nearly pooped my pants when Crush Crush Crush came out.
I'm primarily the drums player in my group of friends. I can play any song on normal but once I get past that difficulty my inherent lack of rhythm kills me. This is definitely the ultimate party game though.
I saw some previews for the new Guitar Hero and those drums really intrigue me. Reminds me of the Drummania drum set.
Haha, yes those are ddr pads all bungled up in a corner.
sorry
I know it took me forever to post...I had a bad computer week....
Angela your not the only one who would love a stormtrooper, the only reason I got the t3 head...and a couple of t2 heads....was because my mom supported my geekiness and love for the series rest ashore though I paid her back by doing all the house choirs for oh the last 10 years....
I would love to see which alien head you have...personally I can't wait till I see the cross between the alien and predator up for sale...I've seen a few low grade one's here and there but nothen I would commit to..
guitar hero vs. rock band....as much as I would love to say that guitar hero could compete with rock band...I can't....guitar hero is nice but for some reason for me...its not as cool as rock band...rock band for me has slightly more variety for me anyway.
Sticky Felt! Brilliant!
I'm in the UK and I've been
I'm in the UK and I've been waiting for Rock Band since I got Guitar Hero 3 at Christmas and I still can't get over how expensive it is over here! Doesn't it work out to be something like £80 in the US? Nearly double the price is crazy considering all the instruments are exactly the same, and all they had to change was the region code on the game. I think you can it for £140 if you shop around but to a poor student like me it's still a hell of a lot of money :(
Looking forward to a retro gaming episode! I had a mega drive when I was younger, and it got passed down to my younger cousin as most things do in my family. I was struck by a wave of nostalgia a couple of years ago and bought one from ebay with a whack load of games. It's the best thing I ever bought! Micro Machines is still stupidly fun, especially since you can have a load of people playing it. Thirteen years later and I still manage to fall off the pool table every time I round a corner.
