"Fringe" is back with more mystery, more oddity, and more Anna Torv

The first episode of the second season of Fringe starts tonight on Fox — and it's a good one! But then, more Anna Torv is always a good thing.

TheTorchOnline.com recently published an interesting interview with Torv, and I like her answer to this question:

TTO: I think your character was a very brave choice. I mean, you are a very beautiful woman, but they’re not dwelling on that, emphasizing that.
AT: But not only that, I know that I’m regularly described as being very cold and very detached. But I go, “I don’t care you think that, because if I was a guy, you just wouldn’t say that.” Men can be solitary, be on their own, or just not speak.

TTO: Right!
AT: I think it’d be great for her to get a lover in every port!

I don't want to give away any spoilers about the new episode (you can get those on FringeTelevision.com), but I will give you a few teasers: the show picks up exactly where it left off, and somewhere in the episode, Agent Olivia Dunham (Torv) wakes up and suddenly starts speaking Greek.

Intriguing, yes? Just don't expect the episode to answer many of your burning questions (the Fringe writers are good at putting that off).

Olivia, Peter (Joshua Jackson), Walter Bishop (John Noble), Astrid (Jasika Nicole), Agent Broyles (Lance Reddick), Agent Francis (Kirk Acevedo), and the lab's resident cow are all back, and there's also a new female FBI Agent, played by Meghan Markle. I have to admit I wasn't thrilled with either her acting or her character, but I'm hoping both will improve over time.

The cast did a photoshoot to promote the second season, and Fox made a cute video of it:

Now on to the new photos!

First, we have the snazzy new posters, which quite appropriately focus on Olivia.

There are 14 "easter eggs" in this first poster — can you find them all? (Go here for the list.)

A few new cast photos:

And then my favorite photos — a series of spooky shots featuring a single character. Here are the photos of the three women:

Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv)

The fantastically creepy and commanding Nina Sharp (Blair Brown)

FBI Agent/Walter Bishop's lab assistant Astrid (out actresss Jasika Nicole)

Here are a few stills from tonight's episode.

Only Fringe can get away with including a coma, an alternate reality, and a cow wearing a birthday hat in the same episode.

Are you excited about Fringe returning? Come back after tonight's episode to discuss it in the comments.

    Am I excited?

Yes. Very, very excited. Anna Torv is a wonder to behold. Also the show is pretty good. ;-)

Perhaps you assume we all know this...

But shouldn't you point out that Jasika Nicole is out? I feel like usually you do that even when it's someone pretty blindingly obvious like Jane Lynch or Portia de Rossi.

So anyway, just thought I'd point it out for anyone who didn't know!

I just forgot to mention it because I wrote this at the last minute (which is never a good idea! :) It's in the post now.

    Anna Torv, Anna Torv...

Hey, they had about a one second clip of X-Files on the season opener.  I thought that was a very brief and nice tribute. Personally, I don't get the same feel from Fringe that I got from the X-Files and that's fine.  Did I mention that Anna Torv is one of the hottest things going on out there.  I do have others, but she's..hmm..for some reason she is at the top of this genre anyway.

Spoiler just in case you haven't been following.  Don't read past here!

I've always liked well done parallel universe stories. And if it's got Anna Torv in it, I will accept anything they throw at me.

I don't recall seeing that photo...

I don't recall seeing a scene where Agent Dunham is standing and talking to Nina Sharp (as per one of the photos above).  Did I blink and miss it? It was a good episode overall.

It was fun recognizing the various locations in Vancouver in the episode - since I live in Vancouver.  That was also fun to figure out while watching X-Files too.

The 'shout-out' to the shapeshifters from The X-Files was a nice touch.  I had read somewhere that they were going to do that.  If you wanted to make a spoof of that episode you could have Agent Scully be the main shapeshifter in Agent Dunham's dream...

Anna was a guest on The Ellen show today as well.  Near the end of the conversation Ellen said she had seen the first episode of season 2 of Fringe and that it was creepy.  Anna replied, without missing a beat, "but not as creepy as that game in the segment before me." (or something like that.)  Apparently Ellen tried out a new audience game but will not play it again.  :0

    Next episode

You're right, I think it's from the next episode. Sorry! When I was perusing through all the photos to choose from, I somehow missed that.

    I've missed Fringe.

Excited that there is a season 2.

Excited about the start of season 2.

    Excited re: Anna Torv :)

    Just

Saw "Mistresses" and Anna Torv JUMPED out of the screen at me.

And I can say this in all objectivity as I "usually" don't go for blondes... then again, I do go for sultry voices... which makes her an honorary brunette in my mind - so much for objectivity...

(note to self: get season one on DVD pronto)

    blue-c's picture

    Too bad

I suppose, then, that it's too bad she didn't jump ON you.
    rosebud's picture

    Yeah...

    Tell me about it....

    Definitely too bad...

    It was an amazing season

It was an amazing season premiere! I missed the show.

Just one thing. When Olivia woke up from the coma she didn't speak latin. That was Greek and she said "To be a better man than his father"

    Sarah Warn's picture

    Thanks!

Apparently my memory is not as good as it once was — I watched the episode a few weeks ago, and somehow in that time Greek turned into Latin. :) Thanks for the correction.

I was being starved of a good show such as this. Glad it's finally back! Anna Torv is so awsome. And those promo photots are even more so.
