First look at "Defying Gravity," a "'Grey's Anatomy' in space"

I've been a fan of women in space movies ever since I watched Kate Capshaw and Lea Thompson in Space Camp as a kid. Although I've never gotten into the Star Trek or Star Wars franchises too much, because they rarely give women leadership roles — except for Star Trek: Voyager, which I've seen all seven seasons of — and I've only watched some of the Battlestar Galactica episodes, I enjoyed Jodie Foster's Contact (at least the first half), and Lori and I both loved the 2002 Showtime series Odyssey Five.

So I was excited to hear about the new space drama coming to America (and Canada, Germany, and the U.K.).

Last week, ABC purchased 13 episodes of the new Canadian sci-fi drama Defying Gravity, which has this description, "In the near future, eight astronauts from five countries (four women and four men) undertake a mysterious six-year international space mission covering thirteen billion kilometers."

The series stars Ron Livingston (Office Space), Laura Harris (Dead Like Me), Christina Cox (Blood Ties), Malik Yoba (New York Undercover) German actress Florentine Lahme (ABC miniseries Impact), Paula Garces (The Shield, Guiding Light), Eyal Podell (Behind Enemy Lines), and Dylan Taylor (House Party).

Defying Gravity launches on ABC and CTV in Canada on August 2 with a two-hour premiere, and then will air on Sundays at 10pm. All 13 episodes have already been shot, and the series will also air on Canada’s CTV, Germany’s ProSieben and the BBC in the U.K.

Described by one exec as "Grey's Anatomy in space" (not sure how I feel about that), the series revolves as much around the relationships among the crew — who are living in very close quarters for a long period of time — as it does things like wormholes, mechanical problems, and unexplained happenings.

Or as the same exec put it, it's a show with "a sci-fi premise but told in a female-friendly way." And by "female-friendly" he apparently means less of that tricky science stuff, and more talking about your feelings, but I'm going to pretend he didn't say that so I can enjoy the show.

Here's how CTV describes the two-hour premiere:

In the two-hour series premiere (Sunday, August 2 at 9 p.m. ET), two of the eight novice astronauts onboard mysteriously develop heart ailments only hours after leaving Earth's orbit for Venus and a six-year inter-planetary sojourn aboard the spaceship Antares. Replacing the ill engineer, Ajay Sharma (Zahf Paroo) and Mission Commander Rollie Crane (Ty Olsson), are experienced astronauts Maddux Donner (Ron Livingston) and Ted Shaw (Malik Yoba). Donner's arrival disturbs the ship's geologist Zoe Barnes (Canadian Laura Harris), who is linked to him by a strange dream and a romantic encounter from their early training days.

Although nearly every facet of life on the Antares is broadcast to avid viewers on Earth by documentary producer Paula Morales (Paula Garces), there is also a hidden force that appears to be controlling events from within the spacecraft. With the real purpose of the mission known only to flight director Mike Goss (Andrew Airlie) and a select few, the Antares finally leaves Earth's orbit for the immensity of interstellar space.

In the second hour, some rocky and intriguing developments confront the crew as they learn to adjust to life on board the Antares, now well on its way to Venus. In spite of the libido-suppressing HALOS supposedly worn by everyone on board, pilot Nadia Schilling (Florentine Lahme) continues her seductive designs on Donner. Zoe still hears strange cries, seemingly coming from Storage Pod 4 — which is off limits to most of the crew. After Ted, now spaceship commander, is briefed by his wife, scientist Eve Shaw (Karen LeBlanc), about the true nature of the mission, he enters Pod 4 and is confronted by a frightening maelstrom.

Meanwhile, back at Mission Control, Commander Goss holds a press conference, ostensibly to explain the abrupt removal of Ajay and Rollie from the Antares. Skeptical British reporter Trevor Williams (Peter Howitt) is determined to discover the truth.

ABC just rolled out a shiny new promo for Defying Gravity that plays up the relationships-in-tight-quarters angle:

Silly exec spin aside, I'm digging the premise and the cast so far. Christina Cox rocked in Blood Ties, Nikki & Nora, and 3Way's show-within-a-show LadyCops. I've been a fan of Ron Livingston since Office Space and Standoff; Laura Harris was great in Women's Murder Club; and who didn't love Malik Yoba as Ice the Bounty Hunter in Arrested Development? (He was also good in Why Did I Get Married?)

When we first reported on this series in a January edition of Ask AfterEllen.com, Christina gave us this description of her character:

I'm playing Jen, the mission biologist, on a long (5+yrs) multi-stop interplanetary research trip. There are 8 astronauts, 4 men and 4 women selected for the mission. The show will follow us from the selection process all the way through our journey in space, the struggles, friendships, relationships etc. There is also the mission control team in constant contact with us, monitoring us from earth.

So, each episode will tell each of the characters story both through the present (the ship) and via their past experiences leading up to the launch and what might happen when you put 8 people in deep space for 6 yrs.

Christina's character is straight, and so are all the rest of the characters as far as I can tell. But six years alone in a small space, a few late nights, a few drinking games in a gravity-free environment — I'm thinking anything could happen, right?

Are you planning to watch?

    Abso-frakking-lutely!

This is a trifecta for me Sarah!

    1. Christina Cox,
    2. Space
    3. Made in Canada!!

Even if this one sucks (which sounds unlikely acutally) I'll be in for the long haul just cos there are about as many intergalactic shows out there as decent lesbian storylines! :)

(BTW - I too swooned over Kate Capshaw in Space Camp. Now I that I own the DVD I can watch Andie yell at Kathryn any day of the week :)

    Thanks for the update...

    Ehh

I just can not watch this show because the premise resembles too much that of Virtuality for me. Only without Clea Duvall and with less of a science-fiction focus - if more "female-friendly" is any indication. I just get the feeling it'll somehow become Desperate Housewives in space. I'm not even going to tune in.
    TheWeyrd1's picture

    Yeah...what I was thinking!

I hate that when different TV channels copy each other so dang closely like that.  It's like there's no way both shows will make it and even if Virtuality was first to air in the US, it doesn't mean it will last now...  But I might check out Christina Cox anyway...ya know for research purposes...
    Lucas's picture

    Well...

Actually, Defying Gravity is co-produced by FOX. Which may or may not explain why Virtuality isn't getting it's season. Of course, I'm still holding out hopes that it'll get a last minute : "oh-it's-actually-a-good-show-and-we're-retards" pick-up.
    royaroo's picture

    Don't hold your hopes out

Don't hold your hopes out too much; Virtuality was just that one shot deal, it's not coming back.

    I knew I wasn't the only

I knew I wasn't the only one immediately spotting the similarity between these two shows.

where did you hear Virtuality is dead? shame. I would have liked seeing Clea Duvall on a weekly basis :P

If it's got Christina, I'll watch it ;)

I found it odd that she wasn't mentioned in the CTV summary thing....

    I'll pass. Really you lost

I'll pass. Really you lost me at,"'Grey's Anatomy' in space".
    Natazzz's picture

    Well

I heart shows like Grey's anatomy and I heart space shows. I don't need Grey's anatomy in space, that's just stupid.

I might give it a try, but it sounds like it's no BSG...

    ummm....

    YES!

Looking forward to it as long as they balance the 'soap' with the 'sci-fi' without resorting to making it Desperate Housewives I shall stick with it too.

    username_taken's picture

    Definitely

I love space and I love Grey's Anatomy, so this show is definitely something I'll be checking out.

Also: Kate Capshaw's character from SpaceCamp? I was more of a Lea Thompson fan myself. ;-)

    Mixed Bag

It's got Laura Harris and it's sci-fi; Christina Cox is icing on the cake.  However, "Grey's in Space" sounds like those nasty, bitter sprinkles.  We'll see whether I can pick them off and enjoy (whatever) good stuff is left.
    mPod's picture

    Um.

If Daisy Adair is there, so am I.
    ndgogrl21's picture

    Laura Harris plus

Clea DuVall would have been a total WIN! Virtuality, unless it gets picked up by SyFy, will be a NO GO. I think the execs says 'Grey's in Space' because they wanted it to focus on the relationships of the characters and not their tasks on the ship. Who knows though?

Since Christina is not sporting the short hair, I'm going to pass as well.

    It sounds interesting

Woot! Mention 'Canadian' and I'd want to support it. :D

    The given description sounds

The given description sounds like the new show "Virtuality" that comes on Fox. I downloaded and watched, so I'm not sure, but I think it comes on on Fox. This show is really good, you all should check it out. But as for this "Defying Gravity", I probably won't watch it, don't know, I might give it a chance.

Ugh I think I saw Cox kiss

Ugh I think I saw Cox kiss 3 out of the 4 guys in that one short promo.

Maybe I won't watch this one after all... :P hehehe

Plus I can't imagine it having that biggest special effect budget..

    Ewwwwww!

I just noticed that.I think it might have ruined the whole show for me...... >_<

    When I see the words

When I see the words 'Defying Gravity' and then discover that Idina Menzel isn't involved in any capacity, it breaks my heart a little.

Also, this jackass guy must be seriously stupid to have made that comment about the women who, presumably, they are hoping will be their core audience. How will we ever figure out the mind-boggling technology required to actually switch on that flashing box in the corner in order to tune in?!

Anyhew! I will probably watch it and probably get sucked right in :/ As long as there is maximum kissing and minimum science because I get enough of that nonsense with, oh I don't know, my degree!

As soon as I saw the title

As soon as I saw the title I was like "IDINA!" then got a bit disapointed when I realised it had nothing to do with Wicked :( bad times! eh, seeing it again in London on tuesday, this should help bi-pass the disapointment XD

London is THE BEST place to see Wicked, imo ;)

    Wicked

Glad to know that I wasn't the only one to immediately think 'Wicked' when I saw the title.  Seems like a really bad title choice, IMHO.
    Mara's picture

It probably won't defy my gravity

Despite the facts that it's made in Canada and it has Christina Cox, you kinda lost me at "Grey's Anatomy in space". The "a sci-fi premise but told in a female-friendly way" is where I switched off completely.

I need more persuasion that that ;)

    _ _ _ _ _

    No

I'd rather boil my brain than watch this half-baked crap. In fact if I watched it I would venture that my brain would feel like it had been boiled. This isn't sci-fi it's just lame soapy drama in a plastic box. Do tv exec really think women wan to see the dreg? It's no Babylon 5 for sure. Also who care about women being in leadership roles on these shows, surely the quality of the programme is more important.
    sidian3's picture

    I saw this movie

I saw this  movie, it's called Sunshine. I'm sure they did a good job and I will most likely catch the show online.
    royaroo's picture

    I've seen the pilot. I'm a FAN!!!

I saw most of the pilot last week and I can NOT wait until it airs. The show was great... and I'm told that the Pilot isn't even among the best episodes of the series.

As for the whole "Grey's in Space" angle, it seems to me to be mostly because it's more soap-ish than typical Sci-Fi space dramas; it focuses much more on the layering of relationships among a larger cast.

I highly recommend this show. I know I'll be programming it into my dvr as soon as it's available.

    Nancylee's picture

Buy the show, not the network log-line

Okay, here's the insider's scoop.  They (the networks) make us come up with that crap it's like "Grey's Anatomy in Space."  It's "Desperate Housewives who rob banks on a desert island."  I'm not kidding.  If they don't know how to "sell it" or "program it" they don't know what to do with it.

So how about this... Support the genres you love.  Support the actors and writers you want to see more of.  Understand that the first draft of the script is always the writer's favorite version, before the network touches it.  Help give the show some legs (meaning audience numbers) and then we'll get to write what you want to see.  But if you don't show up, we will NEVER get to move forward.

And then if its still not your cup of tea or in my case glass of bourbon, watch something else.  Read a book.  Go to a movie or a play (Wicked!!).  Don't hate, masturbate... oh, wait, that's a different blog.

I'm on board, because one of my best girlfriends has a series on network TV.  And that's the lottery in this business.  I don't care what it is.  I'M IN!

    Count me in too

You're right. It's a vicious circle. I mean, you write what the networks will show. They show it and you get an audience. Does the audience really want to watch this or do they really want to watch something different? How do we know? And, more to the point, how do we convince the networks that the re-purposing of ostensibly the same show in slightly different guises isn't going to increase audience numbers? If you have high ratings then changing the writing becomes harder - people watch it and so there's a lack of enthusiasm to mess with a "winning formula". Whilst audiences continue to watch crap, the execs will continue to believe that's what they like.

Still I'll have to wait until the show comes to the UK but, for me, anything with Christina in it is worth waiting for - no matter what length her hair.

So until it hits these shores, I guess I'm just gonna have to stick with the movies, the plays (A Man For All Seasons 27 August - hmm, wicked might be appropriate!) and watching Blood Ties on my ipod.

    Not Making Assumptions

I totally agree that the unfortunate comments made by whomever made them are more than a little off putting to the "female audience"- but how many times have i tried to say something savvy and inclusive and ended up with my foot firmly in my mouth? Many, many times. So, whatevs, its a dumb comment.

That being said, it occurs to me that Christina Cox, Laura harris and Ron Livingston don't seem like people who would rush out and sign on to do something awful or cheesy. They seem pretty discerning as far I can tell by their choices historically. So I'm going to tune in- I love sci fi and I loves me some Christina Cox. (and have you seen Paula Garces? The delish latina on the show? Ay caramba)

Seems also that Virtuality was a totally different show with a different agenda and its own story to tell- I'm ok with 2 good new sci fi shows. That's why I have tivo.

    muddygirl's picture

    Actually...re virtuality v gravity

Virtuality was produced by Universal Media Studios and aired on Fox the network, which is different than Fox Television Studios...confusing ya? Defying Gravity was produced by Fox Television Studios and will be airing by the network ABC...(improper use of italics I'm sure but ya dig?)

So the long and short- Virtuality's success has nothing whatsoever to do with Defying Gravity, the two shows are made and distributed by totally different entities....
