Ellen DeGeneres interviews Portia de Rossi, who "also happens to be my wife"On The Ellen DeGeneres Show today, millions watched Ellen DeGeneres's much-touted interview with Portia de Rossi, star of the new ABC comedy Better Off Ted and the woman who "also happens to be my wife," as Ellen introduced her. Ellen made Portia take off her shoes to show they were the same height ("That's the main reason I had you on the show, actually"), then announced it was their seven-month wedding anniversary and quizzed Portia on what it was like being married to her. Portia told stories about how no one knows who she is when they travel, because Ellen is so famous. Then they talked about Better Off Ted, with Ellen making a funny point about Portia being drawn to play icy, insensitive characters, and Portia explaining she enjoys those roles because in real life she cares too much about what people think. The whole interview was charming, a little awkward, and very subversive because of the ways in which it normalized a lesbian relationship. Watch the interview here: After the interview, they challenged a straight couple from the audience in a round of the classic Newlywed Game, which compares Ellen and Portia's answers on questions like "If Ellen was reincarnated as a dog, what kind of dog would it be?" and "How old was Portia when she had her first kiss?" See how well they fared here: Having the heterosexuals-only dating site eHarmony.com sponsor the Newlywed Game was a little odd, given how publicly homophobic their founder is. I can't seem to find any evidence of them having sponsored segments on the show before (regular Ellen watchers, let me know if I missed one), so maybe this is their way of trying to make amends with the LGBT community? Or they just don't care that the game included a same-sex couple, because at the end of the day, business is business and Ellen's audience is exactly the kind of demographic eHarmony wants to get in front of. UPDATE: For what it's worth, a queer employee of eHarmony just contacted me to explain that the site is integrating gay and lesbian dating into its new site, compatiblepartners.net, launching on March 31st, and that it's only technical/logistical issues that are preventing them from including this option in the eHarmony site moving forward. According to the source, the company has received a lot of angry calls and emails from conservatives because of their plans to include LGBT dating in the new site, but the company is defending their decision, and that has made the company's many gay and lesbian employees both relieved and hopeful about the direction of the company. The politics of advertising aside, I personally found the game segment to be more entertaining than the interview, and even more subversive because it put Ellen and Portia on equal footing with a heterosexual couple — literally and figuratively. Singing "I've Got You, Babe" together in the faux-bathroom at the end of the episode was cute, too. The whole episode was another one of those quietly revolutionary moments. You just have to read all the gushing tweets about the interview from people across America to see how many people, gay and straight, were charmed by their appearance on the show together today. For many straight people, Ellen and Portia are the only same-sex couple they know, and that's why this episode, and Friday's "rehearsal" episode, will arguably do more for improving the visibility of same-sex marriage than all the Prop. 8 PSAs put together. Not that PSAs, marches, and gay rights campaigns aren't important, but people absorb messages differently (and arguably more easily) when they're packaged as entertainment vs. education — and that's why lesbian/bi visibility in entertainment matters. Bravo!
I watched this on my television earlier, and I must say when Portia came on stage you can see Ellen's eyes glow. It was quite adorable. Also, I believe the newly wed game was Ellen trying to show the audience how gay couples are just as normal as straight. Either way this episode was quite revolutionary. Not only do we see a gay couple acting like a...couple, but straight audiences get to finally see a happy couple that just so happens to be gay. I love Ellen, and I don't believe she sacrifices her sexuality for fame. Quite the contrary. I believe she gives her audience enough to show them how normal homosexuality can be.
!!!!
They were so adorable together. Goodness. Their eyes do light up when they talk to each other, look at each other, speak about each other!
This was subversive. And absolutely fantastic. And I loved the awkwardness. It was real.
Cutest. Lesbian. Couple. Ever.
I was one of the ones who wrote tweets about them, but they simply disappeared - as much as I've gotten to love Twitter, today I really don't.
I loved the interview, I loved the game, I loved them singing in the bathroom, what a cute couple and what a great and - I completely agree with you - subversive episode. How can anyone who has seen this ever think again that gay couples don't have a right to be married?
But as much as I loved what was on the actual show, my favourite clip of the day actually was the web-exclusive video of Ellen and Portia playing Aw Snap!
I couldn't stop laughing, those two were so hilarious.

So CUTE!
They are the cutest couple!
I loved their interview; their eyes light up when they look at each other and talk to each other, and they have great chemistry (which we also saw in the Newlywed Game).
This was also a huge step towards normalizing homosexuality to the American public. The fact that they were so cute and charming and so unpolitical is going to make a lot of straight people think more positively about same-sex marriage... which we would really use.
Subversive
is the word of the day isn't it?
Yes
Indeed, and I'm not entirely sure how appropriate it is. Subversive is, personally, quite pejorative. Something that a hack like Bill O'Reilly would use to denounce this (admittedly adorable) thing.
Portia de Rossi is so hott!
Portia de Rossi is so hott! Also, Ellen and Portia are so cute together on this show. I loved this interview so much. This will definitely help with visibility in terms of prop 8 and other proposals that take away LGBT rights.
best visibility we can ask
best visibility we can ask for. they are such a cute couple <3

How could anybody want to divorce them after watching these?
Thank you!
Thanks for the links...I certainly was hoping the full bathroom duet would be online.
Wow, they are so adorable together.
And I just want to add...who in the frack doesn't know Portia?
Dayum, after I saw Sirens for the first time, I knew who she was!
Loved it!!!
I thought it was brilliant!!!! Even my gf who is never easily impressed was shocked by the show (in a positive way)!!!!
It's so amazing to think how many of us have helped our straight friends and family go through this process of seeing a real lesbian in a real relationship behave like oh the way we would in real life, but so many people have no reason to encounter it, so Ellen and Portia just gave them all a big welcome to my family sort of here it is.... I'm really so amazed and thankful to Ellen for making history once again, and to Portia too for being courageous enough to join in the history making (especially considering she "always cares so much about what other's think/feel").... she seems a bit more shy and sensitive than i thought (really endearing actually)
Woah
It's amazing to see all those tweets about them.
Those two are so adorable. The show was pretty normal and in this sense, normal is good. I'm happy that more people can see that gay couples are as loving and 'normal' as other couples.
Great episode!
I've been looking forward to this episode since Ellen first revealed Portia would be on the show nearly a month ago. It was very cute and it did not disappoint! I really loved the Newlywed Game -- But totally missed the eHaromony sponsorship. Not sure how I feel about that. Loved it when they 'won' the pots and pans.

Thanks for showing those clips. I'm so glad Ellen is so open in making people feel comfortable. I'm so happy that she's happy and a wonderful and stunning womyn like Portia walked into her life. I can certainley feel their love for each other. I'm glad that the world saw how in love they are. Those moments were empowering and that in itself is activism.
Thanks, Sarah.
They are so adorable together!
I'm so happy about them!
So real, human and ...amazing!
They really made me feel so optimistic about my own future and my own relationship!
My Pussy-Wagon died on me!
cute!
good stuff
I watched it with my mom :) When I told her Ellen's wife was going to be on there today she got all excited. After the show, she talked to me about how she never watches Oprah anymore and "just love"s Ellen because "she's so silly and cute". I love my mom. She's so adorable.
-We do not stop playing because we've become old. We become old because we've stopped playing.
Thanks for the extended clips
And she does the splits too!
I thought that
I thought that the "rehearsal" was more entertaining that the actual interview, which was a little awkward, but still very cute and I loved when Ellen took off Portia's shoe for her. I think that it's true and Ellen and Portia are one of, if not the only, lesbian couple that straight people know, and admire.
All in all, I really appreciate Ellen for the visibility that she gives our community, from casually addressing Portia as her wife, to speaking out openly against prop 8. On top of that, she's absolutely hysterical and I love her show. So thank you Ellen :)
puppies, rainbows, daises and
Ellen and Portia :) How cute!
Obviously, the public and the fam adore Ellen, but it was so nice to see how great Portia is and how well they play off each other.
Definitely a step in the right direction! It was a great show!
I've been waiting for this
I've been waiting for this show for what seems like forever. I loved every second although I got mad when Portia said no one ever gets excited to see her. I was like WHAT?! I'd kill to meet Portia!
Anyways, I love the two of them and thought today's show was the best! Maybe since it pulled so many viewers Ellen will bring the wifey on once a year!
Great review
They're cute together and
awww love it :)

loved it
so cute!
Super cute!
"The whole episode was another one of those quietly revolutionary moments."
My thoughts exactly. This is a huuuge step forward - for this to seem so normal when only ten years ago Ellen was still in the closet... it just gives me so much hope for where we'll be in ten years time. :D
Interview was adorable, btw. I have to admit that I actually cried when they started singing together - it was so sweet.
Yeah, I'm a softie.
Beautiful
yes!
best episode, hands down..
=)
aww...
they're so sweet and cute together. i feel like crying when they sang together...i'm still a bit woozy from the dance routine though. god it's amazing how Portia can turn into one hot scary woman! why doesn't anybody recognize Portia?? if i get to meet Ellen i'd look for Portia :D
thank you Ellen! i hope when this episode airs in our country my family will get to watch. Now imma go look for that song...
It's so sad that Portia got
It's so sad that Portia got rid of her Australian accent! She sounds great when she speaks with it!
I understand changing your accent for a movie or show, but I don't understand why she speaks with an American accent in real life as well. v_v
"You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!"
Aw come on nah!
Its pretty thick still considering she has to speak with an American accent everyday at work and is surrounded by it all the time. She rolls her r's a bit more than an Aussie generally does but she is still very obviously a Victorian. As a Queenslander, I can pick a Vic a mile away and she still rings pretty spot on to me.
It's so obvious how happy they make each other. I think their ease with one another and their natural affection as a couple is wonderful. I hope they make more public appearances together like this.
The only thing that seemed odd about the whole show was how relaxed and connected Ellen and Portia seemed with one another in stark contrast to the hetero couple who looked hyped up on caffeine or something and totally ill at ease around one another like it was a first date. Had they not met before the show?
It was so nice for the lesbians not to come off as the odd ones on a tv show. On the whole, Rachel Maddow, Ellen and Portia are giving me hope that healthy, happy, well-adjusted lesbians and television are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
"What the frickin frack?!"
So cute!!
They are so awesome together...i just wanna give them a big squishy hug!...lol
"I know you're lonely. I think you need someone to want you. Well, I do want you. So be brave, and want me back."
is it just me or does
is it just me or does anyone else find it stange they never kiss not even on the cheek
Ellen & Portia kiss
Do you mean in this instance or ever? Becuase they kiss at awards shows. I would guess they intentionally chose not to kiss on Ellen's show..
From what I'm hearing around me (cnservative community), a lot of straight Ellen fans think she went too far (meaning it made them uncomfortable) with the loving looks and Ellen taking Portia's shoe off and them singing "I Got You Babe" and the "audacity" of them playing The Newlywed Game. They love her as long as they don't have to think about the fact that she's gay.
Reaching out
That was lovely!
Eep!
They are sooo cuteeee! :)
They make me happy!
Tutto Succede Per Una Ragione
Very True
I couldn't agree more with your statements, Sarah. I live in a fairly conservative family that I haven't come out to yet. I may be bisexual, but I lean far more to the lesbian side of the spectrum, and I'm not sure how my family will take that news. I DVR'ed the interview between Portia and Ellen and then showed it to my mom and sister. They both expressed how happy they were that Portia and Ellen had found each other and didn't have any negative comments about the segment. It made me so happy, and very hopeful that when I do eventually come out, they'll be accepting. Not only did this show help to normalize homosexual relationships to society at large, but it also helped me take one step closer to coming out. It may have just been one episode on Ellen's talk show, but its ramifications were huge. 'Subversive' is right.
"Bon anniversaire et donne moi le salle de bains. Which translates as 'happy birthday and hand me....the bathroom.'"
Ace!
Portia, you are absolutely ACE in my book. Portia and Ellen together? Game, set and match :)
Compassion. A great gift. Never lose it.
side note
thank you for posting
Thanks for posting this I was looking forward to see it, especially after the funny preparations :)) It was the first thing I checkd this morning and here it is, thanks!!!
They are just too cute!
