Bada bing! Cashmere Mafia's lesbian story lineNow that ABC has officially picked up Cashmere Mafia — a drama series about four successful 30-something friends climbing the ladder in their respective careers, starring Lucy Liu, Miranda Otto, Frances O'Connor and Bonnie Somerville — we're finally going to get at least one lesbian/bi character on network TV next season. And I have the lowdown for you! First, a disclaimer: this info is based on the initial casting calls for the pilot. Pilots often undergo re-writes, re-shoots and other changes along the way to airing on your television set, so it's very likely that some details will change — names, dialogue, plot points. Whole story lines can be dropped, even, although usually only the minor ones, unless the pilot is completely re-done. It's not very likely that the lesbian/bi character would suddenly become straight, for example. But Lucy Liu's character Dylan was originally described in the casting sides as having "blonde good looks." Obviously, that didn't happen. So what follows is just how the pilot started out — where it ended up, we'll have to wait to find out. But it will at least give you an idea of the basic characters involved, the sensibility of the show and what kind of tone the writers are aiming for. Now, on to the details! Caitlin (Bonnie Somerville) is a cosmetics industry VP in her late 30s described in the initial scripts as "a Boston Irish working girl transformed into a saucily attractive Jil Sander suit." This is what she looks like:
In the pilot, Caitlin finds herself inexplicably attracted to a woman she hires named Alicia, who is described as "37, British, with a striking physical beauty made all the more appealing by a disarmingly scattered, un-self-conscious air. Men want to be with her, women want to be like her." (No word yet on who has been cast in this role.) Caitlin finds herself flustered and nervous whenever she's around Alicia, from the very first time she interviews her, and working with her becomes increasingly difficult. Caitlin eventually brings it up with her three best friends over lunch, telling them, "It's like someone waved a wand and the sun came out and my libido made a surprise guest appearance, and I wanted to book a week in Paris right then and there." But Caitlin can't quite bring herself to tell her friends she's talking about a woman, so she lets them assume she has a crush on a male co-worker. Finally, Caitlin asks Alicia to have dinner after work one night. The scene below is what follows: [begin script excerpt] EXT. TOWN BAR AND RESTAURANT--NIGHT Music continues, over and under. Caitlin and Alicia walk out together, lit up with drinks and laughing. Caitlin's Jaguar is waiting at the curb.
A shy, charged shuffle; Caitlin takes her gently by the elbows and brushes a kiss to both cheeks.
But as she steps back, Alicia catchers her eye with a challenging, mischievous, unmistakably erotic look and Caitlin's breath catches-- --and Alicia steps up and kisses her full on the mouth. And they melt together in a shyly passionate little shuffle right there on the sidewalk-- --as Cilla Grey [an adversary] passes by on her way in, recognizing Caitlin with a look of surprise, quickly turning away and disappearing inside, unnoticed by Caitlin. The kiss ends.
Alicia silences her with another kiss.
And with a last peck, she runs off towards the avenue, hailing a cab. Caitlin leans against the wall, closing her eyes, thrilled and scared all at once. [end script excerpt] What happens next remains to be seen. Will Alicia and Caitlin work out? Will the friends' arch-enemy Cilla use what she saw to blackmail Caitlin? Will Caitlin watch re-runs of Work Out on Bravo and realize how stupid it is to sleep with your employee? Stay tuned! Here are some more photos of the Cashmere Mafia women to tide you over:

recap?
i hope the story between Caitlin and Alicia lasts more than a few episodes and this isnt just a tease! will there be witty, insightful, better-than-the-actual-show recaps???
oh thank you thank you thank you
This is going to be hot
two australians in the cast!
I have had a crush on Frances O'Connor since 1996 when she appeared in "Halifax" and then she went on to play a lesbian in "Love and Other Catastrophes" and i watched it everday for about a month.
Now look at her go!!
i love francis o
Je Adore
Lucy! I can't wait till this hits the screens, be it in Australia or elsewhere. If all else fails, I'm sure there's going to be recaps, until it proves to be another waste of time, which we're all hoping it doesn't!
And it would be fantastic if the Lesbian Storyline remained. Yet I find myself asking, is it coming out during sweeps? Because if that's the case... I'm not holding my breath...
sounds good
Miranda Otto...
*swoons*
It's great to have the news on this - thanks, Sarah!
excited
I'm excited about this; It sounds like it has so much potential.
Even if the storyline doesn't last, I hope it's handled well and ended properly (though of course I rather Caitlin keep going for women).

And simply put:
empowered women = me watching
Revelation
I am looking forward to this
hey imthey
i have both of those movies on DVD! They have been available in Australia for quite awhile, you should order them online!
Sex and The City Part Deux
It's so obvious what Darren Star is trying to do but to spice things up he added Lucy Lui. Do what works.
I'm so excited about this show just from the pic. Why? Because I'll be able to pick apart every single fashion decision.
From left right: Skinny jeans and Louboutins are NOT the casual uniform. Please cease and desist. Her bag. I want.
Why is Lucy Lui wearing leg warmers on her arms? Her coat. I want.
I actually can't say too much about the red head. It works for her.
It's clear to me Homegirl on the far right is going to be the Miranda/Cynthia of this show fashion-wise. Miranda didn't catch a break with her wardrobe until the last season. Compared to the other girls, she looks plain and boring.
I feel like a Queen at Pride. Oh..and the lesbian storyline's cool too. The real determinant of this storyline will depend on whether she's the star. A characters are rarely gay on primetime. If she's a B character then yes it might last 6 episodes.
Not Holding My Breath
First off Sarah - Thanks for keeping an eye out for us all who are wanting to watch more of interest to us - Kudos to you, you've always done great in this department - Many Thanks.
I'm certainly not holding my breath on this one. It would be really nice if this develops into something nice; however I am very skeptical about networks using lesbians and bisexuals to get ratings. If they're going to do this, then at least make it good.
Secondly, it looks and sounds very much like a substitue for Sex and the City. In as much as a love Sex and the City - I hate it whenever shoes try to follow-suit - that's a big turn off for me.
On the other hand - the kiss scene sounds wonderful and in addition - I absolutley love Lucy Lui and will give it a go because she's in it.
What Does...
Fashion have to do with anything? Like that's the most important aspect? I think not. What matters is the show itself, not the clothing. And don't come at me with 'Sex & The City would have been nothing without the fashion!' because that's bollocks. It would have been nothing without the sex!
And hey, along with my fingerless gloves (HIYA LESKIDD!) those leg warmers on my arms are keeping me warm!
Peace out!
yay
all im gonna say is this
im gonna start watching ABC
It's Not 1984
So let's stop with the Flashdance/Love Is A Battlefield Leg warmers on our arms and get gloves. Very few people can pull that off.
I am one of those girls that devour Vogue, Bazarre, Elle, etc. because I love clothes. So yes.. That's what I'm excited about. I also love almost everything Darren Star has touched. Because he loves fashion, clothes. This show is going to feature 4 high powered, upper class, business women in NEW YORK with presumably different personalities. There is no way this show will be interesting to me -considering the above premise - without fashion/wadrobe being heavily featured. Wardrobe is one the easiest ways to accentuate each characters personality and tastes. I guarantee there will be a percentage of watchers who'll see the above pics and think I might check this show out to see what else they're going to wear.
Admittedly fashion can only get a show so far, but it can enhance the viewing experience.
The scrpt the cast and the wardrobe...
I totally agree, part of the reason I liked Sex and the city was to see them roll out the new dior lines and prada shoes. I'd expect an industry exec who wants to get the promotion to dress not only well, but with flare. They've got to look the part, that being said, they have to be able to act the part as well.
This looks like it could be
This looks like it could be great.
Lets hope it will be a show about strong, independant women. And lets also hope that 2 of them just happen to have a productive, lasting (i mean more than 3 'scandalous' episodes) relationship!
If so, it will be another televisual reason i wish i lived in America. Or at least had cable TV so i could watch all teh imports.
I feel that this might just be another show i will have to scour the internet to watch.
Or read recaps....if AE will offer them =D
~I've been watching your world from afar, I've been trying to be where you are, I've been secretly falling apart...~
Perhaps it's just me...
I never could understand the latest fashion trends, but I'm sorry, I find nearly everything they're wearing unappealing. Aside from the redhead, none of it really works. The one next to her is ok, but kind of on the plain side.
Side note, I hope it's a good show; all the shows I've been watching lately are slowly becoming that of a train wreck; so horrible, yet so hard to look away...

OMG. She's fallen in love with LENA HEADEY! No wonder. That woman must have a thousand toasters by now :P
Lena Headey as Alicia
Superb!
Great ideas, both of them!
Hopefully we'll ever see Cashmere Mafia on DVD at least. I have given hope - by now - that we ever get half the films discussed here in German cinemas let alone on tv.
Pretty awesome that Lucy Liu was casted and not some "blonde good looks". :-))
"I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, Sir," said Alice, "because I'm not myself, you see."
("Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll)
clothes are fun but...
um,
okay, next winter..i'm
okay, next winter..i'm getting a three quarter length sleeved coat and some long gloves...the clothes and shoes are FABULOUS!
