"Buffy" comic #22: Kennedy and Satsu bond over falling for straight womenI just got the latest issue in the Buffy Season 8 comic book series in the mail (#22 "Swell"), which features lesbian slayers Kennedy and Satsu on the cover, looking like this:
Before I give my thoughts on this issue, here's a rundown of what happened. (If you've already read the issue, you can skip to my review at the bottom.) WHAT HAPPENED
When Satsu tries to protest that it was more than just a fling, Kennedy tells her to get over it already: "Lose the cinnamon lippy gloss you laid on her and try kissing someone how can give you their heart. Not just their body."
What they find in the bag are Vampy Cats — stuffed animals manufactured supposedly to capitalize on Harmony's recent rise to fame via her own MTV reality show glamorizing the vampire lifestyle (in a brilliant parody of MTV's recent development of bad reality shows like A Double Shot at Love).
In the end, the Slayers defeat the Swarm (who were sent by the current Big Bad known as Twilight); Kennedy tells Satsu "your eval's SO getting a smiley face;" and Buffy announces that it's time for the Slayers to adopt a much lower profile, because, thanks to Harmony's media smear campaign, "we're hated and feared more than the bloodsucking undead" so "we need to stop being whatever we've been and focus." The issue ends with Satsu indicating she's finally over Buffy by telling Kennedy she's ready to go shopping for a new flavor of lip gloss. MY REVIEW Given the lack of visibility for lesbians in other entertainment mediums these days, it was great to have an entire issue of one of the most popular comic book series revolve around two lesbian characters (lesbians of color, no less!), and it was nice to learn more about two of the series' less-developed characters. The conversation between Kennedy and Satsu about Buffy will probably strike some readers as too heavy handed — as a way for the writers to drive home the point that Buffy's straight — but I don't think that's their intention. I think the writers are just using this conversation as a common point of interest between Kennedy and Satsu — as an excuse to bring them together in a somewhat organic way and to show some development in Satsu's character. But I'm still undecided about the effectiveness of making the Swarm so cartoon-ishly sexist and homophobic. I generally don't have any complaints about making a correlation between sexism, homophobia, and evil, but the way this was executed just seems so, well, clunky. On the other hand, an episode about stuffed animals trying to destroy the world is pretty cartoon-ish and campy to begin with, and the storyline also shows Slayers flying helicopters and commandeering a Korean submarine, so there's a lot of stuff that doesn't totally make sense in this issue. But these kind of inconsistencies/plot contrivances — how did the Slayers suddenly learn how to operate sophisticated military weapons? — will probably bug some readers more than they do me. I'm kinda willing to believe almost anything is possible in the Buffyverse. I don't really care about minor inconsistencies as long as the stories are entertaining, at least somewhat believable, and include lines like this one from Xander: Big Buts come with the Slayer territory these days and I probably should have reviewed that sentence before unleashing it on the sensitive womenfolk. So that's my take on the issue — what's yours? Submitted by on February 10, 2009 - 11:00am. |

It turns out the Vampy Cats are evil, and designed to wipe out the Slayers — starting with Satsu, who unwittingly ingests a Vampy Cat and starts behaving oddly. First she dons a traditional Japanese kimono, explaining "My parents bought it for me. Before I destroyed them with my gayness." Then she makes conservative homophobic statements, like, "Girls should kiss boys and have their babies" and criticizes the Slayers as "a bunch of self-righteous little ovaries!" And finally, she gets into a physical altercation with Kennedy (never a good idea), taunting her with "That the best you got, girl licker?" before she is finally purged of the Vampy Cat doll and comes to her lesbian senses.

Buffy comic
The Cover
The Cover looks very cool.
I haven't actually read any of the Buffy comics but I'm a Buffy fan. I think it was pretty realistic the talk between Kennedy and Satsu. Sometimes you need to mention the word 'straight' to a girl a number of times before she realises there's no chance!
As for Harmony having her own show on MTV, awesome, and vampire cat dolls! lol I'd buy one.
And who knows, maybe some of the potential slayers where training in the army before the got their slayer power, hense the excellent submarrine and helicopter navigation :P
Kennedy
Kennedy really looks like Kennedy,im impressed at that. I might even buy this one.

the vampire slayers
i love buffy, and i love comics, but i will admit it was hard to get used to the change in pacing. there is not usually a 1 show=1 comic ratio and i felt like i was watching 10 minutes of the show before a month-long commercial break. but now that i'm a little more used to it, i do like it.
i've never been a big fan of having 1000's of slayers (or of kennedy for that matter) and feel that the comic should be called "The Vampire Slayers" since it's not really about buffy but about all the current slayers. but with folks like joss whedon and jane espenson writing, and those gorgeous covers by jo chen, it's usually an enjoyable read anyway.
p.s. buffy and satsu technically had a two-night-stand. :)
It has to be one of the
It has to be one of the nicest covers so far in the series, that's for sure.
I'm also becoming even more of a fan of Satsu. I like her feistiness and charm. I hope she's gonna stick around a while, and maybe - if we're ever lucky enough to get a Buffy film - she'll be given to us in actual real life form. I'm picking the chick who plays Sierra in Dollhouse as my Satsu choice. Bit of hair dye and Bob's your uncle.
Anyways, the issue to me did feel like it was driving home the 'Buffy is straight' agenda over and over. Like it was catering to all those people on Buffy forums across the net that had pathetic little heart attacks over the fact Buffy slept with a girl. I mean, seriously, some of the things people have said about it makes me wonder if they've ever left the little basement they must live in. Yes, we know Buffy is not a raving girl-licker, but there's no need to freak out about it, or repeat over and over the fact she's straight...with a capital Hetero. We get it. We also get that they don't want Faith to be gay too. "Crush all our dreams why don't you."
But, I did like the fact we had Kennedy and Satsu kinda bonding - I like both characters. And slayers with a submarine...can only be a good thing :D

You know, it's nice to know
You know, it's nice to know that even fictional insanely hot cartoon women do the utterly stupid thing of falling for a straight woman.
It totally blows, so I know precisely what Satsu is going through *sigh*
I mean, they're kinda pounding in the whole "Buffy is straight! Straight did you hear me!!! STRAIGHT!!" line a tad strongly, which always rubs me the wrong way. Not that it isn't totally plausible that a straight woman would have a fling with a queer chick (I wish), and then go back to banging the penis none-the-changed. But it just reeks a tad of reassuring the straight teenage fanboys out there that there drool-fest is not denied to them.
Anyway, I initially was getting the episodes when these comics came out with Whedon writing, but I kinda lost sequence. Think I might have to wait till a graphic novel collection comes out.

Spoilery...maybe.
Is there such a thing as "too well-rounded"? Because that's what I kind of picked up on with this one. The whole lip gloss symbolism thing kind of got predictable after the third reference. I think it could've stood to be a bit more literal.
Then again, I've never seen an actual episode of BtVS, so maybe this is just how things worked on the show, too.
Even though I wish it had played out more organically, I'm a fan of Satsu and Kennedy bonding, When I initially read the summary for #22 online a month a go, my initial reaction was something along the lines of, "Oh, God. Kennedy's about to cheat on Willow."
Oh, and call me daft, but what was up with the reflection of Renee in Satsu's sword? Is she still alive, or is this some sort of memorium thing?

Why do I like Kennedy more in the comics?
I want to read it just to find out...

More complex
I thought this was a poor issue. It seemed a way of getting out of Buffy having entered a relationship with a woman without dealing with the why. And the why is important. Buffy continued having sex with Satsu after the first night and made indications that she was sexually excited by Satsu (the response to "Ma'am"). And she seemed emotionally involved with her to a point. This whole "she's straight" end of story is not satisfying because in real life it is far more complex. Unlike many lesbians and bisexual women who during their life enter into relationships with men not due to love or attraction but because of a conflict over their sexuality (whether it be from familial, religious, or societal pressures), a woman that enters into a sexual relationship with another woman is not under pressure to do so.
Every "straight" woman I know who has slept with a woman when younger has tended towards more complex feelings than "I am straight and was just having some quick intimacy". I think Buffy is without a doubt definitely more sexually and emotionally attracted to men. I am not even saying she is at least bi. However this issue took the easy way out. It did not allow Buffy a proper closure of the relationship (the last time Satsu had been seen with Buffy they were making love - despite Buffy stating it was over). It also brought up one of the more annoying traits among some lesbians (the need to state certain women one has slept with are straight). If I listened to that I would not be with the person I have married.
I need to catch up on the
zuh?
Great comment!
An ex of mine who still refuses to say that she is anything other than straight once said to me "Just because I like sleeping with women doesn't make me gay". I was like, well it kinda does, that is pretty much the dictionary definition, but whatever you say!
I know.
I agree. I don't understand those who say they're straight yet they have sex with another woman? That isn't straight. I'm sorry. It isn't.

Sleeping with Women vs. Being Queer
Not that I really want to contradict you or the other couple commenters above me here, but I don't completely agree.
I think what makes us lesbian or bisexual is our ability to fall in love with another woman, not necessarily merely having sex with one.
I mean, if you think about it, the first inkling that we got that we were some flavour of queer was crushes and romantic stuff focused on other women. I mean, sure, we fantasised about having sex too *smile* but I think the bigger thing that actually makes us gay is falling in love.
I know straight women who have had, or have, sex with women, but still totally identify as straight. That's because, in the end, the person that they end up falling for will come packing a penis. It's just not in them to be in love with another woman, and that's why they are straight.
Now, of course, nothing is ever this simple, PARTICULARLY when it comes to emotions and love, but for me it works as a good rule of thumb.
So, in this context it does make sense for Buffy to have sex with Satsu, enjoy it, go back for more, but still be straight. She's just not going to fall for Satsu like Satsu has for Buffy. Now, I still have big issues of course with how they've handled it, as it seems like they're hitting us over the head with a rather large big stick, but the basic premise doesn't bother me that much.
Of course, I find Satsu right sexy, so maybe I'm just finding excuses to be selfish ;)

Hmmm..
Okay. I never understood the whole "straight girl" sleeping with women thing. To me I always thought "Doesn't the mere act of sleeping with a woman and enjoying it make you not exactly, by definition, straight?" I never asked for an explanation, so I guess I'm to blame for that ignorance. I suppose what you've said makes some sense to those who think that way. Okay. It really doesn't matter anyway.

Oh my god, I'm *not* the only one! :D haha.
I really didn't care for Tara, though she grew on me a little more after re-watching the dvds for about the 12th time. Kenn is much more my type, and I absolutely love her and the way she went after Willow. I looked forward to this issue ever since hearing about it back in about October, and it was a little disappointing, but I'm not gonna complain too much with that hot cover. I just really hope Willow doesn't break Kenn's heart by continuing to sleep with that creepy mermaid/snake demon lady.
Thank you!
I just wanted to say you're not the only one! I totally find the relationship between Willow and Kennedy MUCH more sexy and a better fit for Willow. I've so had to bite my tongue around Tara fans (don't get me wrong, I like Tara, just I think Kennedy and Willow are a better relationship).

I love the comics
Lesbian of color?
As with FABLES, I'm waiting for the trades before reading these so I don't get the somewhat unfulfulling feeling you can get when you follow the stories via the monthly pamphlets.
Incidentally, I waas a bit puzzled by Sarah describing Kennedy as a "lesbian of color". I have no idea what the ethnicity of the actress who played her might be, but have we ever been given any reason to think the character is anything other than caucasian? The two are not necessarily the same, after all. I mean Jessics Alba may be Hispanic, but the character she played in the Fantastic Four movies, Sue Storm, is a blonde WASP.
question
so do willow and kennedy not stay together and kennedy falls for buffy? i don't read the comics..
that sounds like such shit writing though
