"Better Off Ted" creator takes on Obama with fake commercial

The season finale of Better Off Ted scheduled to air tonight has been rescheduled to next Tuesday, May 5, because of the President's primetime address tonight — and the folks at Better Off Ted aren't taking this lying down. Creator Victor Fresco created this very funny fake Veridian Dynamics commercial in response, with the tagline, "When Presidents talk, Americans get hurt."

Watch it here:

This is the kind of marketing I can get behind! Not only is this funny on its own, it's a clever way to let existing viewers know about the schedule change, and potentially attract new viewers.

For those who haven't been watching the show (and that's a lot of you, judging by the ratings), Veridian Dynamics is the morally corrupt business at which Portia de Rossi and her employees work (tagline: "Veridian Dynamics. Making your world better. Whether you want us to or not.") The clever folks at ABC have created an official website for the fake company at VeridianDynamics.com.

Here are some fun facts about the fake organization from its official bio that will give you a pretty good sense of the corporate culture:

DID YOU KNOW...

  • Our company has 532,972 and 1/2 employees? That's right, we created half an employee as an experiment — a successful experiment!

  • Veridian plans to be a leader for future generations, which is why many of our employees are children.

  • Our blueberry toaster waffles were originally created as insulation.

  • Veridian Dynamics is at the forefront of feminist issues. Before we started dumping waste in the oceans only fifty percent of fish had female genitalia. Now it's up to eighty-five!

  • We can manufacture a car that gets 200 miles to the gallon. And we will begin production on the very next day after the world runs out of oil.

  • Over half our employees work in the legal department. So don't even think about suing us. We're looking at you, guy with no face who used that shampoo we recalled.

  • Our robot servants are programmed to not be dangerous. But that doesn't mean they aren't. Please don't taunt our robot servants.

  • Our logo is supposed to be a duck? The artist who designed it said that's how he sees a duck. He no longer works for us.

  • We invented that thing you use when you need to do stuff. No, not that thing... Yes, that one.

Very funny.

Each episode of Better Off Ted includes a fake company commercial, which brilliantly skewers all those ads you see on TV for companies that never quite explain what they do. As much as I enjoy the show (although the writing is admittedly a bit uneven), the fake commercials are even funnier.

Here's the first commercial they aired:

"Usually." Genius.

My favorite line in their commercial about diversity was this one, delivered over video of ants marching in a line:

Veridian Dynamics. Individuals — we believe everyone is special, irreplaceable, and will follow the thing walking in front of it. That's why we celebrate all individuals, even ones going nowhere.

Then they ended with the lines, "Veridian Dynamics — because you can't spell "individual" without 'Veridian.' And 'U." (pause) And an "L."

I also get a kick out of this fake corporate recruiting video in which Veronica (Portia) extols the merits of making nicotine ice cream, replacing fingers with tentacles, and being a medical test subject:

"Sorry Denmark, you know why we're mad at you." Heh. You can see more videos from the show at ABC's official Better Off Ted site.

If you're a fan of the show, keep your fingers crossed that it gets renewed (it's currently on the bubble), and let me know your favorite lines from the show in the comments!

    YES.

Both videos are AWESOME.  I love this show so much.  I can't believe the season finale is here already. Not cool. It needs to come back for more! We need to see Veronica-as-magician's-assistant!

    season finale?

that came quick. i gotta admit that portia's the best part of the show and the woman who plays linda. otherwise, it can be just a little too goofy and annoying to me.

    hmm...fav lines?

i liked when veronica tells linda "i know you're obsessed with me. that's what i like about you." and when she approached linda and told that her that she knew all about her but couldn't even say her full name.

or when she went into the daycare and asked if there were any children with curly hair (the episode where ted brings rose into work).

also liked when linda called veronica out for not washing her hands after going to the bathroom.

    LOVE. this. show.

It does have some awkward/off moments, but it's by and large the funniest new comedy. I've given Parks and Recreation a try too, but it never seems to make me actually LOL. Better Off Ted has the best one liners: "You're soft and weak... like a geisha." -- Veronica

love the show. the commercials are the best. without a doubt the highlight of each ep. I hope it gets renewed. *keeping fingers crossed*

    Better Off Ted

I really hope this show doesn't get cancelled.  Every episode has funny moments and I especially love the commericals. The tag lines are so simple yet hilarious.  It does subtle humour well too so you have to pay attention to everything.  I love Phil and Lem and Portia de Rossi is great in this.

My favourite exchange that I can think right now of was:

Phil: Linda, you can't hurt a baby!
Lem: Well, you can hurt them, they're not indestructible.
Phil: I meant it's morally indefensible.
Lem: Well, what if the baby killed a man?
Phil: You and your moral puzzles. ... I just love 'em!
Lem: So you're saying under no circumstances would you harm a baby Hitler?

And when Veronica yells at the team for trying to crash the system, she runs out of adjectives and ends with "Vertical and lactose intolerant."

You really have to watch the scenes to get the full effect. It's all in the delivery.

    That line about GE...

at the end was interesting.  I think it means a dig against NBC, which is owned by GE, and of course is ABC's network rival.

I like this show, the writing is crisp and intelligent, and the actors, especially Portia De Rossi and Jay Harrington (Ted), are very good.  Which is precisely why it will get canceled.  Nobody in America seems to be interested in anything except so-called "reality" shows like American Idol.  These days, an intellligent scripted show is doomed.

    Subversive...

This show is so subversive. In your face, rude, anti-corporate, funny, subversive! With the Big O pre-empting the show tonight, the rerun on Canadian tv was about the security scanners that couldn't recognize people of colour. A bizarre idea somehow made funny. If the show fails, it will be because the male lead (can't even remember his name!) is clearly not a star. Portia steals all her scenes and when she's not around, the two lab nerds steal the rest.

    favorite veronica lines!

It's not my fault I don't listen when you talk.

Some days, it seems like everything we do leaches toxins.

My door is always open to you. Please, close it on the way out.

And of course, my all time fave:

Here, I bought you some briefs. The boxers you were wearing didn't highlight your assets. Penis-ly speaking.

This show is insanely funny. Gotta agree the commercials are a highlight, but all the characters surrounding Ted are hysterically screwy!

    Def hope it gets renewed!

    Hilarious

I love this show and definitely missed it tonight. Veronica is certainly the highlight of the show, but I do enjoy watching the two bumbling scientists...

I can't believe that it's time for the season finale already--I hope that ABC has the good sense to pick it up.

i love this show. it's so sarcastic to me. and so wrong.

but.. it's so real at the same time. it makes me think in a different way than grey's anatomy does. i love it and it's funny at the same time. love veronica's character. woot woot

That commercial is hilarious, but so are the rest of them. I love this show so much! It's brilliant, especially Portia :) I really wish it would get another season.

    Funny show

I love the show. Anything that can make me laugh out loud is a keeper! Maybe that's why I didn't watch Obamas speech tonight, he doesn't make me laugh.

    I'm on the bubble

While I like that the show has a very unique voice and isn't afraid to be really ridiculous, I think that some of the actors have been miscast, and I don't think the attempts to humanize Ted, i.e. his crush on Linda and his relationship with his daughter, really mesh with the biting, satirical tone. But I like his daughter.

I don't think that Jay Harrington has the chops to be the leading actor in a sitcom. I may be biased because of his insufferable role as Paul on The Inside, but I don't think he has good enough comic timing. Andrea Anders also feels a bit off to me as Linda because she's too soft around the edges. I could see Lauren Graham killing in that part.

I love Veronica and Lem and Phil though. I would totally watch the Lem and Phil show.

    Some of my favorite lines:

Veronica: The company's position is that it's actually the opposite of racist because it's not targeting black people. It's just ignoring them. They insist that the worst people can call it is "indifferent."

Phil: Did you put hydrochloric acid in this mug?
Lem: Oh, yeah. I was trying to get the stains out.
Phil: You know, soap would work, and it wouldn't kill someone if they accidentally drank it.
Lem: But soap leaves a film.

Ted: I have to watch Rose.
    Veronica: I can wash Rose.
Ted: I said "watch" her, not "wash" her.
    Veronica: Hmm. Even easier.
Ted: The fact that you thought I was going to go wash Rose right now makes me think you may not know that much about children.
Veronica: I know they need to be cleaned.

Veronica: "Money before people," that's the company motto. Engraved on the lobby floor. It just looks more heroic in Latin.

I'm not sure if I want it renewed or not. I guess I don't want it canceled. I just wish it could come back with slightly different actors.

    Bringing It to the UK?

Hey, I love this show but no one has the interest to post it on youtube anymore :(

So, does anyone know if there are any plans to bring it to the UK??
    Lowell's picture

    can you watch

the videos on abc's website or no? because they are always posted on there.

    Thanks Though
    Reckless in the dark.'s picture

    I can't believe.....

that they might be cancelling this already!

I haven't seen it yet because I'm in the UK but every clip I've watched and everything I've heard about it has been hilarious. I actually laughed out loud through most of that "join the Veridian Dynamics family" clip, and I don't laugh out loud easily!

This is just like Arrested Development not getting good enough ratings even though it was hilarious and is one of my favourite shows.
I feel like maybe these shows would do a lot better if they were aired in the UK from the beginning, because I think that kind of humour is more popular in the UK. Everyone I know here who has watched Arrested Development loves it anyway, and I'm sure it would be the same with Better Off Ted.

I'll cross all my limbs and digits and everything that can be crossed that this will get more than one season!

    Great show!

I picked up this show from reading about it here, and can't get enough of it.  I'm spreading the word with my friends, too.  (Maybe if the network advertised it at all, it'd be doing better.)

    Fave lines:

     Rose:  Veronica seems friendly enough.

    Veronica:  I AM friendly enough!

    Same episode:

Rose (after Veronica hands her the Art of War):  I don't want to read this.

Veronica:  Trust me.  Your enemies are reading this.

    I like the show

I've been watching Better off ted since the first episode aired. I think its a great show and I love the new quirky things they come up with at veridian dynamics. Also, love the show bcoz Portia is amazing.....!!I want the second season.

    Question

I don't want this show to be canceled, so if I only watch this show online at abc.com, does that help ratings at all?
    Mallemuk's picture

    Help anyone - a question

Is there anyone who can clarify to me what it means in the last video (the third one (with Portia)): "Sorry Denmark, you know why we're mad. And please, stop calling". I don’t understand what it is surpassed to mean? I'm from Denmark, and I don't get it.
    Amy's picture

    i don't think it's really

i don't think it's really supposed to mean anything. or at least, it's not referencing something that denmak actually did. i think it's funny because denmark seems like the last coutry you would have a rivalry with. it wouldn't have the same effect if she'd said "sorry north korea, you know why we're mad." i may have done a terrible job of explaining that. :) but it wasn't meant as a slight to denmark.

i love this show too. i actually think the actor playing ted does a pretty decent job. he reminds me of don draper from mad men, only funny. although i do agree that portia and the scientists steal the show.
