Bend it like "Gracie"

Opening this weekend amidst the Shrek and Pirates sequels is a little movie called Gracie, about a New Jersey girl in 1978 who fights to be allowed to play on her high school's boys soccer team after her brother dies (this was only a few years after Title IX passed, and the school doesn't have a girl's team).

First, how much do you love this poster?

Nobody puts Gracie in a corner! Unless it's for a corner kick ... (couldn't resist at least one soccer joke!)

Interestingly, the movie — produced by Andrew Shue (Melrose Place) and directed by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) — is loosely based on the experiences of actress Elisabeth Shue (Adventures in Babysitting, Leaving Las Vegas), who grew up playing soccer with her brothers.

"The first day I showed up for my first tryout, a boy did steal my ball and tell me that girls couldn't play soccer," Shue said in an interview about the movie. "I definitely had lots of moments of having to overcome a lot of fear and having to live up to the pressure of playing and making sure that nobody ever said, 'Oh, she's good for a girl.'"

16-year-old actress Carly Schroeder (Port Charles) plays the title role, and Shue plays her mom. Dermot Mulroney rounds out the cast as the dad with really bad '70s hair.

Gracie combines two things I love: sports movies, and movies about girls doing something everyone tells them they can't, so I'm definitely in. But if you're still not convinced, check out the official site, and this version of the poster:

Excellent!

    looks interesting

The Jersey papers were brimming with reviews, commentaries and interviews of this film.  Based loosely on Shue’s brother that tragically died in a car accident.   I love Elizabeth Shue since ”Adventures in Babysitting” and, well, I hate to admit but I watched Melrose Place (Courtney and all) With Andrew Shue, her brother, reminded me of my own little goofy bro.  Cute but dummer than, than…well dumb.   So I think I will definitely watch this.  Sad story.

Even if it's getting so so reviews...I'll catch it! But not with my hands...

    I've Got a Blue Crush

I'm supposed to see this movie this weekend. There are supposed to be lesbian references in the movie, but not the good kind.

There is supposed to be a part in the movie that has Shue's characters friends accuse her of being a lesbian because she plays soccer.

I would like to see these movies with lesbian characters, even if not the main one.

Blue Crush? The blonde chick can mack on all the football players she wants, but I would have loved to have had Sanoe Lake going on surfing excursions with one of the other girl surfers, then I could have fast-forwarded through all the stupid parts of that movie and just watched that:

Elisabeth Shue Plans Pro Tennis Career

Elisabeth ShueThe Saint star Elisabeth Shue is in training to become a professional tennis player. The actress admits she has always been pretty good at the sport and now she's working on a second career on the courts of America.

She explains, "It's always been a dream of mine. I don't think I'll be playing at the (tennis tournament) US Open, but, by September, I'd like to be competing professionally, even at the lowest level. I've been training so hard, now I feel like more of a tennis player than an actress."

how crazy cool would it be if the us open gave her one of the wild cards! even if it was one of the qualie wild cards. last year they gave 8 to US women. i would much rather see elisabeth shue get one than alexandra stevenson. and can you imagine if she made it into the main draw......i can already see the movie:)
hmmm.....time to go write the usta:)

    You go girl!

I played on boy's teams until I was 15, and more recently played for a men's team in indoor soccer (and was the top goal scorer) and i don't remember a single comment ever being made about girls not being able to play as well as boys or anything similar...and I think that's all thanks to inspiring women like Elisabeth Shue who had the guts to stand up for what they wanted to do...I'll definitely go and see this movie

    Seems Good

Gracie looks like something that'll be one of those movies that gets overlooked and becomes hugely popular in the underground world. Count me in.

I gotta say - not that the actress isn't appealing, but from an artistic point of view, I liked the first poster better. That, if nothing else, would draw me to watch the film.

    And soccer.

I am so going to see this

I am so glad the this movie has been made.  I can soooo relate.

My freshman year in 1975, we had a rag tag girl's soccer team, the first ever for my high school, and we were coached by two guys from the varsity boys team. Our games were against Jr. high school boy's teams, and local community and state college women's teams.  No other high schools had girls soccer teams that year.  It was a learning experience for this one who had only played kickball in grade school.  My passion had been basketball, but the high school girl's b-ball coach at that time did not like girls shooting jump shots with one hand and not using the backboard (nothing but net wasn't proper mechanics). "Ladies always use both hands to aim at the backboard target to score 2 points from the perimeter!"  My how times have changed.  I was "advised" to take my lack of "girly correct" b-ball talent to the soccer team, and I have never regretted it.  The other high schools eventually fielded girl's teams, our high school girl's athletic director recruited her husband, a local university division I's men's coach, to come and coach our team. Our regional district eventually formed a league, and I went on to play for my college team and competitively in FIFA affiliated leagues back home for 28 years.  I have played both women's and co-ed soccer, both indoor and outdoor, and have made many lifelong friends.  I no longer play, as the mind is willing but the knees are not. but I truly have no regrets.  And I would like to thank that high school girl's b-ball team coach for giving me a lifetime of passion for the sport of soccer. I hear my old high school girl's b-ball team shoots nothing but net now. Heh!

    Curious ...

My English teacher always told us that soccer was a girl's sport in the USA and boys were playing American football? Is this a recent development or was my teacher just misinformed? Because the boys in my class were always rather shocked about girls playing soccer ... it's a man's sport in good ol' Europe.

Soccer is a kid's sport not

Soccer is a kid's sport not a women's sport (unlike softball, field hockey, etc.)  Almost all middle class kids of either gender grow up playing soccer, t-ball, or both, from age 7 to age 11, often on mixed gender, community-based teams (like at the local rec center).  This across-the-board involment is the basis of the term "Soccer Mom" because its virtually the only sport that kids play that is not directly through school, and almost EVERYONE plays it.  In the States, most organized sports teams are through local schools beginning in junior high, at about age 13, and that's when people stop playing on community based teams.

I remember during t-ball i used to do nothing but draw pictures in the dirt. Anyone else have good t-ball or soccer stories?  Post your own personal "baseball card" style photo---I know you all have them!

    Schroeder

I am a big fan of Carly Schroeder maybe because were the same age and I watched a lot of Lizzie McGuire back then. I also loved her in Cold Case. So I'm probably going to see it sometime soon.

So is this like some paid advertisment?

I've seen the preview ad for this movie on t.v. and have to say that it looks like crap. Do you get money from film companies for writing these kind of things? TsC

    hmmmm

did it ever occur to you that a site highlighting women might actually be interested in a film depicting a young woman standing up for themself and forging new territory in a traditionally male-dominated area?

not to mention...hello? soccer? lesbian site? connections?

    While I haven't seen anything

because I am in Germany, maybe you are into something! Here in Germany Soccer is the national sport and there are teams of all kinds, all ages, both sexes... But in USA it is still a long way to go.  Investing in Beckham so many millions to bring him as a professional player has to have a payback somewhere.  And the US is really a mine gold for anything.  So, maybe this is all a way to get people interested in Soccer and also having a nice "based on a true story' movie.

As a girl who grew up

As a girl who grew up playing soccer in the street, WITH the boys, but who was never allowed to be formally taught football at school, I know I for one will be watching this movie! I don't care if it's supposed to be crap or not! I know I will be filling up watching her overcome the odds and competing with the boys! I just wish when I remember my youth, that I could have had a cool training montage to look back on ;)))

    cool

When I played soccer and ice hockey and even baseball as a little girl, or a pre-teen, I had to fight my way into boys teams... once I grew breasts, it was even harder...

Nice looking movie, pity they will never show it here...

    Saw It

I went and saw this tonight with some friends. We all loved it. We felt like empowered females. Even though were sorta unathletic. It was compelling and by the end I was on the edge of my seat. The little bit where there calling her a dyke was done well. And beyond that it was never mentioned again which was fine with me. I like that she didnt have some boring love interest dragging her down.

One Peeve - Going to the movies and having fucking obnoxious loud scene-kids talking through the whole thing like there on the fucking Tyra Banks Show.

    can't wait to see it

I'm the same, I love to see flicks that are sporty(being that myself! :D) and that have strong female characters that can achieve big things! :D so, can't wait for this to come out in Oz.

    LAMBDA Center

They were giving away two free seats to a showing of this movie at the local Sacramento LGBT Center. I was too late to see it, but it was the first time I heard of this movie. Being a soccer player myself I'm definately going to see it. There is nothing bettter than an female empowering film! -Rachel

I kind of want to see this

It looks like it will be pretty decent. I will most likely wait until it comes out on video however. It's been to long since there was a kickass soccer movie about a girl or girls.

    OH!

I was wondering what the commotion was all about! Shues! As with Garden State, another movie with an alum from my high school, there was a large amount of fanfare at the local theater.

Setting aside that Jersey pride, I actually haven't seen it. I tend to rent movies, and am not that big a sports fan but I think I'll make an exception for this.

Carly Schroeder looks like she could kick some serious ass!
