BREAKING: ABC Pres. disses Melissa George and Brooke Smith, says Callie will soon be in a "dedicated lesbian relationship"
Here's a transcript of the exchange, which took place in a hallway after the panel (thanks to AfterElton.com's Michael Jensen for reporting back!):
Hmmm, where to start. First, McPherson calls the reporter's question about why there are so many actors leaving "absurd," then he throws Melissa George under the bus, then he throws Brooke Smith under the bus, and then he laughs away the idea that anyone could accuse Grey's of having a problem with lesbian relationships. Unfortunately, Steve didn't do his homework. Aside from not knowing how many episodes George was in (five), he incorrectly attributed the information about Melissa George being signed for more than a few episodes to departing comments from the actress trying to make herself look good. In fact, the only thing George said in her announcement last week about leaving the show was, "It was my choice. I love the show so much. I've made some beautiful friends. I love T.R. Knight. I love Patrick Dempsey, Justin Chambers … I adore Ellen Pompeo. I think she's a strong, incredible woman. And Katherine Heigl is the most beautiful creature on Earth." How self-serving of her! Then there's McPherson's implication that the only speculation about ABC execs having a problem with Callie and Erica's relationship came from Brooke Smith, when in fact many other Grey's insiders reported it as one of the factors contributing to the decision to fire her. Both EW and E! Online reported being told when Smith was fired that the execs didn't like Brooke's character in general, or her relationship with Callie, and E! Online's Kristin reported even more widespread de-gaying on the show:
And as we've seen, Sadie's flirtation with Callie did, in fact, go nowhere. Nowhere in McPherson's comments is any acknowledgment that the writing or storytelling decisions on the show may even partially responsible for viewers' mixed reception to Dr. Hahn's character or the relationship between Erica and Callie. And the idea that there's a revolving door of characters is just, well, absurd, according to Steve, even though it's painfully noticeable to viewers and the press. Buried among all this defensiveness and denial is the news that Callie will soon be entering into a "dedicated lesbian relationship," presumably with Dr. Arizona Robbins, played by guest star Jessica Capshaw, who was unofficially reported to be a potential love interest for Callie (although she's only signed for three episodes so far). Call me crazy, but I'm having a hard time getting excited about this news given ABC's history with the queer storylines and characters on this show, and its apparent refusal to acknowledge or learn from its mistakes (don't even get me started on the Denny-Izzie storyline!)
But what do you think — are you excited about this development? (For more Grey's news, see what McPherson said about rumors of T.R Knight leaving the show.) Submitted by on January 16, 2009 - 4:31pm. |

ABC
Entertainment President Steve McPherson faced a series of questions about Grey's

Are they changing their minds and making Callie gay?
Because that is seeming to be where they are headed. And as much as I'd like to see Callie with a woman, it seems odd that a woman who was previously very into guys and even when she came out, came out as bi (ok not in so many words, but by her actions) and suddenly, not only does she appear to have no interest in men anymore, she is attracted to every woman she sees?
I just hope they keep true to her character, and don't make it ridiculous. Because all the haters keep saying how silly it is to make her gay - and the thing is, I agree. It's not silly at all to make her bi....but gay? Nope, Callie is not that.
Plus, realistically, how likely is it that they haven't had any queer women before and suddenly have FOUR? Ok not at the same time, but still. Maybe Callie is going to find out that Melissa George's character is actually straight and just friendly. Actually, that'd be pretty realistic....
I don't think they are
no!
McPherson doesn't seem to know what's happening. he has no clue how long Melissa George's contract is. He seem to be so DEFENSIVE. i dont like investing my time in a show then suddenly they'll pull the plug or change the storyline. to be honest, ABC line up so far is so boring.
(don't even get me started on the Denny-Izzie storyline!) - good one Sarah. PLS...
LOL how funny was that?
McPherson doesn't seem to
McPherson doesn't seem to know squat about anything.
I love Sara Ramirez and Callie has always been my favorite Grey's character and Arizona is a good character so far, but given the history of this show and their inability to handle any relationship in a way that doesn't end in disaster, I'm not very hopeful. But I will be watching. I can't help myself. :/
Wow...
For some reason, I can't seem to reply to the original post, so Vaya, I'm just going to reply to yours. ;)
Wow, this guy is the president of ABC? What did he do, inherit it? Because he certainly doesn't have the skills and intelligence required of such a position.
But then I realized, Oh my gosh, this dude is a real idiot... NOBODY needs to say anything bad about them... they just repeatedly shoot themselves in the foot all by themselves! Lol! Silver lining there for you, ladies.
I'm over it
Meh
At this point, I could care less about what happens on the show. What really gets to me is the attitude of this network exec. He's been incredibly unprofessional, badmouthing one actress who's said nothing but good things about his show and another who seemed more confused and upset than anything that her job was suddenly gone, not to mention completely idiotic - does he not realise that people can find out what he's said before and what Melissa George has said? Plus, the idea that somehow introducing a new lesbian relationship makes up for the one that was so abruptly killed off?
Fail, Steve McPherson. Epic fail.
"Melissa George was a guest for one episode."
*Snort Laugh*
Haha! So true...He has no
Basic math
I think McPherson might be gay...
Any heterosexual man who was watching Grey's would not have overlooked repeated appearances by super-hot Melissa George. He must be gay!
So, wait... maybe he's repressing gayness on the show because he's repressing gayness in his own life!
Asshat.
I would bet Mr. McPherson got a snootful of letters and such from fans of the relationship between Erica and Callie...and so knows what people have been thinking and saying about this disaster of a season for GA and is probably defensive as a result of the wrong decisions made which should be placed at his feet.
Now to diss both Melissa and Brooke as he did...saying they were self-serving while being negative about the show...while actually both of them were nothing but class...shows the juvenille mindset that is in charge of prime time programming at a major US network.
And that is really sad.
Re:
I actually think it was more than a snootful.. (And I don't even know how much/many a snootful is.)
hehe
McPherson is a douchenozzle.
Ew what a gross name to call someone. But still. He is. He's slandering people's names left and right and giggling at the fact that yes, Callie will be in a lesbian relationship. That's hilarious! 'Come on guys settle your little carpetmunching selves down, we'll give callie a gay storyline!'
And I'm a whore because I'm gonna watch it.I'm gonna watch it, and possibly download each episode at 9.30 when it appears on a torrent site. Because i'm a whore.
I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.
So over it.
McPherson
Anyone else get the feeling
Believing....
Great Writing and well acted...
I think it is the execs who are killing Grey's Anatomy. I think the best writing of the season was Erica's revelation and her monologue about the green blobs.
"When I was a kid, I would get these headaches, and I went to the doctor and they said that I needed glasses. I didn’t understand that, it didn’t make sense to me because I could see fine, and then I get the glasses and I put them on and I’m in the car on the way home and suddenly I yell. Because the big green blobs that I’ve been staring at my whole life, they weren’t big green blobs. They were leaves. On trees. I could see the leaves. And I didn’t even know I was missing leaves, I didn’t know leaves existed, and then leaves. You are glasses. I am so gay. I am so so so gay! I am extremely gay."
It is a shame that ABC has become or remains so homophobic that it is giving up on real life relavent story lines to appease advertisers.
Jennifer beals was on The Bonnie Hunt show and spoke beautifully about how the L word gave voice to the lesbian community and how movies and tv shows tell the stories of our culture and when parts of our collective culture are left out of the stories it is as if we do not exist or matter.
It seems to me McPherson(?) would like us to not exist or matter. Shame on him.
ABC's downward spiral
With head honchos like this, it is no wonder that ABC, and its shows, are in a downward spiral. He came off looking like a complete jackass.
So, let's see if we can figure out where they're going with the Callie in a "dedicated lesbian relationship" storyline......my guess, the Denny/Izzy storyline, continual whining from Meredith, the belly-aching about being #12, etc has resulted in huge loss in the ratings department. How ever will they save the day? They'll have two hot women make out at least once an episode. Yup, that will fix everything. Watch out CSI, Grey's is making a frantic and desperate comeback.
"That which you believe becomes your world."
full of s...
that's what he seems to be. He obviously doesn't know a single thing about a show on his network and he talks respectless about Brooke Smith and Melissa George. Ignorant, arrogant and stupid. He can "try" to make anything he wants to "make" Callie gay now as much as he wants. Too little too late. For me, this all got screwed up the second Brooke Smith / Dr. Hahn was fired. I just don't care anymore.
Huh?
Hello!?!?! Mr McFearson? How stupid are you? Do you want me to watch the show? Do you want me to be excited about Callie's relationship? Then think a little! Don't diss Brooke Smith!! She's become a martyr, an icon. Are you inable to learn from your mistakes? And the chuckle? COME ON!
Can't believe how much all this affects me. And I don't even watch the show anymore!
Funny, funny, funny....
Interviews with the folks over at ABC and Grey’s Anatomy remind me of a conversation I heard while waiting around to be called as a witness in court. Honest to goodness, I really heard the judge say this to the guy. Here’s the setting: A man apparently did not stop for a school bus that was picking up children one morning and he’s now standing in front of the judge…
Judge: How do you plead?
Man: Not guilty. I didn’t see the bus.
Judge: So, what you’re telling me is that you didn’t see the giant, bright yellow school bus with the flashing strobe on top, the red blinking lights, and the huge stop sign?
Man: Nope, I didn’t see it.
Judge (as gavel falls): GUILTY!
Honestly, if it wasn’t so sad, it would be funny.
Whatever.
Yeah, I've been with this show from the start but I'm done with it. The Brooke debacle was the final straw for me.
I can't believe the level of disrespect these people show for the actors that have worked on their show. It's awful.
As for Callie, whatever, I don't care. Sorry Sara, you're great, but I'm over this heaping pile of crap. I don't believe these writers are capable of handling this storyline (or any storyline) well, or that this will turn out to be good representation of lesbian/bisexual women and relationships. Even if it did, it wouldn't erase or rectify the mess they made with Callica and everything else surrounding that.
Bottom line is I just don't give a crap anymore.
People should know better than to get invested in anything on this show by now.
Haha, I feel like they're
So grateful
I'm so grateful to be done with this show. It makes McPherson's case of the stupids easier to deal with.
Catch up with you in your next project, Sara.
*mind reels*
Oh, this is just too much.
NBC is McPherson and McDreamy-free. Thanks for the Nancy Drew work, but I'm pretty much content over there on Thursday nights.
Inkblots
Wow.
If I didn't know any better I could swear that the transcript in this post was FGN. I didn't know it was possible for someone to have their head that far up their ass. I can't believe he actually said those words. Asshat personified. How can I have so much disdain for a show I'm not even watching. Will someone just cancel it already and give Sara Ramirez another job?
And, if this guy is the HBIC of entertainment over at ABC (I confess to not knowing the tier system and if daytime and primetime have different HBsIC), it explains SO much of why AMC is sucking like a gaping chest wound these days. But, if it's not his fault, I'm going to blame him anyway because he's that much a efftard.

McPherson is a studio exec
McPherson is a studio exec which makes him a politician. so I am not surprised to hear the same lameass dodgebally replies (not answers cos he didnt really answer a question now did he?!) that we are already used to from actual politicians. replying to a question doesn't equal answering the question.
his dodging approach to that informal Q&A just confirms my impression that everything we have heard so far from set insiders and reporters is true. why else would he have to dodge?

Yep, I agree...
he is just a politician, and a bad one. Well said.
I am just so tired of relationship drama on the show; all that angsts! The most brilliant dramas are medical ones, like the kid that was buried in cement. Yep, he was motivated by a crush, but that will be all we know of it. It ended in one episode and we don't need to go and watch some on/off thing.
I guess that's what a DVR's for, you fast forward all those whiny year-long relationship drama and McSteamy struting around.
MacPherson
I really can't believe how unprofessional he sounds! There are a lot of ways he could have tried to negate the anti-gay rumours without revealing himself to have zero knowledge of what's actually going on on one of his headline shows.
Even if he doesn't watch most of what's on his network, surely it's part of his job to keep an eye on the headliners and shows getting attention? He just seems so unprepared.
I love the idea of his PA giving him updates on what's going on on his shows and the backstage scandals in the form of flashcards like Johnathan drilling Jack Donaghy in the first episode of 30 Rock!
greys..
i just think it's so disappointing that there was such a promising start to their relationship, and it was so well handled at the beginning. sure there was a little gay panic, sure callie was freaking out and erica mentioned "a lot of therapy" or something after their kiss(es), but it was a-okay. and then there was mark sloan. which at first i found humourous. but now it seems like that point there, when callie asked a man to instruct her in regards to her own anatomy, that it started going downhill. i think whatever mcpherson's saying about the "dynamic" of the relationship, no one is responsible for it but the writers. i'm sorry, but callie and erica aren't real people (as much as i hate to admit it) and if there's anyone to blame for the demise of them as a couple is rhimes and her team themselves, yeh? so whatever that dipshit's saying about brooke smith he's totally missed the mark and should just go jump.
also wth erica was the one with the coming out story not callie? and callie liked the flowers as well as the leaves? jesus effing christ. slippery slope...
O-MI-GAWD
Is he serious? Is he f-ing serious? What a pr*ck! What a homophobic pr*ck. I have no doubt from the interview that he's the reason Rimes wasn't able to introduce a truly queer plot into the show. BAAAH HUMBUG!
Why start something you're not going to finish? What's with this senseless teasing??
Man, I'm mad. And McPherson's fugly.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
I used to love this show so
I am so angry!
Can't the execs see that this whole entire situation is wrong??? I am so disgusted at ABC's actions and now THIS? I'm new to this little homophobic song and dance that television networks play so sorry that I'm mad as hell. If they just kept everything the way it was, NO ONE WOULD'VE CARED! But NOOOOO! You had to go and piss off all the lesbians and now they're in deep trouble for looking like such homophobes! I truly dislike ABC now (if you haven't noticed) and I'm considering boycotting them.
Dude
Oh, and another thing, Mr. McPhearson, when trying to get back onside with the lesbians, it would be a good idea to not diss Brooke Smith!!
Just proves what an epic failure you and your network are.
Hello??
Wow, in case he hasn't noticed...something is seriously wrong with this show. Seems like his official spin (magic, chemistry yadda...) so mirrors the official spin credited to Shonda that it does imply something about its source. Odd that he's laughing about the "dedicated" lesbian relationship that Callie will apparently have...until something changes again. Maybe Brooke escaped just in time. Can't wait to see her in something else.
As for me, I'm back to watching Gwen Ifill (yeah!) and really enjoyed reading Emma Donoghue's novel, Landing.
?
Ya'll saw the fact that Callie is gon' get her freak on with Arizona right?
Never live in the past! Live in the moment!
The best you can do is try and get them to be as positive with her storyline as they can. She hasn't killed herself and isn't pregnant yet, so I see this as a good thing.
Yay for Callie exploring this aspect of herself.
Yes we've been disappointed. But you know what would be even more disappointing? Not having her be queer at all.
Jessica Capshaw = Brooke Smith replacement.
I like the thought of Jessica Capshaw being the new love interest i guess... but that seems very much like... replacing one Pretty blond docter at the top of her field, for another.
I watch greys anatomy this season as I would veiw a horrible train wreck. Not a pleasent scene but I can not keep my eyes off.
