In 3Way's latest confessional, Andrea reclaims "dyke," Roxie tries
to make "sporty" happen, and all four roommates discuss gold star
lesbians and how they lost their virginity.
I don't have a problem with the word lesbian... It sounds a lot better than the portuguese version "lésbica".. so... its fine! I don't have a problem with the word dyke either...
I did not understood what this "gold star" thing means (non-american ignorance)... can someone please explain it to me??
"Thats damn right I'm a dyke... Can I lick yo pusssay?!" LMAO
It's one of those words that's only acceptable if a member of the group uses it - it's offensive if some random dude calls you that, but if someone refers to themselves with it, it's okay. Like chick - it's much milder, but I don't like it if some guy calls me "a chick", but I don't care if a woman does.
I like it better than lesbian, for the record, and I think gay lady sounds stupid and gayelle ridiculous.
I agree with you that it seems rude/offensive if someone called anyone a dyke but I think its a double standard (that doesn't make any sense to me) when a gay woman calls another gay woman a dyke. Granted its a personal preference and in that respect I'm uptight because I prefer gay. But as a side note: 3 Way is amazing and wonderfully humorous. I'm shocked alone that I can watch something there I like the ENTIRE cast. Everyone is talented and interesting. I LOVE Cathy Shim saying "Oh poor Jill Bennett's reputation." And Jill Bennett's character is ridiculously funny. I would love to see Maeve Quinlin's character be gay (loved Jill and her making out because Maeve has commented that she has a girl crush on Jill which is cute) Great show, great actresses, great/honest writing.
I like the word lesbian and i dont have a problem with the word dyke..but i agree, dyke is one word that's only acceptable if a member of the group uses it...
Although I don't hate the word lesbian, I think it's unfair that we are often called that in stead of gay. I love the word gay! Why can't we gay people just all be gay?LOL But everything is better than the Dutch word 'Lesbisch'. I hate that word... It sounds like a disease...
if you type "dyke" you get the translation "Lesbe". if you type "Lesbe" you get the translation "dyke, lesbian". and then there is the word "Kampflesbe" - "bull dyke". So I would say lesbian and dyke have the same meaning here. But lesbian is the only word to use here. Can't use gay cause it stands for "schwul" and that word is only for the guys.
Did that make any sense??? *g*

i really don't mind the word Lesbian. Actually i like it. If it was just a word someone randomly thought of and assigned to mean women who are attracted to other women. But that would be weird. It originates from the island of Lesbos in Greece so it isn't just a random word. It's relevant to a historical trend. The women from the island of Lesbos were known to sleep with other women. So then they're called Lesbians....i like it. It's just become a bit of an over-exposed term. Mainly when you think of straight men always on about it and it's being used to describe things that are so gratuitous....that pisses me off...but the word in itself is cool
"If you should see her...tell her I miss her still." -- Galinda. 'Wicked'
The only instances when I refer to myself as a "lesbian" is when I am talking to my parents (so as to not offend their Victorian sensibilities...any further, that is.) Even when I came out to my younger brother I told him that if he were ever to refer to my sexuality he would have to use the word "dyke." Granted, giving a 16 year old boy free reign to use the word "dyke" probably wasn't the best idea but I gotta do what I gotta do.
I don't really like the wordlesbian either! I think it make us sound like some sort of species of type of animals like the word amphibian. Well, it does rhyme you know..lesbian,amphibian.
hahah this confessional cracked me up. I wanna know if this is improv or did someone actually write this script? hahah the way Jill said some of those lines were just perfect. I couldn't stop laughing.
thought lesbian is fine as well. I'm brazilian and I hate the words we have for it.
. lesbian = "lésbica" (but I usually say "lés" which sounds ok to me).
. dyke = "sapatão" (big shoe! ewww, *hate* this one. Sometimes my gay male friends say "sapinha", short for "sapatão", and it also means little frog, hahaha) or "fancha" (usually this one just makes me laugh).
They're all ok... Got my favorites though: dyke,in English, and sapa (short for sapatão, babyjune mentioned), in Brazilian Portuguese. Also, lez, for whatever language...
The reason why I don't really mind the words can be expressed by this quote:
"Ninguém conseguirá me ofender me chamando por nomes que significam apenas o meu amor por outra mulher" (in English, it would be something like: "No one will ever offend me by calling me names that only mean my love for another woman") - by out Brazilian writer Vange Lonel
OMG this one was the best one so far... i love Jill and Maeve ...
It cracked me up when Maile was commenting on her marriage, but.. uhm.. i can assure you that not all marriages are like that - to a man, might be - to a woman, not at all!!! :p
Another scene that cracked me up was when Cathy was making the link between gold stars and nuns.. wtf?? lol very funny
For the record: I like the word dyke way more than lesbian and i dont find it offensive at all.. maybe that's because i'm brazilian and the word "lésbica" is awful.. as mentioned by other members before
"Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning"
Love that word... No clue why... But I do!
Oh and I was sitting here going dyke dyke dyke to my computer, and I think my mum thought I was having some sort of a breakdown (I had headphones on)...
Jill wearing the wrist-cuff to match her shirt? How wrist-cuffy of her? (Overdone ,yeah).
Mmm Dyke....I was called that in HS after I came out so I'm not so sure about that one. Gay does sound short, sweet and to the punch. If you tell people you're Lesbian, their r no lightbulbs that go off in their heads; they r not use to that word.
I'm a Fem(since it's used by LGBTQI comm). Plus it's like a secret code that only a LGBTQI person would know. Mysteriousness is sexy.
I like Cathy's character describing sex with a man the first time. So true. My favorite line was from Geri about marriage.
That was hysterical!! TOTALLY WRISTCUFFY (literally since Jillie Andrea was actually wearing one!) I swear every time I think it can't get any better you bring out the gold star card!!
At first I hated the word lesbian but it sort of grew on me! But I have to agree with Andrea, dyke is so much better! But my (straight) friends hate the word dyke...I guess that's why they're not!
"Damn right I'm a dyke! Can I lick yo pussy?" = Best. Line. Ever.
You can be sure I'll remember that line at the most inopportune moment (class or even worse church!) and start laughing hysterically!
The way Andrea reclaimed "dyke" reminded me of Michelle Paradise's short "The ten rules" where Michelle basically does the same thing in one of the outtakes :)
