Rumors about the CW, and we don't mean on "Gossip Girl"

For a channel that nobody’s watching, the CW Network sure is in the press a lot this summer.

From rumors of Gossip Girl spin-offs to the revival of 90210 (and its casting announcements) is the network finding itself with a little momentum? Maybe? Just a little? The network has even gone creative in trying to figure out how to save itself. It’s asking a production company to program its Sunday nights since I guess it couldn’t manage to do itself. For a while it was being reported that the plug might be pulled on the entire thing! We’ve all heard of canceling a show but canceling an entire network?

Who cares about the CW, you ask? Well, I’ll tell you who cares, darn it! OK, fine, not a whole bunch of people it seems, and that’s the real problem it’s facing. If a network airs a show and no one is there to watch it does it make a sound?

The CW, the current home of both Gossip Girl and America’s Next Top Model, formed in 2006 as a combination of the old UPN and WB networks. It was purposely designed to appeal to the 18-34 demographic sort of like one of its predecessors the WB. That now defunct network had its share of hits (and favorites of many AfterEllen.com readers) like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson’s Creek, Felicity, Charmed and Popular. (Whoa, that would sure make a good network line-up, no?)

The CW was handed over some pretty popular shows in 2006 but over the two years of its existence it has managed to cancel Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars and most recently Girlfriends, Beauty and the Geek and it even canned WWE Wrestling! All of these cancellations have stung the fans of these respective shows (not to mention removed several female-centric shows and that’s annoying!) leaving the media talking heads with questions regarding the CW’s future.

Gossip Girl is the flagship scripted show of the network but one show’s ratings does not a network make. And all though the TV creators of Gossip Girl are trying to squelch the rumors of a Jenny Humphrey spin-off, such a spin-off may come to pass if ratings overall for the network do not improve with the network’s fall schedule. If things get so bad maybe the network will consider giving each of the characters their own separate nights! Hmm, what would that look like … Serena Sundays, Jenny Mondays, Dan Tuesdays, Nate Wednesdays, Parent Thursdays and yes, I’m Chuck Bass Fridays. Oh goodness, I think I’m on to something!

If the CW fails and Gossip Girl fades away to that Brilliant But Canceled TV heaven and America’s Next Top Model slips and trips right off the runway I’ll be one bummed out girl-loving-girl girl. With The L Word leaving the air after this upcoming season I don’t want to think about the possibly of losing more shows that I enjoy watching. (Yes, it’s me, me, me!)

So here’s to hoping the CW’s new shows and new creative programming schemes help secure its survival. Well, at least survive long enough to have one of the AfterEllen.com Hot 100 Gossip Girls (#43 and #49) come to an I-dig-the-ladies epiphany!

    OTH-

Don't forget ONE TREE HILL! I love that show~! I'd be devastated if they pulled the plug.

    ¸.·´¯)It's true, we're all a little insane(¯`·.¸

They cannot pull the plug on...

Gilmore Girls, Everwood and Veronica Mars...and expect to keep me watching with shows like Beauty and the Geek!

Here is their problem...as much as their demographic is 18 to 34...there were actually a heck of a lot of us slightly *cough* over *cough* 34 who were watching all of those shows too.

It is part of how I maintained my status as the *cool* aunt for so many years...lol...but there is no way I am going to give up my valuable time for anything on that network other than ANTM (some seasons) and GG.

Oh but my niece does love Supernatural...but he will forever be "Dean" to me! lol

    :)

    Come back V Mars!

I love Gossip Girl- but I must say that if the CW was dumb enough to cancell one of the best shows on television (Veronica Mars) I don't know how it can last.

Check out and upload great lesbian videos on www.tellofilms.com

    yea..

that's what The CW gets for canceling Veronica Mars

    I cannot...

watch that network, since I live in Sweden.

But the shows I watch from that network is Smallville, OTH and Top Model. That's it. The rest kinda sucks..

Watched the first 8 eps of Gossip Girl, but after that I kinda lost interest...

    I can't even think straight...

    I love Supernatural the show

That show is one of the reasons I watch the CW besides Smallville. I don't like the idea of a lot of people losing their jobs either

    Meh.

Since they cancelled VM (those turds!), I have barely turned on the TV to watch the network. I watched Smallville (which sucks now and is losing half the cast this season) and GG (the part with Michelle T.) online from various sources.

So, basically, *shrug* at the failing CW. Oh, and, that's what they get for treating Charmed like poo back in the day.

Though the idea of no ANTM-inspired WGN makes me sad.

    The CW...

didn't cancel WWE Smackdown the contract the two companies had expired and because the ratings on the network were awful they ended their relationship.  But the idea of a TV Network that some people in america can't get doing as good as or better than the big three(or four) for more than one night a week isn't something that is going to happen no matter what they put on air. Its sad but a reality of tv.

    Too many good shows cancelled

I was so pissed when they cancelled Charmed, I loved that show so much. And Veronica Mars too, seriously? They're just asking for it, I'm sure Gossip Girl could probably be picked up by another network though. I'd be pretty upset if I couldn't get my weekly dose of Blair & Serena.

    Charmed was getting pretty

Charmed was getting pretty bad, though. The whole Billie thing & her sister who convinced her to be evil was so cheeseball.

    GG will live on through

GG will live on through another network if the CW is killed. Although I would be more than happy to have Jenny spun right off my DVR.

And yes, those responsible for the demise of VMars belong in the same circle of hell as TPTB that cancelled Arrested Development.

    Ratings!

That's what it's all about. I am one of those slightly over 34's...I'm 49. I actually loved the old WB and was a regular watcher of Creek, Buffy, Felicity, Popular, GG and Veronica. But even with all their acclaim and popularity the WB/CW did what all networks do... hand out pink slips.  There's just too much going on out in television land.

I wonder if the 18-34 are all they are cracked up to be. Not to imply that that demo is less intelligent or less sophisticated or what  have you. But the only reason these good shows stayed on as long as they did was because the viewers were passionate and I think the network just wanted to give these shows a fighting chance. I think TPTB really believed in the power of the demo as well as the quality of these shows.  And in that regard, I think they succeeded b/c Creek, GG and Buffy had quite a bit of staying power. But if these shows had been on "network" tv they probably wouldn't have lasted 2-3 seasons. That lone demo could not support them for the very long haul. Perhaps b/c they did cater to that audience, maybe older viewers just dismissed them as inane, sex crazed shows for people whose only idea of culture was Britney  and the latest Nintendo game. While I never thought that way I think lots of older Americans do.

Maybe it's the fact that they played to the 18-34 ( and I personally think that they really wanted the 25 to 30 set.) As I mentioned before, the direct targeting of a specific group turned off other groups. It happens on network tv when you have shows with African American protagonists, for instance, and they fail b/c apparently Americans (read white ) cannot relate. (Cosby not withstanding) Soul Food lasted about 4 seasons on Showtime. None of the networks would have kept it on so long. I loved that show!

Another example would be American Dreams. I know lots of AE readers loved that show. Maybe the 1960's theme pigeon holed the show. Honestly, there's a segment of the 18-34 that finds that era completely irrelevant. NBC tried, and kept it for 2-3 seasons.

The WB/CW is to be commended for sticking with shows for a long time. They give more chances than the other alphabet networks. It would indeed be a shame to cancel the CW. I don't watch Gossip Girl, One Tree and Supernatural but I respect them. I really hope it doesn't go under. Maybe cable is the only solution. Or the internet.

I actually think that these fledgling networks serve a purpose. I think they have allowed the suits at the networks to see that shows do not have to follow tried and true formats. They can be quirky, insightful and just plain different. There needn't be a formula. I mean could Heroes have even made it so big if not for shows like Buffy and Angel? Could Scrubs ( even though that show got moved a lot, the critics loved it and the ratings were decent) have succeeded without the quirkiness of Popular?

    No!

What about One Tree Hill and Smallville. Those are some of my favorite shows :( they can't just stop showing them...hopefully they will live on through another network! :D
    tuckeer's picture

     Instead of

Instead of cancelling the entire network why don't they rename it...again. It could be called PPP (Possibly Picked up Pilots) and cancel all more-than-one-season-long shows. This new network would be the womb for all other networks to test out new show for 1 season only. Then, at the end of the one season run, they could be adopted by another(alphabet) network or aborted.

    That's actually a pretty

That's actually a pretty cool concept, although I have a feeling that you aren't being serious ;)

    What about Reaper????

    You forgot to mention Reaper!!!!

They can't pull the plug on CW!! Where else am I going to watch Missy Peregrym every Wednesday night???!!!!

And I still can't forgive 'em for cancelling Veronica Mars!! But maybe a few more seasons of Reaper could make me... I said maybe!

Nooo! The CW has to last,

Nooo! The CW has to last, because I can't be without Serena and Blair on Gossip Girl. Unless I were to know for a fact that it would continue on another network. Heh. I'm easy that way.

    They should create the CSN

The Cancelled Show Network and bring back Arrested, V Mars, Jerico, Carnivale from HBO, and all the other fabulous shows that got p'nked by mainstream TV.

    I say bring back Veronica

I say bring back Veronica Mars :)

Oh man, such wishful thinking, but honestly, really. They need programs. BRING IT BACK!
