News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Meet the Wachowski siblings

When I saw Bound for the first time, I was completely confused. How could anyone named Andy and Larry Wachowski, aka the Wachowski Brothers, bring such sensual heat and intense believability to a lesbian-themed film?

Well, I still don't have the irrefutable answer to that mystery, but it's been reported that Larry Wachowski has recently transitioned to Lana Wachowski. That means the Wachowski brothers are now the Wachowski siblings, and I can have at least a minor "ah ha!" moment of clarity. I don't care how fleeting the clarity was. (See, it's gone already.) But what I do know is if what's being reported proves true, we now have a prominent woman writing futuristic action adventure films! I say yay to any and all sisters doing it for themselves. It matters not how one became a sister; the important part is that Lana Dub (that's Lana W for the un-hip) is a sistah now, and a creatively talented and respected one at that.

According to the Rated-M blog, Larry began making public appearances as a woman following the release of Matrix Reloaded.

There is some uncertainty as to whether or not Lana has actually made a full surgical transition. To that speculation, I say details, shmeetails. Lana is still Lana, and Lana will share whatever she wants to share about her story if and when she ever chooses to do so, and that may be never and I am OK with that. The Wachowskis (as that seems to be the name they will now go by) will be doing some promotions and interviews related to Speed Racer, due out in May 2008. It's thought, however, that any real discussion of Lana's transition will not occur prior to the movie's release, for fear that such publicity may dampen the "family friendliness" of the film's target audience. I do hope that something so personal as transitioning from male to female would not cause the Wachowskis' career to stumble or to be sullied in any way. That would really be a shame, because research suggests that what has been written and directed or produced by Larry has always really been written and directed or produced by Lana.

Obviously, the decision to move forward with the transition brought the associated personal, emotional and professional risks of "losing it all." So if in fact she went ahead, knowing all about the risks of backlash and rejection, that would simply make me find her decision even more courageous and inspiring. I feel the same way about another recent male-to-female transition, that of Los Angeles Times sportswriter Christine Daniels, who began her sportswriting career as Mike Penner. Yep, a sportswriter. You can imagine the throat-clearing and head-scratching she must have envisioned and feared when she made her transition public, especially given the male-dominated sports world she navigates. Daniels now blogs about her journey and continues her sports reporting. So far, she has been amazed at the overall positive response from the masses. I wonder if Christine and Lana have ever met? (Yes, that's a joke. You know how everyone assumes that if you're gay you must know every other gay person on earth?)

As for the Wachowskis, they have turned The Matrix into a bona fide moneymaking franchise, including video game sales — and with moneymaking comes clout. The thought of having Lana Wachowski's value in this business challenged or devalued based on her personal journey is a troubling thought. Only time will tell, of course, but I hope what time tells will be kind.

But now that Lana is Lana, fully transitioned or otherwise, I really have only one question: When is the Bound sequel coming out? OK, fine, I had that same question for the Wachowski brothers, but now I can ask it with a smile because I do not have to grudgingly ask two men to satisfy my desire. That is, my desire to see what Violet and Corky are up to 10 years later. Keep it clean, people.

    wow..

that comes as a complete surprise for me. But then again, I don't know much about the Wachowskis.

Is It or Isn't It True?

According to FOXNews.com Larry is still Larry. They spoke to producer Joel Silver about the rumors and he said, “It’s all untrue. They just don’t do interviews, so people make things up.
    Pyewacket's picture

That's what I am reading too.

Some blogs that reported he is now Lana have been updated to point to the Fox News article stating it is untrue.

    the uncertainty

As roc points out in this post, "There is some uncertainty as to whether or not Lana has actually made a full surgical transition. To that speculation, I say details, shmeetails."

I think we'll make that our official stance on the subject until we hear otherwise. :)

    Aha!!

I heard this rumour about one year ago, and it makes sense to me. If you look at the female characters written by them in Bound, Matrix trilogy and V for Vendetta, you will see strong, intelligent women that seriously kick-b utt!!

    glwtta's picture

So, does that mean we should

So, does that mean we should expect to see Jess Whedon and Quanita Tarantino pretty soon?

    Yeah ...

I've heard rumours and news either way on this today. Some saying this is the case, some saying not. Maybe, maybe not.

Basically it's my sense that the questions isn't whether Lana is trans or not, but whether or not she's had the surgery. Course, I could be wrong about that too.

However, regardless of if Lana has had the surgery or not, good on her for having the courage and strength to be herself! I have some trans friends and they are some of the strongest people I know.

    Pyewacket's picture

What I am reading is the opposite.

The surgery is not required for Larry to become Lana and from what I am reading - people who know and work with these two are saying Larry is still Larry.  So I am not seeing anyone wondering about the surgery as much as it is a question as to whether this person is even transitioning from male to female.

Sure, people can deny things until they stop denying...so we will have to see how this plays out...

    ryath's picture

    Well ...

It's just that I have been hearing these rumours and reading these reports for a couple years now, and over time the progression from Larry to Lana has been a solid and consistent trend (ie, not just that it was happening, but that things were progressing). Surgery and/or living as Lana could easily fit well within all that.

I mean, I could be wrong of course.

And of course the surgery is not required for Larry to become Lana, where did you read that I thought anything other than that?
    Pyewacket's picture

    Hmmm.

The first part of my first sentence was not in any way a commentary about what you think or do not think regarding the transition process in general - it was simply my preface to the point I was going to be getting at - no more and no less.

    ......

Yes, we are aware of the contrasting reports, especially the Fox News report as of yesterday. The blog is not written as fact but more as a "if this proves to be true" circumstance.... Just like one's sexual orientation until one owns it, claims it, or denies it it's all speculation. The Wachowskis have said nothing on the subject as of yet. As mentioned in the blog there can be concern about what impact if any this "news" may have on the live action Speed Racer movie they will be releasing. That movie has a ton of money tied to it and maybe this type of speculation will not be substantiated until after the movie is released. Or not:) Lana (or Larry) does not owe anyone an explanation, of course, so one may not be forth coming at all:) (I'll keep checking in on the subject)

    Faux News

Funny that Fox News' Roger Friedman claimed to be so "surprised" when he heard about this...because he failed at breaking the very story over a year ago!

Talk about jealousy! He gets pissed because some local rag breaks it and he didn't, so now he's all "surprised" and makes up his own rebuttal. Get real Faux News. Get real.

I'm sticking with Rated-M.com on this one.

    Best to him/her..

I remember hearing something about Larry having some interesting fetishes years ago. Then, I started hearing about this Larry/Lana transitioning, but it’s such a sensitive subject that I’ve always felt uncomfortable with all this speculation. It must be so hard for Larry and his family.

I love the Wachowski siblings work and I just hope that their movie plans are not hurt by this.  Hope Hollywood won’t abandon them.

    years of speculation

Yeah, I remember reading things back in 2003 or 2004. Just google it and you find articles dating back to that time. As for Fox news, that guy wrote an article about Wacowski and these issues last year! Now he's saying he's surprised? Puuuh-leese. What a weasel. I think there's a reason Lana Wachowski has never said anything publicly.. 1) it's no one's business 2) by not denying it which she NEVER has she is giving a tacit nod. That's my take. Saying nothing is the best call in this circumstance. Denying it would be all kinds of wrong unless it is really is not true. If there is truth to it then denying it is detrimental, I think. It's denying your whole existence and that's what the transitioning is suppose to mean. It's to validate and liberate you as the human being you know yourself to be. So I doubt that Lana will issue some denial statement and that's probably why she never has attempted to end any rumors. Besides of course people tied to Speed Racer are going to say "uh, well, uh NO!" The movie will probably be G-rated. I wouldn't say a damn thing if I was Lana.

This was a good mix of the "what if" balanced with a "why does it matter" and a "yippee I hope it's true!" feel. Thanks for the take on this. You're a fun read.

I think it's a kind of prank. This is what I've found:

    re: Hm...

Yes, but what you posted in that link is still solely based on the exact same Fox News story from yesterday that roc and others have already mentioned in the thread. Unless a person has been with Lana in the "biblical way" or is her surgeon or if she makes a statement or releases a statement through credible channels that have the authority to speak for her like agents or a publicist then what Fox is reporting is no more true than what Rated-M is blogging. Bloggers are getting stories first these days. That's what crazy. They don't have to be all journalistic and dot every i and cross every T.  Plus, If I was the exec on a multi-million dollar movie thinking I might lose cash if the truth is known then I'd do some gate guarding too calling the reports crazy. There is history behind reports of Wachoski's sexual proclivities as it were. He has been seen out in women's clothing. Has he had the sexual reassignment surgery? *shrugs* He's never say anything about any of this stuff and it's been around for years.

Heck, Jodi Foster has never confirmed or denied her sexuality. Because by denying it it leaves the person boxed into a corner and potentially seen as a liar if they ever do come out. But not discussing it seems to be the "play of the day" for many.

    Prank?

You could see hints of this coming years back. If you listen to the commentary track on Bound, Lana referred to herself as "sort of a straight guy".

    Lana is hot!

    As long as the boobs look good, I could work with whatever else she might be packing.  No need for further surgery.  {insert evil grin here}

    L is a woman!

Like Mossy, I've been hearing this for years. There was a huge Rolling Stone article about it a few years ago too. I remember when L's (I've heard many rumours about what name she goes by now, so I'll just call her L) wife asked for a divorce, she claimed L had been cross-dressing. Now we know that was more than just cross-dressing but someone who was actually trans. Then L became involved with a high-profile Hollywood dominatrix (in a uhm, professional way, as in she was paid) until the dom chose to leave her husband (who was actually a transmale pornstar) for L. Seriously, I didn't make that up. Though it is a pretty great story. L's been transitioning since then.

The only clue you really need is that after the first Matrix, the 'Wachowski Brothers' started labelling all their movies as the 'Wachowskis'.

It seems to me that a lot of the confusion could be due to people's ignorance of trans issues. If she hasn't had the operation then people can't see her as female. Many people don't understand genderqueer and if you don't want the operation then you aren't really trans. If L hasn't fully transitioned then somehow she's not a women yet to these foolish sources.

Look folks, there are countless stories from all over supporting that L is trans and just one originating source (from Fox!) saying otherwise. I think it's obvious who's correct.

    IMDB

If you look up the Wachowskis on IMDB it comes up as

    1. Larry Wachowski

    aka "Lana Wachowski"

    aka "The Wachowski Brothers"

    birth name "Laurence Wachowski"

    Then it lists Andy Wachowski...
