Katie Couric tarts it up for Dan RatherOh no. Katie's in a quagmire again. As I blogged back in July, Katie Couric seems to be a lightning rod for criticism, especially when she's discussing her anchoring job on the CBS Evening News.
The latest topic of controversy is a video of Couric making fun of Dan Rather. Well, not Dan himself, but his obsession with his appearance and wardrobe during a live outdoor broadcast some years ago. Why would Couric make fun of a
legend-in-his-own-mind like Dan Rather? Well, maybe it's because Rather,
when asked during an interview to give his opinion of her performance, dismissively accused the network — and not-so-indirectly
the woman herself — of "dumbing it
down and tarting it up."
Instead of calling Rather a pompous airbag (which would have
easily rolled off my tongue — OK, something much worse would have), Couric took the slam in stride. For a while
there, media types were queuing up to criticize Couric, so Rather's comment
had to take a number and stand in line. Fast-forward a few months and it turns out that Katie, in an off-the-air moment, did some needling of her own. In the video, Couric jokes, "I'm going to be like Dan Rather." She then adds, "Geez, don't you think he deserves a little payback?" She begins to laugh and says, "This tart is ready to go!" Watching the video of Couric having fun with her staff and crew will make little sense if you haven't seen the Rather video, so let's start with that one: Was that as silly to you as
it was to me? Here's Couric's take: Two things make this all very humorous to me. (1) Rather was extremely quick and more than happy to jump on the bandwagon of offering his negative opinion of Couric's journalistic credibility. Smells like sour grapes. (2) Rather is suing CBS, his old bosses, for allegedly making him the scapegoat for incorrect information Rather reported as fact. Simply put, the lawsuit is Rather's attempt to polish up his bruised ego and image because his own journalistic credibility has taken a hit. So watching Mr. War-coverage-over-celebrity-coverage
spend 20 long, inane and ridiculous minutes discussing whether or not
he should wear a trench coat on air during an outside news feed in Seattle —
and if he chooses to wear the trench coat, should the collar be up or
down? — gave me a laugh and a hearty "Oh, brother" moment. It's annoying to watch Rather care so much about his appearance, now that I know he later took swipes at Couric for not being a "real journalist."
The chatter around the radio talk shows is that Couric's mocking video is in poor taste. There's a part of me that thinks, "Yeah, she shouldn't have done it" (although it was not for public consumption), but that part of me is in a very heated debate with the part of me that says, "That's dang funny, Katie, and you couldn't have made fun of a more deserving guy under the circumstances!" Did she cross a line? Is this much ado about nothing? Should she have kept the coat unbuttoned? Submitted by on November 21, 2007 - 1:38pm. |

HA!
She's not being particularly harsh, and she's pretty funny. It's also awesome to see him being so uber concerned about his appearance and she being relatively flippant about hers--especially after he said such critical things. His earlier comments seemed a little sexist to me, anyway.
But more importantly, how hilarious is it to hear Katie Couric say "dude" and "what up" and "I'm just laying some jewish guilt on you, bro."? Yo, She's in tune with young kids.
it's generational ...
I'm sure you're right with your observations about Dan Rather having a bruised ego.
However I have a feeling that it goes deeper than that - I think it's completely generational. He comes from news as being an all-boys club - look at his peer class of journalists - Morley Safer, Mike Wallace, the late Ed Bradley ... good ol' boy Dan took over for Walter Cronkite. He started in the 1950's, when Edward Morrow was king. And if you've seen Good Night, and Good Luck, I think it's an acurate representation of women in the media (ie serving as secretaries and a few lucky writers) ...
he didn't have to start working with women till the late 70's, with the likes of Connie Chung and Diane Sawyer ... none of this an excuse for behavior, just an observation.
As for Katie Couric, she's not my favorite female journalist out there, but she's doing her best, and getting weirdly unnecessary flack for it. Although, she's played the light, airy partner, meant to do the human interest/funny demonstrational pieces for both Bryant Gumble, and then Matt Lauer. They were always touted as the "serious" journalists, while Katie was left as the "feel good" woman.
She's been trying to break out of that particular type-casted box with this move to CBS, and I have nothing but respect for that.
And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....
Karma is a bitch, dude.
From what I remember reading Walter Cronkite was pushed aside when he left the anchor chair and Dan Rather had a hand in it happening.
Now while Mr. Rather might have been made the scapegoat for the report about Pres. Bush's time with the National Guard that Rather fronted...Rather was not shown the door because of Katie Couric.
So now he doesn't like how he was treated by CBS and is partially taking it out on Katie?
Maybe he should take a queue from Walter...and out-class the opposition.
While network news might bow to the will of the government and corporations at times here in the US...or even a lot of the times...that is not new news. That struggle has been going on forever. Edward R. Murrow was fighting that fight before anyone knew who Dan Rather was.
Respectfully ...
Edward R. Murrow was fighting that fight before anyone knew who Dan Rather was.
Of course. I agree! That's wasn't my point in mentioning Edward Morrow ... it was to point out the "boys club" that was firmly established when Dan Rather was still learning how to quote (or not) his sources. Trust me, I'd STILL take Morrow over Rather (and most other journalists) any day of the week.
I am in no way sticking up for Dan Rather ... in some ways he reminds me of my grandfather, who is the same age, and has similar anti-female leanings - mainly because that was indoctrined for so long ... the "lay of the land" as it were. How life survived before 1967, I'll never know.
Again, not an excuse. but it goes with the saying, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" ... they have to teach themselves.
And if you're right - if it IS indeed karmic payback - right effin' on.
And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....
Point-Counterpoint.
Hi there...
While you and I both happened to mention Edward R. Murrow...my comments were not in response to your post. I saw and understood the points you made and my posted comment really was not to debate your response. :)
Edward Morrow ...
Just has that kind of staying power, eh?
Good ... because I was really confused, initially. :)
And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....
Nice post
I've been writing a fake blog of Katie Couric for a while now, and while I'm no fan, I've come to admire her (in a way). Journalism as a whole has gone down in the past several years--she didn't create the situation, but she's certainly not helping.
One of my editors suggested I write about the "skit" she did sending up Dan Rather and his coat of many possibilities, and I did. But my heart wasn't in it. I agreed with her: he had it coming.
Here's the post, if interested: http://www.newsgroper.com/katie-couric/2007/11/15/coats-uggs-hip-yo/
The funny thing is...
She seems to spend most of the video genuinely obsessing over her collar the same way.
This is an amusing distraction, but in the end she has a long, long way to go before she ever gains the kind of stature and authority Rather (let alone Cronkite and Murrow) had, and then gets unceremoniously dumped by CBS in her own turn. Methinks it won't take 30 years this time.
someone inside
i am in the business...and i must say, after seeing both videoes i saw nothing out of the ordinary...anchors, reporters are always obsessed with their appearance...making sure their hair, make-up (men and women), lighting and camera angles are just right...they notice if they have more/less air-time than a colleague and for reporters they are always pushing for the lead story in the newscast..."selling" their story as a better story than the other reporters...
the news business has gone very downhill from murrow's days in the sense that the quality that is put out there is disappointing, but when you look at how many different places we can get the story we want, that the 6 o'clock news isn't as relevant as it was in his day...
Katie Couric is a hottie
thats all Ive got to say about that...
yuck to Rather...
