Fergie, "Blender" Woman of the Year

As 2007 winds down, it's that time of year for self-reflection, for looking back to see how far you've come, and for looking forward toward your goals and dreams. But, most important, it's the time of year for "Person of the Year" awards and "Best of" lists! Yay! As reported in Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. this week, Blender magazine has named Fergie as its Woman of the Year.

Yes, Stacy Ferguson is woman of the year. It's a music magazine — what did you expect, women who work toward eliminating global warming or world hunger? No, they chose a big girl who doesn't cry. Except she did cry during the interview with Blender when they told her she won. Heck, Fergie cried when she won the Teen Choice Award earlier this year! And she admits in the interview that she cries all the time, even when watching Nip/Tuck.

Fergie has had three excellent reasons to cry in 2007: "London Bridges," "Glamorous" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" were all Billboard No. 1 songs. And she had another two good reasons to cry with "Fergalicious" peaking at No. 2 and "Clumsy" at No. 5. And overall she has had one stupendous reason to shed a tear of joy, with The Dutchess debuting at No. 3 in September 2006 — and nearly one year to the day later the album was still No. 2. Whoa. That's so impressive, I need a tissue to dab my own eyes!

When people suggest that it's merely teenage sales that drive those numbers up, it's impossible to refute the assertion, as it's known that youth sales in the pop genre drives all sales numbers. However, the album/CD remained in the top 10 for the entire year! And it had spikes within the top 5. So that means that either every single kid this side of Pluto (R.I.P. Pluto) owns the album or someone other than teens was buying this CD. Believe me, I have heard the album bumping, thumping, and floating out of car sound systems of folks who haven't been in the youth category in quite some time. Her album will be one of those great albums for many, many people. You know — someone will put it on years from now, and an entire room will have a collective trip down memory lane.

Certainly Fergie has her critics and detractors, but I think she's pretty darn entertaining. It seems that the refrain from Clumsy might just be true:

"Can't help it, the girl can't help it"

"You got me trippin, stumblin, flippin, fumblin, clumsy 'cause I'm fallin in love" — Fergie at her pop best. Simple lyrics and easy to dance to. Heh. Dick Clark and American Bandstand would be proud!

Of course, I am no authority on music, but I know that I like what I like, and for this year in pop music, Fergie has no rival.

    Sad

This whole post just makes me sad.

    ....

Heh. When it comes to Fergie there seems to be a lot of tears.

    Ugh, tears of nausea.

    Ugh, tears of nausea.

It's sad that the music industry still supports tastless "music" like this.

Have they learned anything from the boyband days?

    Agreed

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who is not thrilled with this designation. I'm not sure what to do with Fergie (naughty implications aside). All I can think of when I see her is "she was on Kids Incorporated."

Patient: There's like this longing ... this pull. I mean, does that make me, you know, like, some kind of...?

    Maeby: Homosexual.

Tobias: Maeby, please. She's right, though, you probably are a homosexual.

    Sigh.

The weird thing is...Blender named M.I.A.'s Kala the album of the year. Why not pick her? Music that's actually about something. Go figure.

    As usual

i'm late to the party in reading this but i'm completely cool with blender's selection. it's not artist of the year, or female performer of the year, not best female vocal, not best female album. if it was any of those things i'd agree that it's a shady choice. but i can get behind "woman of the year" because this chick released 5 songs from ONE album and all of the songs were top 5 hits and better! the woman has done something that no other artist male or female has done this year. actually in quite a few years! maybe there's no accounting for the general public's taste in music but damn i'm giving the girl her props! she put out a pop album and it delivered over and over again. maybe it will be a one album wonder, who knows but the dutchess is a hell of a pop record. it's not insightful or "meaningful" but it's pop music! it's suppose to be FUN lighthearted and catchy. if fergie's a one hit wonder then so be it but that doesn't take away from the impact of this album for this year. And btw that Clumsy pop-up video is fo' real TIGHT! LOL.

    I completely agree with you...

She was amazing at Bumbershoot in Seattle this year and blew people away in Houston a few years with the Black Eyed Peas. Both of which I witnessed.

I can see why people give her shit, but the girl's got a set of pipes and knows how to make pop tunes. The Dutchess is arguably one of the catchiest, pop albums of the year. Give her some credit.

And I wouldn't feel right not mentioning that her cameo as a lesbian in Planet Terror put an immediate smile on my face.

    ehh, i dunno

ehh, i dunno. woman of the year....musically? But other than her, you've got the  usuals like Bey, A. Keys, J. Hud, Winehouse, Rihanna, to name a few. I think i would've picked Rihanna....maybe. But even so, i would rather not see the usuals.

I have to say that I like "Clumsy"....now. It had to grow on me.

    hmmm...

Lets see woman of the year...yeah she has had a good year but...I'm sorry I think more people should watch alanis morissette singing my humps....cas lets face it...she showed us ....its not the lyrics or the meaning behind the song that counts these days....its a good back beat.

If Fergie is "woman of the year"

you can henceforth consider me an ex-lesbian. It just couldn't be worth it.

    tight's picture

    Huh?

i've scratched my head raw trying to figure out what this comment means and i still have no clue. what does this comment mean? what's not worth it? she's woman of the year for blender magazine. what does that have to do with lesbians, ex ones or current ones?
