Christina Aguilera takes on the Rolling Stones

When I first heard that Christina Aguilera was going to be singing a duet with Mick Jagger in Shine a Light, the new Martin Scorsese documentary about the Rolling Stones that premieres on Friday, I immediately wondered, "Why Christina?"

I felt a little better about my own confusion when I read that Stones guitarist Keith Richards was confused as well. At the live performance when the footage for the documentary was filmed, Richards apparently thought Christina was just some young female fan that had gotten through security and onto the stage!

But I imagine that with Keith Richards' youthful and not so youthful indulgences, many things in life are now rather confusing for him. So learning of his confusion didn't help me justify my own.

Anyway, the band only invited three guest artists, and Christina was one of them; Jack White and Buddy Guy were the others. The generational and musical style differences between the Stones and Aguilera are what really threw me. So I set out to find the answer to “Why Christina?” but I haven't succeeded yet.

What's sinking in, however, is that the question is probably more like, “Hey, why not, Christina? She's good!” Mick Jagger has been quoted as saying, "Christina Aguilera was great, very professional, very sexy and a lovely singer." Hmm, OK. I agree completely — well, on the sexy and lovely singer part.

Considering that the Rolling Stones have been together 46 years (whoa!) and that Mick Jagger is a 64-year-old lead singer of an arguably iconic rock band, I'm thinking that inviting Christina Aguilera to join them on stage was a brilliant idea! She's a young, accomplished performer with a great voice who can hold her own when taking the stage with these legends. Hey, maybe she gives the Stones some current street cred!

The movie opens this Friday and is getting decent reviews. It's not a movie I'd normally rush out to see, but having Christina performing onstage with these guys may push me into the movie ticket line. You can go here to watch a clip of Christina and Mick Jagger's duet, “Live With Me.”

    HHHmmm I still don't know.....

As much as I love Christina I still don't know if I would pay to see this. Just the thought of watching Mic Jagger  on stage would make me not want to see it. I give The Stones credit for lasting as long as they have BUT its time to get the rocking chairs out and just call it a day for them. To me the only thing that would really make the movie worth while would be watching Mic collapses on stage. LOL. This is probably the only thing I wont ever see Christina in. Not till it comes on cable at lease.

    Christina

As far as I am concerned, Christina could be performing with a brick wall and I'd go see her. She's absolutely fabulous, and I'm actually quite intrigued to see what she sounds like alongside Mick Jagger.

    .....

Is that sort of like being okay with Bette Porter's duet with the jail wall in S1 of The L Word?

    carolinagrrrl's picture

    Hah!!

I had not even thought about that, but perhaps my subconcious did!

Lord knows I'm okay with both. Christina and Bette can do (virtually) no wrong! :)

    What a combo

"The generational and musical style differences between the Stones and Aguilera are what really threw me. "

Okay, Roc is this a polite way of saying that the whole thing seems lecherous?!  These men are in their 60s and she's what 26? Is that why you were confused? LOL They probably have grandkids her age! And I'm not surprised that Keith Richards didn't recognize her or know her. He probably doesn't recognize himself. Christina is hot and I bet she rocks the house with these geezers. Not that there's anything wrong with being a geezer LOL

    It's not the first time

A geezer and a hot young thang have shared the stage. I remember Pink and Steven Tyler's duet "Misery" from her M!zzundaztood album. But I didn't notice the generational thing so much there because their styles are fairly similar. In other words, Pink knows how to rock. Not to disparage Christina's talent, they're just different. The Christina/Mick pairing does strike me as odd, and I think it is the style rather than age that makes me scratch my head.

Yeah, It made more sense after I wrapped my brain around the fact that the concert footage was filmed in 2006 and that Christina had a hot new album that year and her "Ain't No Other Man" was chart topping. But with the release of the movie two years later (now!) I really didn't get why Christina was the choice for the duet when I first became aware of her involvement. She's a pretty big singer and has the pipes to scream past all those guitar-hero solos, I guess:)

    Ain't No Other Band

I saw the movie the other night. I'm a huge Stones fan (anyone who thinks they're getting 'too old' obviously hasn't seen Jagger in action lately) and not normally too fond of guest appearances on the Stones own material, but Aguilera was enjoyable.

"Live with Me" is a pretty sleazy song and she did a good job bringing a slightly different context to it.

As for Keith's remark - he often pulls the 'I didn't know what was going on, maaan' spiel. If he'd thought she was a fan, going by previous behaviour, he would have responded quite differently.

    Stones!

Yeah, the Stones are awsome. Like AC/DC they are true performers where age will never stop them! Though I do think their pairing with Christina is a little odd!

    Totally rule !!!

And their one-time collaboration with Christina doesn't strike me as odd at all. And she did a great job even though I'm not really a big fan of hers. Hers and Mick's (yes, that MicK, not Mic...) voices blended in fantastically so credit where credit's due on all.
