Judi Dench and other Bond girls

The ultimate Bond girl was recently seen working the back streets and alleys of London, and man, what a dame. Wait, that didn't come out quite right, did it? Let me try this again. Dame Judi Dench was recently spotted filming the new Bond movie on location in London. Dench will be reprising her role for the sixth time as M, the boss of James Bond and the head of Military Intelligence, section 6, better known as MI6 to Bond enthusiasts. It's the British Secret Intelligence Service, so Dench as the fictional figurehead is perfect — her intelligence is no secret, and neither is her presence or value on screen.

Dench first appeared as M in the 1995 Bond release GoldenEye. I was never much of a fan of the Bond franchise, though even as a kid I was a huge car fiend. To me, Bond was simply a lovely Aston Martin. As I got older, he was a lovely Aston Martin with lovely women either trying to kill him or be saved by him. But the presence of Dench instantly upgraded the tired franchise. Though the other Bond women come and go, M has been the most consistent woman in Bond's life, and he has a real affection for her. Well, if you want to call it that. She tells him what to do, and he tries to do it without getting killed, killing too many people (especially innocent ones), embarrassing his country, or making M so angry that she'll fire him.

Here are the recent pictures of Dench on the set:

We can see that M (as well as Ms. Dench) looks great in black:

And let's face it, you can't be the head of anything too important without a black briefcase. Accessories are a must.

Hey, wait a minute — that's not 007!

The movie at this time is simply referred to as Bond 22 because it will be the 22nd installment of the official Bond franchise (there are several unofficial Bond releases). The new film will star Daniel Craig as 007, just like Casino Royale (I loved that film), as well as French actor Mathieu Amalric as the primary villain.

And it was just announced this week that Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko will play Bond's leading lady in the film.

There was some speculation that Gemma Arterton (St. Trinian's) would have that role, but it looks like she will play another MI6 agent. I wonder if she will be a 00 agent? (Those are the agents with a Licence to Kill without prior chain of command approval.)

The Bond franchise is far from Shakespeare, but having Dench in the cast has made the movies much more enjoyable to me. Frankly, watching things blow up or watching the world teeter on full destruction or watching back-room black-market arms trading can get rather tedious. But watching Dame Judi as M, even for just a few minutes, is worth the price of admission. The film is due for release in November this year.

    Bond Longevity

I love Bond, not just because he has the best gadgets and the best looking girls, but because my father and I bonded over watching Bond (and Clint Eastwood westerns...an entirely different discussion).  Who knew that as I grew older, we secretly watched for the same reasons.

While the attitude to women has prgressed somewhat, the fact that it is done in such a campy style has allowed them to get away with the sexism. And lets face it, who wouldn't want to bed a woman like Pussy Galore?

I think Bond is improving in the sexism department. Dench, in all her glory, signified the start of the trend. I remember thinking that adding Michelle Yeoh was also a huge improvement.  Lets hope Gemma Arterton is allowed to continue that by being a very competent agent.

Casino Royale was a great addition to the franchise. I really enjoyed Pierce Brosnan and didn't think I could enjoy Daniel Craig more. Surprise. The guy was great.  I'm looking forward to Bond 22 and can't wait to see what he drives, who he beds and how he beats the latest dastardly world domination obsessed villain.

They told us you can only live twice, well Bond has proven that you can live at least 22 times.

Bond is awesome... nice blog entry. Always want news about the Bond movies and the girls. Daniel Craig is a great Bond and I am glad the franchise is re-energized. I am excited for "Bond 22" this November. www.eyeslikealeopard.com

    Sultry European beauties!

I'm glad to see that Bond seems to be returning to casting the mysterious and lovely European beauties in leading roles, I love (some) American actresses but I still can't erase from my mind the horrible choices that were Denise Richardson and Halle Berry who both managed to ruin the respective Bond movies they were in.

I hope this new Bond girl has some acting chops besides just being a pretty face because the talented and gorgeous Eva Green set the bar awfully high in Casino Royale.

    Don't like Daniel Craig...

As a long-time Bond fan I was saddened to realize that I couldn't stand Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. I hated it. In the past when I've seen Daniel Craig in movies, I've neither liked, nor disliked him, or noticed him, really, but Casino Royale had me cringing in the worst kind of way. As a long-time fan of Dame Judi Dench this makes me even sadder, I have *loved* the latest ones with her and Pierce Brosnan, but I'll probably just stick with my DVDs until they get a new Bond. Maybe I'll rent the Daniel Craig ones later, so I can fast-forward when I feel the need...

    Judi Dench = Gorgeous!

Best move the Bond series made was casting Judi Dench as M. She brought the depth the character originally lacked.

To anybody out there that's a Dame Judi Dench fan, I recommend you rent/buy on DVD the play Macbeth. It stars Ian McKellen in the title role and Madam Dench as his manipulative wife. It's simply brilliant.

    Gemma Arterton

I am actually pleased Gemma Arterton isn't going to be a Bond Girl, I hope she gets a chance to kick some ass.

I should point out that my straight(ish) friend had a dirty dream about Gemma Arterton after we saw St Trinians.
