Beyoncé and Tina to duet on the Grammys

Not many of us even have idols anymore. And for those of us who do still respect our elders and their accomplishments and try to emulate all that is positive about our idols, we don't always get to meet them. And even if we do meet them, we don't usually get to honor them in any public way. And even if we do get to honor them in a public way, they don't come out of retirement to express their appreciation of our worship. So that's why the announcement that Beyoncé Knowles and Tina Turner will duet at the upcoming Grammy Awards presentation made me one "Proud Mary." Well, my name is not Mary, but I am proud. OK, not proud, but excited!

Beyoncé has made it clear that she grew up adoring Tina Turner. Here's her 2005 Kennedy Center tribute performance (please, feel free to ignore all political figures seated next to Tina):

Beyoncé has her detractors, but I'm just not one of them. To me she is a a "true entertainer" in the classic sense. Beyoncé is a show-must-go-on style performer, and when she commits to a performance, the audience is guaranteed to get her very best. She dances and sings her audiences into a frenzy. She learned that well from Tina Turner.

Turner's reputation was built on her live performances, but the woman has a fine voice. She spent a large part of her early performing life in a marriage and partnership with Ike Turner. The two formed the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Ike controlled the group and Tina. Tina's life during that turbulent time has been well chronicled in her autobiography I, Tina.

Her story was so powerful it was turned into the film What's Love Got to Do With It, which of course gave us Angela Bassett looking as fine as fine can be on screen. Yes, I realize that I just went off on a tangent! Anyway, regardless of what was happening in Tina Turner's personal life during those years, she still found a way to give herself completely to her audiences through her live performances.

Here's Ike and Tina's "Proud Mary":

After she fled from the abuse and control of Ike Turner, basically broke with no manager and no agent, Tina got right back up on the stage and moved on and moved past her past. The story would be triumphant enough if she had just survived, but Tina actually thrived after she walked away from Ike in 1976. Ike died in December at the age of 76, and there may be some real symbolism in that number.

Tina has made no formal statement regarding his death. Articles quoted a statement from Tina's spokeswoman: "Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today. She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made." And that ended any additional press over that portion of her life.

So the Grammy duet is much less about Beyoncé and much more about Tina Turner. Turner is 68 years old and retired from live performing in 2000. The Grammys are scheduled for Feb. 10, and the striking writers will not impact the broadcast of the show. Thank goodness. I'm actually not one to watch awards shows, but for a peek at a Tina Turner performance, I'll tune in.

Yay for Tina!(Ich bin die erste! )

It's good that Tina will be performing.

As for Beyonce', I think she's highly overrated...just not my cup of tea.

Tina Turner is a Rock Goddess!!

I have been lucky enough to see some amazing preformers come through town, but none of them have topped Tina Turner's concert.

    NONE!

    She is simply the best!

    Grammys

I've got a love/hate relationship with Beyonce...and when I try to figure out why, I keep coming back to the distinction between being a singer and an entertainer.

Beyonce's an alright singer...but she's probably one of the best female entertainers out right now. I mean, I tried to think of someone who could do "Proud Mary" like Tina used to...and I couldn't think of anyone else.

All that aside, I can't wait for the Grammys. WGA writers can participate, so all we need now is a great host *cough*Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert*cough*.

    Tina and Beyonce duet?

Ughhh! Tina has a rock soul voice. I just don't see Beyonce performing any of her songs. I don't even want to watch her attempt it either. Tina's my gurl! No one tops her!

    ....

Beyonce is not in possession of a magical voice, there are certainly better singers and Turner's voice is so distinctive it's impossible to even compare the two, but Knowles does bring an unmistakable positive energy to her performances. She is an entertainer more than a singer, imo. Tina Turner in her prime was said to be on a whole other level but that's not a slam on Knowles. There's a reason Tina Turner is Tina Turner:) and she's churned it out nearly 50 years! I do not know this first hand but it's my understanding that Ike and Tina Turner would play some small dingy smokey club one night and then a grand mega-arena stage two nights later and could set both venues on fire. On that scale I do think Knowles can compare. She could entertain at a very small venue and also on a much larger stage and venue Not all current "performers" can make that leap or transition. It seems that work ethic-wise, Knowles never takes a night off. And in that way, she gets my respect and apparently Tina Turner's, too and that's a heck of lot more telling than what I think of her. Heh.

    TINA! TINA! TINA!!

Rock Goddess indeed! Check my profile out and you'll see Tina's my girl!!! She's awesome! Spectacular!!! She Rocks!!!! Ok, i'll quit now, I think everyone's got the picture. As per Beyonce, I've said it several times before and I'll say it again - she's one of the hardest working women in the business and I admire her for that immensely. My only problem with her is the media frenzy that's just always "in your face" and she cannot be blamed for it but it's just too much for me. But she works hard, she's got no drama going on, she manages her personal life with grace, I've never heard anything negative about her - people have always proclaimed she's a beautiful person within and out. I respect and admire that. It's so much more than you can say for so many others. Roc I agree with this article whole-heartedly. It would seem as if you plucked everything that you wrote out of my head (looking around for hidden cameras and gonna get a brain-scan to find that chip you must have implanted). I have a write up to do on her and if I do it now, people will accuse me of plagerism (shaking my head at you). I am a happy camper (or Proud Mary as u put it). Totally happy with this blog.

    Post Grammy...comment....well...

Was Tina all that and a big grab bag of chips or what? That's just not fair to still have the voice, the moves, the stage presence? Goodness. It also made me love Beyonce even more. She seemed so genuinely happy to be there with Turner...

    There's No Other Way

When it comes to Tina (the magnificent, the most awesome, ever perfect, yada... u get the point.. but I just can't help it when it comes to Tina Turner), there's just no other way for it to be done.

As per Beyonce, I really really love everything about her, she works her a$$ off - just can't take the media frenzy.

Hey!  And how bout that dress B wore to the show itself.  I just totally, totally loved the way she toned it down.  It was a perfect dress.  It was like she was sending a message to the media to just chill a bit.

Rock On Roc ... Rock On!
