News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Women are still shut out of late night

NBC has unofficially announced the new Late Night host to succeed Conan O'Brien in 2009, and (surprise) it's not a woman. Jimmy Fallon has signed on to be O'Brien's replacement, while Conan will move up to 11:35 p.m. to replace Jay Leno, whose contract is expiring. Looks like this means NBC will be continuing the grand tradition of male hosts in their late-night lineup. Now if you would all grab your calculators, let's see what this brings our tally of females currently in late-night TV to: One.

That honor goes to Chelsea Handler, who has a 30-minute talk show on E!.

Handler is the only woman in television to host a night-time talk show at this time. A rare honor, Handler joins a very short list alongside Joan Rivers as being the only female comics to host a late-night show. If we take out our trusty calculators again and add these figures together, that brings our grand total to two female late-night talk show hosts. Ever. In the history of television. Two.

For whatever reason, networks seem to think that women are more funny to more people when the sun is out. Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres have both won multiple Emmy awards for their daytime talk shows and have an enormous audience base stretching across all demographics, yet their shows never air before dinner time.

Both Rosie's 1998–2001 talk show and Ellen's current talk show follow the same standard late-night format (opening monologues, live audiences, chatty band leaders, couches, celebrities, music) but neither woman would likely be considered for anything other than daytime.

O'Donnell and DeGeneres' shows didn't achieve success just because they are likable women in morning television. Other women have tried the same formula and failed (RIP: The Megan Mullally Show, The Bonnie Hunt Show and The Roseanne Show). Rosie and Ellen have had successful shows because millions of people find them funny — proving once again (sigh) that women can be as hilarious as men.

So what is it about the female formula that has yet to transcend to late-night time slots? The only reason I can think of is that Rosie and Ellen came across as too safe (back when her talk show was on the air) or too sweet, respectively (See: "Queen of Nice" and Iggygate). Perhaps they were/are not biting enough with their comedic commentary on politics and people in the public eye.

Granted, once Rosie took the helm at The View she was anything but safe. Viewers (and I was definitely one of them) tuned in each day to find out what she would say next. But prior to that, The Rosie O'Donnell Show didn't take on political humor or mock celebrities in the news. Based on both her shows, I can only imagine that if Rosie was a late-night host (love her or loathe her) the ratings she would bring in would be huge, and isn't that what TV is all about?

If both Rosie and Ellen are out of the picture, who else would deliver what the networks are looking for in a late-night host? Here are a few suggestions:

Kathy Griffin

Sure, she's on the D-list now, but Kathy has proven herself through her gig as a red-carpet commentator, in her candid stand-up routines and in her own reality show. She clearly has a no-holds-barred attitude when it comes to celebrities. Get this woman her own talk show!

Sarah Silverman

Not only would I like to see Silverman as a late-night host because she is hilarious, but also because I think it would be so awesome to see her beat her boyfriend (Jimmy Kimmel) in the ratings.

Amy Sedaris

A favorite guest of David Letterman, Sedaris has enough talk show experience to finally sit behind the desk. She could also do segments on how to throw amazing parties.

Wanda Sykes

If you haven't already, watch her on Curb Your Enthusiasm and then you'll know why she would be perfect.

So what do you think? Who would you like to see host a late night talk show?

    Kathy Griffin...

...is the funniest woman alive. She DEFINITELY needs her own talk-show. I can't wait for the next season of My Life on the D-List starts.

Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth.

Fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words; they are perspectives.

    the fallen's picture

    Kathy rules

but it might be a little rough to book guests. Most celebrities are incapable of laughing at themselves. Silverman might have to water herself down to keep from getting in too much trouble with the big wigs, and I'd hate to see that. Wanda sounds like a great choice to me. I'll take any and all of the above however before Jimmy Fallon.
    JaxHavok69's picture

truer words were never spoken :]

god if kathy griffin and sarah silverman got their own late night talk shows, i'd probably break out into song and dance with happiness on the streets :D haha <3

Women-headed shows seen as for women

Think about it - the demographic that Ellen, the View, Oprah, and all the other daytime shows cater to is mostly female. Most men have jobs during the day, and while most women do too, most people without jobs during the day are women.

Late-night, on the other hand, is aimed at least at both and I'd suspect more at men than women. They probably think men won't watch a female host, or that a female host won't be funny in a male way.

Silly. But to be fair, I don't watch late-night so I don't really care.

    GertandBernie's picture

    WANDA SYKES.

I would watch her in anything. Ugh, I'm so upset they named Jimmy Fallon... I love SNL, but I never liked him. I have a feeling that he's gonna be a lot like Carson Daly (ugh)... an unfunny jerk.
    Pyewacket's picture

My pick would be Jane Lynch.

Seriously.  While all the above-mentioned women are good possible choices...I think Jane can do it all...the funny, the slap-stick, the smart-ass, the quick-wit...you name it.  She always steals whatever scenes she is in...smart and funny is such a great combo and I think she would easily win over her audience.

I don't know if she would even want a gig like that but my vote is for Jane!

    :)

I Don't Know Where To Begin

I think Sarah Silverman is waaaaay funnier than her boyfriend, jimmy kimmel (not to mention super hot!). I think Amy Sedaris should have her own sketch comedy late night show.  She's  graphic and dirty and fabulous!! But she's awesome at character sketches. I think Kathy Griffin would be AWESOME! I love her no holds barred attitude, plus now she has an emmy =)
    esjen's picture

    all of these women...

    are perfect for the job!

ellen, chelsea, sarah, kathy, wanda, and wow amy sedaris! now that would prolly be too quirky for some people haha but fucking hilarious

i was thinking, why not tina fey? when i heard jimmy fallon...why?!!

    FUNNY WOMEN ARE HOT!

    Through_the_Rye's picture

    It should be Wanda Sykes,

It should be Wanda Sykes, she is the best thing about "The New Adventures of Old Christine." Or it should be Julie Goldman.

Jimmy Fallon...ugh. That guy doesn't have a funny bone in his body.

    carson daly

i gotta give him props for being a good interviewer, but that's cuz he's been in that biz for so long..

BUT WHY does he do monologues? you are NOT funny!

    Batman's picture

    gotta love sedaris

I think all those ladies are funny, I would totally watch anything with them.

    I would absolutely adore

I would absolutely adore watching Wanda or Kathy on a talk show.. As for Sarah Silverman, I think she's funny, I just don't know if I could handle her for an hour. Stacey London kinda has a talk show.. on friday nights on TLC.. i don't think that counts though, and it might be cancelled already, haha.

anywho, I can't stand Jimmy Fallon. I used to sorta kinda think he was funny but then I watched him speak at my friend's school and he was a total drunk (or stoned...or both) asshole. He was there to be funny but he was too belligerent to be much of anything.

    jill-bennett-fan's picture

    sarah silverman is awesome

she would be a great late night host

and i love chelsea  handlers show and her little nugget

    What about Whoopi?

Didn’t Whoopi Goldberg have a late night spot once upon a time?
    edge829's picture

    Yes she did

Whoopi did have a late night show and I loved it!  But it wasn't the usual format.  She usually had just one guest each show.  Too bad it was so short lived.
    missmojorisin90's picture

    Amy <3<3

I love ALL of those women... of course, no one's mentioned my favorite funny lady... TRACY ULLMAN. Granted, she has her own show, but wouldn't she be great on late night tv?
    sydneyB's picture

    Wanda Sykes would be my

Wanda Sykes would be my pick. She's funny, intelligent, and has a great base. Plus she's a WOC and I would love to see any kind of diversity on the late night circuit.

But i have to do a shout out for Bridget McManus. I mean isn't BWB pretty much a lesbian themed talk show already? She would be much better than Sarah S (despite all the comparisons which I really don't get because I think Bridget is way funnier).

    explorergal's picture

    The answer is.....

I love Kathy Griffin and Wanda Sykes for sure.

My vote would go to our AE team of Bridget and Karman.  Can you imagine them on the couch ALA Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon?

    Mcmurphy's picture

    Stephanie Miller

hosted a short-lived late night talk show in 1995. The syndicated show called The Stephanie Miller Show was cancelled after just 13 weeks. I never saw her TV show but currently she hosts a progressive radio show that is hilarious.
    LyleMasaki's picture

    I actually remember watching that...

I don't remember it too well at this point, but after her radio show debuted I was reminded about watching that one (IIRC, at the time I was happy to see an alternative choice to Arsineo Hall).
    amillar7's picture

    How bout...

Tegan and Sara? I just caught a show from those guys...bitches had me cracking UP!

But they'd probably be pretty unamused with having to spend ten minutes talking to Shia LeBeauoffff about some asshole Transformers sequel.  Probably just better to eliminate all the "guests" and just have them bicker for an hour.  I'd LOVE that.

But yeah, Jimmy Effin' Fallon?  That guy...about as funny as a blood spattered brick wall.

    jennifer from pittsburgh's picture

    Fallon is an A*Hat

When I first heard that Jimmy Fallon was taking over Late Night I thought, he'll alienate every guest with his endless mugging. He lacks the graciousness, however tenuous it might be with some hosts, to allow the guest to shine. Actually, I've always loved Letterman for his ability to embrace his inner dweeb who just sits back and throws appropriate zingers. Let the guest talk, dig their own hole, and then toss in some compost once they're deep enough. Being patient for a joke isn't one of Fallon's better qualities.
That all said, I really wish they'd given it to Griffin. Who cares if she could book 'stars'? Her idle conversation with a hair stylist is more amusing than most anything we get from, say, Leno...that purveyor of the obvious in the most obvious way he can muster.
    Penny_Lane's picture

    agreed.

Jimmy Fallon is a complete ass hat and might rank up there as the 2nd biggest tool on late night tv. Second only to Carson Daly.
    jennifer from pittsburgh's picture

    Penny

Oh Penny, thank you for sharing my hate :) Plus, my puppy's nickname is Penny, but it's a Seinfeld reference.

    Jane Lynch would be AMAZING.

    As would Sarah Silverman <3

    beffy's picture

    I don't know why I don't

I don't know why I don't see it as that big of a deal....late night is for men and daytime is for women- Oprah and Ellen rule!

But, yeah, ew, I hate Jimmy Fallon.

    charbonneau's picture

    How Do Ratings Compare?

Just wondering...do the guys get huge ratings at night compared with the women during the day? Leno used to be funny when he did his on-the-street quizzes but the rest of his show is so main stream its become pablum. O'Brien is freakish, scary and not funny, so that should kill the ratings once he takes over from Leno. Letterman can be really funny when he gets his ego out of the way. The best man is Craig Ferguson, but he has so watered down his natural Scots sarcasm to fit American tv that you could hardly call him humorous anymore (Still loving his interview with JBeals).

Which leads me to ask...Who watches late night tv and why is it considered important? In the early days, there were three networks, one late night show, and Jack Paar and Johnny Carson were breakthrough artists. Since then, all the hosts have followed a very narrow path and no one has pushed the boundaries. So boring...especially when real political satire is now so off limits on mainstream US tv.

IMHO the only woman who could likely break through is Tracy Ullman, simply because she is not American and can completely transform herself into any(thing)(one) necessary to make a talk show really work.

    my007's picture

It’s all about money, of course

    Leno: 7.2 million viewers

    Letterman: 5.5 million

    O'Brien: 2.84 million

    Ferguson: 2.24 million

    Kimmel: 1.74 million

These are, I believe, the numbers of the first shows after the strike and also their highs of the season. And it’s probably all about the ratings and those are all about the advertisers and those are all about men between the ages of 18 and 49 or preferably between 18 and 35. So when will this change? When the whole society will change… When women get paid as much as men, when they’re considered important buyers, when they’re the ones advertisers want to reach… So let's go out there and make a lot of money :))

    Kathy G., Ellen or WANDA!

Kathy G., Ellen or WANDA! Love them all, and they definitely deserve late night talk shows. Though I'll honestly say I do not care for Sarah Silverman. Some of her jokes are funny but most of them are too vulgar and offensive for my taste. She still hasn't recovered from what she said about Brittany Spears' children at the VMA's, in my mind. But yeah, any other of the other women are real stand-up stand-ups and I'd love to see them on the late night shows I never watch because they're on too late.
    karumammi's picture

    I love Sarah Silverman

I would looooooooove to see more of Silverman. I would probably watch her even if she didnt say anything. Though i must admit pretty much anything she says is gold. So my vote is obviously for Sarah :)

    Jimmy Fallon??

Isn't he that guy who laughs at all his own jokes? I vote for Sarah Silverman, she is a very funny lady and very smart. I would also vote for Jane Lynch, she has the smarts and wit to carry a chat show. Jimmy Fallon though, to my mind doesn't have any of these skills unfortunately.

    Bonnie Hunt

Has her show even aired? I thought it was set to debut in the fall? I was looking forward to it.

Thanks Lyle-I read in a few

Thanks Lyle-I read in a few sites it was indefinitely "on hold"/ did some more follow up and some sites say she is still on for the Fall................. lets keep our fingers crossed that it does happen. I love Bonnie Hunt - the woman charm and wit to spare!

i love love love love love chelsea handler. she is hilarious, and verrrry sexy. have you read "my horizontal life"?! but if i had to pick someone else, i'd say sarah silverman, wanda sykes, or even leisha hailey after the L word ends.

I just found a new excuse to cut a night out short. "Yeah, That Two AM Breakfast Burrito sounds really tempting buuuut I think I'm gonna go home and watch paint dry." What a STALE CHEESE DOODLE! On the plus side I don't have to choose between Conan or Craig Ferguson anymore. Why not Rachel Harris, Rachel Dratch or even any random Rachel who shows up with a head shot!

    Oh my god!!!!

Amy Sedaris is David Sedaris' brother?? (I just read the Amazon link.) How did I not know that???!!!!

    Not Only But Also

    Amy M's picture

    I nominate Rachel Harris

I'd vote for Wanda Sykes or Tina Fey. I don't think Sarah Silverman would be a natural host because her comedy seems to be based on her performance/being in the spotlight, which wouldn't translate well to hosting a guest-based show.  Kathy Griffin might be good except for the fact her act is based on trashing celebrities so I agree booking would be a problem.

I think Rachel Harris would be good (the blonde with the glasses that's been on The Daily Show, Notes From the Underbelly, any of those "mid-level comedians for people with short attention spans I-Love the 80's/Best Week Ever" VH1 shows.

    Chelsea...

Although I would love to see Wanda Sykes grilling a guest, I can't say that I truly care since Chelsea Handler is the funniest thing I've seen on t.v. in a long time.  But give the poor woman an hour long show!

    Sista's picture

    Whoopee for Whoopi!

I second the nomination of Whoopi to host a late-night show. She's intelligent, witty, asks great questions, etc., and would be an asset to the time slot.

As for Kathy Griffin, ain't gonna happen, folks. She may be funny, but the networks would be shooting themselves in the foot, since the majority of celebrities wouldn't book a show within 10 feet of her. There's something to be said about being funny and having something to say, other than "dirty dishing" on celebrities in an effort to get off the D-list. It's old, it's tired, and it lacks substance.

I'm voting for Whoopi (and Hillary!)

    Ghost_Gamer's picture

    Wanda Sykes

Honestly, and don't shoot me for this:

    1. Griffin is too much of a cornball to be taken semi-seriously. Funny yes, but for late night? No.

    2. Silverman is too crazy and her gags are directed too specifically at a certain set. Funny? Yes, but perhaps not to the older crowd, many of whom watch late night.

    3. I'm not well enough versed in Amy Sedaris work to give a reasonable critique.

    4. Wanda Sykes has proven she has the ability to appeal her humor to large crowds, and can tone down the crassness when she wants to. She's mature, and that's necessary for late night. It's a totally different brand of comedy. She's no nonsense when she needs to be, and makes that funny. I would love to see Wanda interview Paris Hilton. Seriously, can you imagine what a roast that would be? Also, it would be very nice to see a woman of color in a position like that, especially when she has the talent to back it up.

Though a slightly different medium, let's not forget Rosie hosted VH1 Stand Up Spotlight for quite a while if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, I think she's become too polarizing to remain interesting in the public eye. Ellen could, I think, host late night very well, but she's so successful in daytime TV it would be a waste to take her off that spot.

late night is better with bridget

    bridget....obvious choice!!!

shes hillarious and random and already a fantastic interviewer! She may have to break her no boys allowed rule, but how awesome would it be having pillow fights with some of the hottest women in hollywood!

not to mention bridget isn't too hard on the eyes...everyone gay and straight will fall in love with her.

If i had to choose, i vote bridget mcmanus!

Women are still shut out of late night

While I LOVE all of these options, who I would really love to see host is Janeane Garofalo. She is hilarious and deeply intelligent and unafraid initiate one thing that is truly lacking on most television: meaningful and relevant conversation (i.e. NOT about Paris, Nicole or Lindsay).
    lunakiss's picture

    Janeane and Wanda

Janeane Garofalo would be great. I miss her. What is she doing? Wanda Skyes would be great too. I wouldn't be surprised if Wanda does get signed for late-night. She could bring in the viewers and the money.
