Don't touch Keira Knightley's breasts

Keira Knightley is standing up for women with small boobs everywhere. The actress is taking a stand against having images from her new film altered in order to form a more ideal (read: intangible) composition of perfection. Knightley is refusing digital enhancement of her breasts in publicity photos for her upcoming movie The Duchess.

Knightley is no stranger to criticisms of her body. Her weight has often been a topic of debate among the media because some believe her to be far too skinny. More recently, Knightley received criticism of photographs from her previous film King Arthur. The actress had given studio executives the green light to give her pictures a photographic boob job. Take a look at the before and after:

Hmm, looks like there is definitely more than just a couple of graphic Kleenexes stuffed beneath those leather straps. Knightley does admit that at the time when the studio approached her for permission to do this she replied, “OK fine, I honestly don’t give a s---.’" The back lash that followed proved to have been a learning experience for Knightley who is currently well, giving a s---.

This time around, the actress is just saying no to digital enhancement, despite the studios demand for her to fill out her corseted gown. Knightely is instead keeping it real and representing the flatter chested 18th century aristocrat. The smaller breasted woman is an endangered species in these period films. I can’t even recall the last movie of that genre that I saw where the woman’s cupeth didn’t overfloweth. Excessive cleavage is seemingly as mandatory prop as the horse and carriage.

A spokesperson for Knightley said, "She has insisted that her figure stay in its natural state. She is proud of her body and doesn't want it altered." Let the corset burning begin!

This is not the first time an actress’s bosom has been enhanced through the magic of Photoshop. As Dorothy Snarker told us, an image on the Warner Bros website promoting the IMAX 3D version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix had Emma Watson experiencing the wonders of puberty right before our scandalized eyes.

We knew better than to think that this was the naughty magic of Harry Potter did this, but rather the naughty studio trying to subtly market their film. The image, after much outrage, was promptly taken down after the studio said it was "accidentally" posted. (And of course we believe it was an accident. I am sure that someone in the graphics department wasn’t paying attention and, oops, gave Watson a new cup size. Then he or she probably tripped over his or her mouse cord and fell face first onto the keyboard, inadvertently launching an advertising publication for an IMAX movie whose entire draw is taking films and making them well, bigger. This sort of thing must happen all the time.)

Knightley’s stand against the studio by showing pride in her body is a huge step in the direction of Photoshop control. If any progress is to be made in curtailing airbrushing beyond the basic necessities of say, red eye reduction (because no one wants their celebrities looking like demons), then more big named stars need to take this same type of stand. Whether or not Knightley privately wishes some things were different about her body (and who among us doesn’t have that list), she is proud and honest about the body that she has. Now that’s what I call a real woman.

What do you think: Should limits be placed on how much images in the media can be altered?

Dear Stunt Double and Kulhaha

Keira is sitting right next to me and is very distressed that you are both fanning the flames of deceit. (Whats that Keira? ....Oh of course, sugarpie.) - Oh Sorry Keira wants to go for a walk on the beach so I have to go.

Go Keira!

*resists urge to say "But I want to touch her breasts!" on the grounds that celebrity-molestation is wrong*

Good for KK. She's a beautiful woman; she doesn't need breast "enhancement," particularly of the laughable sort that occurred on the King Arthur poster, and it's about time she realized that.

Watson

I actually heard that they actually shaved downs Watson's breasts for the posters to make them less overtly sexual. Which is just as not cool of course.

But

But Keira is way too skinny. She has Anorexia. She is beautiful but I liked her more when she looked normal as in "The Jacket" movie. It's confusing! She is skinny, like movies' makers want her to be, and she is defending her flat chest!!!

It is possible for a woman

It is possible for a woman to be very slim without being anorexic, just as it is possible for a woman to be plump without being an overeater. There are many body types, though I must say that women tend to be more generous and understanding toward ampler women than they are toward those who are thin. It's not fair, though, to judge anyone for the way they look, especially when you don't know the person.
ice cream's picture

Thank you!

Thank you for saying that!

I remember experiences I had in school where being skinny apparently gave free license for anyone to throw the word 'anorexic' around, or to grab at my wrists or poke at my ribs to emphasize the point, not to mention commenting on how much food I ate - At what point would any of that have been ok if I had been a heavier build?

*Deep breaths* Ok, nipping that rant in the bud...

On to Ms Knightley: Yay! I appreciate seeing...no wait, that sounds wrong...I appreciate there being more representation of the less chestily-endowed, makes me feel more reassured =D

SummerGrey's picture

i second to that

yes, it's primarily about body type and secondarily choosing the type of food one eats that determines how your body shapes up.

It's also genetic and cultural. In Asia especially in thailand, korea and china, thin is the norm. it's hard to find women above size 2. but they eat heartily, believe me.

WHat im saying is--we don't know Keira Knightly's eating habits. But we do know that she looks good. It's not fair to presume something that we are not sure about and as for me she looks hoooooottttt. Her chest is just right-- that again is a personal preference. Size A's/minimum B's are really sexy (i may be the  only lesbian who feels that way but wth ;-)  )

Good on you, Keira

Good for her!  I think she looks fabulous as she is and I think women with smaller breasts is quite the turn on.

Go Keira

As a proud flat chested girl I think it's so cool what Keira is doing, and because she's looked up to by alot of women hopefully this will make a bigger statement that women don't need to have big breasts to look sexy

And I think that in general airbrushing is so stupid, and nowadays it's not even subtle, sometimes it goes so far you can't even tell who the person is. So, go keira!

cowgal's picture

Awww!

i think the before pix are better!

Brutal_Romance's picture

and celebrities should give a sh*t about airbrushing!

there should be a rule book somewhere telling those scandelous photoshop editors what are and what are they not supposed to do, cuz they are taking it a tad too far.

i for one is horrified to know that they did anythin to Watson's breasts, sexualizing a childrens movie is wrong from any angle. im glad that KK is taking a stand against this, more celebrities should join in, and i suggest that the cast of the new coming movie "The Women" should be the first in the picket line.

I think it's important to

I think it's important to embrace your body. I've learned to love my body. I've never had small breasts. Well, not since puberty, but we all have to embrace things about our body and learn to love them.

Effie Fernandes's picture

My thinking is like Keira I love her 4 that'.

Love Effie Ferns! Love 1 and let love

!

Yay for flat chests! Keira is lovely and good on her and hopefully there are more women confidant enough with their bodies to do the same.

But if something can be digitally enhanced, then it will be.

Levels

Digital enhancement of her breast is wrong to begin with, but in context of this particular film, it is down right stupid!  In the 18th century, small was good.

Good for her

And for all people really:) Is it wrong that when I read the title the first thing I thought was "What breasts"?

hmm...

Wow, little bit of a difference in the posters (haha)...I love her! No enhancement needed! :)

Boob obsession...

Keira did right.

I'm honestly fed up with the whole boob obsession that our culture is drenched in. It doesn't matter wether it's about small breasts or big breasts...

If you have small breasts, then you're not sexy enough and they have to be enhanced.

If your breasts are naturally large (like mine), you're parents will try to bullshit you into believing that you'll automatically get sexually harassed if you as much as dare show up in a public space without a bra underneath your top or t-shirt. Well, duh... I've been doing it for almost two years and the only people I've taken crap from because of it are my parents.

Boobs are personal, not public property.

Everyone should have the right to say "yes", and the right to say "no". Marriage should be based on love and relationships that work, not tradition

ChocolateSprinkles's picture

Emma Watson

In the Harry Potter one didn't they make her breasts smaller? I heard that as well, and if you look at the pictures the one on the left (small breasts) is the more photoshopped/fine-tuned of the two. Just take a look at the make-up.  Unless they removed make-up and made things fuzzier for the final image, isn't the one on the RIGHT the original?

I may be wrong..

:)

Gillian's picture

i don't get it!!

i don't understand why everyone thinks boobs sell. maybe in the porn industry, i get that they do there...

i like keira knightley cos she's a good actress, not because of her boobs. in the king arthur pictures, i'd never have noticed until seeing the two together like that. tbh, i think she looks better in the non-enhanced one.

i like harry potter cos... well, i just do, okay?! i don't need a reason!! no, it's not because they gave emma/hermione boobs! not that she didn't already have them, she's a developing young woman, for god's sake!! although having said that, i can't remember if it was the latest film, or the one before, or even the one before, i thought, woah, she's all grown up, she's got boobs!!

but that's probably because we really have seen those actors grow up in the films. i mean look at daniel/harry, his voice broke and he got a nicely toned body he could get naked in public with, lol!
so what i'm saying is, if you see actors grow up in films, or even on tv, you're going to notice them developing.

anyways, if i see a trailer or poster for a film, i'm thinking, wow that looks good, maybe i'll go see that. i'm not thinking, wow look at the boobs on her, must go see it.

the studios (and magazines and all that lot) won't ever stop doing it, though, no matter what we say we want to see.

Go Keira!

I love this woman and I love her small breasts. And btw, who likes the big ones? It's not even fashionable nowadays. Naturalness - that's cool, and screw those photoshop maniacs in the show-biz.
