Anna Faris becomes a Playmate

Is there an actress that you would see in any film, no matter what it’s about? Like literally no matter what — aliens could be attacking earth in search of the galaxy’s next pop star and you would see this movie just because insert actress name was in the movie. This is exactly how I feel about Anna Faris. I would watch her in anything.

Most of us got our first introduction to Faris in the Scary Movie films — if there was any reason at all to keep coming back for second and thirds of this trilogy, she was more than likely that reason. Faris can take the most mundane line in a movie and make it hilarious through her delivery and facial expressions. Now she is starring in the new comedy, The House Bunny, which premieres in August. Here is a peak at the trailer:

Faris plays a Playboy Playmate that has gone out to pasture at the ripe old age of 27. She is evicted from the Playboy Mansion and heads out into the world armed with only her talents as a Playboy Centerfold, which is not exactly an arsenal. Somewhere along the line she ends up finding her place as den mother to a gaggle of geeky sorority girls that could use her expertise to make them cool. (I smell makeover montage.) How do we know they are not cool? Well let’s take a look:

Before Playmate intervention (as seen in the trailer):

Glasses? Check.
Clothing that is not sewed onto their bodies? T-shirts and flannel, check.
No detection of any roused cheeks or glossy lips? None at all.
Back brace? Uh, sure.

After Playmate intervention:

Long flowing hair? Check.
Stiletto heels? The higher the cooler.
More skin than clothes? Are you blind? Check.
Bold colors? Is fuschia bright enough for you?
Dangly heart shaped earrings? Got ‘em.
Bedazzled back brace? Ah, so much better.

Um, is that American Idol runner up, Katherine McPhee? Why is she acting and not singing? I thought she wanted to be a singer. Isn’t that why I texted my vote for her and paid those standard text messaging rates? All this time I thought she wanted to make bad music and here she is starring opposite — wait is that Rumer Willis? Spawn of Bruce and Demi? OK I started out wanting to see this movie because of my appreciation of Anna Faris and now I think I want to see this movie purely because it seems to be a jumping board for a new breed of Hollywood actresses that have secretly always wanted to act.

If you can’t get enough of a Faris fix from The House Bunny, you can also find her bringing her character to life (so to speak) in the August issue of Playboy when she graces its pages. Now before you run off to your favorite local Playboy retailer just know that you will get to see Faris but not all of Faris. She will be leaving some things to the imagination, but don’t let that stop you from buying it; I hear the articles in that magazine are very good.

Do you think you will be checking out The House Bunny?

Befuddled much

...I... don't think I like the message this movie is sending out there.
(it's not a parody, right? ok, that makes it worse)

And something must be wrong with me, but I found those girls fairly attractive BEFORE the makeover montage. :/

Do not want. (to see.)

ice cream's picture

me too

don't worry i also found the girls extremely attractive before the makeover.

jazz.june's picture

yeah, ditto... and

yeah, ditto...

and somewhat less attractive afterwards. But the second part could just be me.

alex's picture

heck yes

im a sucker for movies like this. and anna faris is like the next amy sedaris.
Janay's picture

Yes!

I would see ANYTHING with Anna Faris in it, even this lol.......Doesn't seem like a great movie, but it seems good enough ya know. Maybe that's a bit harsh cause come to think of it I've only seen movies like this where a cool guy was showing nerdy guys how to be cool so this might be pretty neat. Plus I recognize all the girls in this movie and like them on everything they do. And I'm excited to see Katherine McPhee's performance!
guiltyone58's picture

ok, so Katherine McPhee is

ok, so Katherine McPhee is totally cute and Anna Faris is funny... i'll probably end up going to see this...

plus, my dad is friends with the hispanic guy in the trailer, so it's gotta be a funny flick....? lol

heartless romantic's picture

Anna Faris is really

Anna Faris is really underrated as an actress. I mean, Smiley Face was the funniest movie I've seen in, I don't know, probably the last five, six years.
Laline's picture

so cool

I really like Anna Faris, she is sooooo funny, I mean, I even downloaded that FORGIVEN song she sings in a movie that I don't know the name in English, but is about a guy that was fat and then became all good-looking...
Batman's picture

Just Friends...

that song was the best part of the film. lol.

is more than saying sorryyyyyyy!

Most likely going to suck.

Starring Anna, Kat D, and Tim Minear alum Emma Stone.  The standard get a make over to get guys plot.  I'm going to see for the cast only.  I would have rather it be a female Revenge of the Nerds where they don't change and win over everyone on their own terms.

Films are made for a lot of

Films are made for a lot of different reasons, this one would be pure entertaiment! I will absolutely see it as I´m a fan of Scary movie films especially brenda but oh well it seems like fun. Thanks! or else I wouldn´t of known

Celina's picture

Kat Dennings

Kat Dennings is one of the reasons I would watch this movie. I like funny Anna Faris movies even if they're kind of dumb. I really can't wait to see Kat with choppy short black hair and piercings. It'll be a good laugh I'll have.

I Caught fire's picture

Me neither

Kat looks so awesome in the movie. She's so fantastic!!! Only reason I'm seeing it, too. She needs to be in more movies!
Brunette's picture

Faris

I saw this tralier some weeks ago and so far, funny. Yes just cos Faris is in that movie I will see, no  matter how bad the movie is going to be, but Faris makes it all worth it. I just really hope that all the fun parts were NOT in the trailer..hehe ya I will see it :)
Mayhem's picture

Rumer Willis? Really?

I'm sorry, but I really don't see Rumer as anything but living off mommy and daddy's fame.. much like Paris Hilton.   And I happen to think she's not that pretty....

And I apologize to all the Katherine McPhee lovers out there...but no.  There only reason she probably got this part was because of her producer husband.

But I'll probably end up seeing it anyways, cause I like Anna Farris and Kat D.

Samantha's picture

Katharine

I would totally agree with you about Katharine, IF her husband was producing or if his production company as involved in the movie. But he has nothing to do with the movie.

I do think she was hired because she's hot.

Penny Winterr's picture

Um, Sorry

The only movie I've seen with Anna Faris was Smiley Face, and I barely--barely--made it through it.  It was crap and I didn't think she was all that funny.  Maybe I could see the potential she has, but this kind of movie is not something I'd be interested in seeing.  Perhaps in the end she's going to realize that the girls were just fine as they were and they didn't have to tart themselves up for men, or maybe I'm reading something into the movie that's not there: but it sure looks like it's there.

Pass.

OMG, I love Ana Faris!  I

OMG, I love Ana Faris!  I really think that she's underrated and tends to get coined as just another ditzy blond, when the truth is that she's really funny and has great comedic timing.  Also this movie looks pretty good.  I do have a problem with the overall message, however.  Its really annoying that girls always have to be pretty in a Barbie/Playboy way, in order for them to be hollywood acceptable.  But it is good to see a female centric cast, and I think that red-headed actress is HOT!
Alex's picture

Anna Faris!

This looks like a funny movie and Anna Faris is hilarious! :D
Effie Fernandes's picture

I didn't watch this trailer yet.

Love Effie Ferns! Love 1 and let love

Kisses!!@@

Just saw beautiful girls and thought to my self of memorising the name of the trailer to watch this soon. lol...

Pass

This is a good example of the kind of movie I hate. There's no way you can get me to watch it.

Am I the only one who saw this blog title and actually thought she was going to pose for Playboy for real?

How disappointing

I'll defo go see it :P

Lor.'s picture

I totally agree

With the first couple of comments.
Much more attractive before they were attacked by lipgloss and the likes.

I'm going to see this sheerly because Kat Dennings is in it. And she's hott! (Anyone else watch Raising Dad back in the day?)
Becky C.'s picture

Adorable

She is adorable. And this is one of those cases where I think I will have to pickup Playboy--and I do that from time to time--and never for the articles:) ~Becky
colorshow's picture

No thanks

Anna Faris is talented, but this movie appears to be the same formulaic crap I've seen a million times over.  I hate going to a movie and not being entertained. Do I really want to pay 10 bucks to predict every next plot move???

I'd have a better time watching a movie I have already seen....at least my mind can wonder for free. :)

Why this on After Ellen

I've got a beef to pick with the editors of this website. How did this article win an ok from you? This film does not remotely touch on lesbianism. The author's justification for recommending we all see the sexist piece of shite is that she thinks the actress is funny and nice to look at. After Ellen: Please do not pander to the adolescent dreams of young gay women who don't realize the serious harm prizing women according to sick societal norms will result in.

Hi watching, The blog is

Hi watching, The blog is the only non-lesbian exclusive content on the site, where we cover everything pop culture. This is an upcoming movie with some funny women we like. We haven't seen the movie so we can only tell you what we know and what might be worth seeing it for. We don't know how good it will be, but we will make sure you know about it in case you want to see it. Trish

Sort of an answer

Thanks for responding Trish.

What I gather from your comment is that

1) there is either no filtering of blog postings whatsoever and AE is thus free from all responsibilty for this post

OR

2) you will allow female-derogatory content in the blog section on AE as long as it is about "some funnny women we like."

The whole drift of the article suggests that what makes this film "funny" is an ex-playboy bunny teaching nerds* how to attract men by teaching them how to act and look in conformance to male fantasies rather than being themselves.

nerd: in this context a woman of exceptional qualities that are not valued by our current body-obsessed culture.

If AE does have the opportunity to REFUSE blog submissions, including this one was a bad call. If it doesn't, I can't wait until the submissions from non-feminist and anti-gay contributors clog the website.

Our bloggers pick the topics

Our bloggers pick the topics they want to write about, and I actually had this on a list of suggested topics, as it's a film with a cast largely made up of women. Reese dealt with the film's topic in a funny light. We certainly will not accept any anti-feminist or anti-gay content for the site. She was simply commenting on the film's idea of a nerd vs. a Playmate (a small twist on a very common theme, we know!). We could certainly dissect the feminist logistics regarding Playboy and any subsequent pieces of pop culture surrounding it, but we're just here to share some entertainment news in a snarky fun way.
Nothing's picture

Really?

This blog is the only non-lesbian exclusive content on the site?  Why is it then that I read many, many, many non-lesbian blogs on AE?  I'm as confused as the original poster as to why so much stupid entertainment is considered appropriate for AfterEllen, a website that doesn't just cater to women, but lesbian and bisexual women.  Your answer certainly doesn't begin to approach the question at hand.  Maybe this young actress is on the hot list for some women, but this insipid movie should not be something that is highlighted on this website.  There are many smart women who run this website, maybe it would be prudent to begin thinking in terms of your audience and pass on some of the female entertainment news that is determined to set the feminist movement back 50 years.

Kinda reminds me of

Sydney White. Except instead of the Snow White storyline, you have a playmate gone old and a group of girls gets the makeover..not the guys. I'm still really on the fence about seeing this. I probably will just so I can drool over the girls BEFORE they get the makeover : ]

What can I say? I'm easy

Morgan's picture

OH come onnnn..

It's gonna be hilarious! Really, I don't care if it doesn't exactly scream EMPOWERING THE LESBIANS AND FEMINISTS, because no one's going to watch this and think of it as anything more than a funny movie. If this were some kind of dramatic film about women not being pretty enough the way they are, and it could actually sway people in a wrong direction? Then yes. I would be disgusted and worried.
Anyway, I rarely like mainstream comedy movies (Wild Hogs? Don't Mess With the Zohan? Ew.) But this looks okay, and I think Anna Faris will make it great.

So calm down!

watching's picture

Morgan's advice that those against her view calm down

I don't do calm when lesbians disrespect themselves and other women---especially when given the lame excuse that it's all in the name of entertainment. Explain tol me what is funny about college girls thinking they need playboy bunny makeovers to get men. But it's only light entertainment?   Movies are the norm senders for the younger generation.

She annoys the hell out of

She annoys the hell out of me, she was funny in the Scary movie films but she is irritating to look at i'm sorry to say. She will fit right in, in this role.

Looks like Poop

I remember seeing the promo for this film in the theater and I just guffawed at the idea that they were serious. This looks like shit, and maybe some 13 year old boys would love to see this, but not me. I don't like any of the messages that it's sending, many of which is... People won't like you for you, smack a ton of makeup on and put on as little clothes as possible and boys will like you. Yuck! TsC
Sour's picture

Might not be all that bad...

I'm going to give this movie the benefit of the doubt. The synopsis on ComingSoon.net says:

Plot Summary: In Columbia Pictures' comedy "The House Bunny," Anna Faris charms as Shelley Darlington, a Playboy Bunny who teaches an awkward sorority about the opposite sex – only to learn that what boys really like is what's on the inside.

Shelley is living a carefree life until a rival gets her tossed out of the Playboy Mansion. With nowhere to go, fate delivers her to the sorority girls from Zeta Alpha Zeta. Unless they can sign a new pledge class, the seven socially clueless women will lose their house to the scheming girls of Phi Iota Mu. In order to accomplish their goal, they need Shelley to teach them the ways of makeup and men; at the same time, Shelley needs some of what the Zetas have – a sense of individuality. The combination leads all the girls to learn how to stop pretending and start being themselves.

This isn't the most original plot idea ever, but it does make me feel better about the movie. I'd see it for the cast anyway, though. I like Emma Stone (I miss Drive!), Kat McPhee and Anna Faris.

i'll definitely see it,

i'll definitely see it, because she's funny as hell, but not in theatres. i'll just get pissed off at the amount of people laughing for all the wrong reasons. i'll sit through some awful movies for certain people though. mainly, milla jovovich and clea duvall. but most of their movies are pretty good anyways.

so much shouting,

so much laughter

i love her in all the scary movie installments. just the sight of her in any scene can cause me to bust out into giggles; she was definitely perfectly cast in those movies and plays her part to tongue-in-cheek perfection.
