And the Emmy might possibly go to

Have you ever wondered which TV shows came thisclose to getting an Emmy nomination and never did? No? Well regardless, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (aka the people that give out the Emmy awards) are now letting us know who those losers shows will be.

Recently they announced the official Top Ten Finalists for both Outstanding Drama Series as well as Outstanding Comedy Series — with no official mention of the actors or actresses, supporting or otherwise, that may be in contention. Who knew Emmy could be such a tease?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Academy released this information: “In an unprecedented move designed to head off the kind of cyberspace leaks that have played havoc with the nomination process the past two years.”

Really? There has been internet “havoc”? And by "havoc" do they mean public speculation? Forums on discussion? Emmy buzz? I thought these were all good things that would inevitably lead to getting people to actually sit through three hours of Emmy award distribution. Clearly I know nothing about award shows.

Here is a peak at the nominees that may get nominated, or may not get nominated (in case you are a "glass half-empty" kind of person.)

Top 10 Comedy Series Semi-Finalists

Curb Your Enthusiasm
Entourage
Family Guy
Flight of the Conchords
The Office
Pushing Daisies
30 Rock
Two and a Half Men
Ugly Betty
Weeds

Out of this list, only five will go on the hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Emmy Finalist — or something like that. If I had to guess who those lucky final five would be, my money would be on 30 Rock (because Tina Fey is amazing and deserves all the Emmy gold they can dish out), The Office, Weeds, Ugly Betty and Two and Half Men (because they always seem to nominate this show. Does anyone out there watch this? Seriously, I’m asking.)

Top 10 Drama Series Semi-Finalists

Boston Legal
Damages
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Grey’s Anatomy
House
Lost
Mad Men
The Tudors
The Wire

My guesses for this batch would be Damages, Dexter, Mad Men and honestly, I haven’t seen any of these other shows so I won’t even attempt to speculate. (I have never even seen Grey’s Anatomy despite all the juicy lesbian action I’ve been hearing about. I have no excuses. I don’t deserve my DVR).

So what do you think of think of these contenders? Who are your top five faves? And which of your favorite shows didn’t get any Emmy love?

Grey's Anatomy is

Grey's Anatomy is definitley my favorite.

Katherine Heigl AND Sara Ramirez? Yes please.

Lost has been so amazing

Lost has been so amazing this season. It seems that show never gets the recognition it deserves, so I'm hoping that will change this year. 30 Rock rules the comedy category in my opinion, although I do love me some Scrubs, but alas, that's not even nominated for being nominated or however you wanna put it:)
alexc9's picture

my guess...

for best drama nominees:

weeds
Dexter
Lost
Mad Men
The Wire

it's a tough call, though. greys is an audience favorite (though pretty dull, if you ask me), and both house and friday night lights are fantastic shows. that being said, weeds, dexter and the wire are massive critic and audience faves. the wire deserves far more credit than it will ever receive, and weeds and dexter are brilliant in a way that greys never will be (though im not complaining about greys as of late - more torres!!).

oh, and i watch two and a half men. i always thought it looked stupid, and i hate charlie sheen (esp in bowling shirts), but it's actually pretty consistently hysterical.

I only

I only watch Grey's Anatomy and House, so those two should definitely be in there for me. I've also heard good things about Damages, so that one should be in there aswell. I'll start watching that soon. As far as the comedy goes, I'm all for 30 Rock to win, it's just brilliant! Also Ugly Betty and Family Guy (yes, I like family guy:p) should be nominated. Those are all the shows I watch, so I can't really be fair on who should win... but definitely 30 Rock!!!

Two and Half Men = crap

Can't believe some people actually like and watch it! The intro alone does my head in - "men, men, men, menly men". Argh, now I have it in my head.

The only one out of the whole lot that I actually watch is Ugly Betty lol so I guess yay for that.

Oh yeah! How come Scrubs wasn't nominated? They deserve it much more than Two and Half Men. In my humble opinion, the latter should be cancelled and wiped from our screens (and memory) for ever ^^ Who's with me?

Sandra Oh

She definitely deserves an Emmy. She did an AMAZING job in that episode ("The Becoming") and does an amazing job each episode. As for Grey's as a whole - eh, others are more deserving of an Emmy.

As for comedy, Ugly Betty all the way. So hilarious, refreshing, and just different from all the rest of the shows. (I don't watch 30 Rock, sorry, I know, but I still love Tina Fey!)

Unfortunately, I have watched and do watch reruns of Two and a Half Men. I don't have cable and it's also the only thing on from 6-7 besides news (and half the time I'd rather watch the news), but most of the time the TV is only on for background noise. Yet, I do find myself laughing every now and then. *Shrugs*

For once

if only Sci-fi could get some props and Mary could score a nod for BSG.  She has been amazing the entire run - especially this season.

It's bad enough the show didn't make the list but please, oh please, can't Mary see a nod!!

what i'd like:

I'm going to list the five I'd like to see nominated, rather than the five I think will be nominated.  Exclamation points mark the shows I'd love to see win...though they never will.  No offense to shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage or Damages that I think are good, but I just don't happen to watch/never got into.  I didn't have cable for a while, and have never had HBO.  Quite honestly, there is too much tv to catch up on.  my favs:

The Office
Pushing Daisies (!)
30 Rock
Ugly Betty
Weeds

Friday Night Lights (!)
Grey’s Anatomy
House
Mad Men
The Tudors

I dig your TV choices

I don't think Pushing Daisies gets enough credit and I love that show.

I must say I tried to watch the Tutors and just couldn't get into it- so i'd replace that with Dexter- but other than that I enjoy your TV viewing habits.

damnhippie's picture

why, thanks

I agree on Pushing Daisies.  I think it's so creative and hilarious and all around fun.  As for the Tudors, I'm not that much into either, it was my reluctant 5th show.  But I'm not too into any of the other 5, so, something had to get thrown up there.
cosmiccowgirl's picture

BL Boo MM Yay!

I can't critique most of the choices because I don't watch the shows, but as someone who used to watch Boston Legal and stopped because it got so stupid, I have to ask, WTF? I don't even understand why that show is still on, much less why it gets awards.

YAAAAY for Mary McDonnell!!! If she makes the top 5, I think that would make her the only BSG nomination, maybe ever?? I will totally watch the Emmies (for possibly the first time ever) if she is nominated.

Alex-Blaine-Layder's picture

Where's In Treatment?

Lost, Grey's, Boston Legal, House, etc... all these badly written and dumbed-down network shows get a gong before In Treatment? There's something gravely wrong with this industry.

bethy1241's picture

30 FTW

I don't watch most of the shows that are finalists. I love 30 Rock and Tina Fey and hope both are nominated. I think that some shows are nominated more because they are recognizable both in terms of cast and ratings, rather then because they are actually the best shows. For example, Boston Legal and Two and a Half Men.
xadiz's picture

DAMAGES!

That show is unreal. The first season left me screaming. It deserves an emmy.
alesse's picture

Totally agree!

I totally agree. This was the best new show. Glenn Close was amazing and the plot was complicated and intelligent. It's rare for me to be surprised by plot twists...I can usually see them coming a mile away. This show kept me guessing and thinking the whole way through.

Im a woman OBSESSED

I know isnt Damages AMAZING? Ive never been more sucked in by a television show -G-damn that writers strike for prolonging the 2nd season's premiere on us!
ClassicChic's picture

Hmmm

I'm obsessed with The Office so I HOPE it wins for best comedy. That goes for Jenna Fischer winning best supporting actress. Tina Fey for best actress (comedy). Chandra Wilson best actress Drama (she tears it up EVERY week). Carrie Fischer (she was hilarious on her guest appearence in 30 Rock).

Why is Sara Chalke not nominated !?! She is hilarious on Scrubs and has been consistently funny every season.

I'm shocked, shocked!, I

I'm shocked, shocked!, I say, that The Closer isn't short listed in the drama department.
I blame Bush for two reasons: 1) It makes no sense, just like his policies - and - 2) He's an easy unpopular lame duck target. If you think about it (but not for too long because that's antithetical to the Bush credo) it makes perfect sense that some sort of White House conspiracy is afoot to further demonize, oh, I don't know, cogent story telling? Yes! That's it!
Other than that I'm rooting for 30 Rock to take best comedy. Sure, I like Pushing Daisies, but sometimes the bright colors they shoot in give me mild seizures. Although that could've just been the expired medication I picked up at the outlet pharmacy. Either way, I suddenly feel disoriented.
