Halle Barry, Eva Longoria and Laura Linney are begging you not to vote

In honor of the vice presidential debate last night, I thought I would fan the political flame of interest a little further by drawing your attention to the newest voter awareness public service announcement.

A galaxy of stars turned out for a PSA that urges young people not to vote because, after all, who cares about Darfur, gay rights, terrorism, global warming? Ah, I can sense that a lot of hands are going up out there, and for that you are true patriots and our country thanks you. (Those who didn’t put their hands up can see me after class.)

So what kinds of stars are in this PSA? Probably just a few you may have heard of. You know, like: Halle Berry, Laura Linney, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Longoria, Ellen DeGeneres, Natalie Portman and Demi Moore. (Not to mention some of our favorite actors, like Leonardo DiCaprio, Forest Whitaker and Jamie Foxx.)

If you dare even to think about not voting in this upcoming election, think again. This star-studded cast clearly all have degrees in mind trickery because they are about to dazzle you with some serious reverse psychology.

After watching that, you were probably either a) amused and touched that celebrities can come together and deliver such an important message as to tell us to vote or b) irritated and insulted that celebrities think that just by coming together they can convince us to vote. Either way, this PSA has affected voter registration. Within the first hour of the video posting, 10,000 people registered to vote, so there are people who are definitely listening.

Whether or not you decide to vote because Halle Berry looks amazing in that video or because Sarah Silverman made you laugh out loud, or because it’s your right and you planned on doing it no matter who showed up in that PSA, it is crucial that you do it. But I’m sure you know that by now.

So get online, register and, you know, vote.

My answer is option A. I

My answer is option A. I watched this vid yesterday and sent it to like 10 friends. Sarah Silverman and Jonah Hill totally steal it. Its cool that they want to promote a positive message. Im a sucker, I know, but I love it.

Whenever Natalie Portman

Whenever Natalie Portman came on screen my heart jumped. :)

They really should do PSAs like that in the UK...

I want to vote!

... But I'm in Scotland so that kinda makes me ineligible :(

Courteney Cox made it for me: "I had 5 friends..."

Like herpes ... for positive

That was fantastic. I've been registered and I'm definitely voting.

Like sapphogal said, Sarah and Jonah stole it but Dustin Hoffman was great as always. And also, like Crayon said, Natalie Portman makes my insides happy. <33

This is great

My Mother used to say about almost everything, "every little bit helps.". I'm not insulted at all, I'm thrilled that they are using what they have to encourage the unmotivated masses to get involed in this election and take some responsibilty for electing a leader for this country. This is the most important election of my life, maybe of all of our lives and I don't care if they resort to sending flatbed trucks full of hookers and Red Bull if that's what it takes to reach the 18-24 year old maket!

condescending much?

did anyone else think that was soooo condescending?  um, yes I do know that I have to register, not an idiot.  and I do have at least five friends, thanks.
Batman's picture

lmao...yea...that was kinda, ugh.

I'm mean...I know I have to register... I'm not stupid... I even registered like 6 dead people cause...well, I need to vote more than once... cause, you know, it's important...

p.s. Don't register dead people... it's not a good idea.

I agree

These kinds of commercials get on my nerves so bad. There's an almost tangible air of superiority gushing from the screen. I also have a problem calling it a PSA when it's so obviously coming from one political viewpoint (some of which I'm fully support), but that's another discussion altogether. Yeah, I'm kind of tired of these ads that imply I'm a lazy, shiftless commoner.

Shame that a over a quarter of your country are idiots, then, eh

Sixty-four percent of U.S. citizens age 18 and over voted in the 2004 presidential election ... of 197 million citizens, 72 percent (142 million) reported they were registered to vote ... those age[d] 18 to 24 had the lowest (58 percent) [registration rate]. The youngest group also had the lowest voting rate (47 percent)....

Maybe when 90% plus of your population votes or even registers, or when more than a half of the under-25s actually vote, you can bitch about "condescending" PSAs. In the meantime, maybe some people who ordinarily wouldn't give a shit might actually think about it.

Mixed feelings

I don't like the condescending tone. It's way too agressive, a total turn off. On the other hand, I find myself doing whatever Ellen tells me to do. (That's how I got on the "ONE" mailing list. DAMN HER!) Sarah Silverman was also awesome there. I don't think I'm gonna send that video to my friends... but I might watch it a couple more times.

Nice!

Props to AE for giving it the title "So and so are begging you not to vote." I was about to throw away some of my DVDs because I was mad that they didnt want me to vote.

Then I watched, and I was inspired, even though I have been registered for a while. Very cool! Yay celebrities using their adorableness and fame for a cause that is seriously important right now. (Well, always really...) Thanks for posting, AE! My friends are gonna be getting an email in a minute for this. LOVE IT!

Are you feelin' what I'm flingin'?

Lindsey's picture

I'm okay...

Okay, so maybe there was a few too many people with the "You know you have to register, right?" but it was good for the fact that I know some people who know they have to register (no, they're not stupid either) but have kept putting it off for one reason or another. (aaand, yes, maybe I sent this video to those friends...)

Overall, I thought it was very good and yeah, maybe some people do need that that parental-like nudge to realize that this stuff is happening and soon.  This gives that - just with better looking and more entertaining people than your parents. :)

Thanks for sharing!

"You can literally register

LOL. Omg, I love Sarah Silverman. She totally cracks me up, endlessly.

Compulsory

Why don't they just make voting compulsory in America?
It seems to work here in Australia (if you don't vote you have to pay a fine)
So that way every one who is old enough, has to vote!
The trick is to get them to vote for the best person for the job

~Elvis Presley~

HallyB's picture

Is that for real?

Wow, I can't imagine that you would be forced into participating. One of the best parts of the good ol' USA is the fundamental right to say, "Eff it." Don't tread on me and all that...
Ottie_oi's picture

Yeah it's for real... but

Yeah it's for real... but the fine is not enforced that strongly.

But, it's not compulsory to 'vote'.  It's compulsory to show up at a polling booth.  You can put in a blank piece of paper in you want.

That's why I like the compulsory system - most people have an opinion and when they haul themselves to a polling booth they will express it with their vote.  So you get a good cross section of society, not just the people major parties have convinced the register.

If you fundamentally don't want to vote for any of them, then don't - just keep it blank.

okay

so now I feel bad for only being in the states for 5 months and not being able to vote.. :P So I'll just send it to all the americans I know! does that make it better? (A)

Voter Registration Information By State

Regardless about how you feel about the PSA - it is important to vote in elections as we are something of a democracy.

Keep in mind that each state has its own voter registration rules, plus military and overseas voters (US citizens who live outside the United States) have a different set of rules.

For many states the voter registration deadline for the general election is rapidly approaching (to my fellow Nanooks, it's this Sunday so get to the local election office or go online - NOW!); to find out when your registration deadline is - here's a website:

worth sending on to friends

"Yeah, I'm kind of tired of these ads that imply I'm a lazy, shiftless commoner."

That's kinda strong! Actually I thought it was funny.

But a sobering statistic I read today: unmarried women represent more than 26% of eligible voters; 41% of whom DIDN'T vote in 2004. What do you reckon those numbers could do, if they all vote in 2008! Since I can't vote, being Canadian, I'm sending this to all my US friends.

does anyone who is not registered already have an attention span long enough to watch that whole PSA? I know I don't (and i'm registered.)

anyway, sarah silverman is da' [silver][wo]man!

*wondering what happened at the end*

Testify.

"you can litterally register while you're pooping --- if you have a laptop" -- fuck! haha.

I laughed out loud so many times during the PSA. I can't vote against ol' old man and hockey mom... cus I'm Canadian (YAY) but we have our own election coming up and I always vote.

I woke up on my 18th birthday to have it confirmed that Bush got in (2000) --- DAMN MY NOVEMBER BIRTH.

Go figure though: something about the PSA made me go "its been years since I listened to my Rage Against The Machine albums" haha. Dug 'em out.

Oh man I loved that PSA. I

Oh man I loved that PSA. I live in the UK, and most of the students in our uni halls threw away their registraion forms. I mean all they had to do was literally fill it out and send it off for free - but no, they don't care.

And yeh, Halle Berry was hot, but then again, when isn't she :)

The closer you get to the light, the greater your shadow becomes, but don't be afraid...

Tonker's picture

different system

Well, I think the system of having to actually actiively register to vote is partially to blame.

Here in Germany you automatically get a letter which you only have to bring along to the polling booth on election day  and that's it.

Ma-lis-a's picture

Like herpes!...but for good...

I was literally talking with my friend about needing to find a place to register to vote, and next thing I know there's a table next to us and an old lady asking if I'm registered yet.

Talk about convenience, lol.

There is no word to say how

There is no word to say how much I heart that video. I really wish I was American just to vote and hope for Obama to make it. It's going to be one hell of a day when we will finally know who wins... that's history right in front of our eyes, it's both scary and amazing. And it will have an impact on every country in this planet... you American people have the power to change a lot, hope you will make the right decision!
