Summer TV Sneak PeekSpringtime sweeps have come and gone, but don’t turn off your TV just yet. While you can expect more than your fair share of reruns, there are lots of new shows hitting the small screen this summer — and some of them are even scripted! Throw in returning favorites like The Closer, Weeds and My Boys, and it’s shaping up to be a halfway decent TV line-up for women (well, if you don’t count all the reality-show rejects leftover from the fall writers strike). Check out our guide to the good, the bad, and the WTF of summer programming. SCRIPTED SHOWS (All show times based on EST) In Plain Sight (June 1 at 10 PM on USA)
The Premise: Mary McCormack packs some major heat (oh, and she carries a gun, too) as a U.S. Marshall who relocates people into the federal witness protection program. She’s a pro at helping witnesses start new lives — the problem is she can’t seem to get her own under control. The Prediction: DVR-worthy! USA has a good track record (Monk, Psych, Burn Notice) for creating this type of cool yet quirky detective series. Now if they’d only bring back the 4400. Swingtown (June 5 at 10 PM on CBS) The Premise: In the midst of a gas crisis, unrest in the Middle East and the social and political upheaval of The Prediction: Wow, CBS is airing a show about swingers? Didn’t see that one coming. While it seems better suited for HBO or Showtime, I’m definitely intrigued by the concept — and by Molly Parker (Deadwood), who plays the wife. Fear Itself (June 5 at 10 PM on NBC)
The Premise: Each week, a different “Master of Horror” brings his or her (most likely his) thrilling tale of blood and guts to a TV near you. Stars set to appear in an episode include Cynthia Watros (Lost), Shiri Appleby (Roswell), and Elisabeth Moss (The West Wing). The Prediction: I liked this show the first time I saw it … when it was called Tales from the Crypt. I’ll probably stick with Swingtown in the 10 p.m. slot. Secret Diary of a Call Girl (June 16 at 10:30 PM on Showtime)
The Premise: My favorite companion from Dr. Who plays a different kind of companion in this hit British import based on the bestselling book. When Hannah (Billie Piper) gets done with her tedious day job as a legal secretary, she likes to slip into something a little more comfortable: her alter ego, Belle, who’s a high-class escort. The Prediction: Does it matter? Billie freakin’ Piper is in it! If that’s not enough to convince you, Showtime gave it the coveted post-Weeds time slot and decided against recasting the series for Americans after realizing how much it rocks just the way it is. The Middleman (June 16 at 8 PM on ABC Family)
The Premise: A young, struggling artist (Natalie Morales) unwittingly finds herself fighting evil aliens and comic-book-like villains at the side of Middleman, a straight-laced superhero/secret agent. The show is adapted from executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach’s graphic novels of the same name. The Prediction: I’m on the fence. As with anything inspired by a comic book, it will either be really good or really bad (there’s no in-between). This show reminds me a little of CW’s Reaper, but with a girl in the lead — so it already gets bonus points for that. Sordid Lives: The Series (July 23 at 9 PM on LOGO) The Premise: The show centers on a small-town matriarch (Rue McClanahan) and her colorful family, which includes an institutionalized, crossing-dressing son and a grandson struggling to come out of the closet. The impressive cast also features Olivia Newton-John, Bonnie Bedelia, Caroline Rhea and Margaret Cho, to name a few.The Prediction: It’s a good sign that Del Shores (the author of the play on which the series is based) is writing and directing the episodes. And you can’t lose with a cast like this. REALITY & GAME SHOWS Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search For Elle Woods(June 2 at 10 PM on MTV)
The Premise: Ten aspiring stage actresses compete to see who will take over the roles of Elle Woods. Haylie Duff hosts the Broadway-style boot camp, which follows the girls through rehearsals, dance routines and probably a few roommate squabbles. The Prediction: I don’t know about you, but I’m getting tired of all the TV talent shows. It’s like Star Search overload. Plus, Broadway tickets are expensive. If I’m dropping $100, I want a classically trained actress, not a reality-show has-been. I’ll get off the soapbox now. Gimme Sugar (June 9 at 10 PM on LOGO)
The Premise: Five friends attempt to become the youngest female promoters in L.A. by kicking off their own lesbian club night. Lots of dyke drama and processing are sure to follow. The Prediction: Sounds a little like the She-Bar/Planet subplot from The L Word, right? Count me in! I Love Money (July 13 at 9 PM on VH1)
The Premise: This game show — which should have been called I Love Fame — reunites contestants from Flavor of Love, I Love New York and Rock of Love with Brett Michaels, and then pits them against each other in a sort of Battle of the VH1 Stars. The Prediction: Pass. It was bad enough when we had to watch these reality “stars” whore it up for the cameras on their original shows. THE REST OF THE SHOWS That’s about as much speculating as I can do (sorry, the last show killed too many brain cells). Here’s a quick rundown of some other programs on the airwaves this summer: Dance Machine (June 27 at 8 PM on ABC): How many dance shows are we up to now? 2,012? Celebrity Family Feud (July 1 at 8 PM on NBC): What can I say about a D-list celeb version of Family Feud hosted by Al Roker? Yawn. America’s Greatest Dog (July 10 at 8 PM on CBS): I never quite got the whole Best in Show thing, but if you’re really into your pooch, this is the reality competition for you. High School Musical: Get in the Picture(July 20 at 8 PM on ABC): Host Nick Lachey helps young fans realize their dream to be in HSM 3? No, wait … the winner just gets a role in the music video during the end credits. Really? That’s the prize? Aim higher, kids! Cleaner (Date TBA on A& E): Details are still sketchy on the exact release date (possibly July) of this scripted drama. But Benjamin Bratt and — hold onto your hats, Battlestar fans — Grace Park are set to star. Submitted by on May 30, 2008 - 5:00pm. |

Looking forward to Gimme
Looking forward to Gimme Sugar... not that I need more dyke drama in my life
Anyone have any idea how many episodes are left to Work Out?
Billie Piper!!! Why oh why
This summer is looking better
There are a few decent shows here. I've been excited about the USA show In Plain Sight and have set my DVR for it already. I must say the show "The Middleman" looks good too.
I am so over reality shows-
What I'm trying to figure out is how I feel about the Scripted Reality shows like The Hills and Laguna Beach which is what Gimmie Sugar is based on. If it's anything like Curl Girls I'll take a pass at that show.
Check out and upload your great lesbian videos on www.tellofilms.com
Diary Of A Call girl is
Diary Of A Call girl is going to the states! Woo. I have two friends that were in it. One of them (girl) gets to snog Billie and gets far too naked for my liking! 3 series have been commissioned. I loved it.
*unlady-like
*unlady-like spasm*
why do i not have showtime? whyyyyyyy?!?!
fear itself looks kinda good, and i'm definitely watching in plain sight! mmmm....mary McCormack in those shades... :)
A few more to mention
Love The Closer. Can't wait for that return. Don't forget about Saving Grace. Another wonderful show!
Eureka is also coming back and it's a geeky fun type show.
none
But i dont even know if i'll get that show here. I have the Canadian MTV and i doubt they'll air it :(
I can't wait to see In Plain
I'm looking forward to the
Secret Diary of a Call Girl
They have already showed this show here in Sweden. Watched a couple of episodes. I love Billie Piper, but I could not get hooked on this show, for some reason... It's not bad, though... pretty watchable :)
I can't even think straight...
SDCG & Dr Who...
Secret Diary is a great series, ofcourse it helps that Billie is hot. :)
Also in the current series of Dr Who showing here ( dunno whats showing in the US) Billie has been doing some guest spots as Rose. So she will come back to you Mythical Maiden lol :)
Dr Who
After Ellen..came me!!
Yep, Billie is back in the first of a two part episode tonight on BBC1. With the Daleks I might add! Wooooh!
Now if only Martha could appear tonight as well, and she and Rose look into each others eyes and... Ooops! Sorry, thinking out loud again!
BAM FOREVER..
teehee... Martha and Rose
teehee...
Martha and Rose should totally get their 'who' on.
ps rose with a huge ass guny thingy = fraking hot.
In Plain Sight...
...is the only one I will watch for sure. Ever since the first promos started airing, I guess late last year, I have been anxiously awaiting it. I love Burn Notice and Psych so much, and I think IPS will be equally entertaining.
Only one more day to go.
A Few Good Ones
I'm really looking forward to In Plain Sight and The Middleman. I could see those being decent shows.
Secret Diaries might be okay too, probably because of Billie Piper.
But I don't see Swingtown or any of the other shows as becoming "must sees" for me.
Oh well. I guess that'll give me plenty of time to catch up on other tv.
Secret Diary of a Call Girl
Secret Diary is awesome... everyone should watch it!
the first season already aired in the UK (not from the UK so downloaded it... and my heart hole loves it). I'm looking forward to second season!!!
plus i mean, you get to see Billie Piper naked and in hot lingerie... why WOULDN't you watch it?
tis grand and sexy, and ...
drool.
that is all
Obnoxious Correction...
OK, sorry to be a nitpicker, but Hannah / Belle does not have a "day job as a legal secretary." She merely tells people that she's a "night-time legal secretary" when she doesn't want them to know she's a straight-up ho...a subtle but important difference. Take note!
Yeah. Sorry 'bout posting the most obnoxious post ever. Billie Piper rules! :)
Really???
...
No worries, mate! Hmm...I wonder...is it possible that Showtime subtly tweaked the show's storyline for American viewers, giving the lovely Hannah / Belle a non-whorish "day job?" I hope not! The British version is spot-on perfect.
(Love the bejewelled Hello Kitty 'n Crossbones, by the way!)
:D
I'm sure...
Billie Piper is not Honey to the Bee
The Middleman looks pretty good, although it could end up being terrible. I hope not. I don't like the idea of a Legally Blonde musical, and the HSM3 competition, where's the point? It's exactly like HSM2 only then the voting was for a Hannah Montana star.
I really can't stand Billie Piper. Seriously. I couldn't even watch the come pack of Dr. Who because she was in it! All I can think about when I see her is "Do you, do you, do you have a girlfriend? Can I, can I, can I have your number? You don't have a thing to lose. Do you have a minute? What is on your mind? I was just thinking we could spend some time."
Diary of a call girl
Loved it! Billie is hot ;) The reason I started watching Doctor Who, sooo happy she's meant to be back next week!!
Billie/Doctor Who
Yeah, exactly, re: last
The shows on USA...
Am looking forward to the return of "Burn Notice" on USA, and am going to check out the premiere of "In Plain Sight" tonight on USA, even though it looks and sounds suspiciously like "Saving Grace" on TNT with Holly Hunter, which sucked.
Also, don't forget the second season of "Army Wives" premieres next Sunday, June 8th, at 10 p.m. on Lifetime.
Love your name, but are you really a misanthrope, or do you actually like people?
Re: misanthrope
Wait, that's what the name means? JK.
BTW, I think IPS will be way different than Saving Grace. Check it out tonight, and let me know what you think.
I wish hollywood would stop
Totally agree...
