News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Sing along with Joss Whedon and co.

I was going to start this post off singing the praises of TV god Joss Whedon — you know, the divine creator of all that is good and holy in the Buffyverse (Vamp Willow decked out in black leather for one). But then I realized that calling him a genius on AfterEllen.com is like preaching to the choir. I might as well say women are hot. (Duh.) So, I’m going to skip the Joss love-fest and just point out the fact that the man can do it all: He turned a failed feature film into a TV show (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), a canceled TV show into a feature film (Firefly/Serenity), and me into a comic-book lover (Fray). It should be no surprise then that he’s about to break new ground once again with what has to be the first-ever “Internet miniseries event” called Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

The official site for the “supervillain musical” starring out actor Neil Patrick Harris as a mad scientist (is there any other kind?) went live this past weekend, and the trailer has already sent fangirls and boys everywhere into an online tizzy. Check out what all the buzz is about here.

That looks awe – wait for it – some, as Neil’s character, Barney (from How I Met Your Mother), would say. The teaser, of course, doesn’t give away too much. I guess we’ll have to tune in to find out if it’s as good as Buffy’s Once More with Feeling or just a way to pass the time until Dollhouse debuts in the winter. But one thing is for sure: NPH is the perfect choice for this kind of campy villain. He can sing, he can do comedy (see the HIMYM reference above), and he’s already played a doctor (paging Doogie Howser!) on TV.

The cast also includes Firefly’s Nathan Fillion as heroic Captain Hammer and Felicia Day as potential love interest Penny. Extra fan points goes to anyone who recognized the actress as Vi, one of the slayers-in-training from the last season of Buffy. Anyone? Just me? Yeah, I’m a geek.

The first installment of the three-part series premieres July 15, with Act Two and Act Three of the show following on July 17 and 19, respectively. You can watch all the webisodes for free through July 20, and then Team Whedon is hoping to make them available for download — or better yet — on DVD with tons of cool extras. My inner stalker fangirl is *squee-ing* with delight.

It’s safe to say that I’m already hooked. How about you? Are you going to sing-along to Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog?

    Im a geek also then :/

    I love Felicia Day as Vi and also in the guild :D x

    ~~~~~~~~xXx~~~~~~~~
    Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping... waiting... and though unwanted... unbidden... it will stir... open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us... guides us... passion rules us all, and we obey.
    oh yes! safe to say, i
    oh yes! safe to say, i would watch or read anything joss whedon can spew out of his genius brain. casting neil patrick harris is just the cherry on top. he's amazing, as is the rest of the cast. and oh yeah, i recognized felicia day who played vi, so you're not the only one. in fact, she was my fav potential. i loved her transition from a timid & fearful girl to a full blown kick ass slayer in the final battle. ah good times... but enough about buffy. and to counter your geekiness, she also stars, writes & produces 'the guild', a webseries about warcraft-obsessed peeps, which i love. so evidently, i might be the bigger geek now :D
    You win!
    I tip my geek hat to you. Thanks for the heads up on The Guild. Sounds interesting. I might have to check that out.
    Joss is the God of all Gods. He's Zeus.
    I have been waiting for this since Joss dropped the reference into an interview forever ago. Now I'm all giddy. The trailer is awesome, can't wait for it to start.
    I must be an uber geek too... I loved Felicia Day in Buffy. Confident Vi is genius.
    I would and will watch anything Joss touches!!
    That looks fantastic.  Love Neil Patrick Harris.  Love Nathan Fillion.  Love Joss Whedon (duh).  So, very excited.  This actually kind of looks better than Dollhouse...
    Did Barney ever say
    Did Barney ever say 'awesome' that way? He says "legen - wait for it - DARY!" But I don't recall a pause for awesome. Just plain 'ol AWESOME if I remember correctly. *shrug*
    Can't wait for this. :) 2 more weeks!!
    woops's picture
    I was thinking the same
    I was thinking the same thing. I don't remember him ever saying awesome like that . . . but I could have missed it . . .
    I am so psyched for this show!
    Ms.Anthrope's picture
    Wait for it...
    He uses the "Wait for it" catchphrase with other words and phrases, too. But "legendary" is the most used and well known. The best one is when he said "Legend...wait for it...." at the end of season two and picked up with "...dary!" at the beginning of season three. LMAO! I less-than-three Barney!
    overthemoo's picture
    Hm, I think I might have
    Hm, I think I might have heard him say it once with another word. But maybe they have dropped it since? Ah well! Yes, the s2 ender with the wait for it... was AWESOMESAUCE. :D
    smallfish444's picture
    I always remember the
    I always remember the "legen-- wait for it-- wait for it -- wait for it -- and I hope you're not lactose intolerent, because the second half of that word is-- DARY"
     But I don't remember any other word that earned such a barney-build-up.
    How did I not know about this?!
    (Am I the only lesbian on the planet that can't stand Willow?? Gimme Tara and Glory any day over Willow.)
    smallfish444's picture
    I think you might be
    I lovvvee Willow and Tara! haha Seeing as Willow would have to be my favorite character throughout the entire series, closely followed by Anya and Xander, of course. No worries though, I'm joining you in the bowing to Whedon. A Buffy fan is a Buffy fan is a Buffy fan.
    And the fact that this is going to be a musical just makes it all the more amazing.
    InXanadu's picture
    And...
    Forgot to give a proper Browncoat shout-out to Mr. Nathan Fillion who is adorable and awesome. Happy to see him on Team Whedon again.
    This looks promising
    Oh, wow! This is too funny. Neil Patrick Harris one of my favorite comedic actors, and his recent return to Harold & Kumar fsequel was absolutly brilliant. I will most likley be tuning in, given that I was such a Firefly fan back in the day..was never into the Buffy franchise, I'm afraid.
    ghostyouknow's picture
    holy frak-a-roni!!!
    i am uberly excited!!! not only does the cast look amazing (and yes i too recognized Felicia Day as Vi) but the fact thati t is a musical mixed with sci-fi goodness makes me giggly and happy all over... GEEKASM!!!
    that is all
    The Guild rocks
    I love the Guild! Felicia Day pulls off the kind of neurotic crazy so well. And the last episode was great.
    I recognized her from that before I remembered her as Vi.
    ZOMGZ!!!!1!
    haha i feel like such a fangirl, but yaaay!! this just put a massive grin on my face :D it took me a while to remember vi, and then i actually hit myself cos 'these guys are dust' was such a brilliant moment. looking forward to this! <understatement
