Ellen's coming out vs. Buffy's tragic demiseRemember those long, insufferable clip montages from the Oscars? Apparently, the Emmys do. This year, the awards show is putting the content in our hands (so if it sucks, I guess we’re to blame). You can cast your vote for “Television’s Most Memorable Moments” in the categories of drama and comedy, and the winning clips will air during the live broadcast on September 21. The ABC site lists all 40 nominees and has videos of each one to refresh your memory. You’ll find plenty of Emmy darlings, like The Sopranos and M*A*S*H, but there are also some surprises. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which never took home a major Emmy, gets the nod (and my vote) for Sarah Michelle Gellar’s “death” scene in season five’s “The Gift.” I’m hoping the producers will re-cut the clip for the broadcast because the one up now stops awkwardly short of the episode’s trademark line: “Dawn, the hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live. For me.” (*Single tear* — it gets me every time!)
The big one for us is in the comedy category. Our girl, Ellen DeGeneres, is up for her groundbreaking coming-out episode from 1997. The highlighted clip covers the funny and moving airport scene, in which Ellen tells guest star Laura Dern she’s gay over the loudspeaker.
If that’s not enough to send you to the online poll immediately, check out these other nominees with strong female leads.
There’s a special place in my heart for Candice Bergen as Murphy Brown, the smart, independent news anchor who became a single mom and wouldn’t back down from the criticism — even when it came from then Vice President Dan Quayle (you know, the guy who used to be the biggest dope in the White House).
A special chemistry shout-out goes to the clip of a young, pre-L Word Cybill Shepherd finally getting it on with her will-they-or-won’t-they partner, Bruce Willis, in Moonlighting.
As far as sexual tension goes, though, I tend to lean more toward the long overdue lip-lock between Scully and Mulder on The X-Files. (If the show were still on today, do you think they’d have some really lame nickname like “Sculder” or “Mully”?) OK, enough already with the hot women kissing dudes. There are lots of other classic and contemporary women-driven shows, ranging from I Love Lucy to Sex and the City, for your voting pleasure. The second round begins on September 9. So, log on now to check out the complete list and to see if your favorites made the cut or got dissed. And don’t forget to let us know your picks for TV’s most memorable moments. yay for Moonlightiing
My favourite show ever!
So many memorable moments to pick from.
Correction
"Sex and the City"
'Sides I'd love to vote, alas the link is broken. (call me lazy but... oh what the hell, heeere google google google...)
Thanks!
Sex IN the City? Hmm. Must be my subconscious acting up again. I need to get out more. Thanks.
Here's the link until we can get it fixed in the post:

Ellen / X-Files
As if it wasn't bad enough with the shippers and skippers and drippers and everything that they were called in the X-Files categories...
I voted for Ellen and The X-Files. I don't know if they're my most memorable moments in general, but out of the ones I could choose from they were the only specific ones I remembered at all.
Since I'm a Big Fan of...
Ellen and Buffy
I voted for them, but I think I shall go vote later (tomorrow? It seems like you can just keep voting which seems weird...) for Lucy and Cosby. That's probably my second most memorable Lucy moment, the first being Vitamitavegemin... Oh too many in that show.
I won't vote for the Xfiles because strangely enough, though I was a big Xfiles fan for a long time, I don't remember that clip at all, because it was so late and they'd lost me, along with many other fans. Boy was I surprised by the movie, not remembering that they got together!!
I didn't like that they had so many dramatic moments in the comedies. I know maybe drama is more memorable, but still, you couldn't have found a hilarious MASH clip? At least Ellen's was funny even though it was dramatic too.
The whole of that 'Ellen'
The whole of that 'Ellen' episode was hilarious!

oooohhhh...
Ellen for me!
but for Drama... I wish I could have voted for three... but my love for Buffy overpowers my love for the X-files and the Twilight Zone.

got Cloverfield? 1-18-08-underground.com does...Boy, you know how to get a
Insignificant Drama
The comedy category was hard but eventually I went for the death of Henry Blake on MASH Despite not being around when it originally aired, that show is one of my all time favourites and I can remember having to put up a fight with my older brother and sister to get control of the remote because they hated it. I wouldn't let it go though and they relented for that half hour everyday. Though not a terribly comedic moment in this brilliantly funny show, it affected me so much and I will remember the moment forever when little Radar came in to tell the gang that Colonol Blake was dead. I teared up just watching the clip and it just exemplifies the genious of the shows hilarious highs and its poetic and sobering lows.
Now, the Drama category had me somewhat troubled, maybe its just me being a youngin' but the majority of the moments on the list didn't seem that significant(except the Fugutive, which I voted for) The comdey category I had to um and ah over, but eventually went with my gut.But the Drama seemed like they picked some weird moments from this strange assortment of fairly significant shows. I can't really think of any more "dramatic" moments from other shows off the top of my head, but i just get the general sense that there has got to be more than what was there. What does everybody else think?
Good suggestions
Ellen!
It has to be Ellen. She changed the face of television with her bravery by coming out in that episode. I'm a firm believer that we wouldn't have had Will&Grace, the American version of QAF or The L Word if she hadn't have paved the way. I remember how amazing that episode was when it first aired. Nothing had ever been seen like it before. I still love it, and I still feel awe towards her when I watch it.
There were soo many clips that could have been chosen from that episode. It combined the serious message with great comedy. What more could you ask for?
couldn't decide
I never saw Ellen when it was first on, stupid english tv....so when i saw Friends on the list i voted for that and went back to vote for Ellen because i think it is a great scene and says a lot about how far tv has come since then. In the drama cat. had to Buffy - there was nothing else like it i still can't believe that Joss never got an Emmy for the show - he is amazing. Can't believe there is no six feet under clip - tut tut!!!

British TV...
We did have Ellen!
Ellen was shown by Channel 4 and we were a season behind America. The puppy episode aired in 1998 for us. Channel 4 did a huge night of gay programming around the episode, and held a party for Ellen. She was there with Anne Heche, and Betty, plus loads of UK celebs she probably didn't know!! They kept going back to the party between each programme.. Wow, ten years ago and I can still remember it! I remember she said how awed she felt by it all considering her own network didn't even buy her a bottle of wine to celebrate, yet a network in a different country was willing to show her so much support.
SOOOO freaked
craziness
I JUST watched that episode of Buffy 10 minutes ago, which would be coincidence enough only.. I watched it for the first time ever. I wasn't re-watching or anything, I actually have been trying to catch up with everyone else for years now (only like 6 years behind right? :P) and I JUST heard that line.. I'm kinda freaked out right now.. i mean what were the chances?
edit: also that line really reminds me of the Doctors (supposed) final words to Rose in the Series 1 finale (NewWho) "And if you wanna remember me, then you can do one thing, that's all, one thing. [turns to Rose] Have a good life. Do that for me, Rose. Have a fantastic life.". *sob* like my favourite part ever.. im sorry but i think i prefer it to the Buffy line, esp. given the context and the rest of his speech about how he promised to look after her and how the TARDIS can never return for him and how nobody will notice it and to let it gather dust. They're both great though and I guess Buffy's one came first. not that it was really THAT similar, maybe just to me
anyways this comment is not so much about the article, i guess i just had to comment about the touchign line and the weird coincidence!
