Sarah Polley is somebody in "Nobody"

Sarah Polley, one of the most gifted actors and filmmakers of her generation, just began filming in Brussels for Mr. Nobody, an intriguing sci-fi fantasy by Belgian filmmaker Jaco van Dormael and co-starring Jared Leto.

The plot is described as having something to do with chaos theory, the "butterfly effect" and the exigencies of existence, and the last mortal man contemplating his past life and lost marriage. Whatever. We'll go with anything if it turns out well, which is always a long shot, if I'm up on my latest chaos film theory.

Polley was the darling of the international film festival circuit with her recent film Away From Her, featuring perhaps the best performance of Julie Christie's career. The film, widely considered one of the year's best and available on DVD in September, is an astonishing achievement for Polley, who both wrote the screenplay and directed. Here's the trailer:

AfterEllen.com readers might remember Polley best from Exotica, in which she starred with fellow Canadian and L Word waif Mia Kirshner, but truly obsessed fans are still recovering from the impenetrable 2001 fantasy No Such Thing, which featured another AfterEllen.com favorite, Helen Mirren. This train wreck of a film must have served as a sort of disaster-preparedness drill for Polley as an aspiring director.

A Polley film I love is Michael Winterbottom's The Claim, a western retelling of Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge. The cinematography and feel reminds me strongly of Julie Christie's great McCabe and Mrs. Miller, and features unforgettable performances by Polley and Nastassja Kinski (note to self: might be a nice time to program a little Julie Christie film festival via Netflix — maybe Petulia, Dr. Zhivago and The Secret Life of Words, which also features Polley).

Polley is also playing Abigail Adams, daughter of John and Abigail Adams (Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney) in HBO's upcoming, well, John Adams. I'm looking forward to sharpening my snark teeth for this one, if it turns out anything like the 1984 miniseries George Washington. Anyone here old enough to remember that gaseous gem with Barry Bostwick, Patty Duke and Jaclyn Smith? Ah, the joys of being 14 years old and titillated by watching Jaclyn Smith playing George Washington's mistress. Simpler, geekier times!

Ugh!

I hate admitting that I'm old enough to remember that miniseries, but alas I do. The founding of our country as told through the lens of the 80s. God, I fell asleep just typing that sentence.

Clearly I should catch up on Sarah Polley's career.

ehpa!

I didn't know that this actress from "Go" (remember that flick? with katie holmes too. hahaha so bad) was so accomplished - very impressive bio for being so young. Yay for female directors!

Gosh! She looks uber-hot in that first pic!

Saw her at the Vancouver Film Fest at her directorial debut Away from Her. SHe did a Q&A after. Very modest. Petite. Sweet. Could have been mistaken for one of the funky arty student types in my cool neighbourhood (The Drive) :) LOVED HER in an indie movie called My Life Without Me. Catch it if you've never seen it. Brilliant acting: nuanced and heart wrenching. Set in my hometown, Vancouver!

PS

She's one of those precocious young women. Got through a lot of living very young. Lost her mother to cancer when she was 12. She made the decision to leave the series The Road from Avonlea when she was 14 I think. Left home and lived independently around then too. Became a passionate leftie activist in mainstream and issue politics for a few years in Toronto. She was offered the part that Kate Hudson took in Almost Famous, but turned it down. Decided Hollywood wasn't for her. She's now only 27.

My Life Without Me

I totally recommend her in 'My Life Without Me'. The movie was a huge hit among any of my friends in Europe whose film opinion I value and its one of my most favorite movies as well. Directed by Catalan director but shot in English, taking place in the US. Wonderful original and touching story. Talk about 'female sensibility movies' - this is one of the best ones around..

I've been enthralled with

I've been enthralled with her since she played Ramona Quimby. Glad to see she's not giving up on the acting now that she's made such a distinguished name for herself as a director.
