More "Army Wives" for everyone

When will I ever learn? I've gotten suckered in by subtext yet again. Those deeply meaningful looks held those few extra seconds, the unusual number of little touches, the ardently sincere declarations of undying friendship ... sigh.

This time around I've got Army Wives toying with my affections, and you can bet I haven't missed an episode. And now comes the news that the show has been renewed for a second season. All the better to parse every excruciating (excruciatingly ordinary?) moment of warmth between Claudia Joy (Kim Delaney) and Denise (Catherine Bell).

"I'm here for whatever you need," avows Claudia in the following promo, but do I really need these games again?

And darn it all if Catherine Bell isn't coyly playing along, if her quote in TV Guide is any clue:

"It's so nice to have girlfriends on set. We all hang out together on weekends. There's a lot of joking, too. The biggest joke is about having sex with each other. We've done these fake blooper reels where one of us pops up in the bed of another couple. It's Desperate Army Housewives."

One wonders if that reel will ever see the light of day, given the show's unctuous desire to remain "apolitical." You thought the war was divisive — try adulterous lesbian affairs on a military base, carried on while the menfolk are off making the world safe for democracy. Actually, imagine the power that story line would have to unite the Lifetime audience against the war!

One of the strongest dramatic moments so far comes during a speech by Claudia Joy in episode 5: "I have also had to put my personal opinions aside to truly understand that our defenders of freedom are fighting a bigger battle. Not a political one. Their battle goes beyond politics, beyond religion, race or gender. They are the defenders for us all, they are the defenders of our differences."

Just how different are you, Claudia Joy?

    Yeah!

Don't you just LOVE that moment where Denise runs out of the barricade they put up and to Claudia Joy just after the whole 'being taken hostage' ordeal.

All these glances, all these silences. Come out and kiss already *wink*

    Hmmm...

Last night's episode was interesting during the "I'm pissed" scene when Denise declared it was time for her to be herself. What does that mean, Denise?  Will you discover that you are into women?

I'm willing to bet tho' that it won't be Claudia Joy, if that does happen.  It is American TV after all.  If they did make her a lesbian, it would be for just a moment and it wouldn't one of the other stars. It would be someone who could be written out easily. Ah, one day, maybe, we'll grow up.

    Enjoy your day...

Chemistry is a funny thing ...

Denise and Claudia Bell have fabulous chemistry together. And who would have thought that Catherine Bell could play such a meek and mild character like Denise, especially after her long stint as the tough Marine lawyer on JAG.

And yeah I completely agree that these two gals seem to be way closer than friends. That point was especially driven home when I saw Denise's husband coming home from the war.  Gosh, he just seemed so wrong for Denise (physically, emotionally, and intellectually), and every time I see them together its like watching Bubba Redneck and the Princess.

Katherine Fugate, if you are listening, inject some more subtext between Claudia Joy and Denise, like you did with your fabulous Xena Warrior Princess episode, "When Fates Collide."

They have to be aware of how

They have to be aware of how strong the chemistry is between the two, it's so...obvious. I'm so glad Army Wives got picked up for another season.

Army Wives in the UK please

Isn't it about time they showed it over here?

If only to indulge my all consuming love for Catherine Bell :]
