The Lo-Down: The Sports Episode

This week Sarah Pecora and I deliver a somewhat random Lo-Down, encompassing a whole range of Crock P.O.C. topics including whether chicks who ride motorcycles are by definition hotter than those who don't ride motorcycles, to what you should say when people ask, "What does your tattoo mean?"

Then we turned our attention to the hot topic of ... sports! Yes, it's true, neither Sarah P. nor I are particularly big sports fans, but given my fascination with the Olympics and the fact that we recently attended a sporting event together, we I thought this was a great subject for us to discuss. Plus it gave us a chance to drool over the deliciously tattooed Natasha Kai, the only out soccer player on the U.S. national team and a woman of color.

Speaking of tattoos, we were originally going to include video of Sarah P. getting her latest tattoo, but you're just going to get a sneak peek this time, because she's not quite done with the process (yes, it requires multiple sittings). Hopefully next time we'll have more to show you!

    Lo-Down

Yay!!! You used my crock-topic!! That was very exciting!

Sorry to hear about your unfriendly rodeo experience. Here in podunk, rodeos are a main form of entertainment... and yes, they are generally homophobic and republican centered, which is too bad because the rodeo itself is fun to watch. If you want a really interesting adventure, you should go to a demolition derby... just be prepared for unfriendly drunk white republicans. Malinda, you may actually enjoy seeing, from an anthropological perspective, the true white trash of our nation. They come out in droves here for the demo-derby.

I am so sad to see the Lo-Down leave AE. It has been so much fun watching you two and hearing your perspectives on everything! Thank you for everything!! If you are ever in podunk, look me up! :)

Rodeo recommendations What the Frak do you mean final episode?

We have a gay rodeo every year, I've only been to the barn burner dance that kicks off the rodeo, but that's because I'm not a huge rodeo fan.  Though I hear it's fun.
We have an Alberta gay rodeo association http://www.argra.org

Also every year around June/July we have the Calgary Stampede.  Now I have been to that rodeo, and it's like a fair + rodeo.  Let me just say that I think American Rodeo's are a lot different from Canadian Rodeo's as in the people and war supporters, Republicans, etc. We're a lot nicer (I'd like to think).  Barrel racing, and the chuks are things that you should definitely see at the rodeo (other than the typical bull/mustang riding).

And yes goat dressing was specifically created for the gay rodeo (from what I read).

    FINAL EPISODE???

No no no!  That saddens me.  This is actually one of the few REALLY good vlogs that are out there right now (in the explosion of vlogs).  I said it once, I'm going to say it again, your vlog actually brought me to afterellen.com.  If it wasn't for your vlog, I probably would not have found this website.

I completely understand having other commitments, but could we say a long hiatus rather than a final episode?

I liked the random Lo-Down this week!

As a non-tattooed person, I don't really see body art as quite that personal - if you've got it and you're displaying it, you're bound to have questions asked! So if you don't like it, get a tattoo somewhere where no one is going to see it. But hey, that's me. The Olympics have a few really good events to watch, like swimming (women!) or diving (women!) or sprinting (women!) or gymnastics (yeah, women!) but in general, I'm not a sports fan (though I am obsessed with cricket). And being an anthropology/sociology student, I completely understand Malinda's anthropological obsession with the Beijing Olympics!

Since this is probably the last time I'll get to ask questions of you guys, has it been weird revealing so much of your personal lives on the internet? It'll be sad not to have the Lo-Down anymore in a couple weeks time, so I'd just like to say thanks for all the loveliness you two have brought into the lives of all your watchers. This vlog is probably the most interesting, involving, enlightening and interactive vlog on AE that deals with serious stuff in a fun way - and as I've said before, has seriously the best eye candy on the site!

You're going on a vacation, right? Do you mean Final episode you'll be back ? Or final Episode you'll never gonna return?

Please don't let it be latter part. Dang, Dang,Dang. Anyway. Classes will begin next week  for me anyway. I need to focus anyway.

I hope you're tat is off the hook. Love ya'll. ! (excuse my southern accent)

    Peace

Thanks for answering my question :) Come to think of it I saw a tattoo of the internet of a winnie the pooh decapitating a piglet. But I got my tattoo when I was 17. It's not a disney character though (phew). I'm liking Sarah's tattoo though - hope it doesn't hurt too much. The most painful part of mine is when my back spasmed a few hours later from beign bent over.

Oh dear - I got hit on by two men at pride - and was told I look too straight to be gay. I also look younger than I am...Then equally so when I was younger people used to say I look like a boy. I wish they could just make their minds up. Not everyone fits neatly into categories!

Rodeo reminds me of Borat when he did that song in the middle of the stadium *cringe*.

And the road stretched on like an angry woman...

Entertaining as always....I'm going to miss you guys.

    University Challenged

Just completed my degree in anthropology, focusing on Scottish urban youth subcultures and am now fabulously unemployed. But it got me thinking of a question for your final show (*gasp*), what would you say is the main thing you got out of your degree?

(P.S - Tattoos looking good, looking forward to the finished product. I am currently on my ninth and counting...)

I don't leave comments that much, but I just had to write that I love this vlog and that I'm going to miss it when you leave Malinda. :(

Sarah - I'm liking that new tattoo!

    Noooo!

Not the last show! How do we make it not be the last show? I can whine really well! Or... hold my breath in protest...? Um... I've been hoping that the Malinda-leaving was only going to be a level of involvement thing. Please don't disappear completely from AfterEllen! The Malinda and Sarah show is so much fun and always interesting.

The tattoo is looking gorgeous and I hope we'll get to see the finished product. I'm still working up the nerve and commitment for a tattoo. We shall see!

As for motorcycles and hotness, I'm sure you both saw Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer with their bikes. Yum!

    You guys are the best!

I'm going to miss the Lo-Down, too.  Part of what makes it so much fun to watch is how you two interact ... it's easy to see that you really are good friends & enjoy each other's company. And, you're both just so down to earth.  It is my favorite vlog on AE, hands down.

For a last Crock P.O.C. question ... if you guys got together 20 years from now for a Lo-Down reunion, what do you think you'd be talking about?

    Happy trails to you!

    Tattoos

I have 2 at the moment.  And they are pretty self explanatory.  One is the outline of a maple leaf (I'm Canadian) and the other one is the word hope with the breast cancer awareness ribbon.  I got that one because my Aunt and Grandma were both breast cancer survivors.

The next one I am getting is a cartoon character.  I my Grandfather's favourite show was Bewitched, so my parents named me after Samantha Stevens.  So I am getting Samantha on her broom, somewhere on my person.

The outline is the only part that hurts when getting a tattoo.  Well, that's the only part that hurts me.

    Tattoos

I love it when people asks me if my piercings/tattoo hurt, cause I liked getting them and to me they were painless (does that make me a masochist?). About the meaning, since my tattoo had no meaning whatsoever I just get a lot of strange looks haha.

So sad to hear about the potentially final episode. You´ll be missed.

    Show Me Love

My fav lesbian movie is "Show Me Love". I just felt the need to say that, and recommend that others watch it too. And thanks for using my topic...I really don't know why that guy said that to me though. I really never thought I looked too 'femme' but as I said before I was a bit offended that he relied on stereotypes of what lesbians look and act like.

    Whatever...

Never met a pearl quite like you that could shimmer and rot at the same time through

    Fustrated!

I sometimes worry that I don't look or act gay enough because I want the other gay girls to know I'm there without have to just say that I'm a homosexual.

Maybe I missed it in another blog but Malinda I was wondering how your parents, especially your mom took to you being gay because I'm chinese also and my parents, especially my mother is very traditional. I think most parents would have seen all the clues and had concluded on the gayness, but it doesn't seem to be happening. I think the biggest problem is that she believes that we are each a part of each other. So if we disagree then we are hurting the other person, which make me feel guilty.

And yeah, when I told my younger sister, she just said ok too.

    Final Episode : (

Yours is the only vlog that I watch.  I've tried others, but this one is the best!  I am sad that you two are leaving the vlog world at AE.

And I totally agree with Sarah: getting beat up (wether it be by moutain or by a needle) is hot.

    Welcome To My World...

That rodeo sounds familure, like my everyday life, lol. You should have seen my face when my town hosted the gay rodeo, my jaw dropped. Luckily I knew a group of people who were performing there and went to "support them". I <3 gay cowboys/cowgirls, lol!!

    I'm only 97% gay....the other 3% is for the sexy trannies!! ====>GAY<====

    Bummer

First, just want to say that your vlog will be greatly missed.  And sorry to hear your visit to the rodeo was not fun at all. That said, Sarah, it looks like your new tat is gonna be awesome!  Hope we get to see the finished art. I agree with you both on Natasha Kai. and as far as bad tattoos, or tattoo don'ts, I give you these prime examples:

    Final? Aww, I hope not.

Final? And you guys just slip that in at the end like that? I'm not sure what the reasons are, and I assume that if it were something that readers could influence/change then you would have said so, but I'd be really sad to see The Lo-Down end.

I'll just focus on the word "potentially." Potentially final means potentially not-final, right? Right?

edit: I hadn't read that Malinda is stepping down as managing editor when I wrote that. Oops. It all makes sense now. It's neat that you're moving on to new and exciting things, but you'll be missed here!

    MORE LO-DOWN!

    Great entertainment as usual girls!

So sorry to hear about your rodeo experience, totally scary that these things are happening in California of all the states!

NO MORE LO-DOWN! no way, i love your vblog! Thanks for keeping me entertained and up to date with all the important issues (; You will be missed ):

    MissEarlGrey's picture

    Adieu :(

Great episode as usual, you manage to make a subject i dont care much about (sport) entertaining. I think you ladies could talk about potatoes and it be facsinating and manage to make it gay related XD.

You are too straight looking to be gay XD Someone once told me i didnt look gay, in good humour, so it wasnt bad. But i did have a very macho guy claim i was pretending to be a lesbian so i could be close to one of my straigh guy friend, one i consider like a brother. I was insulted to say the least.

You are my favorite vlog, i fallow a lot of them here but the lo-down is the one i look foward to each time and wait impatiently for. My gal and I always try to watch it together ;) Can you make the final double time? Seriously i love lsitening to you rant and ramble and bitch and tell anecdotes, its very interesting and entertaining. This vlog will seriously be missed!

    space's picture

    oh no! leaving?!

loving annabelle was great!  agree, erin kelly is hot!!!   LOL at sarah's little "impression" of malinda!  so why did you guys go to the rodeo?  i actually heard that california is mainly conservative other than sf and la, so it makes sense.  your vlog made me feel sad!  aww :( you guys were the first one that got me into watching vlogs!  and you guys are able to talk about serious and silly topics and make it entertaining, which i dont see too often.  so that will definitely be missed.  plus you guys are really relatable and represent sf well, among other reasons your awesome! please accept this as a plea! haha..
    jitka's picture

    you'll be missed sarah!

I'm sorry to hear that a) Malinda Lo will no longer be with us at AE; and b) that I probably won't get to see Sarah again! That seems a bit silly to feel sad about but I like Sarah P. a lot.

It's true, you two are relatable. You seem like the kind of people I could sit with and not feel intimidated by but also be able to identify with because you are queer and women of color, like myself.

So I'm really looking fwd to your next-- and possibly last, vlog.

    cheers!
