TV Guide's "Top 30 Cult Shows Ever" gets the lesbian treatment

Today TV Guide has unveiled its Top 30 Cult Shows Ever in one of the barest, most minimal lists to be seen on the internet lately. There's just a list! No pictures, no clicking through to count down to No. 1, only a lone photo of Skeet Ulrich as Jake Green in the improbably renewed Jericho. Don't worry: I'm here to pretty up the list for you — and to make it more lesbolicious as well. Here are the dykey highlights from the list:

25. FireflyJoss Whedon's short-lived TV series featured bisexual courtesan Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin) in addition to the awesome Gina Torres as the ass-kicking Zoe Washburne and Summer Glau as the mysterious and slightly spooky River Tam.

21. Freaks and GeeksI just loved this show! Still so sad that it didn't make it on the air.

18. Veronica Mars — I admit it: I tried to get into this show, but despite a valiant attempt at watching it, I never dug it. Sue me! Nonetheless, I do agree it should be on this list.

14. Battlestar Galactica — Yes, they're talking about the new one, the one with Grace Park and Katee Sackhoff and Tricia Helfer and Mary McDonnell and Lucy Lawless. Damn, I love this show.

11. Jericho — I actually really like this show; sure, it's cheesy in parts, but it's got that whole post-apocalyptic nuclear winter thing that I, for some odd reason, find fascinating. Plus, it has Ashley Scott in it:

Look familiar to you? You may remember her from Birds of Prey, when she was a brunette:

10. Xena: Warrior Princess — What can I say that hasn't already been said?

3. Buffy the Vampire Slayer — There can never be too much Buffy!

2. The X-Files — The enigmatic Dr. Scully is always a good shot and easily defies physics by running so well in high heels.

1. Star Trek — The original series, not the later versions with lesbiany stuff. But when Star Trek finally did get dykey, boy did they go for it.

So what did TV Guide leave out? (Personally, I vote for Birds of Prey, but maybe nobody watched that besides me.)

    Arrested Development

Personally, on my top 5 list of favorite shows of all time. So sad that it is off the air.

    AD

exactly what I was thinking.  Boy I miss this show....
    NorthernStar's picture

    Star Trek - bahhhh

Never could get into it, not the OS or subsequent sequals. Sorry.

However, a few of my absolute Favorite are in it: Xena, Buffy, Quantum Leap, B5 (How could you not mention Ivanova? she was SO GAY!) X-Files and Veronica. I'm not surprised to see Firely on it either. It's an amazon best seller, apparently. I bet those Fox execs are sorry for axing it far too soon.

How about My So Called Life and Tru Calling? Also major cults, as well as Sex and the City, Gilmore Girls, and Alias. why aren't they on the list?

    Omega II's picture

    So true...

No B5? Come on! Poor Ivanova, she finally got Talia in bed and Andrea Thompson wants off the show.

    Ooh, Ooh, Birds of Prey

I loved this show!! Some of the cheesiest dialog and storylines ever but it had Ashley Scott in leather pants and Dina Meyer! I started to watch Jericho just for Ashley Scott (but personally I like the dark hair better). Oh and did I mention that BoP had Dina Meyer!!!

    Birds of Prey

was totally underrated! Sure, it was cheesy, but honestly, what comic-based television isn't? Plus it was chock full of hotties: Ashley Scott, Dina Meyer, and maybe it's just me, but I've adored Mia Sara ever since she was Sloane Peterson.

    13 episodes... what a shame.

On a side note, yay for Buffy being up in the ranks with The X-Files and Star Trek. :D

    Omega II's picture

    Who doesn't?

Who doesn't love Mia Sara? I loved her pure evil as Harley Quinn.

    PS- Love the the avatar.

That was like a dream come true, one of my favorite actresses playing my favorite femme fatale. :)

Haha, thanks, that's one of my favorite scenes ever.

    I agree with Arrested Development

That should have been on the list.  Sadly, hardly anyone watched it and missed out on the brilliance of the acting and the extremely wittiness of the writing.  Best show ever!

They were hinting for an AD movie but I don't think it's going to happen.  I'd totally watch it if there was one.

    BOP

I loved this show so much!  I recently re-watched it a couple of weeks ago and totally fell in love with Ashley Scott again.  I wish she would go back to being brunette!  Ok so maybe the show wasn't the best quality... but Ashley totally makes it worth it.

Wonderfalls!!! Such a funny and intelligent show. Sadly it was cancelled really quickly, but I highly recommend the dvds (including great audio-commentaries).

    Kaylee!

I created an account expressly to say: how can you mention the gorgeous women of Firefly and leave out Kaylee?

Jewel Staite is, in my opinion, one of the most adorable girls on the planet.  To leave her out when talking about Firefly is practically criminal. :-)  Also, to many fans, myself included, Kaylee and Inara are a perfect couple.

Oodles of pictures of the lovely, lovely Jewel: http://jewel-staite.net/gallery/index.php

I concur, as I wrote below.

Also, I find it really funny that we're both defending Kaylee, and both have usernames with some reference to strawberries (mine's strawberrygirl). Represent. </dork>

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

    Ashley Scott

I've watched a couple of episodes of Birds of Prey, and even though it seems like my kind of show on paper, I never really got into it.

I'm also going to have to disagree with several people; I think Ashley Scott looks better as a blonde. I wonder if that's her natural colour.

My new celebrity crush: Katee Sackhoff! I've never seen a whole episode of Battlestar Galactica, but I'm thinking I should start watching it.

    What about Wonderfalls???

Am I the only one who really misses Wonderfalls and the awesome Katie Finneran playing a Republican lesbian lawyer? Lovely Caroline Dhavernas, where are you when we need you?

    DJJellyfeltz's picture

    OH MAN!

How could I forget Wonderfalls?? My Tivo gets a work out whenever they play it on LOGO.

    Yeah, for real. Sharon was

Yeah, for real. Sharon was quite possibly amazing. I have that show on DVD (along with probably every other show cancelled by FOX), and I watch it constantly. I love it when she gives the passionate speech to her girlfriend about dominating her, and it ends up making no sense. I think the exact quote was, "And I know I was just talking about birds, and cars, and I think there was a mining reference in there somewhere, but that doesn't make it any less true!"

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

    Omega II's picture

    Katie and Caroline's

Katie and Caroline's comedic with dramatic abilities are amazings.

And the Fucked Over by Fox section of my DVD self says, "Hi".

    Uh, you can't have Buffy

Uh, you can't have Buffy without the Angel. That's like peanut butter without the jelly, or in this case vampire without the soul. Cordelia was incredibly hot and Fred was the brainy cute of the Scooby Gang. Also, what about Square Pegs? Total Eighties Cult Classic right there. I mean how can you not love Sara Jessica Parker as a Geek? It was the original Freaks and Geeks, and actually aired in the Eighties. Not that I'm knocking Freaks and Geeks b/c I can get down with some Haverchuck.

    Dark Angel

I can't believe Dark Angel was left off the list.

    Strangers With Candy

Ooooh!  What about strangers w/ candy?  Does that count as a cult show, or was it just me who loved it?

you definately are not alone there.

    Yes, Birds of Prey!

I was a fan of the Birds of Prey series - and now the comics written by Gail Simone. With a lot of mediocre shows still running on tv, it never made sense why Birds of Prey was cancelled. Ahsley Scott was so HOT - all spunk and daring - and yes, hot hot leather pants.

And am I the only one who thought Dina Meyer was exquiste with those Michelle Pfeiffer-like bone structures? ;)

I love that picture of Ashley Scott in BoP that you posted, malindalo. Thanks!

And BSG - there's so many beautiful, strong women to adore. *sigh*

    Gilmore Girls...

    best show ever!

    Firefly!

On this blog! It's like two of the best things in my life coming together as one delicious whole! I love, love, love Inara as much as the rest of them (and her being bisexual doesn't hurt. Also, it's funny, because my best friend is her CLONE.), but you left out my favorite, adorable Kaylee!! The seemingly innocent mechanic who has pretty awesome chemistry with previously mentioned Inara. Forget about Simon.

Also, Jewel Staite is possibly the cutest person ever.

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

    Farscape

Props for putting Farscape on the list (and in the top five!). There were certainly a number of lesbian moments/characters in that show, too.

    that's all. ;o)

I love Sci Fi, but I never

I love Sci Fi, but I never got into Star Trek and had no desire too, but I would agree that it is the #1 cult tv show, based on...well everything, the following, the absurd amount of Trekkies.

I never saw Freaks and Geeks either, but I do remember when everyone was upset when it got canceled.

And #2 & #3, Buffy and the X Files, are my top 2 favorite shows of all time, so I totally agree with that. You are right, you can never have too much Buffy, or Fuffy fanfiction. I am planning to have a Buffy marathon this summer, Ive been feeling nostalgic, hehe.

Was My So-Called Life on the list?

I did not know that Ashley Scott was on Jericho, man I loved her on Birds of Prey, and she is so f*ckin hot as a brunette.

I went to check out the list and Lost is #5, when Stargate SG-1 is #28. PLEASE. Lost should be nowhere on this list, and the top 10 should mostly be shows that aren't on air anymore. Shows that are still on, can't be complete cult hits until they are off really. Like thousands of people still go to Star Trek, Xena, and Buffy conventions years after they have been off. I don't completely agree with the entire list.

    Dead Like Me?

Arrested Development was too damn good to actually stay on the air.  I loved when Charlize Theron was in it!

    I was thinking

I was thinking Once and Again would be on there. That was a good show and I love Evan Rachel Wood. I wish they would put season 3 out on dvd. Jessie and Katie were really just getting together when they cancled the show. But damn they were so cute together.
