Time for another personality quiz! (You know you want it!)This December, the movie version of Philip Pullman's incredible book The Golden Compass will be hitting theaters, starring Nicole Kidman as the mysterious and seductive Mrs. Coulter.
In case you haven't read the novel, which is the first in a trilogy, The Golden Compass follows the adventures of 12-year-old Lyra Belacqua (who will be played in the movie by newcomer Dakota Blue Richards), a girl who grows up in an Oxford, England, that is not quite like our own. In Lyra's world, everyone has an animal familiar known as a daemon. A child's daemon can change form, but as the child grows up, the daemon settles into one identity. As you read the book, you start to realize that one's daemon is more than a companion; a daemon is, essentially, one's soul. The movie's official website has just launched a fun section called "Meet Your Daemon" (click on "Daemons" on the top of the page and then select "Meet Your Daemon"), in which you can take a 20-question quiz to discover which animal spirit best fits you. Interestingly, a person's daemon typically is of the opposite sex, which made me wonder (of course) whether there are gay people in Lyra's world and whether their daemons are of the same sex. It's been awhile since I read the series, so I can't recall if this ever comes up. If anybody knows, feel free to comment! Oh yeah: My daemon turned out to be Rasthmus the fox.
I think this might even match (sort of) the results of my Star Wars personality test. Han Solo's kinda foxy, wouldn't you say? Submitted by on May 4, 2007 - 4:06pm. |

to foxy and modest daemon, nin hao))
Same-sex daemons
Actually, there is a mention in the first book (which I just finished rereading) of a man with a male daemon. Same-sex daemons are described as rare, but it doesn't specify whether these people are gay. However, a friend of mine met Philip Pullman at a book signing and asked him if that was the case. He said, "Well, it would appear that way."
:)
Elleron!
Check out my daemon!
It means that I'm "modest, spontaneous, responsible, inquisitive, and dependable."
I'm not sure about gay people and daemons -- I read the first two books in the trilogy ages ago (I still have good intentions about reading the third one) -- maybe lesbians have gay male daemons and vice versa?
I love the trilogy!
I love "His dark materials" - even though it's a children's book there are many layers and parallels. Seemingly more so than in any Harry Potter (no offense).
And I was about to post about same sex daemons, but Megan beat me to it :) Wow, a friend of mine also met Philip at a book signing, recently.
My daemon's Philoteus.

Then again...
Then again, what about bisexual folks? Would my daemon have to be some sort of hermaphroditic creature? Because that would be strange...
I agree that this trilogy is remarkably deep for a children's series, especially the last book. (I admit, I got choked up at the end.)
You could take a different point of view
Rather than fixating on gender one could try energies (as in "yin-yang" principle); some people are more "feminin", others more "masculin"... and, well, one needs the other to balance things out, eh?

Pereus
My Daemon is Pereus , a Lion Daemon . it means i'm responsible, modest , solitary , dependable , softly spoken.
Comme disait Jeanne D'Arc : " tu verras de quel bois je me chauffe " ;)
trans daemons
I took that quiz a while ago and it said my daemon was female, and since I'm an FTM trans guy I wondered if my daemon got a sex change too or if it was born female? I guess if my soul was male and my daemon was the representation of my soul and it was female all along, then that would make sense. But it amuses me to think of my daemon (I got a wolf) getting a sex change!
Haha, thinking way too much.
figures...mine was a male chimp
(No subject)
Well, I'm not sure about how
According to the quiz, lol, my daemon is a ladybug.
Not bad...
Olin
Means I'm responsible, assertive, solitary, shy and proud.
The same again
I just took this quiz and I ended up the same as you :)
Geeee what a surprise LOL
"Spontaneous, solitary,
"Spontaneous, solitary, fickle, shy and proud."
I actually just finished
I had fun reading these
I had fun reading these books and I think this is the best casting EVER as far as Ms. Coulter is concerned! If I had to pick anyone in the world, I'd have chosen her as well!
As for the gay/lesbian daemon... well, I'd agree with the same gender thing only... as far as the steriotype goes... shouldn't gay's have 'too much' female hormones (aka a female daemon) and lesbians a male daemon for their overabundancy of male hormones?
Now I'm al confused... meh!
Anyways, daemon!
Oh and that site (and the movie) looks beautiful! I think I'm actually gonna go see this :D
Who you gonna be if you can't be yourself,
you can't get it from t.v., you can't force it on

There's a question about the
There's a question about the same sex daemons on the FAQ of the fansite, but Philip Pullman doesn't give a clear answer. http://www.bridgetothestars.net/index.php?p=FAQ#3
tiger daemon I love the
recently read "his dark
recently read "his dark materials" for a children's lit class and loved them. they totally lend themselves to a movie version.
and with nic kidman as mrs. coulter? you CANNOT go wrong!
Monkey Island
My favourite trilogy
I wouldn't call the books on a whole, childrens at all.
They delve to great depths that children cannot understand.
I look very much forward to the film, i'm glad that Nicole Kidman will be playing Mrs Coulter, she is just like the woman I pictured as I read.
I'm disappointed that they felt the need to change the title though, to suit the americans perhaps. I just hope that the basis of the films doesn't get ripped to shreds when it comes to questioning the Church >.>
His dark materials's audience
LJS, I can see why you wouldn't call HDM a childrens' book. I just think that Philip Pullman wrote a book that appeals to a wider audience. And whether it's books or movies, children look at them from their point of view - which different from adults'. So while we delve deeper and see the layers in the book, they read (or hear, if it's read to them) about a great and wonderful adventure.

I predicted these books
I predicted these books would be turned into a movie when I first read them, four years ago. Nicole Kidman makes an amazing Mrs. Coutler.
I'm excited, but people tend to butcher books when they are made into movies, so I'm a little nervous as well. I hope this move turns out well.
my daemon is....
of course i'm a monkey. thanks.
Serafina & Kaisa?
Nicoleus,
he's a male tiger...
and I am modest, flexible, dependable, assertive and competitve
Melania - Gibbon Daemon
my daemon is a gibbon :( There are lots of cool daemons and I got a monkey. I hate monkeys
Cool stuff
Two times screwed.
Raccoon's aren't so bad
Raccoons are clever and inquisitive, not to mention pretty bad-ass looking.
It bothers me that they're pronouncing daemon as "demon," and it will probably annoy me throughout the movie. Daemon is Greek for little god, like a small spirit, and is pronounced die-mone, almost like diamond. Pronouncing it demon is just going to get some fundamentalists up in arms about how the books/movies teach satanism and worship of devils or some such, when that's not the point at all. So I don't think that the comments about daemons are necessarily accurate, because the word is not meant to be read as impious at all (although I haven't read HDM yet, so I may be mistaken; but I think if the author intended to give the spirits a sinister edge, he would have just written "demon").
By the way, my soul is apparently Cleon the crow. Ca-caw.
