The Lo-Down: "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"

After an unexpectedly long hiatus, Sarah P. and I have returned with a new episode of The Lo-Down. We're a bit rusty with the vlogging these days, but we hope you enjoy this new episode, in which we offer our review of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull just in time for you to hit the theaters this weekend. If that's not enough for you, "Ashley" from Shot at Love 1 makes a guest appearance.

Plus, Sarah has a very special announcement! Thanks to all of you who wrote in and asked when we were coming back — we hope it was worth the wait. (But if not, uh, sorry!)

    baby names

    sarah, congrats! congrats!

i'm one of those scary women who has had my wedding planned and babies names picked out since i was little. and then a grew up and liked girls and things got more complicated. d'oh.

anyway... michaela lynn (in case she's a butch lesbian, she'll have a rad adult nickname as mike) or jennifer dawn. and if you go with anne, add an 'e'

    Yayay-- you're back.

Sad to hear no Battlestar Galactica reviews, but eh whatevs. Congratulations on the baby making!! Best wishes for the wedding. Are you going to post your wedding? It would be awesome to have the first staff wedding posted. Just a thought. Here are some baby names:

Alexandria (Alex), Josesphine (Jo), Holland (Holly), Christine (Chris), Samantha (Sam)- Also keep in mind that statistically she has a better chance of getting hired for a high (or higher) paying job if she has an androgenous or male name. It's not pretty, but it's a fact. Way to go sexism- woot.

    Great Comeback!

I like the new direction the Lo-Down is going in. Great review of Indiana Jones. Hopefully, I'll see it soon. Congratulations to you Sarah P and your partner for getting ready to have a girl and your future wedding. Malinda Lo you look so pretty in red. Congrats too,Malinda, on your new book deal. You should wear red more often. I'm glad you two are back. But I do understand that you have lives outsides of Afterellen.com. HUGZ!

Oh On baby names. Go with original and unique. Indian names are cool. I picture something short and sweet for your baby girl. I'll hunt around for suggestions and comeback to add it to my post.

Here are a few girl names : Nidra means sleep in India or you can spell this name differently like Nedra. I  made up this name Namyra.  Here is another one Saulia (The combination of Sarah and Claudia). A combination of whatever birthnames given to you two like middle names combine is a  great idea. Just my two cents. Luck on finding baby names.

It's great to have you back!

Yes, there are a million Vlogs on AE these days, but I did miss the Lo-down.

Congrats Sarah on the baby and the getting married.

Congrats Sarah and Claudia!! that's wonderful news. and Congrats Malinda on your novel moving forward, i look forward to reading it.

i'm glad you guys are back. even "rusty" you two are very funny and had me laughing the whole time. i look forward to seeing you two however often you can post.

i have a Battlestar related question for you guys. what do you think of the way racism is treated on the show? how it is shown more as a problem between Cylon and human and different colonies (Saggitarons and Capricans for example) than an issue of color. well, that's how it seems to me at least. thanks.

Saaaraaaah! Maaaaalindaaaaa! I am so happy you're back :D And congrats on your baby girl, Sarah and Claudia ;). I have three girls names for you: Grace, Amelia and Gwen. Simple and nice, no fruit or other weird names, lol. Good luck with picking a name ;)

    egret's picture

    Congratulations!

I'm so happy for you about the baby, Sarah!  As for names...  one of my favorites is Julia, and it would be a great name for a child with a parent named Claudia, continuing the Classical theme.  I like Mara, too, but it means bitter - which you could read as strength, but the kid might not like it when she's a teenager.

I'm also really glad that y'all are back - I love watching you play off of each other.

    Dark Child's picture

    Well it's about time!!!!!!

    I missed you two!  (sniff, sniff)  Big hugs to you {{{{{Sarah and Malinda}}}}}

Congratulations Sarah. I recommend that you think about male names that might benefit your daughter in the future.....like during a job interview. She can get a foot in the door if the employer thinks she is a male. Try Michael, Sydney, or Dallas.

What about Tuesday (Tuesday Weld/actress), Wednesday (from the Addams family), or Friday (after Joe Friday from the tv show Adam 12)

If you have triplets you can name them April, May and June. (I kind of like AUGUST.......No, really!!)

You could go the ethnic route and use Sha-qui-tah, La-shon-dah, and my personal favorite "Lavitra" (wait.....isn't that a pill for male sexual dysfunction?)

You could also go the Jr. route. Hey, it worked for Della Reese and her Daughter! You could name her Claudia Jr. or CJ for short.

    spiralstare's picture

    just in case

I'm a big believer in gender neutral names: Jordan, Taylor, Casey, Morgan, Quinn, Cameron... Tons of trendy new names are used either way, but those are pretty lame.

    grats to Sarah

I propose a Baby name and its Esther. Yes it's a Biblical name, but so is Sarah... and Esther is a beautiful name meaning shining star and she was a queen that saved her people.. and the best part of this name its pretty rare. The only other people that will have it will be older african american women and very young korean girls.

Moving on to Indiana Jones... my immediate reaction was to call George Lucas and ask for my $8.50 back but the more i thought about the movie the more I was ok with it. Now i'll even say it was enjoyable. As for minority people in the movie.... I don't belive you I saw none!

    Ruth's picture

That thing about "Esther" is so true

My religious Korean mom was caught in between naming me Esther or Ruth but chose Ruth because she was the great-grandmother of King David, which struck me as strange because the reason she used pertained to Ruth's descendant, not her.

And I've met so many Korean girls named Esther that I sometimes want to tell people that there are other names to give their kids.

    Bomi's picture

haha I'm glad you see it too!

Thats a neat reason your mother had for naming you Ruth, I can understand why she did that in a cultural frame-work. However, i'm sure trying to explain that would be a little difficult, remember its all about family in Korean society. ^.~ Someone recently explained to me the book of Ruth from a social-economic, historical standpoint and it was flipping facinating!

Tha being said, I would have to say the top 3 korean girl names must be... Grace, Ruth, and Esther with the top Korean boy names being Samuel, David, and Daniel. lol I love it ! Becaise at parties it goes, " So what Biblical character are you named after, what instrument do you play, and what foreign car do you drive?"

     Man I missed this vlog!

Congrates on all your happy news Sarah!  How about Layla for a girls name, or kestra.

I can't wait for your book Malinda! Will we be able to pre-order it?

Thank goodness for sane states like CA. Now if NE could only catch up....LOL who am i kidding.

    The beauty of watching this

The beauty of watching this vlog is - its worth the time! Good timing, good presentation, and good review.

I am going to watch Indiana Jones this weekend. It is also exciting for me because part of the movie was shot around my alma mater in New Haven and some of our folks have acted in it as well.

Hope you will post you next vlog soon. Congratulations to Sarah and all the best with your book Malinda. Hope to meet you at a reading soon.

Well i have to agree with

Well i have to agree with what you wrote. The few minutes i could grab from my schedule was well worth it. I get headache after watching SMMWT (Where Sara Warn wont let Lori speak) and Brunch with Bridget (where Bridget wont let any of her guests speak). This vlog is a better refuge to me who skim through this website to get rid of the stereotypical lesbian movies, TVshows and the above mentioned cacophonous vlogs.

On another note, the word Lesbian sounds more like the word Alien to me. Some lady in Lesbo Island tried it with a woman and now i have to be known as lesbian among the  hetero world. But nowadays the gay world is only worried about giving themselves new names (Did you watch the Liz feldman's vlog?). The more they define it the more they are narrowing down the identity. I wonder what they would call a Lesbain Cardiologist?!

Yay! Congratulations Sarah! You'll be a great Bobba!

I'm proud to say I have NOT been watching the second season of A Shot at Love. I skimmed the cast on mtv.com and there were only 2 hot women and I read early on on a brief report on this site that precisely those two got cut in the first couple episodes so there was no longer any draw to even check it out. And that's a good thing.

    Congrats Sarah and

    Congrats Sarah and Claudia!!

I'm glad the vlog is back. In the interim I tracked down a copy of Lesbian/Woman to read...entertaining, but not as fun as The Lo-Down :) I'm sad that it'll only be every other week, but you guys are obviously busy with other important stuff!

    IfOnly's picture

    Oh Congrats! =)

Wow. Baby! Awww! Hope she gets the Pecora eyebrows! (",) I'm not saying your HB has bad eyebrows, I've never seen them. =)

I absolutely love names coming back. 'Cause they do. And I'm not much for all the trendy new mystic names. But then, I don't know the "old" names you have over there. I like Julia. It says strenght, intelligence and integrity. Alexandra too. Well, in my head they do. I tried my best to think of a cooler name that I like and I ended up with Liv. Then I thunk it in English and Liv Taylor(?) popped in to my mind. Where was I going with this? Oh right. It sounds nice in Swedish (pronounced Leave) and it means life (in Swe.). Anyway. It was a cool question. And a name means so much. =)

Best Wishes to Sarah, Claudia and the little one. And to Malinda and her own baby. I look forward to reading about Ash.

    Congrat to you both

I am delighted with your news Sarah,  I think a babies name really comes when you see it, sometimes it has to change, I was ment tobe called Fiona, but my mother thought I didn't look like one!! I love the names Amy, Ella, Kelly and Blair, but I also like Aoife, Ciara, Siobhan etc good Irish names!

    Yay, y'all are back!

So happy the hiatus is over.  Congrats Sarah and Claudia!  Also, looking forward to Malinda's book release!  Baby names, that is tough.  I would have to agree with others that gender neutral, or names that can be shortened to gender neutral should be an option.  Personally, any name that can be shortened to 1 or two syllables (if she grows up to play team sports, that will be a big plus) would make my list of baby names. I have known a couple of gals named Stevie, and I thought that was a cool name (hey, it also works for Stevie Nicks).  Anywho, glad you guys will be vlogging again a couple of times a month.  Missed ya!

I vote that you continue to talk about Tila Tequila, only because we really enjoy the criticism and the reenactments. Seriously, Sarah, you made my day by bringing Ashley out! Love it!

    I missed you guys.....

Congrats Sarah! And yay for Malinda's upcoming book/story/novel thing!

p.s What do you think of the name Froley? lol It could be a girl's name. :o)~

    soulzy's picture

So why don't we call ourselves sapphians

I actually think that has a better ring to it than lesbians! I'm going to start that movement!

And I can understand why the Lesbians are upset - imagine people who are advocates for war around the world calling themselves american - I'm sure the American government would sit quietly by for that one!

Also, Malinda, unless we walk around writing it down everytime we want to refer to a lesbian vs. a Lesbian, I'm not sure your copy-editor solution will work!! Actually, it might help people slowly come out of the closet, come to think about it, because they won't have to worry about people hearing that they are lesbian  and we could actually really be card-carrying members!

About the baby's name, as a fellow Sarah myself, I claim a bias of course when I suggest Sarah. If that doesn't go over too well because its not inclusive of the 2 of you, then you can compromise with Sauriah (pronounced 'Sarah')!

And on people getting married, I may be the only one who doesn't feel like I have to be "married" to experience the benefits of commitment - very often, it seems more like a symbol than anything else. But I understand that there should be equality in the symbolism for all - same-sex or not. So congratulations to all of you in CA!

Also, a topic I'd like to suggest - hopefully you haven't already covered it  - "labels in the lesbian sapphian community - you mentioned that someone was 'a soft bull dyke'? I think thats what you said - I was pretty sure you didn't say "softball dyke" - or did you? Can we talk about labels, and why some like it, and other don't? And what all the different ones are? With pictures, to help us really understand what you mean - just like in grade school! I for one hate labels - and enjoy the fluidity of being a whole bunch of different things at different times, or even at the same time. But I heard Sarah refer to being a "bamma" and realised that she adheres to the "butch" label.

And Sarah, you might need an excorcism to remove that Ashly guy from your consciousness - I believe your 'honey-mama' reference was related to that!! Kind of scary!

    I can see I'm rambling a bit! Fun v-log!

    Later,

Love never loses its way home. Remember...its about the journey, not the destination

YAY! Im so happy you guys are back. And congrats Sarah! Every other week ill try to deal with..Im just glad you guys are back, I got knee surgery resently so Im pretty immobile at the moment and constantly looking for ways to amuse myself. So Im glad the vlog is back. :)

As for baby names. My favorite girl names are Zara and Lyra.

I know two very different people named Zara, and both are extrodinary. (I also think the name is lovely) So I hope those names help as theyre added to the pile of potentials. Good luck. :)

    Books, Babes and Bullwhips

Nice to see you both back.  Was wondering where you were.

Congrats on the book Malinda, looking forward to it's debut!

Sarah, much happiness with the news of your impending 'blessed event'.  In honor of Indy's new movie, how about Marion, or for the Hispanic edge...Marianna?  For now, you can call her 'Joan Embryo"  hahahahaha (and a nod to the San Diego Zoo spokesperson)

LOVE the Indy franchise so very glad to have a new movie, especially with Marion back.  She was my fave of the 'Indy Girls'.  Shia (pronounced Shy-a), was in HOLES, another fun film.  I think he'll have a nice acting career.

YAY for the CA marriage.  I wish the populus would just get over it and allow it.  Their arguments against it are so thin.  With the divorce rate so high, whatdo they think will be so threatening to the 'institution' of marriage if gays can marry.  Gee, maybe the stats on divorce would actually go down?  What a concept!

Well, looking forward to more of your offerings.  Take care and enjoy the holiday weekend!

    Topic

Just wanted to suggest a topic for the Lo-Down.  How about discussing the upcoming Summer Olympics in China.  Should Politics and Sports go hand and hand.  Personally, I think the Olympics should not be  politicized.  But I also think the Olympics should still be for amateurs only (not proefessional athletes).

    Congratulations, Sarah!

     OK-baby names.

    Some Polynesian names:

    Kahlia- means 'clear and bright'

    Ema- means 'beloved'

    Mahina- means 'the moon'

    Nani- means 'beautiful'

    Ulani- means 'cheerful and lighthearted'

I've also always loved the name Eden.  For something cute and cool, I love Lucy (no pun intended- it's my Granny's name) and I also like Lizbeth and Leatrice. For somethinng dyke-tastic, I say Marlene after the goddess herself and for something exotic, maybe Shiva, Yasmina or Egypt.

So good to see you back!! Congrats on the baby on the way and the upcoming marriage!!

I admit to watching Tila. I started out basically hating the show, didn't like it last season and not even Dannie could save it for me. However this season I was channel surfing late one night and became too lazy to surf anymore and ended up watching a full episode. I'm hooked, but only on one girl, Brittany. I can't help it she's my guilty pleasure and she's hot as hell! I<3 her.

    Welcome back!

It's nice to see you two back. I was going to start whining! And I'll miss your comments on BSG. Maybe the midseason finale? I assume there's one.

<>And congratulations to both of you! Sarah for the wee baby girl (and wedlock!) and Malinda for moving the book along. I'm sure you'll let us know when we can buy it. Can't wait!

Indy? I really enjoyed it. Harrison Ford still had some moments and Cate Blanchett is hot.

As for baby names, so many ways to go!

Fangirl mode: Xena, Gabrielle, Kara, Leia, Roslin, Willow, River, Padme (or Padma! Mmmm Padma!), Athena, Beru (hee!), Sydney, Irina. And can you name a girl Vaughn?

Queer mode: Xena, Gabrielle, Willow (oh wait...) Ok, Ellen, Portia, Martina, Jodie (oops), Marlene, Amy, Ray, Amy-Ray (whatever, Amy Ray is hot!), Emily, Melissa, Amelie, Vita, Sappho, Lily, Leisha. And Sarah!

Here's a link to a list of androgynous baby names. But please, don't saddle the poor girl with Madison! It's a very nice name, but you can't throw a rock without hitting a Madison (all those mommas who saw Splash at an impressionable age!).

    good to see you again

love you two and the rambling. and congrats to both of you!! of course I also have some favorite female names (lucky you for having a girl, I think they are many more beautiful women names than men names): Anouk, Laura (this name sounds nicer pronounced in German than in English, qué pena!), Marika, Kira and Målin (the a is pronounced like an o, I think it is a Swedish name, at least Astrid Lindgren uses it, she is a great author from Sweden, but I bet you know her. And if you don't, read her to your child, her stories are the best!!). pronounced in English, Marika sounds kinda like America ... are you patriotic? ;) Luca is a great name as well!

I loved Harrison Ford as Han Solo in Star Wars, the old Star Wars movies are great. but I never really got the hype about Indiana ...

croc poc: favorite childrens books and hobbies; would you date yourself? (inspired from the forum and the L Word); ties; baby showers (because they are just SO American, I think, somebody correct me if I am wrong).

    Congrats and btw

    Congratulations!!!=)

    I'm very happy for you!

It was interesting to find out that "BABA" means "father" in Chinese, maybe it will be interesting to know that "BABA" in slavonic languages means "grandmother"...=)

Concerning the names, I've always loved short names, even if you give your child a long name, it is going to be called with a shorter name, so my fave short names are:

    Nia

    Mia

    Yuko

    Rui

Oh, one more thing, it's really good to have you back!!!

    congrats on the baby!

i am a big fan of androgynous names for girls, here are my suggestions: austin, blake, ryan, owen, dylan, aiden, quinn and my own moniker, sloane.

some other beautiful names i love are brooklyn, portia, veronica, arden, harlow, and jade.

    I'm so glad you're back!

Congratulations to Sarah for getting married and soon having a baby round the house (born in wedlock - how many gaybies can claim that)!

Looking forward to the book, Malinda!

Lisa's gone from 'A Shot At Love II' taking with her any reason left to keep skimming through the episodes on mtv.com (which for some strange reason works just fine for me).

Loved the new Indiana Jones movie. Maybe I'm just really good at the whole suspension of disbelieve thing. Also I thought for fans of the old movie there are just enough in-jokes to make it enjoyable even if it wasn't the fun rollercoaster ride it is. My friend and I burst out laughing the first time Marion yelled 'Indyyyy!' because we'd been waiting for it since she'd appeared on the screen. And the pace of the story made up for always knowing what was going to happen next. Very much loved the Area 51 stuff, too.
