News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

The Lo-Down: Episode 2.6

After taking last week off, Sarah P. and I are back with, um, sort of a disorganized and rambly Lo-Down. We know we promised an "on location" Lo-Down but, as I explain in our apologetic intro, we were too busy eating and napping to, uh, work. Therefore, we bring you this slacker edition of The Lo-Down, in which we didn't have time to come up with any fake news, but do devote almost 40 minutes to the Crock P.O.C. We ramble on about topics such as Tyra vs. Oprah, bisexuals and lesbians' views of them, soap on a rope, and Sidney Tamiia Poitier in Knight Rider, as well as continue to discuss Sarah P.'s irritation with public transit.

Thanks to LilyJadeRose and Wendy for topic suggestions, and keep 'em coming! Next week we'll be back to our usual newsy shenanigans.

    Ghetto is Great

I think this episode was amazing since you guys did everything randomly lol, the only negatives i guess would be the lack of fake, hilarious gay news headlines, the missing actual Crock POC and no guests on this weeks vlog. But other than that, super as usual! How about the topic of what are some really lesbianish hobbies...if they exist...

    On location - slacker style

But in a way you were filming on location - the couch working as you're alternative set.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for yet another great episode. In particular the rants about people taking up space in an unresponsible way (this ought not be a problem in my life since I live in a city with aproximately 100 000 residents and there ought to be room for everyone, but alas, that is not the case).

Lo- Down 's Rambs and Rants

I like your ramblings and your rants. I have to 100% agree with you Sarah P about space.  Peeps r so inconsiderate of others around themm b/c they want attention. Public Transportation. I usually stare out into space thinking about am I suppose to do next. Or like Malinda I have book. You got to show us your T-O-T Malinda on how to fold up a paper. Tell us your secerets.

Gayelles?-That's worse. People will think of Gozilla. I vote no to that word. Sounds ugly.

Cool -you two r not knocking on bisexuals. I think lot of Lesbians  who knock on them aren't secure with themselves. I  raise my suspiscions about them. Something going on with you? There the ones I don't trust.

I hope by now you've watched Knight Rider. No vlogger is talking about it since a WOC is Bi or Lesbian.

Soap in a stocking. So nasty. I work in a hospital setting too. You're catching other peeps germs-ughhhh! Give me a pump soap, at least you can wipe off the pump and get enough to lather yourself up.

    grooming on public transit...no kidding

Sarah, I thought you were crazy after the last vlog...until I was visiting SF and watched someone pull an eyelash curler out of her purse on a MUNI bus. Because curled eyelashes are so vital that it's worth annoying people and possibly poking your eye out if the bus stops short.

    P.S.

Slacker-style editions of The Lo-Down are just fine!! This one was great to watch.

    thanks but...

Considering I thought Murdock's name was Animal(I confused his name for Hannibal) until I was 10(that is when my mother corrected me), not really.   They disguised the van enough it probably was white for an episode here and there.

I remember the van clearly because I loved the van and found a Matchbox car that looked like it.

OMG. Better yet, they should do a remake with an all women cast. I would so watch that.

They still show re-runs of the A-team over here and I am a little embarrassed to admit this, but it's still fun to watch (although very dated).

    Bisexual Girls

Well, I don't know what people have against bisexual girls, but I guess it would make sense if there was a concept of the 'double-life'. I mean, both of my ex-girlfriends were bisexual and had boyfriends at the time I started dating them and, you know, slept around a little. Doesn't bother me, though; they weren't my property or anything. But, if anything, I don't understand why gay women would fear the bisexual girl as opposed to, say, straight men being more distrustful. Sure, there's the whole 'two woman' fantasy or whatever, but isn't having a girlfriend dump you for a woman a sincere male fear?

Bisexual promiscuity seems to be another stereotype...like, because they're not one-hundred percent defined to an attraction to your gender, they won't be one-hundred percent committed to you? I don't know. The bisexual girls I dated may not have been committed or anything, but I knew that when I first went out with them, and it's not going to define my opinions of bisexuals forever. I mean, I'm a teenager, and so were they, so there's the whole issue of 'figuring out' the sexuality for them. Being with a girl was a completely new and different experience at the time for both of them so, you know, I guess if other girls have experiences like that, it might lead them to think that bisexual girls are, like, figuring themselves out all the time or uncertain of where they stand with girls in relationships, which just isn't true, really; one of the most sure and together girls I know is a bisexual chick...

Most of all, though, I think it's based on the fact that bisexual people aren't often seen to be a part of the gay community. Like...well, they'll live as straight people, I guess; be part of the straight community. You're not as likely to have bisexual people, sure of themselves or not, going to a gay bar, I guess, or, if they are there, you just assume they're gay or whatever, and so you don't meet them as much, I guess; if that's where you form friendships and meet other gay people, then you don't have those bisexual friends to remind you, "Oh yeah! Stereotypes are bull!" Instead, all people have to go on are ex-girlfriends and TV.

But yeah, as a schoolkid, I have to say that a part of me is rather underwhelmed by bisexuality because every other girl I've met my own age in real life at school who would date chicks is...not a lesbian, but bisexual. I don't have anything against my friends or exes or relevant schoolmates for being bisexual, but it would be nice to have another lesbian, at least because statistics just say I must have been in class with one other dyke and, seriously, it just gets annoying trying to figure out who it is. ;) I wouldn't even necessarily be looking for relationship purposes; it would just be satisfying to know that there are lesbians out there, aside from the hot Uni-student volunteers for ACON...

    Thanks for discussing my topic!

Thanks for discussing my topic, I'll report back on the number of rejections I get! Just joking. The one thing you guys said really hit home, what if they were flirting and I brushed it off as being nice, and there went the opportunity to meet someone special. But anyways, wow this ghetto-lo-down really addressed many of my issues.

Thank you for coming to the defense of bisexual women!

Bisexuality comes in so many different forms but they way I define it, is that you're not in the middle of choosing sides, or choosing to remain in the middle.
Alfred Kinsey researched this (not that I read Kinsey but I have seen the movie) and he talked about sexuality in context of levels of attraction for either sex.

So for me, I am absolutely certain (since I was in the first grade) that I am attracted to women 100%, my attraction level to men is also present, for most bisexuals they are 100% attracted to men as well, but for me it's more of a 60-65%.

If bisexuality can be defined by percentage points, then really there are diverse bisexuals out there, and I'm sorry for the lesbians who have to encounter the 20% women 100% men bi girls because I'm sure that they do exist and they don't set an example for the rest of us.

Sarah, you touched on a good point, if there was a bisexual at a lesbian party who made an announcement that they were bisexual, that is suspicious.

I have to say that if I am at a party with lesbians, everyone makes the assumption that I am a lesbian too, it's an unspoken assumption, however, if I get asked if I am a lesbian, I kind of feel cornered and feel bad when I say that I am not. So my new answer is "I date women". Because if I say 'no I am not a lesbian' the immediate question following (accompanied by a dirty look) is 'then why are you here?' I never felt like a leper before but at that point I really did.

Wow, I missed you guys, and

Wow, I missed you guys, and I didn't even realise it!

Oh Sarah, you are the perfect combo of butch and beautiful:) Ahhh, that smile .... lol, anyways, as a very frequent user of Bay Area public transit myself, and as a person who often finds myself annoyed by my fellow human beings, I LOVED both your rants!

I also appreciated you guys sticking up for us queer women who are also attracted to men. I don't identify as bisexual (I find queer or pansexual to be more accurate for me as I'm attracted to people of all sexes, gender identities, and expressions) but I often sense some annoyance and sometimes downright hostility from my lesbian sisters which makes me sad because truth be told, I LOVE LESBIANS!!!

I have to get myself a copy of Lesbian Woman. I actually found the courtroom part  interesting, but I'm a law student so that probably has something to do with it, lol. Although, the other part about women wearing slacks was quite interesting as well.

I think I've been watching too much Brunch With Bridget while you guys have been away because at the end I half-expected you guys to break out into a pillow fight, lol. Hey! Now there's an idea ... Just sayin, lol.

    Okay, I admit....

I kind of liked it without the fake news. Maybe that's just beacuse the crock poc is my favourite segment. But anyway... on to more important things -

Malinda looks awesome today! The hair, the earrings, the cute shirt, the ever present dimples, the giggling... all right. but I'm just saying :)

I have to admit that if Sarah P was on the same bus or train as me, I would be um, staring. So Sarah, it's not that people stare at you because they're weird and suspicious, it's because half of the women think you're HOT!

And finally, some suggestions - how about something to do with Asians? I guess Chinese Asian-ness, since Malinda's here and she's got all these degrees in women's studies and east asian studies and things. Or other Asian things, I wouldn't complain! What about the American Chinese reaction to lesbianism? The chinese/japanese history of lesbianism is actually pretty fruity. the Taiwanese and southeast asian lesbian contemporary culture is fascinating with its focus on gender-based lesbianism. Do asian, or non-white lesbians kind of have a different kind of community or culture from white lesbians? I would be really interested to know more about the race- or ethnicity-based culture of lesbianism in America, or at least San Francisco. or maybe it's just me, I'll shut up and stop rambling.

oh, and one last thing - gayelle? ugh. it's like bringing sexism back into language again, as though "gay" means male and we need an additional "elle" to identify women. like actor/actress, or poet/poetess - women always seem to be subsumed under men in these language things. GAY!

Ha soap on a rope! My friend (a bloke) brought me a grope on a rope (http://www.boysstuff.co.uk/product.asp?id=13464) for my birthday. It's sort of gathering dust on a shelf because I'm not entirelysure what to do with it. (No jokes please : p)

Soap in a stocking: That sounds disgusting. You guys actually used it?

    Gayelles? Seriously?

What is it with lesbians and their obsession with labels?

    this episode was hilarious!!!

imagine my shock and delight when i tune in to this week's vlog, and there is my name and topic suggestion for all to see!  haha.  well thanks guys for bringing it up.  i have heard every kind of nonsense there is in regards to bisexuals and lesbians...i've heard lesbians say that bisexuals spread all the disease through the community because of the going back and forth, i've heard that punani tastes so much better if has never been tainted by man, i've heard that it's so much worse to be left for a man, i've even heard that if a biseuxal marries a man that it would be silly for her to keep saying she's bi, because at that point she's straight.  jeez.  i've heard some crazy mess.  but i think it's important to note that bisexuality isn't rigid, like everything else under the rainbow flag there is some give.  so bi women are equally attracted to men and women, some favor one over the other a little...but it doesn't change the original label.  i'm 21 years old, and i've known since i was small that i was queer.  although for a bit in high school i thought i was a lesbian but that's neither here nor there.

btw...i love the stock pot!  i like it better than the croc pot...i think you should keep the stock pot, and occasionally for really hot butto issues pull out a frying pan.  either that or a do a vlog in the kitchen.

okay, a stock/croc pot suggestion... why is the use of the word 'vagina' such an issue?  and what are your favorite pet names for it.  personally i like the words cunt and punani..but ya know.  i'd love to see the refined malinda discuss such a thing.

~i am bisexual.  you are confused.~

    I am a bi person....

I would like to vote to change the title BISEXUAL. I would like to to be called MIDDLE. I am going to campaigne to change this because I think BI meaning two or both and SEXUAL meaning sex: 2 + sex = 2sex And I dont have two sex. Right now I am just working on one sex. I also dont have two sexual parts. I just have one. And even if I had sex with 2 other people then that would be a 3 way or tri way cause me + 2 = 3.
I have thought about it and I think changing the name to MIDDLE can make a bigger impact with out the negativity. Like "are you gay or straight?" and I say "Middle." "Ok." Alright I need a nap.

I had a more serious comment but I liked this one better.

    Public Transport

Too strange that you guys started talking about public transport, was only just talking about the whole subject with friends.

The reading newspaper thing makes me laugh because everyone tends to read the metro or another free london paper on the tube, everyone just reads the same thing. I go for the ipod plus book reading option.

But when i've just got an ipod i do then to people watch and try to figure who's gay or not it helps pass the time.

    Through_the_Rye's picture

I'm so glad you guys are

I'm so glad you guys are back! I miss this format of the vlog, it's more fun than fake news (although that's definitely fun too). You guys don't need fake news or even a topic to talk about to be funny :D

Public Transportation. I feel like I've spent half my life on it (D.C. Metro system). And I always play the "gay or not" game , but in D.C. it's slim pickins for some reason. Or maybe I need a gaydar tune-up :) It's better than the Moscow metro though, where even if you look at someone wrong, you get the evil eye. But if some guy tried to read the paper like that on there, he'd get smacked. Invading personal space in Russia is a massive offense.

Thank you for the bisexuality booster! The amount of biphobia in the gay community is so ironic, considering that gays spend their lives being discriminated against and disliked, but some perpetuate the cycle and extend it to bisexuals.

Glad that you guys are back!

    Gaydar

With all this talk of Gay or not games, and you two being the wise woman you are, i don't have a gaydar and was wondering if that could go in the pot, how to tell if someone is gay, really cant tell, and i tend to hang out with untrustworthy straight woman, so they have no idea. So glad you guys are back, doesnt matter how you present it, you always keep me highly entertained (:

    lo down!!!

The whole friendly or flirting thing got me into trouble recently. It tend to be hard to tell when the other girl is flirting when she is friendly all the time. I guess you've gotta look for the signs, or like you guys said, ask your friends.

By the way Sarah, is that a new eyebrow piercing or have I just never noticed it before?

I think you guys should talk about dating within social circles next. Can people get away with it for the most part without hurting their friends? or should all friends date other people and bring them into the social circle?

Oh yeah, and I vote Tyra. She would kick some butt because of her ferocious nature.

Thanks for the laughs and making me want to go to a beach. Ah the life of a midwestrener.
