Last week (it seems like an eternity ago), I launched a vlog about people of color in entertainment with my friend and co-host, Sarah Pecora, and we asked you guys to help us determine what we should call it. Well, you delivered! Although I still have a fondness for The P.O.C. Report, I was shamelessly won over by mlei's utilization of my last name in the phrase "The Lo-Down." So welcome to the first official episode of The Lo-Down!
This week, we talk about three shows we watched last week on TV (last week's episodes, not this week!):
We also continue to provide relevant P.O.C. acronyms at key moments. Speaking of acronyms, last week several of you called us out for misspelling "Philipino Olympic Committee" (as an adjective, it's actually Filipino). Before I get started on my rant about spelling (believe me, I have one!), let me just say that we got the acronyms from AcronymFinder.com, but even then, I got things wrong. The actual acronym they suggested is Philippine Olympic Committee, which does exist. Check out this week's vlog: Submitted by on October 4, 2007 - 8:15am. |

the hot latina
you forgot
Will Yun Lee is on Bionic Woman.
Anyway...
Also how could you forget the Marc lines from Ugly Betty or just his facial expressions are great. I love that whole scene when Amanda confronts her "parents" and they are having a very strange get together. Classic
I just have to say
Before I watch "The Lo-Down", I am already cracking up over Sarah P.'s expression in the photo above the vlog. Too funny. Ok, now off to watch.
OK, another great vlog! You ladies rock. (loved the out takes at the end). As you guys were talking about "Life", and how the two cop partner's chemistry works, I just couldn't keep from thinking about what might have been if the "Nicky & Nora" pilot had actually been able to air. (the pilot episode is available in short segments on youtube, search "nicky & nora"). Now there was some cop partner chemistry (Rose Rollins was in the pilot also).
Ugly Betty has to be the most brilliant thing on TV. Anyhoo, love this vlog. Looking forward to the next installation.
Malinda Lo I think I'm in
2 thumbs up!
I love the Lo-Down! This is a great vlog that I'm going to look forward to every week. I love the "P.O.C." acronyms for each show -- "Please Officer, Call Me" cracked me up!
And as an aside "That's the kind of dirty that don't wash off" was my favorite quote from Ugly Betty last week too! Amanda is my favorite character :)
Keep the Lo-Down coming!

Fun stuff!
I agree, that picture of Sarah is hilarious! You two crack me up and I wanted to yell Get out of my brain! I freely acknowledge that Sarah Shahi in the shower is reason enough to watch the show. Happily, Life is actually really good. I hope it continues. It's also weirdly funny.
I do love Heroes, but it's fairly disappointing as far as female characters go. But since I watch it and awwww over Molly having two (hot) daddies, that's ok! I think it's the slashiest show going right now.
Any time Marc and Amanda show up on Ugly Betty, I'm happy. I just watched the commentary they did for Fey's Sleigh Ride and I think they need their own vlog! So funny.
I've watched the pilot for Nikki and Nora and I wish it had been picked up. The chemistry may have had something to do with them taking bubble baths together. Xena and Gabrielle live on!
Another show I'm not hearing much about is Journeyman. I gave it a try because of Kevin McKidd (I *heart* Lucius Vorenus!) and was pleasantly surprised to see Moon Bloodgood in it. Yay! I don't know how the show will work if you miss the pilot, but it looks like they have it online at the official site. She's not in it that much, but I can't help wondering if Moon Bloodgood is the most beautiful woman on the planet. If the internet can be trusted, her background is Korean, Irish and Dutch. It works for her! I had thought she had a slight First Nations look, but I guess I was wrong.
And Malinda, no Starbuck mention this week! heee! There was a scant five minutes of Katee Sackhoff on Bionic Woman last night, but that'll keep me watching. Is there a support group for this? I should also thank you for all the times you've mentioned BSG in the blogs. It's such a fantastic show and should be watched way more than it is. And... are hot viper pilots "fantasy military"? If so, then I am SO on board!
Thanks to both of you for a fun vlog!
Yay! Another journeyman
Yay! Another journeyman watcher! I think the show is AWESOME, even it does occasionally seem to borrow pretty heavily from the book The Time Traveler's Wife. Hopefully it won't be cancelled before it's had a chance to attract some attention.
Great vlog! Can't wait to hear what you guys have to say about this week's Life
The Time Traveler's Wife
Great Vlog
Last week's video blog went a little over my head because I don't watch the shows you highlighted, but this week's was definitely my cup o' tea. Great job...and I love the new title.
I loved Ugly Betty season premiere--I thought it was the best premiere of any of the returning shows that I watch. You touched on a lot of things in the vlog, but didn't mention Ana Ortiz's performance as the grieving Hilda, which I thought was really touching. A welcome temporary reprieve from the campy-ness of Ugly Betty.
I watched the second episode of Life last night and I think it's earned its way onto my TiVo Season Pass list. I like it a lot and I'm not just saying that because Sarah "Sex on a Stick" Shahi is in it. It definitely breaks the mold of eccentric male cop-passive female sidekick duos that we've had to endure on Monk and Law & Order: CI.
Awesome! You girls are
Awesome! You girls are hilarious, and I love when you get off track, and I agree Ugly Betty is great, I mean how they can be hilarious, heartbreaking, creepy yet funny and witty all in one episode, every episode! It's so good I'm afraid for it
Sarah, you're hilarious...
10/4/07 Watching of the Lo-down
Just found it. Pretty funny.
I think there is an recurring Asian character on TV. It's B.D.Wong on Law & Order, or L&O for all the L&O fanatics out there (my g/f being one of them. "No, I don't remember seeing this episode." "Really, I remember seeing it with you three times, and I'm not that big a fan of this. And you still can't remember the episode?" That's why I love her: She justs laughs when I watch Rosalind Russell in "Mame" for the 80th time, I just snuggle in next to her when L&O comes on.)
B.D. Wong is gay, in a long-term relationship and he and his partner have adopted one or two kids. You go, guys.
I miss Jerry Orbach . . .he of the huge and very expressive eyebrows and the arch comeback statement that occurred just before the first commercial break.
Speaking of L&O, oh, Mariska Harigaty. I'm not into thin, model type women, but she's hot. Too bad she's married. Where's Kathy Bates when I need her?
Anyway, I'll start watching "The Lo-Down" regularly.
"Nicky and Nora?" Where's Asta? I'll have to look that one up.
Sarah Shahi
Sarah Pecora
I am so smitten. I lost track of what you were saying.....................hot hot hot.
An answering machine??
desperate?
it's a joke
it was wrong
Look, I
...
Obviously it has been taken seriously by a number of people. Like...those who have a medical degree from a university in the Phillipines.
_________
"If you go flying back through time, and you see somebody else flying forward into the future, it's probably best to avoid eye contact." - Jack Handey
Ok I won't say that it was
Ok I won't say that it was wrong (just saw the bit on CNN this morning), but it was in very poor taste and perhaps reflects the view of some. It shouldn't be taken out of context though. That is, it should really only apply to that one character on that one fictional show.
I see your point though, and I think that people in general should not speak from their limited view of the world. Caribbean people get some stereotypes thrown at them, but often little is really known of the people or the countries. For instance, Cuba has one of the best medical practitioners in this side of the world, but a lotta people don't know that.
Anywho, back to the light fun stuff...:)
Well, I don't necessarily
Well, I don't necessarily think ethnic jokes are the most tasteful, but on the other hand, they are fairly common. But here's the thing that gets me...there's like a million Polish jokes and most people don't take them seriously at all, but then make one joke about a minority and people are all over you. Obviously, a TV show like Desperate Housewives is not trying to make a sweeping declaration of Philippine incompetence, it's just taking the cheap joke.
Like this vlog, btw. Y'all are hi-larious!

I love the Lo-Down!
Great u two. The name has grown on me. Thanks Sarah for flipping the meaning behind the Lo-Down I didn't see it that way. Are you going to do a Jill Bennett reenactment of episodes. If so,Sarah, u will make a great reenactmentor(made up word I know)
I just wish this vblog was longer. Are you going to have guests too on your vblogs?
Blessings
Oh great stuff I love it
Oh great stuff I love it :) Also you guys seem to be really in sync with one another; you feed off each other, and this is good. Sarah, you can't be dissing Heroes though, I'm sorry. Lucky for you, you already have a number style points, but one more infraction like that, I may have to take away a point...yeah...
.....I look forward to your other reports. Oh and the acronyms, nice :) Witty, attractive women always get me :)
My New Favorite Line From "Ugly Betty"
From tonight's episode:
Hilarious!
Loved your vlog! You two are hilarious...now I'll have to add watching this vlog on my to do list :)
Oh and that I think Sarah is H.O.T. to the point where it is a little distracting ;) Could someone help me out and tell me what it says on her t-shirt? "I'm not a beaver..." then?
I think it says
Incest jokes done right
Ladies, excellent work! You both have a great rapport with each other, it's fun to watch.
Malinda, I like you what you said about Asian men on tv - it is really good to see the representation at long last.
I love the Black Oil Power LOL And Dania Ramirez is SMOKING. She and Kerry Washington in She Hate Me, damn. That was some quality viewing.
Sarah, I loved your Heroes re-enactment! Please do more re-enactments in the future. And research 'montages' lol
I look forward to future vlogs. Rock on.
High marks for the Lo Down!
Loved your commentary.
Have not caught LIFE yet but hope to now that I hear your reviews.
HEROES is terrific. Not all eps can be fancy dancy but they do move the story forward...and OMG there's just 2 words if nothing else about Heroes.....ALI LARTER! HUBBA HUBBA
btw, the 'power' that Dania's character has is to cause a horrible plague/sickness on those she is near, and her brother is the antidote.
UGLY BETTY....is such a beautiful show in all areas.....concept, writing and acting. The characters have the right amount of camp and seriousness. And ohhhh, Vanessa Williams...my long time crush. I'd do her in burlap! Love those eyes.....mmmm and that voice....mmmm and everything else about her! ::fanning self::
Keep up the wonderful work ladies!

it was amazing....and now i want to watch Life.
i do have to disagree with sarah though....heroes is amazing.
