Papi dashes for cashThe L Word's Janina Gavankar has been cast in the comedy pilot Dash 4 Cash (The CW), a single-camera comedy that follows six teams racing for a cash prize in a reality TV show. Yes, that's right: It's a reality/scripted TV mashup.
Gavankar is set to play Melaie, who is described as: "26, beautiful but tough. She's an ex-beauty queen and newlywed who may already regret her choice of mate and has been attending marriage counseling. Ball-busting, clever and ambitious, she frequently grits her teeth at husband Gerry's bone-headed decisions. Winning Dash 4 Cash is extremely important to her; she believes it will lead to a job as a correspondent for Access Hollywood." You know what this means? Maybe if Dash 4 Cash gets picked up, Gavankar will no longer be available to play Papi! Cross your fingers. Submitted by on April 6, 2007 - 12:00pm. |

Cross your fingers?
Cross your fingers for what?
I wonder... :)That she will be available or not??
awww dont be evil. papi is
You got me wrong
I just didn't understand how Malinda's comment was meant.
Did you?
Hmmmmm
I don't know...in the beginning I couldn't stand Papi, but after a while I thought she added a nice element to the mix. She had great chemistry with Helena and Alice...
oh well...I've learned not to like any character of the L word too much. Once you do they leave or die!
It's an anti-Papi comment.
Ummmmm....
I'm Latina and I was not at all offended by Papi...I thought the actress did a dead on portrayal of MANY of the lezzie Latinas here in LA...besides, her Spanish was a whole lot better than Carmen's!
And get off your high horse about The L Word...I'm NOT the show's biggest fan, in fact, this is the first season I've watched it. And it's not terrible. The people who bash this show are taking it way too personally...The L Word doesn't represent the lesbian community. It's a show about a group of women...it's light fluff for a Sunday evening, not too much more.
Thanks
A change might be good
It'll be a little refreshing to see Ganvankar play someone opposite of Papi, at least we still have Tasha.
yall r just hatin
Ouch!
Maybe if Dash 4 Cash gets picked up, Gavankar will no longer be available to play Papi! Cross your fingers.
Ouch...that's kinda harsh...unnecessarily, I think. The character's the problem, not the actress. I hope that Janina Gavankar returns to the show, as I think she was starting to get legs under her as a part of the cast.
Plus, I'm not sure how you bring Tasha back without Papi (they're best friends, after all) and I definitely want Tasha back.
Good and bad
I too am Latina and don't think Janina does a bad job with the accent at all (and I am really picky when it comes to this!). I'm not sure why everyone thinks her accent is bad. It's actually quite good.
That said, I do think the L Word is pretty awful. It's the lazy writing that makes it so. One particular example is the way that none of the characters seem to be able to think of any more creative words to use when adding emphasis to any diatribe/monologue/dialogue/conversation than the f-word. In real life, people use a much more varied vocabulary when expressing emotion. But all the supposedly intelligent characters on the L Word inexplicably revert to the one word. Lazy. But worse than lazy, it seems like someone is trying really hard to get the viewers to think she has a handle on culture and is cool, trendy and hip because her characters curse one-wordedly. Instead of "cool," though, it comes off like it's trying too hard.
The criticisms I most think are valid are about the lack of storytelling ability rather than that of portrayals of "typical" or "real" lesbian culture. The latter could never be satisfied as there is no such thing.
But I do think all the actors are actually good and it's too bad their talents are wasted.
agree and disagree
While I don't agree with you on Papi's accent (I'm sorry it is dreadful). I do agree with you on the lack of creativity and laziness of the L word writers. It does appear that whenever anyone is trying to prove how serious they are they drop a F* bomb. I know these people have a thesaurus laying around somewhere, and can find some new words to throw into the dialogue.
I also agree that it is pointless to want a portrayal of a "typical lesbian" or "real lesbian" culture. Lesbians are too diverse to try and fit them into a nice little box to portray on tv. The actresses are doing the best with what they are given. I don't think many people can disagree that the cast (including Janina) are extremely talented, and if it wasn't for extraordinary acting abilities (they are able to pull off some terrible, terrible lines) the show would have been off the air a long time ago.
p.s. Tasha can't go, so Papi can't go. >:o(
Aw...
I like Janina Gavankar. She's pretty hot. Even though Papi's accent grated in the beginning, I've warm up to her character a lot. I don't even mind the accent and it seems to fade in and out at times. Papi's friendship with Tasha makes her more three dimensional rather than just a token "player" they made her out to be. I hope Janina stays.
Re: the writing. It's really not that great. Many of the funniest moments have been ad-libbed by the actors and many of the plot lines and scenes the actors come up with themselves. I watch TLW and I'll continue to watch but I hope it gets better.
Maybe Carmen will come back for S5 and I'll get my Shane/Carmen!
Dash 4 Cash -- duh.
1. Is a copy of sorts of new series DRIVEN.
2. Sounds horrible as a concept. Tha Papi will return.
A2 Connection: Lesbian Social Network
halfway agree
papi ok
Why cross our fingers?
Papi? wtf.
I don't care if the L word is poorly written, I watch as I would watch any other "telenovela" if other telenovelas had hot girls loving,living,fucking(eachother),breathing,la,la,la...and whatever else that annoying song says.
And I don't mean to be rude but: Spanish (Castilian) is a language not a nationality or ethnic group, in any case it would indicate that the person is a native of Spain, and even then, the correct way to say it is Spaniard. Latino is a term used to reference natives of Lazio(Italy) or a country of Latin descent , iow, including Italy,Greece,Portugal, etc and not just confined to Cuba,Mexico,El Salvador, etc. Hispanic is correctly applied to Spaniards, their culture, and Spaniards only. We, those of us who are natives of Latin America, countries conquered by Latin countries(including Brazil) within the Americas(named so in posthumous homage to Americo Vespucio) are Latin American. Those of us who are natives of Spanish (Castilian) speaking countries in the Americas, are Hispanic-American (not including Brazil). And the only people who listen to Flamenco on a regular basis are Spaniards who are not Mexicans, as you will find they fervently defend. Oh yeah and Tapas and Sangria(I seem to remember Papi drinks sangria) are Hispanic and not Mexican either. And I won't even start to get into why Mexican American is so terribly wrong...
That said, I have nothing personal against the actress, but I must agree, the possibility of her leaving will probably reduce the risk of me having a cultural breakdown while tuning into the dyke drama next season.
