The new "X-Files" movie finally gets a name

It's official: The new X-Files movie, which lands in theaters July 25, will be called I Want to Believe. As many people remember, the phrase was imprinted on a poster that Mulder (David Duchovny) had in his basement office.

Series creator Chris Carter told the AP that "It's a natural title. It's a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. 'I Want to Believe.' It really does suggest Mulder's struggle with his faith."

The movie will not deal with the series' mythology — the often convoluted plot involving a government conspiracy, little green men and alien babies — but rather will resemble the standalone episodes in which Mulder and Scully investigate a paranormal event or crime. Carter said that this movie aims to bring in both new fans (who were probably too young to watch the scary show in the '90s) and satisfy X-Philes. "The reason we're even making the movie is for the rabid fans, so we don't want to insult them by having to take them back through the concept again," he said.

In the past, episode titles have given clues to an episode's story line, but in keeping with the tight security surrounding leaks from this new movie (the select few who were allowed to read the script had to read it in a locked room fitted with surveillance cameras), even the title is vague. And while the phrase "I want to believe" brings back fond memories (of basking in the glow of my computer screen reading tons of fanfic — I admit it!), I'm not sure it's a title I entirely love.

Then again, I thought the title of the first X-Files movie, Fight the Future, was also weak. Maybe it's just tough to name a film, since the title has to project an appeal for the masses and suggest what the movie will be about (e.g., Live Free or Die Hard is honestly an awesome sequel title). Some of the episodes, obviously, had weak titles as well ("all things," for example, even though it was penned by Gillian Anderson and included a lesbian kiss in the background, was in my opinion a weak title — but then again, I hate it when people write in all lowercase).

X-Files episodes with titles that I loved include "Squeeze" (episode 1.2), which perfectly indicates the nature of the beast Mulder and Scully are dealing with; "Our Town" (episode 2.24), which gives a sorta funny, sorta creepy spin on the play; "War of the Coprophages" (episode 3.12), because it cracks me up with its pseudo-seriousness; and "Pusher" (episode 3.17), which also perfectly encapsulates a monster.

I'm realizing now that I could go on forever, so I'll leave it at that. What do you think of the title of the movie? And do you have favorite episode titles from the series?

Okay, "War of the Coprohages" scarred me for life. I saw it when I think I was about eight by accident; my Mom was doing my hair and flipped to it during the cockroach crawling into the guys arm-scene and I swear two seconds later I saw a cockroach pass by the TV. According to my mother, this was all in my imagination, but that did not stop me from throwing a hairbrush at the TV and cracking the screen. Needless to say, my mother was not happy.

The name sounds okay, but I can't imagine Mulder having a crisis of belief, especially with the history of the show.

    I agree...

I agree with the titles on a lot of the episodes but I must say "all things" is one of my favorite episodes... As set to Moby's 'Play', it came across as very peaceful. I wish that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson both had more to do with the wrting and directing. David Duchovny co-wrote quite a few but he wrote and directed "The Unnatural" which I thought was really great; another of my favorites.

Scully: "Time passes in moments ... moments which, rushing past define the path of a life just as surely as they lead towards its end. How rarely do we stop to examine that path, to see the reasons why all things happen, to consider whether the path we take in life is our own making or simply one into which we drift with eyes closed. But what if we could stop, pause to take stock of each precious moment before it passes? Might we then see the endless forks in the road that have shaped a life? And, seeing those choices, choose another path?"

A movie related to the X-Files!!!

There could be nothing better than that!!!

I am a total X-file fan! I will watch the movie, the tittle seems kind of odd, but appropriate at the same time. Since it was a poster we saw in the series, so it goes :D .

Cant wait for the movie! I bet is going to be as good as the series! even though I dont think an hour would be enough for all that!

    Works for me.

I have no idea if "I Want to Believe" fits with the movie plot or not, but it was a common enough phrase on the show that hearing it again makes me tingly. Maybe that's what they're going for: the nostalgia factor.

    I like it

Sounds cool and I'm happy the movie is going to be like one of the episodes with that one monster going on.
    fallon ash's picture

    eh

I think the title is very boring. It's the tag-line we lived with through every single episode for 9 seasons, and now it's the title of the movie, too? Woo-frickin'-hoo. (And yes, it does bring up the image of Mulder, and that's another reasong I'm not that into it. It feels like it's reverted back to Season 1 when Scully was a tag-along side-kick and it was All About Mulder. I liked seasons 4 and 5 the best, lots of mythology, and quite a lot of equality going on.)

That being said, I'm looking forward to this movie something fierce.

And as for episode titles, I never really paid much attention to them. I wasn't very familiar with the internet at the time when I got into the show (and I also wasn't proficient enough in English to properly understand the fansites), and so most of the episodes for me were just numbers. The titles being something I then learned of after the fact, my favourite titles will always be tied together with my favourite episodes. Although I always enjoyed saying Apocrypha, but I don't even know what it means, or what relevance it had to the episode itself.

    I cannot fucking wait!!!

I cannot fucking wait!!! I admit I was a little disappointed with the title, but it's fitting after all. The best episode titles were "The Blessing Way", "First Person Shooter", "Jose Chung's From Outer Space", "Beyond the Sea". Best episodes were Darkness Falls, "War of the Coprohages", "Jose Chung's From Outer Space, Ice, Die Hand Die Verletzt.

I have to keep this post short because i tend to ramble about The X-Files

    As long as X-Files

is coming to a theater near me...I don't give a rat's a$$ what they call it. All I know it is by its name the X-files. I don't care for the title of it. All I will remember is X-Files the movie part II.

    Lookin' forward to watchin it!

    I think that there are

I think that there are titles of episodes that I like just because I like the episode! The first one that sprang to mind was 'Small Potatoes', which I just think is cute, and so is the episode... and I agree on 'Unruhe' and 'Jose Chung's From Outer Space' :)

But there have been some really naff episode names - all of the ones that (and I love The X Files, don't get me wrong) seem a bit pretentious. It must be hard though, to have to please with episode titles, but then Buffy seemed to do it alright...

I didn't like the title 'Fight the Future' and I'm not sure how I feel about 'I Want to Believe' and I was one of those cool people that had a copy of the poster... oh yeah ;) But, to be honest - I'm just glad there's going to be more Mulder and Scully based action. Woo!

    Oh Baby

This movie is gonna be sweet. Im STOKED! I like the title, reminds me of the opening sequence; the part of the episode when I'd get all excited about spending time watching that show that never disappoints.. even when it -was- cheesy, hey, who cares cause Mulder and Scully perfect together, always great actors, and always easy on the eyes. Mmm X-Files.

Oooh, the X files is/was my shit. How bout "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose", "Bad Blood", "How the Ghost Stole Christmas", and "Milagro". Those are some of my favorite episodes. Oh, "Syzygy" was a good one as well.

Man, now I am going to have to have an X files maraton with my cousin, I haven't had one in a while.

Those are some of my favorite episodes! Along with 'Small Potatoes', 'Paper Hearts', and 'Pusher'. :)

I can't wait for the movie!

P.S. Has anyone seen the Gillian Anderson spread in the new Maxim??? If you haven't......... you must.

    Titles I loved include

    * "Dod Kalm" and "Memento Mori" - fit the atmosphere of the respective episodes perfectly

    * "Beyond the Sea" - worked on a number of levels for me: the 'Starbuck' thing, Captain Scully's undertaking his last voyage and the idea of those who have passed on waiting for us ' somewhere beyond the sea'

    * "Syzygy" - I was absolutely fascinated by the title ... mainly because it took me ages to figure out what it means and to this day I'm not sure how to pronounce it (what - I'm but a poor foreigner wrestling with the English language)

    * "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas" - just as bizzare a mix between the silly and slightly scary as the episode itself

    * "Jose Chung's From Outer Space"and "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" - not sure why, just like the sound of them

As for the movie title - I agree with Gorgeous Nerd: they are probably going for nostalgia. I still immediately think 'X Files' whenever someone uters the words 'I want to believe' (No matter in which context they are said) and I suppose there's are a lot of people who feel the same way. After that long a break it might not be the worst idea to choose a title with this strong a connection to the show.

    X-Files is love

I've always been a fan of the way they title the episodes. Some shows are better at titling than others (ie "Friends" & "Bones" have great titles) and XF always had awesome titles, especially the ones in Latin. One of my favorites is the two parter "Nothing Important Happened Today" which is the understatment of the century as you watch the episodes.

I like the nod to fans that the new movie title gives and the end part of the trailer ("Let's just say, I want to believe") really makes me think we should be less surprised than we are haha I think they should have called it "Believe Again" which is an awesome tag for the movie - and would indicate a loss of belief, which "I Want To Believe" alludes to. I think "I Want To Believe" (although a mantra for Mulder AND Scully) is too much of a mouth full... It just doesn't roll off the tongue - at least Fight the Future had alliteration.

This show was really my first love as far as TV goes and I am counting down the days until the new movie - poor title or not lol I would call it "Crapfest" and would still watch episodes in excitement for July 25.

I had that poster for YEARS!

Ah, memories. I have so many favorite episodes..as far as serious ones, 'Home' and 'Gethsemane' and 'Tithonus' are probably my faves, but for funnies, i'd say 'Bad Blood', 'Small Potatoes' (because I was a shipper!) and 'Arcadia' (.....because I was a shipper!!!)

    That poster...

I made an A3 copy of that poster myself, colouring it in and everything.  I was, am, and always will be a huge nerd when it comes to The X Files.  I get all bubbly inside just thinking about it.  Now I own the box set and have found the fanfic I can get a little XF happy-buzz any time I like!

Dana Scully is my religion ;)

    Fave "X Files" episodes.....

I would have to go with my top two fave episodes as "How the ghosts stole christmas" & "Millennium".

"How the ghosts stole christmas" starred Lily Tomlin & Edward Asner - do I need to say anymore? Just outstanding performances by these wonderful people.

"Millenium" because that's when Mulder & Scully officially kiss!! Something we had waited for way too long. =0)

I'm excited for the NEW movie to come out!! Whatever title they decide on it's fine with me -- all that matters is that Gillian will be in it & all is better in the world.

My very favorite saying from the show: "Mulder, it's me!!" My license plate holder on my car has that famous saying on it. Yeah, I know...... =0)

my straight friends think i'm crazy

because in one episode of x-files called "kill switch", i saw scully as being attracted to the goth computer nerd chic.  i swear it's there!  watch scully's reaction when the computer chic asks if she should type with her tongue.  the reason i have loved this show for so long is the relationship and chemistry between mulder and scully, but i think that gillian anderson would play around with the idea of scully feeling attraction for another woman.  maybe it's just wishful thinking.

as far as titles go, i've always loved titles like "effigy" and "amor fati (love fate)" because they added so much to the story. so i was a little dissappointed with the title, but it does not make me any less excited to see the movie.
