"Battlestar" Friday: Who's the fifth Cylon, already?

Last week on the premiere of the fourth (and last) season of Battlestar Galactica, we learned some interesting things:

  • Starbuck is alive! Or is she?
  • Rookie pilot Sam Anders, Starbuck's husband, who has also just found out that he's a Cylon, can stop an entire Cylon attack with just a glimmer of his mechanical eye! Or can he?
  • Gaius Baltar can save dying children by praying to God! Or can he?
  • Starbuck knows the way to Earth! Or does she?

Even if the premiere raised more questions than answers, I was pretty psyched by the episode. And tonight's episode, "Six of One," promises that "all will be revealed." Those who have a free lunch hour can even watch the episode online at noon ET and get a jump on the rest of us.

Meanwhile, here are some photos from tonight's episode, along with my totally uninformed speculation about what they might mean. First up, Lee "Apollo" Adama is still in civvies but is saluting like a military man.

Then there's this photo, in which he looks like he's thanking the president for something — maybe it involves that job he mentioned last episode.

So maybe Lee's going to be working for President Roslin? Meanwhile, we have these photos of Kara "Starbuck" Thrace being escorted, forcefully, somewhere:

Anybody who's seen the previews for tonight's episode knows that Starbuck goes around screaming that they're going the "wrong way," meaning they're moving farther and farther away from where she thinks Earth is. Obviously she's a little worked up here.

The main question, of course, is who is the frakking fifth Cylon? I'm hoping it will be revealed tonight. Some folks have speculated that it's Starbuck, but I actually think it's probably not Starbuck; that would be too obvious. I think it has to be someone major, though, and for that reason, I'm wildly guessing that it might be President Roslin. Remember those visions she had of the opera house that she shared with Number Six? That's my only reasoning for it. If Laura Roslin and the Cylons are having the same visions, there's some connection, right?

Feel free to share your own speculation below, but please be sure to carefully label any spoilers in the comments!

    It's definitely a good guess...

[no spoilers -- I only menion past episodes]

....Laura Roslin being a cylon. She seems to be connected to Caprica & Athena and Athena's baby. Very strange. But Baltar's got his own weird connection with Caprica (and vice versa), and we're all pretty sure he's not a cylon.

I agree with you about Starbuck not being a cylon. It would indeed be too obvious. There's just no way.

I keep thinking back to when Lucy Lawless' cylon kept killing herself so she could have those visions - remember when she saw the faces of the final five, and she recognized them & was surprised?

    Final Cylon

I remember Three/D'Anna saying something like, "It's you. I'm sorry, I didn't know." when she was looking at what I assumed was the final cylon. That made me think that is was somebody she knew personally and had mistreated them in some way. At the time, my first thought was Anders, since she had tried to kill him on Caprica. I also thought of Tigh, since she had provoked him during 'Final Cut', but both of those were revealed later. Now, I'm inclined to think it's either Roslin or Tom Zarek, both of whom she and her fellow cylons wanted executed on New Caprica. I would love it to be Roslin or just for the pure F'd upidness of it, Cain. As far as I know, Three never even met Cain, so I really doubt it will be her. As long as the final cylon isn't say, Hotdog, I don't really care. :)

    YAY!

I have no frakkin' idea who the cylon is or what the heck is going on with Starbuck but I'm sooo excited about tonight's ep! YAY!

And yes, Roslin does make sense...

    Oh, yes

How great would it be to have Madame Airlock herself, Laura Roslin, as the final cylon?
    cosmiccowgirl's picture

    Roslin

I don't know if she's a cylon, but I'm going to be pissed if Roslin gives Lee a job after what he did to her last season.

    starbuck a hybrid?

I agree that Starbuck can't be the final cylon, but could she be the first human-cylon hybrid baby?  What do we know about her dad?  Apparently he composes music a lot like Philip Glass, but other than that, was he around at all during her childhood?  He clearly wasn't protecting her from that evil mother.  Laura Roslin could be the final model because of her visions, and Starbuck could be the hybrid because of her visions...And her ability to survive and possibly regenerate?

And while I'm at it, if this has "all happened before, and it will all happen again," perhaps the survivors make to earth and rebuild the human race, only to participate in another human diaspora and retreat from earth to the twelve colonies...?  That seems like a lot to happen in the series, especially given a spoiler I heard unexpectedly last week.  I can't manage to get my limited knowledge of html codes to block it out, so I'll just end this comment before I anger droves of BSG fans.

    The 5th Cylon

A teaser poster for Season 4 was released resembling the Last Supper. Moore said that no one in the poster is the 5th Cylon. So that rules Roslin out. Unless he was lying :o

    My hunches are:

    Duella
    Gaeta
    Doc Cottle
    Billy
Helo(but he's in the poster too so..)

Or that Irish Lawyer who helped defend Baltar.

    Sarjex's picture

    I think RDM is

    I think RDM is lying.

I remember back in the day when Rob Tapert swore up and down that he wasn't going to kill Xena either.

    Never trust a TV Producer

Oh yeah, I remember that! Missy Good, a Xena fan fiction writer and personal friend of Rob Tapert, told us Rob promised her that Xena wouldn't be killed and when she was killed off in FIN, we felt totally shocked and disillusioned.

As for BSG, I still think Baltar is the fifth cylon and the producers are full of cr*p.

    My guesses

#1 - Kara's mother, who always told her she had a destiny, just like Leoben did.

#2 - Admiral Cain.  The hybrid in Razor said that the 5th of the final five was seeking redemption; maybe Cain fits? This is the quote from the hybrid:

"Soon there will be four, glorious in awakening, struggling with the knowledge of their true selves. The pain of revelation bringing new clarity and in the midst of confusion, he will find her. Enemies brought together by impossible longing. Enemies now joined as one. The way forward at once unthinkable, yet inevitable. And the fifth, still in shadow, will claw toward the light, hungering for redemption that will only come in the howl of terrible suffering."

#3 - Ellen Tigh.  The Tighs never had kids that we know of, and Cylons can't have kids amongst themselves.  And she could use some redemption as well.

I already missed the beginning of the streaming version, so I won't be able to watch it until Saturday night.  Wah!

    GreenBean2's picture

    Cool!

I hope it's Cain or Helen Tigh. Helen Tigh had a deviousness to her that was wicked. And we all know that Cain was just twisted.

    Kara's mother would be interesting.

Only thing that I can think of to rule these people out is that 6 said that all 5 were on board Galactica, though the 5th could be in hiding.

    Sarjex's picture

    I've always thought Gaeta

I've always thought Gaeta had something skeevy going on...he'd be a perfect Cylon. Close enough to the big wigs to know what was going on but not enough of an "alpha" to call attention to himself...and like all Cylons seems to be drawn to Baltar...even when he's breaking his heart.

Also like the Dylan 4...he wound up being a collaborator in helping the resistance.

However...Gaeta doesn't have the emotional punch that being the final cylon revealed would have. I understand RDM has told Katee Sackoff explicitely that she is NOT a cylon... but he didn't tell her she wasn't a cybrid either. I'm betting either her dad or her mom is a cylon and she's the first mix.

Who knows though. Season 3 was such a mish mash mess...but hopefully with the writers strike and all they've had time to put togther a rock solid season 4 that actually does answer everything.

    "cybrid"

    ooo, I like that!

I find myself not totally hating the cylons.... I am really quite taken with the 6s and to a lesser extent, the 3s. They really challenge what it means to be "human" - because in many respects they could arguably be considered human!

I really like the theory of Admiral Cain being a cylon. Even though there was so many things to hate about her character, there was always something so compelling about her! Tigh's wife would be interesting too. I could totally see a more powerful and competent (and ruthless!) version of her - and that would be so unsettling and awesome.

Thanks so much Melinda for being so on top of things that you knew about the streaming of today's episode. I am so happy that I got to watch it early =D

    I reckon Starbuck is a

I reckon Starbuck is a prophet because she is the first hybrid. Her father is probably the cylon (whose name escapes me) who held her captive on New Caprica.

How many Cylons get cancer? So that rules out Roslin in my book.

If that poster there is true, I'd say it could be the Doc Cottle(sp). I correct myself I reckon it's Tigh's wife after reading that article. She'll be back.

    pfl's picture

    just speculation....

Just realized something, that may or may not be important. The raiders stop their attack when they come into contact with Anders (in episode 4.1, He That Believeth in Me) because they seem to recognize him on some level. This may have no significance, but this is an interesting parallel:

"The Six has proven herself difficult to predict, and impossible to trust. An incarnation of Six (named Caprica Six as she was the cylon who obtained the codes from Baltar, allowing the attacks on the colonies), while stranded in a bombed building on Caprica, committed the first incident of Cylon-on-Cylon violence seen in the series. This was apparently to save the life of a Human insurgent (Samuel T. Anders) who was facing certain death." -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylon_(re-imagining)

.... and we now know that Anders is one of the Final Five. Perhaps she too on some level recongized a reason for not letting him be killed.

    GreenBean2's picture

    Spoiler:

    Spoiler:

I heard a spoiler about a new Six model getting it on with Anders, but don't know how credible that is.

I don't know if a hybrid can be the final model. If so there's 2 hybrids right now, but Moore said something about we've seen the 5th Cylon in season 2. The hybrids were both alive in S2 methinks. Hmm I'll just stick with my original list, cos it could be anyone now.

If Starbuck is a hybrid that would be mind warping for her!

    pfl's picture

    hmmm

I did hear that a new 6 is coming called Natalie. I wonder if it's connected to the Anders thing that you mentioned!

I think it would be awesome if Starbuck is a hybrid. It would explain so much, and maybe it could bring humans & cylons together in the end (eh, maybe I am being too much of a hippie about it!)

    GreenBean2's picture

    I don't think you're being

I don't think you're being too much of a hippie, I can raise you a hippy card cos:

Am I the only one that thought for a split second that the imaginary Six and Baltar are one and the same and are in fact...God?

And I wonder if we'll get any subtext between 6 and Roslin. Wishful thinking.

    pfl's picture

    woah!!

That thought never occured to me! Ha!! Could be =D

    SPOILER:

I wonder what it means that a version of Baltar appeared to Baltar in tonight's episode (4.2)???

    GreenBean2's picture

Why did my brain decide to

Why did my brain decide to skip the part where you wrote down 'SPOILER'. lol

Damn you brain. I missed the live stream, I forgot we're 5 hours ahead and not 4 here.

I have no idea what's going now. :(

Does that mean that 6 will appear to 6.And will 6 be stroking 6 like 6 strokes Baltar. So many questions!

    pfl's picture

    oh my!

6 stroking 6! That would make for a whole other show.... (Uh, I'd prolly watch it.)

Hope I didn't give away too much when I said what I said. If you think of it, lemme know what you think of it! (wow, that was all very repetitive!)

    sorry double post.

    My 2 cents

I think having Starbuck be the 5th Cylon is just too easy.  My suspicions are President Roslin.

3 1/2 more hours and counting until BSG!  Starbuck...<sigh>

I bet you a million dollars Dualla is... she is sooo the last Cylon. And I bet she's knows it.
    base's picture

    I think

I think it's Dualla too. She'a also connected to someone/something of importance in BSG ie Lee and CIC, just like the other final five ie Tigh to Adama, Anders to Starbuck, Tory to Roslin, and Tyrol to the deck crew.

Anyone know about what time they post each new episode?
    beazerkat's picture

    scifi.com

Based on my experience last night, I believe they are posted at 2:00 AM eastern time.  I checked at about 1:55 AM and the episode was not there.  I checked again at 2:05 and it was there.  Of course that meant I had to stay up and watch the episode :)

I have no clue about the 5th cylon.  It seems like it shouldn't be anyone obvious like Baltar or Starbuck, but then I would feel ripped off if it was someone like Dee or Gaeta.  Roslin has been acting very odd but I'm still willing to chalk that up to her treatment.

    whos the fifth cylon?

Lets think out side the box for a minute… We all know that the final Cylon is someone whom we haven’t seen yet, and for this to be the last season of battlestar the writers should throw the viewers a carve ball.. That the fifth cylon is someone you would never expect someone you would never guess in a million years… Starbuck, Roslin, Tom Zarek, and Baltar are to easy of a guess on whom the fifth cylon is..

My guess is Zak Adama… yes I know he’s dead but how many time have characters from this show returned from the dead.. and this would be a great plot twist to end this show with

    prediction

Just a casual viewer here so i'm not familiar with all the intricacies but i'm gonna go ahead and make a 5th cylon prediction.

    - Obvious choice - Balter .

-Intresting and unexpected choice - Laura Roslin ( but she has cancer so i'm suspicious) .

    - Unexpected choice that no one would suspect, but who i'm thinking it is - Dee. Given more evidence i might change my mind.

P.S anybody find it extremly ironic that in 4.02 the cylons refer to the raiders as 'tools' and state that they're not supposed to evolve. Considering, that's what the humans probably said about them.

    TT_11's picture

    from the first time they

from the first time they brought up the five other cylons i thought roslin was one and i can remember thinking it would be so ironic if tyrol was a cylon cause he went completely over the top in hating boomer (i mean seriously dude what is wrong with being in love with boomer, honeslty even if she killed me i'd be one lucky person), lone behold i got that one right.
