"Guiding Light" 9/18 mini-cap: All's well that ends well

Well, Otalia fans, this is the last recap. It’s been a wonderful ride. I have enjoyed having every one of you in the back seat. Though Guiding Light was traded in for cash for clunkers and what’s behind curtain #3, Otalia will live on. Thanks to your request there is now a written history. Albeit, not a very reverent one, but a humorously fitting one. Thank you for all your support.

Olivia and Natalia have their arms around each other and are attached at the hip. Could be my mind schmootz, but it appears they’re basking in afterglow. Personally, I never believed that network BS about them waiting because they had never been with a woman before. These are not two teenagers fumbling around in the dark, these are two experienced women, and lust is lust. It’s the same old bike, just get on and ride.

Otalia and Emma stop off before the wedding to see Philip. Beth comments on how close Olivia and Natalia have become. Philip says she has no idea. Actually, none of us have a freaking clue.

The female family of three drops by Rafe’s in hopes he wants to ride as a family to the nuptials. Rafe explains that he already has plans, but he will save a dance for Emma. Natalia hugs Rafe and says he is a good boy. There is that word again: Good. If I never have to type it again, it will be too soon.

The happy threesome stop by Alan’s hospital room. Emma says her entire family will be at the wedding including her dad and her brother, Rafe. Brother? He looks at the blissful couple at the door. Nat smiles in confirmation. Olivia puts her arms around Natalia and proclaims they are a “family” — which along with the euphemistic words “together” and “couple” means they are having sex. Alan’s heart monitor speeds up, but this news is not what kills him.

Alan wants to know if Emma is happy. Of course she is, just look at her two mommies. Most would be down right giddy! Alan says that’s all that matters. Emma runs out to get a lollipop from the nurse, whose name is probably Kiera.

Doris walks into the wedding looking fabulous in a smart green frock. She is running a little late because she had to stop by Emma’s school and pick up her date. Mayor Wolfe’s party affiliation is now confirmed, as she is dating a fetus.

She introduces, Jamanda (Jamanda? Really?), the bartender from Towers, to Ashlee. Ashlee grabs Doris and hugs her. Score mom! Ashlee is so happy Doris is allowing her in. Doris spots Jamanda trying to serve Olivia and hurries to her side. She is Olivia Spencer after all. She’s gay, not dead, which means she now has the other half of the population to vamp.

Continuing the coming out tour of Springfield, Otalia pull up to the next venue, Reva and Josh. Reva congratulates Natalia on having a little girl. Olivia strokes Nat’s belly. Natalia reiterates how excited they are; I’m thinking it’s not all about the baby.

Otalia leave to find Emma. Reva says she is happy that Natalia is such a good friend and really seems to care about Olivia, after all, she doesn’t have many friends. Josh tells Reva they are more than friends, they are a couple. It’s Reva, so look out here it comes. She merely smiles and nods. She is happy for them. Life is too short, and there will be other days of our lives.

The wedding on the Love Boat is over and “The Newlyweds” have a kissing contest. Once again, Otalia is eclipsed by a game show. For obvious reasons, Liv and Nat don’t enter the kissing contest, but if they ever have a hand holding or a forehead bumping competition, they will wipe the floor with these amateurs.

Everyone is dancing at the reception. There is Otalia cutting the rug, doing the CBS Sapphic samba — one step forward, one step back, repeat. Persistent in his quest for Springfield’s most unavailable women, Frank is dancing with Doris. Doris seems to have kicked her date to the curb. She must have gotten tired of cutting up her meat for her.

Otalia are walking along the beach and run into Josh. He says it’s nice to see them together. Olivia jests that it’s every man’s fantasy — not to mention two-Goose-away women. Josh thanks Olivia for being his friend and explains that he is leaving town for awhile. Josh asks Natalia to take care of Olivia and be there for her when she’s ready to let the “girls” out. Natalia says no problem.

Nat and Liv are in the kitchen packing lunch for Rafe, the first of many meals ready to eat. Natalia is worried about him. Olivia assures her he will be fine. Nat wants to know how she can be so sure. Olivia smiles at Natalia and says she has faith. Liv didn’t need Father Ray to learn faith makes all thingspossilble; it was the cookies.

The bus arrives for boot camp. Natalia is ugly crying. Rafe, in rushed clarity, but clarity nonetheless, asks Olivia to take care of his mother. Rafe hugs Natalia, says he loves her, and gets on the bus to be the best that he can be. Olivia comforts Natalia as she cries. Something tells me there was a kiss here.

Olivia, Nat, and Frank are at the park discussing baby stuff when Frank gets a call that Daisy has been accepted at Berkley (the real Berkley? Daisy?), and as luck would have it with Doris’ new ties to San Francisco, she pulled strings to get Ashlee into writing school and both girls will go together.

Frank leaves Otalia at the park. Liv asks Natalia what she wants to do. Of course, “IDK”. This is on-screen but use your imagination. I can give you my top 10, and clothes are not involved until #11. Anyone notice a theme of this recap? I am sexually frustrated, but it’s with their sex!

Otalia begin to talk about life and love. Olivia says she has gotten everything she has always wanted, but she feels bad for Frank. She wants to do something to make him feel important in the baby’s life. Oy vey. Here we go. I knew this was coming.

Otalia find Frank and Blake in the park. They have just discovered the eHarmony in being online. Blank? Flake? Semantics. Otalia tells Frank they have decided to name the baby Francesca. It’s such a “good” name. (I know, but that’s really the last time.)

Fast forward one year. Rafe is back from the army. DADT? Natalia introduces him to his baby sister, Frankie. Next is a musical montage of families — of all kinds. It’s a nice package — and it’s wrapped.

    The finale was one major

The finale was one major helping of lame!  Yeah I said it, I think I'll start watching the first three seasons of Bad Girls now.

Thanks for the hysterical and snarky recaps, they shall be missed.

    SubtextRules's picture

    Agreed!

Sportslady, thanks for having the nerve to say what so many of us wont. I agree with you all the way. The finale from an Otalia fan's perspective was a major snooze fest. But for long-time fans, it's just what the doctor ordered. And if you don't mind, I'd like to join you in re-watching Bad Girls. Helen and Nikki were and still are the best lesbians to come out of television.

I love Otalia and I love your recaps! I wish you had recapped them when they were still doing their pre WoD dance.

Btw, reading NC-17 Otalia fanfic helps taking the edge off the sexual frustration ;) Just saying :P

Thanks for all the great recaps. They have been part of what made Otalia such a great ride, even though CBS put on the brakes for the last part of the Otalia story #FUCBS !

And now @crystalchappell (who aims to keep the spirit of Otalia alive, as it physically should have been on venicetheseries) needs some help on the tweeterwall competition for Ulimate World Ms Twitter. You can vote repeatedly - about every 10 - 20 minutes

I'll miss the recaps more than the show

I haven't really watched the show, but I've LOVED the recaps.  This one was the best by far. Pure genius.

And I want to know, did Olivia start with the thumb ring before she came out, or was it afterwards?  Because if she had it before it's no real surprise she's ended up with a woman. ;)

    campgrrls's picture

    Thumb ring

The thumb ring is new.  Crystal Chappell tweeted that the ring (which one?) was her choice for the character to show she had changed or was changing.

Thanks.  I follow Crystal Chappell on Twitter, but I must have missed that.

As a huge Otalia fan, I will

As a huge Otalia fan, I will say this, the finale was not just for us Otalia fans, it was for all the fans of the show - some of whom have been watching this for over 30 years in some cases. They gave tribute to old characters, new characters, wrapped up as many storylines as were humanly possible in one hour.

As much as we wanted to see more Otalia, to see intimacy, closeness, to see them have more screen time... I feel for other "shipperers" ... who've been waiting for their couple to get a chance to reunite for a long time. Reva & Josh... that was a long time coming and I'm really happy they got their happy ending just like Otalia.

So no, it was not lame in my opinion. It was a good effort to close up 72 years of history in an hour.

Would have I liked to have seen the girls kiss? Absolutely, but I'm thinking it was not about the writing or time, they had plenty of opportunity to kiss but for some reason weren't allowed to. I don't think it was the writers' fault. It was either P&G or CBS or both that put the kibosh on it. It would have been as simple as replacing one of their signature "head bumps" with a kiss and not take up more screen time than that. So clearly, it was up to TPTB and they decided not to give us what we wanted. I choose to blame CBS, not the writers, but that's just me.

Still, I am happy that Otalia got back together and were happy in the end. They can live on in the land of fan fiction from now on and I'm happy with that.

Goodbye Guiding Light and Otalia, welcome Venice!

    happykt's picture

I'm crying that Otalia is over

    double post ... sorry
    happykt's picture

I'm crying that Otalia is over

I'm crying right now because I just saw the end of Otalia, the greatest lesbian love story I've ever seen in my life on TV or in the movies.

    I AM ALSO CRYING BECAUSE:

--CBS and GLs owner and sponsor, P & G, wouldn't let this couple kiss yet allowed these two women to kiss and frak members of the opposite sense. (And let every other hetrosexual cast member kiss and frak each day.)

---just about everyone on GL got MARRIED this week and KISSED but Otalia, so much so, I felt a deep rage.

---Otalia was the most touching, tender and romantic lesbian storyline I've ever seen in my life but I know that it could have been so much better had the powers in charge stopped repressing the natural progression and expression of the Otalia storyline.

---I don't have hope much will change for gays in America for years to come regarding seeing originally scripted TV and movies that positively portrays women in love, who are mentally healthy, romantic and sexual beings.

I'm so crushed right now that I'm going to take a nap (even though its 3:30 in the afternoon) because I'm simply overwrought with despair over the end of Otalia and what should have been .... <<SOBBING INCONSOLABLY>>>

    damn right you our

Oh my sentiments completly.  Loved the eye staring at the table scene!!! and i have evrything i ever wanted line, but than they had to screw it up again with F.    Anger and rage again!!!!   And when i close my computer it will be sadness of wath was being taken from us.
    cosmiccowgirl's picture

    best for last

I think this may have been the funniest recap yet. As for the sexual frustration, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that this storyline was the biggest clit tease in the history of the universe.

    Quote:
She is Olivia Spencer after all. She’s gay, not dead, which means she now has the other half of the population to vamp.

I so like the way you think.

I'm glad that GL and Otalia are over. I think the way this couple was treated proved that GL was not ready to move into the 21st century, and it was time for it to go.  I wouldn't take back watching, because by some miracle the first part of the storyline was really good, and I wouldn't want to not know the character of Olivia. I just wish I had started watching after Mr. Hyde had taken the reigns so I would have known to keep my expectations low and wouldn't have been so horribly disappointed.

    Right on M. Dawson

Absolutely spot on commentary. What a load of bullshit that two grown women, one with a very well developed sexual drive and the other a healthy young woman, would fear sexual intimacy. Please we're not that naive. I agree, in my mind Otalia were touring SF basking in the shine of afterglow (postcoital). It's not called the farmhouse of love for nothing.Ellen Wheeler's shameful interview was full of obfuscation and just plain dumb.Yes, she wished that the show could go on so that Otalia's relationship could develop and change? What? So is Ellen Wheeler, the director, the real censor? Or was it the suits at P&G and CBS? Wow, Ms Wheeler is just as guilty as Frank and Rafe for infantilizing Natalia (and Otalia).

    DonnaB's picture

I'm just sayin', is all ...

Ellen Wheeler has been the Executive Producer and if not for her, this story would never have come to the screen. I credit Jill Lori Hurst too and she says when people do that she points them to Ellen, to Ellen's heart as where this story came from.

And, of course, it was Procter & Gamble or CBS or both or factions at each.

The CBS Daytime person, Barbara Bloom, who had never wanted GL cancelled on her watch & who had a great fondness for the show, thought the show was getting a pick-up and was surprised as everyone else to learn it had not - on April 1st. Yeah, there was stuff going on - corporate stuff.

But, yes, today, all the kissing and hugging just made it stick out even more that Natalia and Olivia are denied that. I began wondering if that was something that the show "let happen" on the last day - being as obvious as they could possibly. There's some nuance and irony there.

On soaps, you make em wait & make em wait & then make em wait some more. But, you DO NOT cheat them out of a payoff. (Soaps used to know this)

I've been a soap fan since the late 60s. I've been a lesbian all of my life although I didn't know what the "difference" about me was for a long time. I have adored Crystal through DOOL, a little of OLTL's Maggie and Olivia. CC is so savvy. She just gets it.

This week has been bittersweet for me. I lived through the cancellation of a P&G soap 10 years ago, as a fan and a fan activist. But, today was just bitter. The build-up to the end has been good. Today, only one line saved it for me - and made me cry - and that's when Bill Lewis told Fletcher Reade, "I miss Ben." But, it only matter for people who saw the end of Ben Reade.

I'm tired of being angry, so I'd rather just watch the finale for Josh and Reva and be happy with that. (Who says gay folk can't enjoy watching the occasional straight couple?)

    Jamanda

Orlagh Cassidy tweeted that the name was a shout out to 2 producers, Jennifer and Amanda. I guess it's their shipper name, LOL?

I was pleased with the ending. Yes I was disappointed that Otalia never got to share a kiss, but I still say that what wasn't there is far outweighed by the romance of what was there. I kinda liked the way they sat there and stared in each other's eyes for a long beat today. That was almost more intense than a kiss. Almost.

I've loved this show since I was a kid, and I love these 2 characters and these 2 actresses, so I'm good. I will miss the show like crazy, but they made the most of their chance at closure with a touching and bittersweet goodbye.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Doreen's picture

    Sad

    Crap,

    "It’s a nice package — and it’s wrapped."

Now you've made me cry again.

Everyone can bitch and complain and laugh at the no sex no kiss as much as they want, and I am shattered by the open homophobia as well, but I really, really was in love with Olivia and Natalia..and what ever they did, whatever did it..they made me fall in love, right along with them.

I think that a lot of the second hand sexual frustration  is also a part of that, and I just wish it weren't true, that these days a love story could be that openly censored..in our faces..

Today, i have to let go a little of my dream of love and family, too.

But I am just so grateful to have seen what could have been possible..what is possible.

    What should be normal.

And it is not just a kiss.

But two women in love wherever, whenever.

Sharing what all people in love share.

Today a big light has gone out..for the Lesbian community especially.

Hope of them not being censored,of all things good and right, and the depatrure of one of the last Lesbian couples on TV right now.

Dark times these are..dark times indeed.

    bluebuddha's picture

    Been there done that....

I felt the same way with All My Children.   They openly censored and tortured the lesbian characters as well.

American television networks can not be trusted to handle lesbian relationships yet in daytime or primetime.

It really drives home the point that lesbians are second class citizens, even to gay men (i.e. Brothers and Sisters).

    shelby's picture

great recap ... going to miss them

The last lesbian story on American TV slips away and we all wait for the crumbs on House and Grey's sad.

Was it perfect - no - but it was a great story with moments of whoops and corporate interference.

Loved each and every re-cap... thanks M.

    bluebuddha's picture

    On the bright side

Despite the lack of intimacy at least Guiding Light fans never had to deal with rape, a convoluted baby swap storyline, off screen break ups and a relationship with a transexual.   Nothing against transexuals, but it was used to as a plot device for a lesbian to be involved with a man indirectly.

I feel for Otalia fans, but you all don't know what torture really is unless you followed the way All My Children handled its lesbian storylines.

The sheer ugliness of it all cured me of ever watching lesbians on soaps again.   Not even Bianca's relationship with Reese could make up for the years of inherit homophobia from ABC daytime.

Anyway looking forward to those two actresses on Venice.

R.I.P. Guiding Light.  You were an American institution.

    JollyRoger's picture

    "All's well that ends well"...

... oh yes, my thoughts exactly before the last ep today. Shakespeare plainly knew all about GL:

"Our remedies oft in ourselves do lie
Which we ascribe to heaven. The fated sky
Gives us free scope, only doth backward pull
Our slow designs when we ourselves are dull."

"Oft expectation fails, and most oft there
    Where most it promises."

    "Praising what is lost
    Makes the remembrance dear."

And there she was . . . wearing a hat!

One year later the 'lesbian disguise' is still in use, Liv must have been spending a lot of time with Doris over the past year. Yeah, the ending of GL was really lame and very forced. The lack of a romantic kiss is a kick in mouth to all us gay and staight fans/viewers who just wanted to see a love story, period. We saw a love story but it lacked being a lust story too. They should have been all over eachother like any new couple in love . . .

If only I could film what I'm projecting in my mind--now, THAT would be a story!

Otalia = EPIC FAIL, but the rest was great!

As a long time viewer, I felt as though today’s episode was just what the doctor ordered. I was so thrilled to finally see the happy endings that so many characters richly deserved. Jeva (Josh and Reva) and the 4 Musketeers were by far my favorite parts. If I were a straight audience member, I’d say this show delivered like Dominos!

Now as an Otalia fan, I felt extremely let down. But it’s not like I expected anything less. Really the last couple months have been nothing but the same old, same old. What little Otalia scenes we did receive once again felt like they centered around Frank or “the man” as I prefer to call it. I kind of feel bad for Crystal in a way. She’s been on the show for 10 years, decided to stick with GL even after her contract was up, and this is what she got for her troubles.

And if I hear one more person refer to Otalia as the best female, same-sex love story on television (because we can’t call them lesbians!) I’m going to scream. This pathetic, half-assed attempt at whatever the forke you want to call it, was no better than watching a show for the subtext. The only difference was they acknowledged the fact they liked one another. Beyond that, there was nothing grand about this story. Sure GL chose to keep them together. But if you were an outsider looking in, all you would have thought was hey there are two really great friends! I agree with Sportlady on this one. After wasting my time with Otalia, I’m forced to re-watch Bad Girls season 1-3. That my friend is a storyline that will forever go down in history and rightfully so!

So to Crystal and Jessica, I say thank you for putting your heart, souls, and support into Otalia. I’m only sorry GL and CBS didn’t have enough balls to do you or the fans justice. I look forward to seeing what Crystal has in store for us with Venice.

    I stopped watching this show

I stopped watching this show awhile back. I just knew it wasn't ever going to go anywhere but hand holding.

What the sad part is Spashley got more action then these two got and so did Bianca. 13 on House got some.Hell even Greys Anatomy is at least showing a real lesbian couple so far Arizona and Callie haven't had to hide from everyone or not express their feelings. At least them couples got more of a story then the crap GL has put fans through.

I guess I'll be dead before the networks on regular TV will ever give a lesbian storyline the same treatment they give a hetrosexual couple.

And to me as long as we accept this kind  of storylines for lesbian couples things will never change and by saying the was The Greastest Love Story ever just feeds the networks saying it's ok to treat them like this. That way they the homophics are happy so are some of you by saying that  was a great love story to the networks it's a win win for them because alll they have to do is give a implied lesbian couple and that will make the gay community happy.

    In my world..

It was good to see old friends and have a happy ending for many. And well Otalia did kiss, but with GL being short on time, money and well cameras it was missed. The cameraman ran out of film. He looked the other way. Tripped over a cable on the ground. No matter. We all know what happened. BTW, they did get married during a vacation but not enough budget money to send a camera and well the home video was a little shaky to be added to the show.....

Thanks for all the great articles. They were fun to read.

I got over the no kissing

I got over the no kissing thing a while ago, as soon as I realized it was probably not gonna happen anyway and I was gonna end up with an ulcer if I kept stressing over it every single day. But this last week was just disappointing to me. They got back together and suddenly there was no story for them anymore. It was just about them showing up everywhere in Springfield together holding hands, and if you ask me, that's just stupid. They barely had a scene alone, just the two of them, and I really missed that, cause their scenes alone before the whole pregnancy fiasco were so amazing! =( It seems to me that things kinda lost their magic since then. Oh well, I'm looking forward to Venice, though! At least there's that! :p
