Lori's Hot Rocker ChicksI spend most of my time hiding my iPod from Sarah since she tends to "borrow" it for my '70s, '80s and 90s music. But she recently found where I'd hidden it and teased me about one of my playlists, "Hot Rocker Chicks." What can I say, the women rockers in this playlist are hot! Since I can't find a way to talk about hot rocker women on our video blog "She Made Me Watch This" (we only discuss TV shows and movies), I thought I'd share my Hot Rocker Chicks playlist here. As a pre-emptive disclaimer, I don't consider these guilty pleasure songs, but if that keeps me from looking too shallow, then they are! "Kiss Me Deadly" by Lita Ford
Sarah and I were in Palm Springs with scribegrrrl when scribegrrrl posted "These '80s sisters are twisted" and added "Kiss Me Deadly." Sarah had to listen to scribegrrrl and me go on and on about how hot Lita Ford was in the video. I'm not a fan of Sarah's guilty pleasure song, "Close My Eyes Forever" by Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne — the only Lita Ford song I play and watch is "Kiss Me Deadly." Have you seen Lita slink around at the beginning of the video? She's in black. Has long, blond hair. And she's hot! I'm a sucker for blondes with long hair dressed in black (that's how Sarah got me). Here's the video:
Heart I love Heart. I loved their old look from the '70s. I especially loved their look in the '80s when Nancy Wilson became a full-blown hottie! And Nancy and Ann Wilson have aged gracefully, looking fabulous today.
But enough about how hot I think these sisters are and back to my playlist — here are the Heart songs in my Hot Rocker Chicks playlist: "Barracuda" Chrissie Hynde, The Pretenders I love early Pretenders music. And how cool is Chrissie Hynde? She's fronts the band and plays guitar. At least I'm showing some substance here after the Lita Ford eye-candy fixation.
My favorite Chrissie songs include "Brass in Pocket"
Stevie Nicks Karman, Jill Bennett, scribegrrrl and I are all crazy about Stevie Nicks because, as Karman has often said, Stevie is "smokin' hot." Lesbians in general seem to love Stevie Nicks.
My favorite Stevie look? Stevie in early '80s when "Stand Back" came out.
Is it just me, or do you also get stressed out that Stevie might fall off that treadmill in the "Stand Back" video? My favorite Stevie songs are "Stand Back" and "I Can't Wait":
Amy Winehouse
I finally downloaded and added "You Know I'm No Good" to my Hot Rocker Chicks playlist. I'm not sure how long this song had been out by the time I finally decided to download it — after hearing it a million times on Sarah's iPod. Is Amy Winehouse a rocker? No, but she acts like one — and she has that sexy singing style, so I had to add her.
Melissa Etheridge I love classic Melissa. I remember when her first album came out — the album cover was plastered on the walls of all the lesbian bars and dance clubs in 1988 and 1989.
My all-time favorite Melissa songs include: "Similar Features"
Dilana Sarah loved Rock Star: INXS and Rock Star: Supernova, and she made me watch the shows too. We were literally hypnotized after watching Dilana's "Ring of Fire" performance.
Between the Egyptian influence in the music and Dilana's outfit, which reminded us of a sultry lesbian vampire, we had to become Dilana fans (until Dilana blew it and never recovered, but that's another story). The Dilana songs on my playlist include "Ring of Fire" and "Zombie." Storm Large Sarah and I love Storm Large, who's also from Rock Star: Supernova.
Our favorite Storm song? "Anything, Anything." We also like "Ladylike":
Avril Lavigne Frankly, I can't explain why I like Avril Lavigne's music; I just do. I have all her CDs and actually listen to all the tracks, which I rarely do with albums anymore. I'm currently playing "Girlfriend" nonstop, which gives it a five-star rating in my Hot Rocker Chicks playlist, even if it's probably more than pop than rock. Here's the video for "Girlfriend":
So I've just outed my iPod playlist. I'm sure some of you have similar iPod mixes with more hot rocker chicks included — let me know about them in the comments! Submitted by on August 16, 2007 - 5:22pm. |

Just so you know.
Just so you know, your Hillary Duff fixation is now only a distant memory ;)
You have a rockin' taste in music, Lori :) "Bring Me Some Water" has gotta be Melissa's best song. Ever.
[I have Avril's first album and I, too, don't know why]
Look over there!
MLE
A little story...
Back in the day, when I was still clueless about the facts of life (let's call it that way, shall we?), I saw Melissa Etheridge on tv and I got hooked. It was her VH1 Storytellers presentation with cowboy/girl leather jacket and all that.
Boy, was I naive. But intuition is everything, though, no? So I've ordered -internationally- all CDs available. A while later, when I got them, I was amazed by the "red" CD, hated Brave and Crazy, had mixed feelings about Never Enough, and enjoyed both Yes I Am and Your Little Secret, that had just come out.
Bring Me Some Water was mind blowing, and still is. But later on, when everything fell into place, I found out to be head over heals in love with Brave and Crazy and No Souvenirs (from B&C). They grow on you. :)
And I would KILL to have the t-shirt Tammy Lynn Michaels was wearing on TLW, in that bar scene. :P But then I'm probably the only one who remembers, lol.
ETA: Lori, how do you feel about B&C? :)
"HOT ROCKER CHICKS"
I have got to say, there are so many "HOT ROCKER CHICKS" that I couldn't write them all here. I love that fact is that they are rebels with a cause, shoot aren't we all in our own way too? If I had to pick one that best describes how I feel about the world through her lyrics it would be Melissa Etheridge. "ROCK ON"!

Frankly, I can't explain why
Frankly, I can't explain why I like Avril Lavigne's music. A truer word has never been written. I doubt anyone can explain why they like her music. Heh.
As for hot rocker chicks the current playlist includes Regina Spektor, Cat Power, Jenny Lewis (from Rilo Kiley), Joan as Policewoman, Karen O (from Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Guillemots for their bassist, Arista, who is absolutely gorgeous. None of them are particularly rocky but they're all hot!
www.myspace.com/stopstartstall - acousticy music type stuff.
Pat Benatar
Hand me a tissue....
Nice blogger name there
Who could forget.....
Ok if we are indeed going to go back in time a bit.....then who could forget Annie Lennox or Joan Jett. I agree we can't leave Pat Benatar off the list either. Joan doesn't fall into my category of make me want her kind of hot.....but she falls into the category of rocker, and that song "Black Leather" sure used to get the lesbians all riled up back in the day. But Annie, now she could rock a stage....videos didn't do her justice.
Surprised you left out...
Passionworks
Something from Heart's Passionwork album? Or is that from one of the compilations?

7 Year Bitch - The Scratch
Stevie Nicks - I Can't Wait

Belly - Feed the Tree
The Graces - Lay Down Your Arms
PJ Harvey - Down By the Water
Cunts With Attitude - Only Straight Girls Wear Dresses
Okay...some of these might not be considered rock...I dunno...I'm genre challenged. I have other playlists for "acoustic and country girls", "jazz and blues women", and "disco and dance divas"
Sorry
mmmmmm....Lita Ford......
Let me pause for a moment and reflect.... Okay so I was gonna mention after Sarah's blog that the duet with Ozzy was NOT my favorite Lita...but then that was a guilty pleasure list and well Lita is a lusty pleasure... Let us recall the Runaways and early Heart for a moment....I was turned on to both at the same time by my new friend who lived across the street...back in OhiO...shall we also add Crissy to the old rocker memories!?! Anyway, listening to these gals always makes me wonder if maybe Rochelle my friend was a little on the lesbian track and I just missed it...lol I love your playlist Lori and if I had a your ipod...don't think I'd give it back...unless I had your computer...hehehe
BTW...Like The Way I Do is my all time favorite ME song...thanks for the clips of all the gals too!
Missed opportunity
Oh LA, I'm thinking you missed an opporunity there with Rochelle. Bummer. We don't refine our "straight girls on the verge" radar until our late 20s. That's when my radar kicked in! I can spot them a mile away now and I'm sure you can too. Perhaps you weren't supposed miss that opportunity after all? Oh, the road less traveled.
I know what you mean about Melissa's song as a ME song! When her first album came out, I remember feeling tormented at that time, so the songs could have been my soundtrack!
Isn't that a setting on GAYdar?
All Time Favorite Rocker Chick
The one and only Joan Jett in "I Love Rock and Roll"
Special Mentions:
Sheryl Crow: Favorite Mistake
Scandal f/ Patty Smythe: The Warrior (yes that make-up at the end is beyond cheesy but damn that girl has some pipes)
Bangles: Heavy Shade of Winter
Pink: Pretty Much Anything She's Done
And yeah, Avril is pretty cool too, although for the life of me I can't explain why ;-)
the concept was good...
The problem is...
Hey!
Bring on your own list if you think Loris is to tame or to old.....
Don't yap like puppy. Bark like a dog and show us what you got! ;)
I did, babe
Its just as Vash said, there just ain't any. Most of the list cant remotely be called Rockers and, looking at other people input just confirms it.
I mean Tori Amos? Natalie Merchant? Beth Orton? Sheryl Crow? Rockers???? Dont get me wrong I like most of them but maybe its a translation thing - does rocker chick = girl with guitar in the States???
Looking at the others I'd probably add Skin from Skunk Anansie as a rocker.
I love Heart!
Nobody on this planet can out sing Ann Wilson. It pains me whenever someone attempts to do a Heart cover because very few singers these days (especially the girl singers) can reach deep down and emote through their voices like Ann can. She's the only one I've ever heard cover "Love Reign O'er Me" and make me cry all over again like the first I ever heard the original song.
Aside from Heart and Stevie Nicks, I really like Janis Joplin and Grace Slick...who are suspiciously absent from the list...
Other then those, that's about it for me as far as women singers are concerned. I was never able to get into Melissa Etheridge or kd lang. Yes I know...I'm a bad lesbian.
My favorite bands of all time are The Who, Queen, and Pink Floyd.
More Supernova
As long as we're talking about "Rock Star: Supernova" chicks -- what, no love for Patrice Pike? She's totally hot, and queer too. OK, I am biased; I've known her for years. Still, she can absolutely wail like some of the other rocker badasses on your list. For anyone interested in checking her out, her myspace is www.myspace.com/patricepike. Yes, I am totally shilling. Hey, we need to support queer artists, right?
My favorite Storm song also was "Anything, Anything." But #2 for me was "Surrender." That was killer. I loved her through the whole show. I dug Dilana at first, but I got a bit tired of her voice. And she could not write a decent lyric to save her life. (Remember the songwriting challenge debacle? That turned me off for good.)
Patrice
Patrice's music owns my soul. Whether its her Sister 7, Blackbox Rebellion or solo music, she has me completely. The Rockstar stint held some of the most excrutiating hours of my life. It was hard having her so out there for mass public scrutiny in a reality tv setting. Her depth and spirit was completely obliterated on the editing room floor. Its hard wishing someone success yet wanting to keep them safe in your little corner of the world, but Patrice is one to explore the world not hide in it.
Patrice Pike is one hot rocker chick, and I highly recommend catching her live show if ever you can. When she is on stage she will capture you in her gaze and it will be all she wrote. Plus, hot lesbians are never in short demand around her. Where she goes, we will follow.
She is HOT and sounds good too!
I've caught her show live when my friend Melanie Susuras opened for her in Denver at a fun club called the Soiled Dove (the club was in a building that was former 1800's brothel). Very cool place...but it's something else now...sigh. Between Patrice and Melanie...lesbians and bi chicks took over the usually straight meat market club...at least on the main floor where the shows were held! Patrice was awesome...as was Melanie. I'd love to see them on the same ticket again! Of course, I got in for like half price or something being a Melanie Susuras groupie...lol
For Melanie's stuff go to www.msbmusic.com (shameless plug) she has a new CD coming out sometime this fall.
Nothing beats a woman with a guitar rockin' out
Cool blog. You have have made me smile & am now listening to Stevie Nicks at 2am! Coming off night always a killer but at least you've cheered me up.
Don't know what it is about Avril but I too have a thing for her she doesn't have one bad song. Patti Smith, Pat Benatar and Siouxsie Sioux all rock. PJ Harvey and Shirley Manson from Garbage are the greats from the 90's. I totally agree with Stevie, Heart, Avril, Chrissie H, the ones I know! Amy Winehouse new cd rocks was not into the jazzy thing she released before.
I don't know all of the artists on your list but thanks for the video so I can get an idea. I've totally missed out on Melissa Etheridge that was the first time I've heard a song of hers in the clip. Am I a bad lesbian? Will check her out.
Going international....

Ok there are many more.... but i think that's it for now from me...
Guano Apes
I LOVE Guano Apes!!! "I believe I've been living in a lie"
My top rocker chicks are:
- Tori Amos
- Fionna Apple
- Guano apes
- Alanis
- Shakira (HER EARLIER SPANISH WORK!!! trust me it's a whole different concept)
- Melissa
- Gwen on her ska rocking Tragic Kingdom No Doubt days
On a lighter tone Tracy Chapman, Sara, SIA... and my FAVORITE Rachael Yamagata!
On an older tone Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Blondie
That's Great!
Guano Apes rocked.... too bad the band broke up. But on a more happy note, Sandra's first album is due next month!!
"Rain"is also a great song or "open your eyes" but i can't really decide which song is my favorite.
On her homepage you can listen to some snippets already. (http://www.sandranasic.com/)
I totally agree on Shakira and Gwen. Still when i was in a Shakira concert earlier this year she pretty much rocked too!
:-)
I totally third Guano Apes! Caught them live twice in Portugal, and they totally rock!!!! Thanks for the link to the website, will be keeping an eye out for her solo!
"For most of history, Anonymous was a woman" - Virginia Woolf
Sandra's new song...
When i looked up Guano Apes I noticed that in 2003 with the new Album "Walking a thin Line" the Apes got more international attention like in Portugal, Hungary and and Italy... They certainly had the potential to achieve much more... And Sandra's incredible powerful voice gave the music a certain edge...
Btw I found the vid of her new song... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGMA6zEiFu4
I think some moves definitely look '80ish
Ha! Remember having such a big crush on her! I certainly wonder if she isn't a lesbian too or at least bi.
I totally fell in love with when i saw her in the Rain vid on VIVA. Look at her abs!

Luv ur list
I absolutly love your list. Altough, I can't understand the language, your list is more my cup of tea than Lori's LOL.
Thanks for charing
Love that list too.
I am happy that you like it.
The language is German (Juli and Silbermond) and in Tarja's case sometimes Finnish, her English is sometimes hard to understand because not only has she the cutest of accents but she is a trained opera singer and have you ever really understood what an opera singer actually sings? Me not so much... and do enjoy I a good opera play once in while. :D
I think what makes Loris list so different from mine is that we grew up in different places (obviously), I grew up several years later and i like my rock more harder and more rocker
Also i think not every girl with a guitar is a rocking chick... but that is a whole different story.
If you have a question concerning one of the songs, I'd be delighted to try to answer it.
Maybe i can interest you in another band which i have shamefully forgotten
Wir sind Helden fronted by Judith Holofernes the not hard rock but one of the most creative bands at the moment
Denkmal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igUyDQPPPao
The Geek (shall inherit the earth) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG_OZ7kUNYs
Aurelie (the story of a french girl flirting in berlin) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovT2KEEhpjo
Gekommen um zu bleiben http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vwjUy87SJ8
Nur ein Wort http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvdT8XsHes8
New links
Thanks for the other links. I could defenitly understand when you said that I think what makes Loris list so different from mine is that we grew up in different places (obviously), I grew up several years later and i like my rock more harder and more rocker , and even more with your comment on Women with guitars.
I don't listen to rock as much as listen to soul/funk/jazz, but when I want some rock, these sound are more of my cup of tea.
It would be to much if I ask you to translate. But I would gladly welcome some new links, if you want to send some.
Thanks again for sharing
A new link
I often get teased for my
I often get teased for my ...women who rock... playlist (the ellipses make it the top playlist on my Ipod for convenience) - Ani, Etheridge, Joni, Missy Higgins, Antigone Rising, Maria Mena, Dar Williams, Tracy Chapman, Annie Lennox, Indigo Girls, Liz Phair, Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, Jill Sobule, Natalie Merchant, Meredith Brooks, etc. The funniest part was that my guys friends called me sexist so the next playlist i created was ..men who roll..
~ cuz i have had something to prove
as long as i know thers something
that needs improvment
and you know that every time i move
i make a woman's movement. ~ Ani DiFranco
um i think i love you?
Well,
now I feel I've got to pimp my iTunes rotation of essential rocker chicks: Throwing Muses (and with them, Tanya Donelly, Belly, and Kristen Hersh must follow), PJ Harvey, Dressy Bessy, the Breeders, Beth Hart, the Donnas, Aimee Mann, Concrete Blonde, Elastica, Garrison Starr, (early) Liz Phair, Mary's Danish, Veruca Salt.
And yes, my cultural music receptors died right around 1998, if it's even necessary for me to mention that. :)
Some nice stuff there
Not sure about the Supernova people though, wasn’t that like the rock version of American Idol. O_o
Since everyone already mentioned Joan Jett, Patty Smith, Blondie, Stevie Nicks and PJ Harvey I’ll add some of the recent ones. Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Meg White from the White Stripes (ok, she doesn’t actually sing that much, but she still rocks), Vikki and Donna Simpson who front The Waifs (seriously, Vikki plays the harmonica, how cool is that), And Amanda Palmer from the Dresden Dolls as well as Cat Pow and Velvet Underground & Nico too. That’s all I can think of, off the top of my head.
.
sleater-kinney
tegan and sara
the breeders
rilo kiley
yeah yeah yeahs
brandi carlile
the cranberries
veruca salt
tori amos
camera obscura
What about...
Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley (I think someone already said that)? Go on youtube and look for "Portions For Foxes". Great song.
And also, what about The Donnas? Amazingly gorgeous, all of them. Plus, they totally rock. I've heard some songs from their upcoming album, and they're great! Seems like they've taken to more of a 80's rock kinda sound, and it's awesome.
*shudder* You should see them live.
The Donnas Rule
You are so right - the Donnas are such a great band and the new album is going to absolutely rock the house!!!
PS - I am seeing them 4 times on their tour that starts next month! WOO HOO
Lets not forget 80's one hit wonder - Vixen
Yes they only had one song, but they were a female hair band in a sea of men with more make-up. Very good looking too!
As for the rockstar women, I also believe Storm large has some gay cred, dunno that she is gay, Ive been to lazy to try to find out, but they do play pride fests! All the women of Rockstar Supernova were hot, except the one annoying blonde whose name escapes me.
Hot rocker chicks

On a more recent note, I love the lead singer from Texas, her name escapes me!
oh! and Lori you are not alone when it comes to Avril Lavigne. I have no idea why, but she actually does it for me.. It is a running joke around the house, lol. I actually need to take a look at my girl's playlists to counter the joke.... lolol.

My iPod is pretty much ruled by Tori Amos & Kate Bush but others that made it on there include a whole load of Fleetwood Mac & Stevie Nicks solo stuff, Alanis Morissette, Annie Lennox, The Cardigans (they're fronted by a woman), Charlotte Martin, Garbage, Elisa, Tina Turner , The Cranberries, Texas & some more I'm sure
They're not exactly all total rockers per se but I love 'em anyway!
Oh and you can't beat some Bonnie Tyler for a bit of raspy vocals ;)
Aww Lori now we speak the

I absolutely adore your taste in "Hot Rocker Chicks". I love all those artists <3
