Brandi Carlile lends her voice to the environment

Like everyone else on the planet, I spent much of the weekend watching the Olympics. I tuned in late on Friday, and was surprised to see a commercial for General Motors that featured Brandi Carlile singing “The Story.” First of all, as much as I love that song, it doesn’t exactly scream “cars and trucks” to me. But, I was more surprised that Carlile, who I know to be an environmentalist, would agree to the commercial.

After all, Carlile announced last year that she would be donating a portion of every concert ticket sold to help offset all the emissions from her fall tour. In a journal entry on her Web site, she wrote:

The money will help support Reverb's mission as well as NativeEnergy's family farm methane projects, which help reduce global warming pollution by reducing the amount of fossil fuels the farms themselves use for heat, cooling and electricity or by preventing emissions of methane gas from manure stored in lagoons. By helping build new clean and renewable energy projects with NativeEnergy, we''ll reduce CO2 pollution by helping change how power is made.

Clearly the telepathy between Brandi and I is strong, because she posted another journal entry this weekend, explaining that she agreed to the commercial only after GM indicated the song would be used to help promote alternative fuel options and eco-friendly car styles.

First of all, a tip of the hat to Ms. Carlile for maintaining her personal, artistic and social integrity in the face of dollar signs. But, this also got me thinking about how other artists are helping to lessen their carbon footprints. A quick look at the roster of artists involved with Reverb shows that Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, Norah Jones, and Aimee Mann — to name a few — have all partnered with the environmental touring organization to help curb their emissions. Bonnie Raitt has been touring in a bio-fueled bus. Ani DiFranco has even been known to urge members of congress against expanding nuclear power on Native lands.

Let’s face it, the only way for artists to truly curb their emissions and save the environment is to not tour at all, but I don’t think anyone — fans or artists — would be too thrilled with that prospect. Does it matter to you if the artist you’re paying big bucks to see live has taken measures to ensure their tour is polluting as little as possible?

    That's not all!

She and the band are also donating all the monies GM is paying for the song use to a variety of environmental non-profits. :D

This makes my deep love for her feel less superficial. :P

    Fantastic

I actually get upset when I find out my favorite artists/bands aren't encorporating something environmentally-friendly into their tours. I love that musicians are increasingly becoming concerned about the environment and are willing to use their fame to influence the masses to help them help the planet.

Last concert I went to was Warped Tour and I was happy to find them using biodiesel and a solar stage as well as having plenty of volunteers going around recycling bottles. Before that I went to KT Tunstall and she used biodiesel for her tour too. She also works with a company called Global Cool which helps to inspire people to reduce their CO2 emissions.

Oh and I <3 Brandi Carlile.

    Icing on the cake

I am a huge fan of Brandi Carlile. Knowing that she is also an environmentalist who is as true to her convictions as she is authentic in her music is just icing on the cake! Seriously, could Brandi be any more awesome?!

    Yay!

Finally a mention of Brandi Carlile on Afterellen! She's amazing. I think it is important that artists try to reduce their carbon footprint, especially since they're traveling around the world to perform. It makes Brandi even more awesome that she cares and is doing her part. I would cry if she stopped touring though, so that is not the best alternative.

i'm so glad to see some brandi coverage! she is really a fantastic artist that deserves much more attention. i just saw the commerical earlier this evening. it was interesting how they cut the song to almost change the meaning to be about this long-standing, triumphant company doing great things. oh well...i'll take any excuse to hear some brandi on tv!

i also have to echo Jeanne25's words...brandi and kelly in the same post? be still my heart.

    Love Brandi Carlile. I

Love Brandi Carlile. I remember reading that Clarkson was getting into greener touring/lifestyle, and KT Tunstall also uses a bio-diesel fueled bus as well as being pretty involved with environmentally friendly events and organizations.

    Finally!

Finally some coverage of Brandi Carlile on afterellen. I've been a fan of hers since before she released her first album, a remarkable talent who deserve a bigger audience. I was as surprised to learn of the GM ad but I'm glad the tree hugger in her still prevails over the lure of money. GM actually did a good job with the song and the commercial.

I thought that commercial was a joke

Yesterday I saw the GM commercial featuring Brandi Carlile's song, and thought it was youtuber edition from an original commercial, hence a joke. I was surprised that nobody talks about the car, but instead there's just a song...

Missy Higgins is also doing a lot of stuff on enviromental issues. She filmed a series of five "webisodes" about that. Here´s the first...

    Finally?

Interesting to see all the comments that say it's good to see Brandi FINALLY get some recognition on AfterEllen - it was a because of a video link on AfterEllen last year (April? May?) that I first heard her. Wifey saw it and immediately went looking for her music. So a big thanks to ScribeGrrrl - Wifey thinks it was her link.

It has been quiet since then though so yay for more news at last!
