You Can't Take Them Anywhere! Zurich, Switzerland

In our latest European adventure, Bridget and I take a tour of the gorgeous country of Switzerland. Because we were able to pack so much into our trip, we're dividing this installment of YCTTA into multiple episodes.

Our first stop is Zürich. The largest city in Switzerland, Zürich is known for excellent shopping, gastronomical delights, and a rich cultural scene. Before we arrived there, we'd heard that Zürich had been ranked as the city with the highest quality of life anywhere in the world for several years running. As we explored the city, it was easy to see why.

We had a brief but action-packed stay in Zürich, which included lots of shopping (the Freitag building, made of recycled materials, was one of the most interesting shops we visited), dining on delicious foods (the vegetarian restaurant, Hiltl, was our favorite), and exploring every nook and cranny of the beautiful historic city with the assistance of our incredibly well-informed guide (courtesy of Zürich Tourism). In our down time, we enjoyed our very chic accommodations at The Helmhaus Hotel.

We devoted a whole day to a side adventure at Zoo Zürich, where our brilliant and hilarious (but, unfortunately, camera-shy) guide gave us a fascinating tour of the Zoo's exhibit on homosexuality in the animal kingdom. Thanks to her, we learned a lot about the gay habits of a variety of creatures. As the saying goes, we are everywhere!

We hope you'll enjoy the video devoted to our visit to Zürich, and if you have any suggestions for where we should go on future trips back there, let us (and everyone else) know!

You Can't Take Them Anywhere! Zurich, Switzerland

Thanks to Reto Kleeb and Switzerland Tourism for planning and hosting our trip to Switzerland, to Swiss International Airlines for getting us there in style, and to all the AfterEllen.com fans we met there for making it such a great trip!

Little wooden clocks

Zurich has been on my list of cities I still want to visit for a while now.

After watching this, I really want to go. Although I've heard it's really expensive.

Oh I used to have one of those little wooden clocks when I was litte. The exact same one as you showed last.

zurich is expensive, but not

zurich is expensive, but not half as bad as copenhagen. so go before zurich to copenhagen and you will think it's cheap... ;o)

it is rather expensive, but

it is rather expensive, but then it is worth it :)

can we

can we have a You can't take them anywhere: wedding edition?
limors's picture

ooh.

That guide's accent, I REALLY like it.

This was fun! And worth the wait!

And now I'm kinda hungry. Which is funny cause I'm not a big chocolat fan.

Come to Israel! We have bomb shelters in almost every house, I think! Ours is a big clothes closet so in case of war we can all play dress-up. Fun fun fun!

zurich is a great city... i was there only a few weeks ago. unfortunatly is was out on business, so couldn't see my relatives there and nothing of the really nice city. it was fun, to look where you to have been in zurich, and some good hints where to go at the next time when i'm there. (the zoo, yeah!)

marilyne's picture

Yeay!

Grüezi to you too guys! It's nice to get to see the footage of the gay zoo you talked about at the meet up!

Chocolate and bakery are fantastic in switzerland, this thing got me hungry! I'm looking forward for the next episod, and see how you survived your adventure.

Everything with passion, nothing with talent...

Thunderbolt!

It's been nearly two and a half months since you took this trip ladies, I'm glad to finally see all the shenanigans you got yourselves into. Chocolate for Bridget, what a surprise. The buildings were beautiful, I think I'm going to have to add Zurich to my list of places to see.

The zoo looked fantastic, and your tour guide was awesome. She really knew a lot about homosexual animal behavior, very nice. :)

Can't wait for the next part.

Speeking of Thunderbolt,

I didn't recognize her at first so I was all "what the HELL did Bridget do to her hair?!" :D

Exciting!

Ok weill I'm off to watch now, love you guys, love Zurich, so this is bound to be awesome. I've been waiting ages for this!

Kudos

Ahhh.. Switzerland.. ein herzliches Grüezi :D

I see you enjoyed munching on the piece of Engadiner Nusstörtli (nut cake from the region of Engadin)! A rather "nurishing" Swiss delicacy :D

Zurich is not only the economic and cultural capital of Switzerland, but also in the top ten of the world's most expensive cities o_O! Did Sarah give you a shopping budget ;D? The famous Bahnhofstrasse is one of the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping avenues after all!

Oh and what a gay day you had in the zoo o_O!

As for new ventures...since you like the architecture and cosyness of the Zurich Altstadt (historic old town) why not explore more of continetal Europe... Munich would be a great place, especially in the winter with a massive Xmas market all across the city! Of course you could also pop over to the UK..London and Manchester have a lot to offer, including a big gay scene!

One teeny tiny little thing: the link to the Freitag Building needs a spelling correction, swap ie for ei in the term Freitag ;)

Can't wait for part 2 from Lucerne.. hope you crossed the lake via the famous Kapellbrücke!

it never ceases to amaze me how different we westerners are. I am totally loving your vlog on SF etc and you are totally into the beautiful "swiss" architecture. I can't find anything appealing about it having lived in germany for 28 years. it's just all same old. but I'm sure SF and LA etc is all same old to you. that's funny to me. you talking about the beautiful zurich scenery.

I love that you always eat chocolates in every single vlog. no matter where you go. it's the first thing you scoop out. it's your thing. love it :D

the zoo was great. very interesting piece.

it's always so much fun seeing you two having so much fun. keep it up! ;)

fun to watch

That was really fun to watch, even or because of knowing Zurich that well I was constantly trying to guess where you were.

But come on, with your faszinition for chocolate I can't believe that you didn't make it to the factory shop of Lindt&Sprüngli? ;-) Be sure not to miss that one, if you really come back for Europride.
And if you do so, you should go and visit Colmar (France, Alsace) which is called the "little Venice of France). Colmar is famous for it's christmas market but also for the beautiful scenery from spring till automn.

Awesome vlog!

This was fantastic - now I really want to go to Switzerland, if only to see all their gay animals. And if you're interested in visiting some more 'most livable cities', Melbourne is right up there. It's summer here, so Bridget won't need her coat!

I have no idea how you can afford all these vacations, but I definitely look forward to seeing more of your adventures soon. :)

uf Wiederluege & bis zum nächschte Mal z'Züri!

Yay - it is up! ;-)

Was great seeing you guys at the Meet-Up - and it is nice to see my hometown brought into the world by such great ambassadors! ;-P

Happy to hear you loved Züri :-)))

Maybe I have more time next near when you come again...? Hope so... !

P.S.: for chocolates/pralinés - the best Truffes aux Champagne are to be bought at Teuscher, Truffes du Jour at Sprüngli though :-). Honold for salty Croissants au Jambon (ham), Chäschüechli (salty cheese tarts, quiche) and their cake!

... singin' 'rudolph, the red nosed reindeer'!

grüezi

I was there in October and thought it was rather warm - I reckon it depends where you come from *g* Unfortunately I didn't have much time to do stuff, but I did the tour over the lake and some shopping and I loved the church with the Chagall glasse.

I was not happy with Swiss Air since they but that is not Zürich's fault. Maybe I come back next May.

Wunderschon!!

It was great to finally see your trip to Zurich. It brought back so many memories.  I had the great privilege of staying for several months in Winterthur (which is a short train ride from Zurich)when I was younger.  I took a'German for foreign speaking people' course there.  As part of the course, they took us all over the country.  I also visited many other parts with my hosts who were cousins of my best friend from High School.

One thing I loved there was going to their supermarket which used to be called the Migros Market.  They had all sorts of things (mustard, ketchup and mayo) in tubes like toothpaste.  I did get a kick out of it.

If you return to Switzerland, why not hit the mountains and go to Zermatt.  There is possibly the most marvelous train ride I've ever been on that goes up there from Brig-Zermatt (the BVZ line).  Many great activites there, with hiking, wintersports, nice little bistros.  I hope you did get to taste Raclette when you were there.  It's even better than Fondue and much more typically Swiss.

Since Bridget is part Sicilian, why not have an Italian trip and visit some of the neat places there.   Of course the typical cities are fun but head down South and go to Naples are and Pompeii.  It's great!!!

Ahhh, now you are giving me the wanderlust again!

Oh Bridget & Karman I heart U Too

Switzerland looks beautiful. Is the air clean? How does Switzerland smell? I wish the Swiss would give us advice on how tokeep the landscape clean. I got to add Zurich to my must-see cities list . Watching you two being yourselves while traveling the world cracks me up. Thanks for inserting the info about Gay Animals. Can't wait for part two.

Yay for sex-positive Orangutans

1. you 2 are uber-adorable

2. i remember really wanting to live in switzerland when i was a kid because i would read about violent murders in the newspaper and get scared and i'd heard somewhere that there was no violence in switzerland

3. it looks very beautiful there. i should go someday

4. orangutans make dildos?! that's it, they are official the smartest animals!

5. your guide was awesome. i love how she tried to insert little corrections into you guys' inaccurate (but creative and quite hilarious) reporting of the animals' behaviors, lol

It's weird to see you in "my" city

It's really strange. But I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip to Züri, and  I'm a bit sad that I didn't run into you...

I did the zoo tour as well this summer (but with a different guide) and was surprised by how many animals are gay, so I guess homosexuality is really "natural". All those times I went to this zoo (I literally spent my childhood there), and I had no clue.

Fun travels

Switzerland is one of the many places I would love to visit (really need to get that passport application completed!).  Zurich looks like just the type of place I would love with the pre-war buildings and cozy designs.

The zoo shots were so much fun.  The little baby gorilla was too cute!  How come we didn't get to see a shot of the snow leopards?

My favourite part of the vlog......when Karman told Bridgette to "just be pretty".  :-P  Looking forward to Part 2.

Best Zoo ever!

I so want to go to Zurich to check out that Zoo! Love it! Why don't they talk about gay animals when we go to the Zoo at primary school?!

It was a great episode again, thanks :) So much fun watching it!

YCTTA! ça déchire wouahhhhhhh

I like "You Can't Take Them Anywhere!" so much because it's funny, entertaining and very interesting.

In the -28:20 min when I saw written on the shop window "le parapluie" behind Karman it made me thought of Dara because she said that it was its favorite word in French lol

The AfterEllen Meet-Up was awesome and unforgettable. I met a very adorable girls.

Thank you so much Bridget and Karman.
