"The X-Files" sequel: Invading theatres this summer

It's been ten long years since the last X-Files film, based on the hit FOX television series of the same name, came out. In that time, star Gillian Anderson got married, got divorced, had a baby and went back to being a blonde--though not necessarily in that order. (And yes, she also received a slew of award nominations for her acting on stage and screen.) David Duchovny had a couple of kids with his real-life wife, Tea Leoni, donated his movie wife's heart to Minnie Driver in Return to Me (2000) and played a hand model in Zoolander.

Yeah, they really do need to go back to their government jobs.

Below are a few sterile and redundant stills from the film:

Last summer, Dorothy Snarker gave us the preliminary scoop on the movie, and yesterday the filmmakers themselves dropped some maddeningly vague hints about the sequel.

While attending the 25th annual William S. Paley Television Festival along with co-writer Frank Spotnitz, director (and series creator) Chris Carter told reporters, "I know what I want it to be, but Fox has ideas of their own...I know what it should be." While the original film centered on the "alien mythology" storyline that came to dominate the series in later years, the sequel will reportedly be a standalone feature, like the "monster of the week" episodes that originally defined the television show. Spotnitz added, "It will not be a mythology movie, but it's true to everything that's come before."

The film, which also stars Amanda Peet and Billy Connolly, is set to hit theatres July 25.

If, like me, you can't wait that long for a Gillian Anderson fix, check out the video below. Back in 1997, Anderson "sang" and appeared in the video for a techno track, "Extremis" by the band Hal. Some of us even bought the cd single and the accompanying VHS video the day it came out. Thinking about the sequel brought back some fond memories of this Skinemax-y, robot-laden masterpiece. Enjoy!

It's a shame they didn't hire the costume designer from "Extremis" for The X-Files sequel, isn't it? And whoever came up with this shot from "Extremis":

should have at least been consider for a job on the feature, right?

    No kidding.

    Ooooh she is a dream.

Thanks for that video, karman, I'd never seen it before! Super hot.

And I can't believe the movie's coming out so soon, I've hear basically no press about it. I hope it picks up soon! SO excited.

I'm fairly excited about this movie actually.. I think it's time to start rewatching some old episodes to get in the zone for it ;]

    the truth is out there

what got me interested first is the show itself (what can i say, i am a sci-fi junkie)... and then i began to heart Mulder and Scully.

When i heard about this movie, i literally jumped for joy! I was ecstatic! I am going to see them again. Oh yeah!

and Karman, thanks for the vid. This is the first time i've seen it =)

    I'm uber excited

Ok this information calls for a X-Files marathon. I have all nine seasons on dvd. Get a bigscreen tv, popcorn, soda, and I'll be there with my stuff.

    Who is with me??

I don't want to doubt you
    Know everything about you
    I don't want to sit
    Across the table from you
    Wishing I could run.....

    BobGirl's picture

    Just marathon'd it all...

About two months ago I decided it would be a great idea to watch them all again...

201 episodes + the film and 31 days later... I so wish there had been more Scully/Reyes action. *sigh*

I still think a lot of the stand-alone episodes were the best, the mythology got tiresome until they started explaining things in s6 and s7.

    baarlijan_xen's picture

    I'M WITH YOU!!!

hahahaaaa... in fact I'm ALWAYS on an X-files marathon.... I watch a couple of episodes every night (or a whole DVD if I can't sleep), and when I've seen them all I start all over again

I even rewatch the extras DVD!!!

    mwahahahaaaaa.... I'm obsessed with it.

but I'm a pain in the ass... I'm one of those freaks that'll stop and rewind constantly at every little thing so nobody wants to watch it with me!!! ahahaaaahaha!!!! XD

drool. thanks for the tip karman

    i'm in! x filezarathon yay

I have to say though, the song is impresively lame, the vid makes as much sense as the xfiles. but hey, anything that stars gillian anderson in suggestive poses and tank tops and silk sheets is just fine by me.
Could they make the X files prequel without Dumb DUchovny? just give us Scully!

    deathbyblonde's picture

    Oh my

I think I have to watch that video a few dozen more times. Gillian Anderson, why can't you be my girlfriend?!!!!

    GA

Yeah, everybody, men and women, watched the show for Gillian Anderson. I remember an old TV Guide interview with both DD and GA and the interviewer mentioned that DD had like five fan sites dedicated to him, and DD got all full of himself over that. But it was a bait and switch tactic on the part of the interviewer because then they said that there were over 60 sites dedicated to GA. Of course GA didn't really care because we all know that she's a ludite and the online community and fan base are what they are and largely unrelatable to her. I can't say that I find that endearing, but at least it's honest, and probably helps a celebrity stay grounded. Well, that and not living in Hollywood, or even the US.
Still, GA is one of my biggest celebrity crushes. I will, of course, see this movie because like picking a scab, I can't help myself.

i also have all 9 seasons on DVD and love them!

i even have a cat named scully... :-)

    geeness's picture

    yessssssss?

i'm so looking forward to this movie!

i LOVE the x-files! i've got all 9 seasons on dvd, and a few other dvd's and videos to boot, and the video games!! i also have a couple of posters somewhere (no longer on the wall), books, trading cards AND the extremis single. i actually quite like it! oh and the theme, i've got that on my ipod too! guess i'm an x-phile, hehe

i'm kinda into the sci-fi thing, more the x-files than star trek though, and that's what got me into the show, although i never saw it from the start. the first one i saw was with all the Eve's, think i was 15/16.

i did have a crush on david duchovny, although i still do! i loved californication!! so different to mulder, but so good.

i also think the whole mulder and scully thing was the longest ever will they won't they, and when they finally kissed it was like, omg about time!

i wonder if william will be in the film?! that would be good.

so yeah, that x-files marathon, i've got the popcorn... =D

    baarlijan_xen's picture

    meh...

I've even got the Ken and Barbie X- Files Fight the Future dolls!!!

I never had a Barbie doll in my whole life but suddenly I came across this and begged my mom for it (I was 15) ... for a second there she thought I was on my way to redemption, but then I said something about wanting to be Mulder solely to kiss Scully and her dreams were bitterly shattered....

    poor mama .... mwahahahaaaa.... XD

I had them! I loved them.. They're somewhere, but not still in the box sadly. Ha-ha... I think I even lost Scully's badge on her shirt, because she was so used. I played with them religiously, but oddly I like Scully to kiss other girls. Hmm, go figure. LOL -Rachel

    Me too!

Am I the only one who got them when she was over the age of 30? :) My friends know me well and they were the perfect gift!

Is the truth still out there?

I used to love the X-files...and Scully *happy sigh*. Still, I can't really say I am looking forward to this movie.

It's been too long since the series ended. Who really cares about this film?

    fallonash's picture

    Wow...

Gillian Anderson has never been far from my thoughts in the years since XF ended, but I had sort of forgotten Extremis. Or I thought so. I hit play on the video, and realized to my surprise that I still know every word to it. The number of times I must have listened to it... oy.

    Can't wait for July 25th!!

    Sonicwave's picture

    Mulder & Scully!!!

I was a total X-Files freak, so obsessed with that show, though not so much now, maybe the movie will change all that. I loved the show up until the 6th or 7th season. By the 8th & 9th season, the show kind of ran its course, but I have every season on DVD. I prefer the earlier seasons, just because they had better episodes and storylines.

As for Gillian Anderson...I found myself into redheads because of her! It was nice to see such a kick ass role for a woman on TV. She was so cool!!!

When the first movie (Fight the Future) came out in 1998, I was there...now 10 years later and I'll be there again. Looking forward to the soundtrack of the new movie. I have the TV soundtracks as well as the first movie soundtrack.

Speaking of music...I remember there was a song by Catatonia called "Mulder and Scully". Does anyone remember that song?

I will defintely see the X-Files movie on July 25th...I saw a trailer of the movie online and it looks pretty good. The truth is always "out" there.

    wonderfully_crazy's picture

    I want to believe

I remember that song, it was awesome, was the one that got me into Catatonia, i'm gutted they never had it in the show.

Can't believe its finally coming back, so excited. First saw the series when i was about 13/14 and have loved it ever since. Hope that it isnt a complete standalone movie but hey if it is, i'm sure it will still be fantastic because Mulder and Scully are back wooooooo.

Sooo excited about this. And while Scully was a biggie, I loved the concept and the UST (before everything became rather obvious between Mulder and Scully), and pretty much everything before Mulder left. Though I still watched it. And did I say I am excited????

So glad I'm not the only one whos got excited about this! My friend who I've not heard from in years, sent me a text message the other day and told me about the film, seeing as we went to see the first one when it came out in the cinema we've already set a date for the new movie. Who knew there were still so many of us fans out there that have been laying dormant for all these years ha! Scully on big screen woop! Ok, I'm getting way to excited now I'm off for a cold shower.

Wooooo. I cannot wait. The X Files is one of my favorite tv series of all time. I'm probably in the theater to see this on the first day it is out and I haven't been to the theater in years, and I never have attended a movie on the first day.

    X Files

Scully hasn't aged a bit but it's been 10 long years for Mulder.

I only got into this series recently, my girlfriend and I bought the complete boxset along with the first film. We've been watching it religiously ever since and are at the beginning of Season 5 at the moment. I don't know why I didn't watch it the first time round, I think I appreciate it now more than I would have then. Mulder and Scully have great chemistry.

    Can't wait for the film!

    yyyyesssss!!!!!

yyyyyyyyyyyyessssssssssss. i cannot express my excitement through words! well, one word: .......yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyesssssssssssssss.

i am so excited! i've been a huge x-files fan since i was 12 and had big crushes on both david duchovny and gillian anderson! i started watching the show for other reasons, not only celeb attraction, but that changed pretty fast.

geeness -- i'm also wondering if their baby will be a part of the film..!!! are mulder and scully married now, or what!?

and to whomever said gillian hasn't aged a day but it's been a long 10 years for david - hah! you're right -- though i still harbour crushes on both of them. (has anyone seen "The TV set"? It's a great movie, featuring D.D.)

i can't wait for the new xfiles movie!!!!!! i'll be there... with bells on.

    Scully crush...

Who didn't have a crush on Scully back in the days?

X files sort of defined my closeted early youth experience in many ways...
I didn't fit in with my straight classmates, but I fit in with the X files obsessed geeks - it was our weekly sci fi fix, something to have in common. I was confused and unsure of my sexuality, but my increasing crush on Scully eradicated more and more of that doubt - and the fact that she always posed next to Mulder on the posters made it perfectly legitimate to cover my teenage room walls with her, he provided a perfect alibi allowing me to stare as much as I liked a little to the left of him...

Fortunately it's been years since those confusing closeted days. I was reminded of it all when I recently bought the entire X files series - nostalgia, I guess - and saw it again with fresh, lesbian eyes... and I thought: Seriously, is it just me or wasn't Scully always SO GAY!?!
I mean, clearly that is the real reason why she and Mulder never hook up, at least not for many seasons (I consider their actual hook-up a wrong turn of events). It seems all the sexual tension comes from Mulder, and the way Scully holds herself, speaks, dresses, my gaydar goes off with a sirene... Too bad the show's creators never dared to lead her further along the lesbian path.

But hey, at least there's planty of Scully femslash fanfiction out there :-D

    Gillian Anderson

I'm surprised there was no mention of GA's post X-FILES work, such as her role in the BBC's BLEAK HOUSE adaptation a few years back, for which she got rave reviews.

What's a bit disconcerting when you see her interviewed on UK TV is that she's now reacquired the British accent she had as a teenager (she spent much of her childhood over here). I assume this wasn't a conscious thing, but at this point I suppose doing an American accent for the movie will be.

Well, it's about damn time. It better be really, really good. I missed it so. I'm a  huge Chris Carter Fan. We need to see moresci-fi movies. Yeah for Summer! Gillian (Cool name) A was in a music video. She's a very sexy voice.  Thanks for the X-file scoops!

    Scully fanfic

Speaking of fanfic, I cannot recommend strongly enough Radclyffe's "Genesis" series. To me, the show didn't really make sense without the character of Marsh Black, whom Radclyffe invented as the perfect partner in all ways for Scully. (It's still online here: http://radfic.com/FanFic.html.) Sigh. I'm not sure what I miss more, that series (which sometimes seemed to know our dear Scully better than Chris Carter did) or the t.v. series.

    Her accent

I agree with Scorpio54, i am almost fell off my chair when i heard her accent on parkinson!

     It's pretty hot though ;-)

I know lots of people who swap between accents, not consciously, but just when around people of that accent. Like the dude who plays Captain Jack on Torchwood.

those are some uneventful photos and i still found myself shouting "THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME!"

We had an amp in high school and me and this other girl named it 'Scully'..we had everyone in class calling te amplifier Scully.
