PETA honors sexiest vegetarians

After tallying 110,000 votes cast on on its website, animal rights organization PETA today announced their annual picks for the world's sexiest vegetarians. American Idol-winner and country star Carrie Underwood claimed the female title this year (as she did in 2005):

and Tonight Show band leader Kevin Eubanks won for sexiest male vegetarian.

Runners up this year were Joaquin Phoenix, Milo Ventimiglia, Jared Leto, and

Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell (pictured below with a dog that she did not later consume)

Bryce Dallas Howard (Spiderman 3, The Lady in the Water)

and Lisa Edelstein (House, M.D.)

Winners in years past include Natalie Portman (V for Vendetta, Garden State)

Alicia Silverstone (Clueless)

and country singer Shania Twain.

Yes, this was just the excuse we needed to run pics of Portman, Silverstone and Twain.

Is it a coincidence that several of these sexy vegetarians also made the AfterEllen.com Hot 100 List? I doubt it. Lesbians have always known that activism is sexy.

....

It's great to see that Peta are using clever marketing techniques to increase their coverage. Recently, in Australia, one man protested KFC, with the support of Peta, to expose just exactly how they treat their chickens. I'm not a vegetarian, but I know that after that article and some of the images, I've gone off chicken for quite some time!

And you bleed just to know you're alive.

GrrrlRomeo's picture

Why Not Free Range?

You don't have to stop eating chicken altogether if it's just that you don't like the way KFC does business. Just don't eat at KFC.

Buy free range, grain fed chicken from companies that do business responsibly. They usually put it right on their labels to encourage consumers to buy it even though it's a little more expensive. It costs more for them to take the extra care of the chickens, but they can't do it if no one buys it.

If enough people start buying responsibly it'll change the market so that it's not just about competitive pricing, but competitive quality and responsibility.

No mention...

...of Jorja Fox? I'm surprised. She's been a very outspoken supporter of PETA, has done ad campaigns for vegetarianism, and even her character on CSI, Sarah Sidle, is a vegetarian. Gotta give some props to Ms. Fox. Oh, and hello, the hotness!
madandlovely's picture

Totally agree

when i read the title, the first person i thought of was jorja fox. its strange she wasnt mentioned. AND she'sin our hot 100! and for a good reason.

butcher

It took me a minute to realize the "butcher" sign behind her was a sign for an actual butcher and not, you know, some reference to being more butch.  I'm going to blame this on my terrible nights' sleep and not on my warped mind.

Re: Butcher

LMFAO.

I work in advertising (yes, yes, boo, hiss, I know) and when I saw the Jorja Fox ad, I was thinking about how much (despite my love for Jorja) this ad sucks.

But that's besides the point -- the comment about it being something to do with being more butch had me laughing so hard I peed a little. <single perfect tear>

AWESOME!

Also, I'm a PETA fan, supporter, fellow-vegetarian, etc., but it doesn't mean that I have to like the ads, so please don't hate me. They're just not effective.

I miss Veronica Mars. Been marathon-ing it for the past few days. That is an excellent picture of Kristen Bell. Also, is it wrong to be seriously attracted to Lisa Edelstein even though she's old enough to have given birth to me?

~It means pride.~

Carrie Underwood? Really?

I voted for Natalie Portman and Milo Ventimiglia.  At least one of my picks was a runner up.

Natalie Should have Won

She's the sexiest vegetarian in my book...I would give up meat for her any day. ha!

Kudos to Veggies

I wish I had the willpower to be a vegetarian.  I admire the effort and conscientiousness of those that practice it.  Alas, I am weak for cheeseburgers.  But, I am trying to make more of my meals veggie focused.

Also, has anyone made the 'vagitarian' joke here yet? If not, please allow me.  I know it's a bit course but I can't help myself.

Sexy people = Good, PETA = Bad.

Sexy people. Yay.
I especially love Lisa Edelstein. I mostly watch House for her.

I have to say, though activism can be sexy, terrorism is not sexy. If you're going to support an animal rights organisation, support one that is not run by psychotic terrorists.

you got it backwards, dearie

PETA are being vilified by those who posses power, control the biased media and have vested interests in the mass-slaghter industry, such as Imperialistic McDonalds or KFC. If anyone is deserving to be called "terrorists", it's those corporations, who terrorize not only animals before they are butchered, but millions of employees who are treated as slaves.
monkeywrench's picture

Pfft.

oh please, PETA has been linked to terrorist attacks! They gave a gift of thousands of dollars to an arsonist because he's an animal liberation activist!

They don't promote violence publicly but they don't denounce it either. I've never seen them fully denounce violent tactics.

And they'd rather have people die of AIDS instead of finding a cure just because animals are tested.

If they had their way, no one would even be allowed to have pets.

Not to mention their disgusting campaign of comparing the Holocaust to chickens!

I'd rather support a sane Animal Rights organisation that criticises PETA than be in any way connected with these weirdos.

PETA = law abiding organisation

PETA has never engaged in any terrorist activities whatsoever! I think it's just a warped perception in our day and age that being willing to use your legitimate right to protest about animal rights issues is a) extreme b) uncool
ie PETA may seem extreme to you and you may equate that with terrorism but actually they have never done anything other than use attention-grabbing media stunts to draw attention to what they feel is overlooked, which in our jaded age of sensory-overload, is the only way to get coverage. Re going veggie, when you find out what is going on with industrial farming, the transition is quite an easy one. There are also loads of veggie alternatives to meat, some of which you can't tell apart from meat.

please try and see the truth here, there is a huge injustice going on in industrial farming of animals. apart from that it has a major direct impact on the land, water, local populations etc. If you think you can stand it, try and watch the film 'Earthlings' which is available for free viewing on the net.

Apart from that..Lisa Edelstein is absolutely stunning (no pun intended)

monkeywrench's picture

Heh

PETA has been linked to terrorism. Everybody knows that (or should, anyway).

PETA has been connected to ALF (Animal Liberation Front). They've supported them and donated money to them. The ALF and the ELF (Earth Liberation Front), the FBI has testified, have claimed credit for more than 1,200 criminal incidents from 1990-2004.

sas78's picture

By that reasoning, anyone

By that reasoning, anyone who has ever donated to the ALF or the ELF is a terrorist..

I've lifted this from the website of the American Civil Liberties Union, date of 12/2/2004 :

"The FBI is collecting information about nonviolent protesters and law abiding organizations whose issues are as varied as animal rights, protection of the environment, labor rights, United States military policies, social and economic justice in Latin America, and the treatment of Native Americans," said ACLU of Colorado Legal Director Mark Silverstein. "Their advocacy and expressive activities have nothing to do with terrorism."

monkeywrench's picture

What

What's that got to do with PETA and their support of terrorist tactics? Nothing.

sas78's picture

Giving money to an

Giving money to an organisation which has engaged in "criminal incidents" (not terrorism) does not at any stretch of the imagination make the donor organisation terrorist. The ACLU quote is also to show how some governments, post - 9/11, are clamping down on free speech, including a move to redefining terrorism to include non-violent actions. Neither ALF, ELF or PETA has ever been convicted of killing or maiming anyone so to put them in the same category as eg Al Qaida is fundamentally wrong. PETA doesn't need to publicly denounce violence because it's so obvious it doesn't need to be stated. PETA doesn't want to get rid of pet ownership but to reduce pet population through spaying and neutering and people getting their pets from shelters. There are literally mountains and mountains of pets put down every year, many of them not euthanised but gassed (a slower, extremely distressing death) which is cheaper. Animal testing involves prolonged torture of animals resulting in "scientific" results of questionable value when alternatives such as computer modelling exist. Until a cure can be found, AIDS survival rates depend largely on access to proper medical care, healthy diet and a supportive environment. PETA has never compared the Holocaust to chickens, obviously the Holocaust is the most awful thing to have happened in the history of humanity. The comparisons were in terms of mentalities ie lack of respect for life. Just as the Nazis saw their prisoners as 'stueck' ie things, so intensive farming fosters a way of seeing animals as things when they are in fact living, reasoning creatures capable of feeling pain and fear. On a sidetrack, the philosopher Hannah Arendt known for her work on the Nuremburg trials and totalitarianism, said that the conditions that led to the Shoah (I believe the preferred term is Shoah as Holocaust actually means holy offering) still continue today due in part to lack of a true public sphere.
Becky C.'s picture

And Next

And next on the PETA agenda is the the "Running of the Nudes" at Pamplona in July. There are always tons of healthy veggie girls crowned with pairs of (artificial of course) bull horns. Someday I hope to be one of them. I think Hemingway would have been a better man if this event had occured during his lifetime.
GrrrlRomeo's picture

People for the Ethical Distribution of Information?

I don't like the way PETA uses shame, fear and grotesque images to manipulate people. There's nothing wrong with omnivores eating meat. What's wrong is the way companies treat the animals they slaughter. But there are alternatives that don't involve becoming a strict vegetarian. People should be aware of ALL the options including humane farms.

I always feel like PETA is trying to convince me that I'm a horrible monster. It's extremism. "You either go vegetarian or you're a murder." To me, being ethical means providing all the information to allow someone to develop a reasonable solution that works for them.
