NBC wants more "Kath & Kim"

NBC has just ordered a full season (nine more episodes) of the new comedy Kath & Kim, starring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair.

As we told you when the show first premiered, Kath & Kim is a remake of a popular Australian sitcom of the same name, and the creators of the original Australian production (Gina Riley and Jane Turner) are producers of the U.S. version.

Despite more than a few negative reviews (The San Francisco Chronicle called it "a contender for worst remake ever"), the show has benefited from an excellent time slot, following the NBC hit My Name is Earl and leading into popular shows The Office and 30 Rock.

As a loyal Molly Shannon fan, I am happy to see her continue her well-deserved turn on primetime television. It's been depressing to see her immense talent relegated to tiny roles in movies like Talladega Nights or one-off television appearances (Pushing Daisies, 30 Rock). I will watch her in just about anything, which is exactly why I try to watch Kath and Kim.

I try.

Unlike the naysayers who object to the U.S. remake being a sad shadow of the Australian Kath & Kim's former glory, I came to the show without any of those expectations. I'd never seen the original, and even if I had, I'd be open to the possibility that the remake could be just as good or better. (I can't sit through a whole episode of the original British version of The Office, but the U.S. incarnation is one of my all-time favorite programs.)

Still, I can't bring myself to enjoy Kath and Kim. Molly Shannon is, as always, great. Her character is funny, endearing and unintentionally kooky. John Michael Higgins (Best in Show), who plays her love interest, very nearly steals the show out from under her. I root for his character and his little sandwich shop, and he and Shannon make a perfectly goofy couple.

As for the rest of the show, I just don't get it. Selma Blair, as Kath's self-absorbed and immature daughter, seems to be playing dumb instead of living it. And all of the press about how much weight she gained for the role (20 pounds) is somewhat distracting. I watch her character's "constant" eating and think, "She still looks skinny to me!" While Shannon and Higgins make magic together in all of their scenes, Shannon and Blair's interactions feel like an off-key duet.

Maybe it's just me, and maybe I'll grow to love the show now that there will be additional episodes to (hopefully) enjoy. But the fact that Australian television canceled the U.S. Kath & Kim after only two episodes doesn't bode well for its future here.

And even if Kath & Kim doesn't get a second season, let's hope that Shannon keeps her primetime comeback momentum. Television without Molly Shannon is a sad and boring thing indeed. Don't get me started, don't even get me started!

I Agree

Admittedly, I only saw part of an episode, but that was enough. It seemed they were trying too hard to be funny and their attempts at comedy fell flat. In my opinion, it just seemed too contrived.

The only reason I watched "Kath & Kim" at all was because I noticed Molly Shannon was in it, but the program didn't capture my interest beyond the first commercial break.

Edit: I just read through the other thread, "How did 'Kath & Kim' do for you?", and discovered that others shared this view as well. (I truly wanted to like it!)

Meh.

I like Kath & Kim. I think it's funny and dorky and Kath is like a combination of me and my friends. I don't think a show has to be brilliant to enjoy it, can't it just be dorky and stupid and funny and entertaining?

I'm an Aussie that loves the

I'm an Aussie that loves the original but I was more than willing to watch the US version and try to get into it. At the moment it sucks hard balls but i do think it has moments in it that are good, well, okay anyway. I think they just need to embrace the physicality and crass humour of the original a little more.

I think its ok actually

I havent seen any full episodes (living overseas) so have only seen a few clips on youtube, but I think its ok actually. Its a different kind of humour - I cant think of any mainstream US comedies that have a similar type of humour. They are dumb but harmless people that you laugh at, not with. A big chunk of the humour is the Malapropisms - spoken by ignoranuses. ;)

I think their failing is that the actors are too attractive - the "I'm so sexy" attititude of those that clearly arent is part of the charm. And Kel's counterpart - heck how do you follow Kel? And is there going to be a Sharon? But on the whole its going ok - stick with it.

Americans: adjust your humour-dar. Its not obvious humour like most of your current sitcoms, its subtle. In that way its true to the original.

Reminded me of Ab Fab

I watched most of an episode last week and thought it was mildly amusing. I really liked Molly Shannon's performance. Its debauchery reminded me a lot of Absolutely Fabulous. Incidentally, I just read that Fox has bought the rights to that program and will make a U.S. version. -- Several years back, when Ab Fab was really hot, Roseanne Barr tried to make a U.S. version. But, it didn't work then. Hopefully, it will now.

Blah

I saw the pilot episode and that was enough for me.  I too love Molly Shannon, she steals every scene in just about everything I've seen her in, but this isn't a very good show in my opinion.  It doesn't help that Selma Blair drives me insane, she really cannot act, and their chemistry is way off.  My girlfriend and I just sat there and felt like we wasted 30 minutes of our lives.

I bloody love Molly

I bloody love Molly Shannon, but I think my friend put it best: ever since she lost weight, she hasn't been as funny.

I think she should quit trying to "broaden" her range and just stick to being hella funny, coz she's really good at it!

damnit! plus she looked great when she was cheeky... anywho, I guess it's good to have her around still.
