Lucy Lawless to star in "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" on Starz

Yesterday, when I read the headline "Lucy Lawless to star in Spartacus" on Variety.com, I just about did a spit-take with my morning coffee. I figured it was probably too good to be true, probably just an April Fool's Day joke (as they seem to be all the rage these days in the online world). Then I took the time to actually read the too-brief article itself.

Yes, Lucy Lawless will star in Spartacus: Blood and Sand, but not as Spartacus. Rather, she'll play a "proprietor of a camp for gladiators." Which is fine, as any Lawless casting news is good news as far as I'm concerned. In more good news, the "new fantasy-and-fighting series" will be helmed by Rob Tapert (Lawless's real-life husband) and Sam Raimi, the guys who brought us the series that made Lawless famous, Xena: Warrior Princess.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand will begin production in April, and will air on Starz in January 2010.

Lucy Lawless

So I guess that it's okay that Lawless will not be playing Spartacus on Starz. But, in the words of Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey) in Dazed and Confused, it'd be a lot cooler if she did.

Naturally, this news made me wonder what an all-female version of Spartacus would look like, and who should star (besides Lawless, of course).

For those of you who don't know the story (or never saw the 1960 Stanley Kubrick epic of the same name), below is a brief description of the plot and a rundown (thanks, Wikipedia!) of the main characters:

Spartacus is about a slave who leads a ferocious revolt against the Roman empire, and this new version should, of course, be written and directed by Sofia Coppola.

Here's the new and improved cast as I see it:

Lucy Lawless as Spartacus. Spartacus is a Thracian slave working in Libya, who is purchased by the lanista Lentulus Batiatus, and trained as a gladiator. She later leads the revolt at the gladiatorial school, which spreads throughout the countryside.

Holland Taylor (The L Word) as Crassus, the wealthiest woman in Rome. Crassus has an obsessive love of the city of Rome and its old tradition of patrician rule. She vies for power in the Roman Senate and thinks little of Spartacus's rebellion.

Holland Taylor

Renee O'Connor (Xena: Warrior Princess) as Varinia. Varinia is a slave girl from Britainnia working for Batiatus, who falls in love with Spartacus and eventually becomes her loving wife, and gives birth to a son.

Renee O'Connor

Dame Judi Dench (Quantum of Solace) as Gracchus. Gracchus is a dedicated Roman senator who is Crassus's only real opposition. She is a Republican and a crooked pragmatist whoselack of scruples in her political dealings is her ultimate downfall. However, he was willing to help Batiatus seek revenge on Crassus.

Dame Judi Dench

Sigourney Weaver (Aliens) as Batiatus. Lentulus Batiatus is a shrewd, manipulative slave dealer, who purchases Spartacus, and ends up paying dearly for it. She blames Crassus for Spartacus's rebellion and for his poverty; therefore, he seeks revenge against Crassus and eventually settles that account with a little help from the Roman senator Gracchus.

Sigourney Weaver

Rachel Maddow (The Rachel Maddow Show) as Julius Caesar. Caesar is the young, ambitious, protege of Gracchus, who gains command of the Garrison of Rome during the chaos of the Spartacus rebellion. Her support of Gracchus wanes as the rebellion becomes more serious and Caesar grows disgusted with Gracchus's perfidious attitude towards Spartacus, ultimately defecting to Crassus.

Rachel Maddow

Mia Kirshner (The L Word) as Helena Glabrus. Helena is the shrewd, manipulative sister of Marcus Publius Glabrus, who insists that Batiatus entertain them with two pairs of gladiators fighting to the death.

Mia Kirshner

Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica) as Crixus. Crixus is one of Spartacus' most loyal lieutenants, and serves her until she is slain in the final battle.

Grace Park

Drea de Matteo (The Sopranos) as Tigranes Levantus. Levantus is a Sicilian pirate who agrees to take the slaves out of Italy. When Spartacus and her forces reach Brundisium, Levantus is forced to betray them, and takes no pride in it.

Drea de Matteo

Kristen Stewart (Twilight) as Marcus Publius Glabrus. Glabrus is the naïve protege of Crassus, who unwittingly plays into the hands of Gracchus.

Kristen Stewart

Michelle Rodriguez (The Fast and the Furious 4 ) as Marcellus. Marcellus is Lentulus Batiatus's gruff and cruel gladiator trainer, who picks on Spartacus in particular. She is killed by Spartacus during the revolt.

Michelle Rodriguez

Jada Pinkett Smith (The Women) as Draba. Draba is an Ethiopian being trained at the gladitorial school. Initially, Draba refuses to tell Spartacus her name, being she knows someday she might be matched with her in the ring: each would be obliged to kill the other. Soon afterward, they are matched and ordered to fight to the death: Draba defeats Spartacus but refuses to kill her; she instead attempts to kill the spectators, but she fails and is killed herself.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) as Antoninus. Antoninus is a young Sicilian slave who leaves her master, Crassus, and joins Spartacus. At the conclusion of the movie Spartacus and Antoninus are forced to fight to the death in a gladiatorial match, the survivor to be crucified.

Katee Sackhoff

Who would you cast in all-female production of Spartacus? (Please remember that here, as in Hollywood, logic and reason in casting are not necessary!)

The all female Spartacus is just not complete without Lena and her (lack of) toga aka 300! [Drool...]

Cameo from the bard ?

hehe since the writers/producers of xwp are the same for spartacus, and they never gave a hoot about screwin with history and timelines, perhaps gabrielle can pop in for a few cameos as a traveling adventurer =P.
Natazzz's picture

Wow, someone went all out...

That is quite a nice line up of women, for any movie really.

I'm not a big fan of historical movies, but I'd watch it with this cast.

LOL! Me too!

Good lord, too many Spartacus pretties to choose from!

LOVE this article and your casting for the film - I think my brain just exploded!

What's cool about the actual casting of Spartacus is that Erin Cummings (Bitch Slap) will be cast as the Thracian priestess Sura, Spartacus' wife. At least we get both Lucy and Erin in a project together again - and maybe there will be a bathtub scene between the two ladies! Hey, we can hope! :D

fallon ash's picture

Ooooh!

I LOVE the new and improved cast!! (But really, I hope you were kidding about Jada getting killed. Grrr.) Also, that's an awesome picture of Lucy!

Shame you're not heading this production, Karman, but for Lucy I'll be tuning in anyway!

So many to choose from

This would be an awesome cast to watch on screen together!  And putting Rachel as Caesar is absolute genius.  I could see her being able to bring him to life in a way nobody has before.

I do have to ask though... Where's Zoe Bell?  After watching Angel of Death, I am most definitely a big fan of hers.  With her stuntee skill's, she would make an excellent go-to action girl.

The casting got epic with

The casting got epic with the addition of Rachel Maddow.

I'd replace Jada Pinkett Smith with Gina Torres, though.  And I gotta give it up for my girl, Zoë Bell.  As much as I love Katee Sackhoff, it would kind of be a real kick to see Zoë as Antoninus.

Jodie's picture

 I like Lucy lawless with

I like Lucy lawless with dark hair too but couldn't help drooling when I saw that picture, I think it's the eyes that do it. Hell Lucy would be nice with Black hair,Brown hair, blonde hair or red hair. haha

We could go all out in

We could go all out in the fantasy aspect of this and have Jeri Ryan (aka 7 of 9) transporting back in time from the hollodeck. haha. Now that would be hot.

Love it!

Oh I would LOVE to see this movie made. Lucy as Spartacus - absolutely!!  Renee is a total must have & I could see Victoria Pratt in the cast also.  She played Cyan the Amazon Queen in Xena & was in Cleopatra 2525.  A Gladiator fight between Victoria & Zoe Bell while Lucy & Renee watch.   Oh god, I think I need a cigarette!!

Lucy as Spahtakiss

Oh my God yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees Lucy! :) What a truly thoughtful and creative female cast for the series Karman. Oh my God Lucy! :) I believe it was during Xena in an interview where she said she had eaten oysters in response to if she had ever engaged in lesbian erotics, a reference to leezbianism from the original 1960 film of Spartacus. With such a talented all-female cast of a lesbian version of Spartacus, I can imagine Weaver's butch Batiatus wanting to get it on kinky with Lucy's Spahtakiss in a Roman bath. Oh my God Lucy! :)

Warrior Princess Immortality

Dear Karma,  What made it amazing is that you captured the essence of Everlasting Love Story and Soul Mate Cycle of  Xena & Gabrielle - You made these characters, Alive to minds and imagination of thousands upon thousands of international Xenites. And the truth is you also made them Immortal and Famous over and again - just by pairing them with an awesome selection of strong & naturally beautiful women from different walks of life. Obviously you’ve generated an instant Block Buster.  Like many who posted their comments I too privately praying to The Power-That-Be to make this film, to be  real before I'm too old to drive myself to the movies, LOL!  Thank you for the article and more power to you and yours. Aloha,Tiki Go GIRL POWER!
