Lesbian love on Puerto Rico's "Al Borde del Deseo"

Thanks to AfterEllen.com reader Miss Cyanide, we've learned about a new television series from Puerto Rico called Al Borde del Deseo (On the Border of Desire) that is garnering attention for its portrayal of a lesbian affair.

The women of Al Borde del Deseo

On the website, the show is described as follows (translation courtesy of Wikipedia):

"Al Borde del Deseo is the true story of passionate women who share their experiences of love and disaffection in a modern world, struggling to enjoy an economic and professional position similar to that of men. They are women of different social classes, values and lifestyles opposites. Women who go through life trying to find happiness in a drama-laden comedy, that we are unveiling their aspirations, privacy, hopes, and of course their shenanigans. Women, who learn late in her life, to enjoy an independent life, ready to claim, what belongs to them. It is the story of women in common, not trying to be bigger than life itself but on the contrary, reflect the daily life of women working and struggling to achieve something better than what life has led them."

This show sounds like the amalgamation of several sensationalistic U.S. television shows. I think the actual translation of it's title in English would be, The Secret Lives of Women Who Have Snapped While Writing in Their Red Shoe Diaries.

According to Miss Cyanide, the lesbian subplot in question revolves around a relationship between a middle-aged mother of two, Cecilia (Sully Diaz) and (naturally) a police officer, played by former body-builder and (rumored to be bisexual) actress Nashali Enchautegui.

Sully Diaz and Nashali Enchautegui

On the website for the show (translation by Wikipedia), Cecilia's character is described as "a woman of middle class, married, apparently happy but troubled because her soldier husband, lies in the War of Iraq. But her life is about to be agitated to see a forbidden love in your life, a love differently. A love that will limit the strength of their marriage, and that will endanger her life and that of their daughters when her husband returns from war and discovers that her wife's lover is her own sister."

I'm hoping that what's written above is a typo, and that what they meant to write was "his wife's lover is his own sister."

You know it's bad when your best case scenario is that one of the rare lesbian or bisexual characters on television is screwing around with her sister-in-law, and not her sister.

Besides, I think MTV pretty much has the latter covered.

The show premiered on Oct. 29 and is slated to run through April 2009 (on WAPA in Puerto Rico and WAPA America in the United States).

I watch this, simply

I watch this, simply because of the lesbian storyline.

To be honest, the show is....think of a very low budget soap opera, with lots of corrupted characters, lots of sex, lots of infidelity (it was to be called 'Infieles' or Unfaithful originally) and very flawed scripts.

Some weeks it's more entertaining than others. Some characters are more entertaining than others.

My biggest problem is that it's an unbalanced show. They spend an insane amount of time on some stories, and cero on others.

I watch for the lesbian storyline, and those women so far have only had cameos. They pop in and out, like 'hi! we're here!' and then they're gone. It's so annoying. They also have very little chemistry so far. It lacks heart. Which is a pity, because the Powers That Be in the show are actually a male gay couple.

I give them props for trying, there has never been an actual lesbian or gay storyline in PR Tv before. There might be the ocassional queer character, mostly for laughs or maybe for the angst, but an actual relationship explored on a show, no, not as far as I know.

I'll still watch, though. Maybe it'll get better.

I'm curious to see if there will be some sort of controversy when the women actually kiss and have sex, which I'm sure they will to stir things up, even if the overrall storyline is eh.

OH GOD!

OH GOD! i'm from puerto rico and i didn't knew about this... i don't like neither of both actresses.

Me too.

I'm from Puerto Rico too, i don't like Sully Diaz. I met her twice and she was so arrogant both times. Honestly i don't have any high expectations regarding this storyline.

On the other hand, it's good that there's some lesbian portrayal.

First, I admit to not

First, I admit to not having watched this show... However, for a culture as homophobic as that of Puerto Rico (born and lived there for many years), I agree that the portrayal of lesbian(ish) characters  on  a TV show is some degree of  progress.

Someone from Puerto Rico has to report back...

...and tell us which she is: sister, or sister-in-law!

I hope the best for this storyline

Nashali plays Sully Diaz sister in law, not her sister. Their first kiss is supposed to happen next wednesday. This couple is not given that much screen time, but is still positive that is the first lesbian couple portrayial on puertorican tv. I hope that the storyline is good. Right now is really important to have visibility on TV, the LGBTTQ community in the island just stopped Resolution 99, wich was an intent to make heterosexual marriage a constitutional right and banned same sex marriage and in a different and positive note in the present the Governor of PR just authorized an executive order prohibiting employment discrimination based on sexual orientation including the aquicition of health care for same sex couples and straight couples who are not married. This executive order will apply to both, public and privade service. So as you can see lots of things are happening in the island.

NASHALI ENCHAUTEGUI?!

...seriously? they could have paired Sully up with someone much better than that.

and those pictures are horrible they don't look like such drag queens. lol.

see?? :)

I was watching this last night and had absolutely no idea it had a lesbian storyline in it. I have no high expectations about this either...even though visibility is good...

yeah sully is kinda bitchy

even though I tipped the news, I have to admit I don't like Sully and also it bothers me they don't focus more on the lesbian relationship.... I just thought it was news u know that at last there was some sort of LGBT action especially in Puertorican tv, since it is such an homophobic culture...and Nashali is so hot :)
