Keira royale?

Early reviews of the controversial new book Diana and the Paparazzi by Glenn Harvey and Mark Saunders (to be published this September) sparked a bidding frenzy for the film rights at the Cannes Film Festival this year. The early frontrunner for the role of Princess Diana (if it gets made)? Keira Knightley of Pirates of the Caribbean fame.

Producer Quentin Reynolds (Evil Aliens) is bidding for the rights and predicts that the movie adaptation will be ten times the hit that was The Queen. Reynolds said, "Already the word in Hollywood is 'get Knightley'. It's a story that has everything: pathos, tragedy, comedy, adventure...and Princess Diana."

No wonder everyone hates Hollywood folk.

In terms of casting news, you can file this one under "D" for "Duh." From the moment I first saw Knightley in Bend It Like Beckham, I thought she was a ringer for the late Princess.

Can't picture it? Check out the photos below. The first is of Knightley in the god-awful guilty pleasure Domino ("My name is Domino. I am a bownty huntah." ). Below that is a photo of Diana, enhanced by our own bad machine to allow for a true apples to apples comparison.

Exactly.

    Ick

I think I'm one of three people who hated 'The Queen', that useless bit of apologist crap-o-trific spin. I hold out little hope that a biopic on Diana would be less than sucky. I'm told that not being an anglophile effects my appreciation for all things the royals. Yeah, probably.

    "D" for "Duh"

Yeah, it's pretty normal everyone want Keira in this one.. I mean the resemblances are so obvious... She's the actress "of the moment" lol.. And she even said she wanted to get away from all this Hollywood nonsense and quit the business.. now she's the hunted bounty..!!

Nice pic of Diana there.. almost believable!

Oh and.. "My name is Domino. I am a bownty huntah" --> hahah!!!! genius!

    Yikes

I hope Keira does not do this film.  If someone has to play the role I hope they find an unknown.

    breathe breathe

Keira's alright. But as Diana? Just don't see it. She doesn't have the gravitas. Oh, or the breasts.

I gather you're not so crazy about Keira Knightly?

    I love Kiera

In fact, I was pissed off for a good three hours after I got home from Pirates... no more Kiera... I was in withdrawl.

    Keira's gorgeous AND

Keira's gorgeous AND talented...so she can do whatever she wants to do! haha. But no really, I can see the resemblence, but I guess having an unknown play Princess Diana would be cool also.

    Keira definitely has a a

Keira definitely has a a very similar voice to Diana, I've noticed that before. Physically I don't see it all that much, if Keira didn't often sport short, blonde hair I doubt we'd see such huge similarities.

However, I don't freaking want to see a Princess Diana movie made. Who the hell cares? Well, a lot of people, but it's stupid. The entire Diana affair makes me so angry. I may have only been like 12 when it happened, but I remember how no one gave a crap about her before she died. She was really strongly disliked by most people, then she died tragically and people made her a martyr. It's totally ridiculous.

    Angry? Really?

Diana was "really strongly disliked by most people"?? Are you sure you're talking about the right Diana? The Diana I "knew" was loved the world over. And people most certainly cared about her prior to her death, as she was still seen on magazine covers around the world, and in fact, the paparazzi are widely considered to be responsible for the accident that caused her death. If nobody cared, would the paparazzi be chasing her around the world? I think not.

Diana was and is, a part of history. Frankly, I'm amazed it has taken this long for a movie to be made about her life.

    Seems Like

You're not much older than twelve now, Tam. I don't mean to offend, but even I, who has a strong dislike for all things royal, have a great deal of respect for that woman and I am still convinced there is a great deal we do not and will never know about her death.

Diana might not have been everyone's cup of tea, or scone, but she was respected, she did a lot of work for a lot of charities and unlike people like Angelina Jolie, she did not do it for the fame or glory, she did it because she was a kind, generous soul, the likes of which we'll never see again.

It comes down to a generational thing. The generation of my mother, for example, was the most devestated when Diana died. My generation understood something had happened, although we weren't sure what it was, or what impact it had on our parents. The generation after me has no clue. Seriously. Not a personal attack here, just a general statement about the youth of today. What's more important to you, right now? Your PS3 or Xbox or Mobile Phone, or the history of those before you? Honestly, tell me. I won't condem. To me, it's history. Mobile Phone be damned.

    Diana

Yes, darn it!   Those young people with their fancy gadgets and rock and roll music!  Why, in my day, we had to walk a hundred miles in the snow every day just to get to school...

Anyhoo, Diana was the most famous woman in the world. Not everyone was a fan but everyone sure was interested in whatever she did, from changing her hairstyle to visiting AIDS patients.  I remember sitting up at all hours to watch The Wedding and I was no fan of the Royal Family (and still aren't).  Diana was a revolutionary, in a sense.  She breathed some new life into a very old and tired institution. She was mobbed like a film star wherever she went. I'm sad that she's no longer with us but she changed the monarchy forever (in a good way) and there will never be anyone like her again.

    Diana

I always remember meeting Diana when she came on one of her many visits to Cardiff. I was 8 years old at the time, I gave her some flowers, and I thought that she was the most beautiful lady I'd ever seen in my life, well she was a real-life Princess! It really was a dream come true to meet her, I was in awe of her. So when Diana died I was 13 (I'm a year younger than William) and I always remember my mum coming up to my bedroom to wake me up to tell me what had happened.  Anyway my mum, my sisters and I all sat watching the news ALL day in just floods of tears - all of us! I couldn't believe she'd gone. We then sat and cried for the funeral, it was an incredibly moving day. She might not have been that popular where you live Tam, and I respect that, but she was LOVED AND ADORED in Wales - well she was OUR Princess. It might seem silly but it felt as if we'd lost a dear friend, someone we loved and looked up to. She was a beautiful, kind, caring, and selfless lady with a life ahead of her. And what's more tragic is that she was a young mother to two young boys. I'm indifferent to the royals as a whole, but I loved Diana. I know that we in Wales don't want another Princess of Wales for a while - that's one of the reasons why Camilla is now called the Duchess of Cornwall, and not the Princess of Wales - people loved Diana too much and the Royals know it would never pass here.  Oh yeah the film. I don't care about the film.

    I'm jealous..

that you got to meet Princess Diana. *hmph* I remember watching TV really late at night when the news flashed across the screen...I was dumbfounded...was it really true. I cried during the broadcasted funeral...she truly was a great and compassionate person. Definitely on my list of people who I'd like to meet, past or present.
