Dara & Karman's Hit List: "The Halloween Special" (Episode 39)

This week, Dara and I celebrate the holiest of gay holidays, Halloween. We discuss the best way to make cheap and easy iconic lesbian costumes (Cagney and Lacey! Spashley!) and share some of our fondest memories of Halloweens past.

Dara made a splash as a hot cop last year, and my favorite costume to date was Edina from Absolutely Fabulous. How will you be dressing up this Halloween?

Lesbians and their hats!

Karman, that hat was AWSOME! Funny as ever guys, I sometimes wish Halloween was more of a thing over here in the UK, I think I would go as dark Willow, after Tara got shot and she tried to make the world go kaboom, that would be fun :) But instead I will be celebrating it in style watching some West Wing in my pj's haha

Guising in Scotland

Scotland's quite into Halloween but instead of trick or treating we have guising. This would be good for Karman because instead of demanding sweets you have to perform for them i.e sing a song, tell a joke, recite a poem. I think this makes it more fun and it's quite sad that a lot of Scottish kids don't know about guising anymore only trick or treating.

"no, the night before halloween."

"I'm pretty sure we called it the night before halloween..."

I literally laughed out loud when I heard that. My roommates probably think I'm crazy.

Keep it up, ladies :) Hope you have a wonderful Halloween!!

ps. Karman, I was the same way - growing up I loved dressing up and passing out candy but I hated ringing doorbells and actually trick-or-treating. It gave me so much anxiety.  Luckily, my brother was soon old enough to trick-or-treat and he only liked about 1/10 of the candy he'd get, so I got all the profits with none of the work. score!

I'm going as Dara for Halloween

I think i'm going to be Dara for halloween, though i look more like Karman.

i'll just carry around some drum sticks, and dress like Dara. None of my friends will know what my costume is.

And if you wanna be Shane... its too late.

Its too late for any of them really.

Scaring kids

"Scaring kids is probably one of the most fun things about halloween."
"It's one of the most fun things about living!"

So true... so, so true.

Anyway, unfortunately we're not really into halloween yet in the Netherlands. It's all new here and no one will give me candy yet. Thankfully St. Nick is coming on the 5th of december so I can expect lots of candy in the weeks before then :)

Btw I love the idea of the cop costume, definitely doing that if I ever get the opportunity to dress up for a halloween party. It doesn't really have the same effect if you sit at home by yourself.

The Chin-Strap

I couldn't take my eyes off it for the entire episode, at first it revolted me but now I don't know what to think! On second inspection, it's rad.

Rad chin-strap, Karman!

chin-strap = revolting

Trust your first instinct. The chin-strap truly is revolting. In fact, my own mother just called me to ask me not to wear a hat on the show again. She said, "I just watched your show, and that hat ... the strap was choking me." I think she meant it both literally and figuratively.

The next time I'm offered the choice between a top hat and the chapeau of an elf, I'm taking the top hat.

Hehe

Let's hope it's not a choice you'll have to make too often. If you would have to choose between a chapeau of an elf and a top hat on a daily basis one could argue that you have a very very strange life...

Carnaval!

In Holland we have something way better than halloween: Carnaval. It's a whole week of dressing up and drinking beer the whole day. It's like a 5 day and night halloween. My favourite costumes are: pippi longstocking, xena (just to carry a sword and fight with everyone dressed as a pirate and musketeer). Halloween is not really celebrated but in february there are no limits! :D

Costume

I'm going as Kane from Alien, complete with a Chestburster alien paper mache creation of wonder!

Totally worth the days it took to make!!

Halloween

"and I get to make out with Lauren Lee Smith." I think that right there is reason enough. Dara, I think you'd make an epic Dana.

Karman, I love the hat. And congrats on the new job!  =]

I hope you all have a great Halloween!

Costume suggestion.

It works best if you've got a group of 3. 2 can go as mauled drunk hicks, 1 can dress up as a Tiger.  (The two guys that got mauled by the Tiger at the Calgary zoo) (Okay, maybe it is just funnier in my mind).

Alternatively, scary costume: Kate Goesslin.
